  • Prospection and identification of traditional-heritage Peruvian grapevine
           cultivars (Vitis vinifera L.) from Ica and Cañete valleys

      Abstract: Interest in ancient and autochthonous cultivars has increased in recent years since they are directly related to the historical and cultural values of a region. Ica and Cañete valleys (Peru) have a long history of grapevine cultivation and the aim of this study was to identify phenotypes corresponding to the most used varieties for the local production of Pisco and wine. The 29 samples were collected in 17 vineyards in the Ica and Cañete valleys, and were analyzed using 20 molecular markers and 5 morphological descriptors according to the OIV. Results showed that the 29 collected samples corresponded to 11 genotypes: seven traditional cultivars and four unknown genotypes not registered previously. The known cultivars were 'Muscat of Alexandria', 'Listán Prieto', 'Quebranta', 'Moscatel Rosado', 'Pedro Giménez', 'Muscat Hamburg' and 'Palomino Fino'. The four not registered genotypes are locally known as 'Mollar de Ica', 'Moscatel Rosada de Cañete', 'Prieta Mollar' and 'Torontel'. All of them correspond to offspring of traditional-heritage Peruvian cultivars. We also found a phenotypic variation of 'Listán Prieto' with muscat flavor and identified phenotypic berry color variations in 'Quebranta'. This study increases the knowledge of traditional Peruvian grape varieties and highlight the genetic variability preserved in the traditional vineyards of local producers.

  • Influence of vineyard inter-row management on vegetative and bunch
           sanitary status, and grape yield and quality of two Sauvignon Blanc clones
           in Friuli Venezia Giulia (north-eastern Italy)

      Abstract: The vineyard inter-row management affects grapevine vegetative and bunch health status, as well as yield and grape quality parameters. Several studies assessed that cover-cropped inter-row in place of soil tillage often reduced plant vigour and yield but positively contributed to vineyard ecosystem services and, to a lower extent, to grape quality. In 2013 and 2014, two inter-row management strategies, i.e. soil tillage and mowing of spontaneous cover crops, were compared in an organic vineyard in north-eastern Italy and cultivated with 'Sauvignon Blanc' (Vitis vinifera L.), clones R3 and 297. In particular, the effects of tillage and mowing treatments on grapevine vegetative and bunch health status, yield and grape quality were evaluated. The vegetative parameters were lower in the mowing treatment than in the tillage one and in clone R3 compared to 297. The incidence of Botrytis cinerea was higher in the tillage treatment than in the mowing one and in clone 297 compared to R3. A significant reduction of the yield and bunch weight was ascertained in the mowing treatment, and these parameters were higher for clone 297 compared to clone R3. Titratable acidity was significantly higher in the tillage treatment than in the mowing one and in clone 297 compared to R3. Moreover, hue of berry skin was qualitatively better in the tillage treatment than in the mowing one. In the pedo-climatic conditions of Friuli Venezia Giulia (north-eastern Italy), the management of the vineyard inter-row with spontaneous cover crops proved to be effective to manage grapevine vigour, reducing yield and improving quality of the grapes during maturation.

  • Outline analysis of the grapevine (Vitis vinifera L.) berry shape by
           elliptic Fourier descriptors

      Abstract: Grapevine berry morphology is one of the most important features in table grape production. In this study, berry samples of 46 grapevine accessions were investigated for 3 consecutive years with elliptic Fourier descriptors (EFD) to evaluate shape diversity. Ten reference shapes obtained from the OIV descriptor list were involved and principal component (PC) scores summarizing the EFD's were statistically evaluated with Two way ANOVA and discriminant analysis. The cummulative contribution of the five principal components was 96.83 %. Two way ANOVA revealed that berry shape had high variability within the accessions and years. Based on the linear discriminant analysis, reference shapes were compared to those of the accessions and graphic reconstruction was carried out. OIV references were considered as unknown samples and grouped into the accession classes. Overall correct classification of the accessions into their group was 13.88 %. Our results showed that EFD together with reference shapes are a powerful method to discribe berry shape and possibly give the future basis of uvometric evaluation of grapevine cultivars.

  • The effect of homozygosity of locus Rpv12 on downy mildew resistance of
           grapevine leaves

      Abstract: Inoculation trials with different pathogenic fungi and oomycetes have not yet shown any significant effect of homozygosity in resistance loci on the level of resistance. However, here a considerable reduction in mycelial growth of the oomycete P. viticola was found in association with the homozygous state of the Rpv12 locus. This effect was detected by aniline blue staining of the mycelium after experimental inoculation of leaf tissue and quantified by image analysis. Genotypes homozygous for the Rpv12-locus as classified by SSR marker data, inhibited mycelial growth considerably more in comparison to genotypes carrying the locus Rpv12 in heterozygous state.

  • Arthropods as vectors of esca-related pathogens: Transmission efficiency
           of ants and earwigs and the potential of earwig feces as inoculum source
           in vineyards

      Abstract: The spread of Grapevine trunk diseases (GTDs) such as esca concerns wine growers worldwide. Besides rain-splash and air currents, arthropods may play an additional role in the dissemination of esca-related pathogens such as Phaeomoniella chlamydospora (Pch) and Phaeoacremonium minimum (Pmm). The present study confirms that black garden ants (Lasius niger L., Formicidae: Formicinae) and European earwigs (Forficula auricularia L., Dermaptera: Forficulidae) can, under artificial conditions, efficiently transmit spores of Pch and Pmm to healthy grapevine cuttings, causing new infections.
      The potential of earwig feces as inoculum source in vineyards is additionally discussed. Spores of Pch and Pmm retained germination ability after earwig gut passage, and infectious feces successfully infected wounded grapevine cuttings under artificial conditions. However, molecular detection frequencies of esca-related pathogens in earwig feces collected from the field were very low. With this, the risk of earwig feces as inoculum source for esca-related pathogens is probably only marginal.
      However, arthropods carrying esca-related spores on their exoskeletons, such as ants and earwigs, might contribute to the overall spread of esca in vineyards.
      The invasion of GTDs during the phase of pruning wound susceptibility, either by arthropod vectors or by airborne spores, can efficiently be prevented by adequate pruning wound protection.

  • Effect of manure application timing on roots, canopy and must quality in
           Vitis vinifera 'Merlot': a case study in Italy, North-East

      Abstract: The maintenance and improvement of soil fertility are among the most important management practices in viticulture. The system efficiency fertilization (SEF) which is a new concept based on a maximum utilization of organic fertilizers (i.e., manure) has become very important, especially within the organic viticulture sector, since other fertilizers are not allowed. The aim of this study was to determine the effect of different manure application timing on the root, shoot, and the grapevine yield, accumulation, and quality of biochemical compounds in the grape must since the timing effect was not previously investigated. The study was carried out on 'Merlot' variety organically cultivated, whose production aims at obtaining high-quality red wines. Three treatments were applied: NT (Non-Treated), T1 (Treated1- manure applied in late October) and T2 (Treated2 - manure applied in late February). After two study-years, the undertaken research has shown positive influences of soil manure application on the canopy features (T1), yield, and yield components (T2), along with a major accumulation of the primary metabolites (T2) (soluble solid, carbohydrates, chlorophyll). Yet, the secondary metabolites (polyphenols and anthocyanins) were promoted in the grape must at harvest time, especially when the manure was applied in late October (T2). Considering the benefits of manure application in the T2, after two study years, this timing is recommended in order to improve 'Merlot' grapes for high-quality red wine production.
