  • African strangers, spaces of belonging and the “democracy to come” in
           Helon Habila’s Travellers

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

      Authors: María J. López
Abstract: The Journal of Commonwealth Literature, Ahead of Print.
This article analyses Helon Habila’s Travellers (2019), focusing on its depiction of African migrants in Europe as strangers, as defined by Sara Ahmed in Strange Encounters (2000): those who, in spite of their proximity, are recognized as not belonging or out of place. Following Ahmed, this essay deals with the relation between space and migrant experience in Habila’s novel, in which the configuration of cities such as Berlin and London and of Europe as a whole is presented as characterized by the enforcement of boundaries and spaces of belonging (Ahmed, 2000), so that the African stranger emerges as an undesirable, threatening, foreign element to be feared and expelled. On the other hand, such a logic of defensiveness, homogeneity, and exclusion is partly challenged and undermined in Travellers by acts of resistance carried out by both African and European characters and by acts of domestic hospitality. These acts suggest the disruption of frontiers and borders, and their corresponding sealed and homogeneous spaces (Ahmed, 2000), together with the necessity of exercising hospitality at a collective and political level. As opposed to the configuration of Europe as Fortress Europe, in which identity and community are defined in terms of affiliation to roots, homeland, or race, in Travellers we find thus an appeal to what Jacques Derrida has called the “democracy to come”, a political, always deferred space of unconditional hospitality that opens up to the foreigner and the stranger.

  • “A bit of the other”: Black edibility and white consumption in Andrea
           Levy’s Small Island

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

      Authors: Corrine Collins
Abstract: The Journal of Commonwealth Literature, Ahead of Print.
This article examines depictions of interracial violence in Andrea Levy’s Small Island to argue that the novel challenges the ways that interraciality is mobilized as a symbol of progress. By examining tropes of black edibility and white consumption, this article situates the duality of attraction and repulsion white characters feel for black characters within libidinal economies of racialized desire and power. Through an analysis of main protagonist Queenie’s anti-blackness towards her black friends, lovers, and child, this article argues that love and affection themselves are implicated within racialized economies of power and an anti-black desirability politics that seeks to possess and destroy black people.

  • This generation’s Wild Swans' Counter-stereotyping self-creation in
Xiaolu Guo’s Once Upon a Time in the East: A Story of Growing Up

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

      Authors: Yifan JIN
Abstract: The Journal of Commonwealth Literature, Ahead of Print.
This article reads Xiaolu Guo’s Once Upon a Time in the East: A Story of Growing Up (2017) as a counter-stereotyping memoir set against Jung Chang’s Wild Swans: Three Daughters of China (1991) through the authors’ divergent narrative stances in self-creation. Although both memoirs belong to the literary genre of autobiography and narrate lives in the past, Guo, by comparing herself to the heroic Monkey King, exhibits a distinct perspective that characterizes her immigrant experience as a nomad’s feminist journey into art. Guo’s self-creation as a nomadic artist deterritorializes the affiliation of diasporic Chinese writing with misery literature, labelled “ethnic”, and reveals the complexity of contemporary Chinese culture. Thus, this counter-stereotyping memoir represents how an Anglophone Chinese writer of the post-Chang generation tends to negotiate her ethnic status and demonstrates the multiplicity of being Chinese.

  • Agential realism and trans-corporeality in contemporary South Asian
           literature

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

      Authors: Megan E. Fourqurean
Abstract: The Journal of Commonwealth Literature, Ahead of Print.
South Asian literature has a history of engaging with ecocriticism and environmentalism from a postcolonial, locally specific perspective. New materialism shares this ecocritical commitment through its posthumanist conceptions of embodiment and material entanglement between human and nonhuman material agencies. Despite their common interest in alternative possibilities for human and nonhuman engagement, new materialism and South Asian literature have rarely come into meaningful contact with each other. My article seeks to bring both fields together by examining Kiran Desai's novel Hullabaloo in the Guava Orchard from a new materialist perspective, in which human and nonhuman characters interact with each other in imagining posthumanist possibilities of being in the world. I mobilise Karen Barad's agential realist theory and Stacy Alaimo's concept of trans-corporeality to argue that Desai's light-hearted comic satire raises important questions about environmental and human exploitation. Examinations of the local, national, global, and historical aspects of India's material reality reveal the agential realist nature of human and nonhuman interactions within the novel's rural postcolonial context. This reading expands the scope of new materialism into South Asian literature and furthers the possibility of using new materialist theory to engage with ecocriticism from a postcolonial perspective.

  • Cinematic empire and nostalgia in Viceroy’s House and Victoria and
           Abdul

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

      Authors: Tehmina Pirzada, Saba Pirzadeh
Abstract: The Journal of Commonwealth Literature, Ahead of Print.
The commercial viability of Gurinder Chadha’s Viceroy’s House (2017) and Stephen Frears’ Victoria and Abdul (2017) can be attributed to their effective use of heritage film elements to offer romanticized versions of British rule. Decoding the teleological intent behind these romanticized versions, this article contends that the chosen films promote nostalgia in response to the postimperial melancholia that Britain is experiencing in the contemporary period. Exploring the cinematic recreation of nostalgia, this article analyses the spatial, material, and racial aspects of Victoria and Abdul and Viceroy’s House. The spatial analysis highlights the cinematography used to depict heritage space to commemorate British tradition, the material examination focuses on colonial gifts of economic mobility and political emancipation bestowed on the colonized, and the racial analysis focuses on Muslim stereotyping through exoticism and animalization to reinforce British pride in civilizing the “inferior race”. An explication of these cinematic and narrative elements highlights the films’ invocation of nostalgia for an idealized past through a return to a closed epoch of empire that uncritically and dangerously reproduces ideologies of British cultural and racial superiority. Furthermore, this invocation of nostalgia works to glorify British historical origins and strengthen national cohesion in order to allay collective anxieties about the abject loss of the empire’s global recognition in the wake of Brexit.
