Abstract: In Nineteenth-Century American Women’s Serial Novels, Dale Bauer recuperates critically neglected female authors and celebrates, rather than castigates, the repetitions evident in their work as a collective body; their ‘few plots’ (p. 1) become expansive and transformative narratives, intersecting gender, society, and nation. As Bauer posits, ‘reading as a whole body allows us to see the systematic nature of […] repeated elements of US culture’; these ‘plots and characters may be combined in different ways, but their accretion yields a surpassing vision: the need to establish a code of conduct that will help to reorder personal and family relations in a new vision of Americanised pain and recovery’ (p. 2). Bauer’s illustrated volume recovers a wealth of texts, from magazines and story newspapers to forgotten novels (such as Ann Stephens’s Beadle series [1860]); similarly, her study of the well-known E.D.E.N. Southworth provides a frame through which critically neglected figures are given voice. Chapter 1 focuses on Southworth’s interrelation of female misery and psychological malady, examining Fair Play [1868] in terms of its portrayal of both moral insanity and gender equality. Chapter 2 then explores Ann Stephens’s presentation of female violence, imprisonment, hospitalization, and death, overviewing these issues in her novels as a collective body before moving on to chapter 3, in which Stephens’s and Southworth’s caged women are examined together. Chapter 4 then discusses Mary Jane Holmes’s juxtaposition of ‘family pride’ and ‘work ethic’ across her novels and short stories, before detailing Laura Jean Libbey’s imaging of women, on the boundary between Victorian and modern, in chapter 5. Bauer considers how this transitional modernism is figured through depictions of brain surgery in Libbey’s work, tracing the ways in which she foregrounds protomodern novelists such as Gertrude Atherton and Fannie Hurst. Chapter 6 subsequently investigates Southworth’s, Stephens’s, and Libbey’s ambiguity about racial intimacy, shaped by the growing tensions of interracial US culture. A conclusion then posits future directions for serial studies through reference to Alex McVeigh Miller and Pauline Hopkins. As Bauer maintains, ‘reading serial fiction collectively—over the course of a single novelist’s career and across multiple novelists’ oeuvres—makes the cultural significance of serial novels intelligible’ (p. 10). In tracing the repetitions evident within serials, Bauer presents such writing not as restrictive but revisionary, their evolving tales charting evolving American nationhood and womanhood.

Abstract: AbstractThis chapter has four sections: 1. Periodicals; 2. Editions and Catalogues; 3. Bibliography, Associated Books and Articles, Histories, and Companions; 4. Some Shakespeare and Miscellaneous, including Reference Materials. These sections are not inviolable. With exceptions, this review of the year’s work published in 2020 in the areas of bibliography, textual criticism, and reference material is mostly alphabetically arranged. Within the alphabetical arrangement by author there are some exceptions where publications are grouped under the respective authors rather than on the editors of, for instance, the correspondence. There is also included in this chapter, as in previous years, work that has been missed in some of the other chapters in this volume. Readers should be aware that coverage is largely limited to those items that have been received by the contributor in a year dominated by the virus! Thanks are due to James E. May, who contributed the section on the Eighteenth-Century Intelligencer, Brent E. Kinser, Andrew McAinsh of the Edinburgh Bibliographical Society, Professor Patrick Scott, Liam Sims of the Cambridge Bibliographical Society, Professors Tianhu Ho and Ken Womack, and Jan Webster for their assistance.
