           Study of Al-Hasaka District, Syria

    • Authors: Alaa Hammo, Ali Abdul-Aziz, Shabab Nasser
Abstract: Sheep rearing occupies an important role associated with animal production in Al-Hasaka governorate, due to the economic advantages it enjoys. Further, study of the production function is useful in measuring the production process and estimating the economic relations. These are important in determining the extent of production efficiency of the factors achievable that affects the sheep production. Accordingly, the research aimed mainly at measuring productive efficiency. The sample size was 313 rearers, who were chosen adopting a simple random sample method. The results identified the most influencing factors on the estimated production function. The sheep rearer experience and labor wage accounted for about 34% and 17%, respectively. Further, the use of production factors falls in the second stage of the production process, and the total flexibility reached was 1.479, and that the distribution efficiency of all factors of production was greater than one. The study recommends more efforts to increase investment in using factors of production to increase production to an level.

  • Farmers’ Adaptation Strategies to Rainfall Variability
           in Oljoro-Orok Ward, Kenya

    • Authors: Amon Mwangi Karanja
Abstract: The paper analyzed farmers’ adaptation strategies to rainfall variability in Oljoro-orok Ward in Nyandarua County, Kenya. The major crop grown in Oljoro-orok Ward is Irish potatoes. Stratified proportionate random sampling was used to select 192 respondents from different locations in the Ward. Data was analyzed using descriptive statistics where multiple responses on the adaptation measures were accommodated in the final analyses. It was found that crop diversification was the most common adaptation measure practiced in the ward (38%) followed by timely planting (30%), off season approach (24%) and irrigation (8%). Farmers practiced crop diversification where they planted other crops such as animal feeds and vegetables such as onions and carrots that mature faster in times of unfavorable rainfall. The Ministry of agriculture and County government of Nyandarua should create more avenues to reach out to all farmers and educate them on the importance of adopting scientific practices to increase Irish potato production in light of rainfall variability in Oljoro-orok ward. Kenya Agriculture and Livestock Research Organization should make hybrid potato seeds accessible and affordable to all farmers in Oljoro-orok Ward. The Kenya Meteorological Department should enhance relay of seasonal weather forecast to reach more farmers within a short period at the beginning of every season to allow timely planting.

  • Digital Image Processing Approach for Determination of Leaf Area of Field
           Crops

    • Authors: Priyabrata Santra, Shekh Mukthar Mansuri, Bajrang Lal Dhaka, Hans Raj Mahla
Abstract: A digital image processing method has been developed to estimate the leaf area of clusterbean using commonly available printer-cum-scanner in a desktop computer. In this method, leaves were collected from the field and scanned in the laboratory over a transparent sheet placed on the top glass cover of the scanner bed. Further, the scanned image was processed through a programing code to compute the leaf area. A comparison of digital method with grid method revealed that the leaf area was slightly lower in grid method than in digital method because in the digital method minute details of leaf area could be accommodated whereas in grid method it was not. The digital method could be more suitable for crops with small leaves where the grid method is tedious. In future, smart phone based android application may be developed to capture the photographs of the leaves in the field and analysed subsequently to obtain the area. The quick assessment of leaf area using digital method may aid in timely management of water and nutrients in the field.

  • Common Grazing Resources of Hot Arid Zone of Rajasthan, India: Problems
           and Prospects

    • Authors: A K Misra, R N Kumawat
Abstract: The agriculture in the hot arid zone of Rajasthan, India is mainly subsistence farming and pasturelands dominate among different land use systems. These lands provide main support to the huge livestock population of the region. About 60% of the total area of Rajasthan is arid where livestock rearing plays pivotal role in the economy and livelihood of the people. In arid region, animal husbandry sector provides round the year employment with more than 50% of total house hold income as against national average of 22.5%. Common Pool Resources (CPRs) or “commons” are an important component of the agricultural production systems. The CPRs includes community pastures, community forests, government wastelands, common dumping and threshing grounds, river beds, watershed drainages, village ponds and rivers etc. In an estimate common pool comes to around 34.75% of the total geographical area of western Rajasthan. About half of this area is cultivable waste lands, 21% fallow lands (other than current fallow), 14% uncultivable waste lands, 11% permanent pastures and 7% is village forests. Common lands in arid Rajasthan were estimated to contribute 27.90% of dry fodder and 76.30% of green fodder requirement of the livestock in 1960 that decreased to 15.44% and 40.5%, respectively during 2012-13. Traditionally, a close link exists between crop, livestock and common grazing resources in the arid Rajasthan. This complex inter-relationship between CPRs, livestock and crops in arid land farming systems has contributed to the sustainability of dry land agriculture for generations. As the population of both animals and humans rises, there is a proportional increase in competition for food to feed the people that brings agriculture and livestock production into direct conflict. In the present article an attempt has been made to describe the extent and condition of common grazing lands, and examine the problems and prospects of these areas in changing agricultural scenario in hot arid zone of Rajasthan, India.

  • Capturing the Price Volatility of Onion and Potato in Selected Markets of
           Gujarat

    • Authors: Hemant Sharma, S S Kalankar, D P Raykundilya, M Makwana
Abstract: The study investigates four selected markets of onion and potato for capturing the price volatility. The monthly wholesale price data were used for study of price behavior. The results indicated that a negative trend in arrival was observed in Ahmedabad and Vadodara market and price trends was positive in both the commodities. In seasonal indices, fluctuation in the monthly indices of onion and potato arrivals was more than the monthly indices of their prices in selected markets during the study period. Potato crop observed relatively more stability as compared to onion in the selected markets. The results confirmed that there was high volatility in prices of onion in these selected markets as compared to potato. Policies need to be developed to control the volatile nature of onion prices, which is directly affecting people in the low income group.

  • The Effect of Streptomyces sp. SF5 and Aqueous Extract of Salsola
vermiculata on the Growth of Triticum durum L. under Salinity

    • Authors: Hanane Ameur
Abstract: The present study analyzed the effect of NaCl, Salsola vermiculata (halophyte) and Streptomyces sp. SF5 on the growth of MBB variety of durum wheat Triticum durum L. The experiment consisted of twelve treatment combinations carried out in three replications. NaCl solutions (0, 100 and 200 mM) were added to sterile soil with or without aqueous extract of S. vermiculata and Streptomyces sp. alone or in combination. The results showed that this variety was moderately halotolerant. Germination rates at 0, 100 and 200 mM NaCl were 100%, 80% and 53.2% respectively. Combination of S. vermiculata and Streptomyces sp. affected germination rates significantly at different levels of NaCl (46.66%, 40% and 26.6%). Sole application of the halophyte or Streptomyces sp. restored germination to 86.6%, and 93.2% (in 200 mM NaCl) and improved growth of the wheat. Furthermore, the length and the dry weight of roots and stems, chlorophyll a, b and carotenoids contents were also improved significantly. In the presence of 100 and 200 mM NaCl, proline reached levels of 45.3 and 20.31 μg g-1 of fresh material respectively. They were however, reduced in the presence of S. vermiculata and/or Streptomyces sp. SF5.The aqueous extract of S. vermiculata and application of Streptomyces sp. SF5 to a saline soil partially alleviates its adverse effects and improves growth and performance of wheat seedlings.
