  • The South/Western Gothic: White Capitalist Zombies in Katherine Anne
           Porter's Noon Wine

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Set from 1896 to 1905 on a South Texas homestead and mostly centering white characters, Katherine Anne Porter's 1939 short novel Noon Wine chronicles the arrival of a man named Olaf Helton, whose hard labor transforms a failing dairy farm owned by the Thompson family into a thriving enterprise. Two Black workers previously held the position Helton fills; their mysterious and violent disappearances cast a pall over the events that follow. By characterizing Helton as a mindless adherent to his work and a signifier of how racism underpins Western power structures, Porter depicts the intersection of race and capitalism on an isolated Texas farm as a microcosm of larger workings of the US empire. Focusing on Helton's ... Read More

  • The Unfinishedness & Untimeliness of A Raisin in the Sun

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Various versions of Lorraine Hansberry's A Raisin in the Sun have been haunted by the label "definitive." In 2014, Time dubbed Raisin "the definitive depiction of the black experience in mid-century America" (Zoglin). Robert Nemiroff, Hansberry's husband and literary executor, describes the American Playhouse version, first performed in 1984 and released on TV and home video in 1988, as the play's "definitive realization" (Nemiroff 12). A review of the 2014 Broadway rendition claimed, "Even if you think you have seen A Raisin in the Sun before, this is the definitive production for our time" (Gluck). As recently as 2021, a Bloomsbury reprint of the play touted "a new, updated edition" that "includes the full ... Read More

  • The Other James: James Joyce, Henry James, and Seamus Deane's Reading in
           the Dark

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Seamus Deane's novel Reading in the Dark, short-listed for the Booker Prize upon its publication in 1996, has attracted significant critical attention during the quarter century since its acclaimed debut, but this attention has come almost entirely from within the Irish Studies field that Deane dominated for decades as a scholar and critic. Most writers who have analyzed the novel read it in tandem with Deane's influential critical work. But interpretations of Reading in the Dark as cultural critique by other means do not account adequately for its formal properties. I contend that the form Deane chose for his novel, which emphasizes ambiguity, expresses his uncertainty regarding his autobiographical subject. In ... Read More

  • Stevie as Revolutionary in Joseph Conrad's The Secret Agent

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Joseph Wiesenfarth contends that Stevie is "the point of focus of all the rest" (513) in Joseph Conrad's 1907 novel The Secret Agent. This seems an overstatement, but Stevie does lie at the center of the Greenwich Meridian Observatory explosion in the novel. It is Stevie, not Verloc or any of Verloc's anarchist colleagues, who carries the Professor's bomb and sets off the explosion. In the critical discourse concerning the Greenwich bombing, critics pay little attention to the explosion in relation to Stevie himself. Most have either read this explosion as an attack on social order—including time itself—or seen it as the beginning of a domestic tragedy, because Winnie, Verloc, and Stevie die. In this reading ... • Out of the Closet and Into the Home: Gertrude Stein, Alice B. Toklas, and
the Affordances of the Domestic Interior

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: In the spring of 1923, Gertrude Stein published "Idem the Same: A Valentine to Sherwood Anderson" in the Little Review. The nine-section poem begins and ends in what book reviewers and columnists had, by that point, long mockingly called "Steinese." The poem's sixth section, "bundles for them. a history of giving bundles," begins in this same register, bucking sense for sound patterns, which are quite regular and satisfying when Stein reads them aloud.1 Then, suddenly, in the middle of the section, Stein makes perfect sense:If you hear her snoreIt is not before you love herYou love her so that to be her beau is very lovelyShe is sweetly there and her curly hair is very          lovelyShe is sweetly here and I ...
