  • Inventory of Invasive Alien Plant Species (IAPs) in Bali Botanic Garden
           and the Adjacent Areas

    • Authors: Farid Kuswantoro, Sutomo Sutomo, Wawan Sujarwo
      Pages: 119 - 130
Abstract: Similar to other botanic gardens, Bali Botanic Garden (BBG) is also prone to the spread of Invasive Alien Plant (IAP) species. Unfortunately, research about IAP species in BBG is still very limited. Thus, the study aims to update the list of IAP species in BBG and its adjacent areas as well as to provide a garden manager with data of the most important IAP species. This study was conducted by using sampling plots that were purposively established in three areas of BBG, namely the Ekor Burung (EB), VIP, and Kepala Burung (KB). Data analysis was performed to calculate the Relative Frequency (RF), Important Value Index (IVI), Clustering analysis, and NMDS ordination. The study was able to document 18 IAP species. Ageratina riparia and Bidens pilosa have the highest RF in EB, while the former also has the highest RF in VIP and KB. Similarly, the highest IVI was acquired by A. riparia in VIP and KB, as well as by Sida rhombifolia in EB. Cluster analysis revealed two subsets. NMDS ordination suggested that VIP and KB have more similar IAPs than the EB. This study suggested that A. riparia is the most important IAP species in BBG and its surrounding areas.

           : Perspektif Pemberitaan Media

    • Authors: M. Danang Anggoro, San Afri Awang, Purwo Santoso, Lies Rahayu Wijayanti Faida
      Pages: 131 - 144
State Violence in Indonesian Conservation Area Conflict Management: Perspectives from The MediaAbstractThe imposition of conservation areas by the state through violence caused prolonged conflict in the management of conservation areas in Indonesia. Therefore, the need to understand and manage conflict as a holistic process guides this research, in which the goal is to better understand the dimensions of state violence. This research complements previous studies that are more focused on superficial symptoms, which have not fully been able to uncover the invisible levelsthat make up the dimensions of violence. This study uses online media, namely Kompas Online, which represents the general media, as well as Mongabay, which represents environmental media, including news related to conflicts in conservation areas for the period of 2011 - 2017. State violence in the news is described in the dimensions of violence using content analysis. The content analysis is carried out in this study and follows a framework for simplified content analysis from Krippendorf (2004) and Istania (2010) with the aim of conducting descriptive content analysis intended to describe a particular message or text (Rossy and Wahid, 2015), which is focused on the dimensions of state violence in the management of conservation areas. The dimensions of state violence can be fairly intact through the perspective of news in the mass media. This is helpful for better understanding conflicts that involve relations between the state and local communities due to the control of the management of conservation areas as a natural resource. To address the conflict, support is needed to find the identity of conservation area management through a cultural approach so as to build optimism that conflicts in the management of conservation areas
      can be handled properly.

  • Potensi Pemanfaatan Ipomoea pes-caprae (L.) R. Br. di Hutan Pantai
           Petanahan Kebumen

    • Authors: Frita Kusuma Wardhani, Erny Poedjirahajoe
      Pages: 145 - 153
Potential Utilization of Ipomoea pes-caprae (L.) R. Br. in the Coastal Forest Petanahan Kebumen DistrictAbstractVegetation that grows in coastal forests has high economic potential, one of which is caused by the high bioactive substances that have pharmacological properties. One species that has high potential as a source of natural medicine is Ipomoea pes-caprae (L.) R. Br. This study aims to examine the potential use of I. pes-caprae in its natural habitat in the coastal forest of Petanahan District, Kebumen Regency. Observations were made using the 1 x 1 meter quadratic method which was placed systematically. The results showed that the area closest to the coast had the highest biomass I. pes-caprae, with an average of 235.01 gr/m2. The distribution of these species is limited by competition and shade. In the pharmacological field, the phytochemical content in Ipomoea pes-caprae extract has high potential to be developed as a drug raw material. But its availability in the coastal forests of Petanahan District is still limited so it cannot be developed to become raw material for natural medicine.

  • Penyebaran Semut dalam Kawasan Hutan di Pulau Saparua, Propinsi Maluku

    • Authors: Fransina Latumahina
      Pages: 154 - 166
Spread of Ants in Forest Areas in The Island of Saparua Province Of MollucasAbstractAnts will respond to the presence of humans in their habitat, where the presence of humans through the extraction of forest products will have an impact on the spread of ants and their role in the forest ecosystem. Ant response is shown through changes in the value of diversity of species, abundance, and abundance that will change according to the pressure in their habitat. The research aims to determine the presence, abundance, and diversity of ants in the Forest of Tuhaha that have experienced pressure due to human presence. Three methods collect ants, namely, Hand Collecting, Pitfall Trap contains detergent solution, bait trap with bait in the form of sugar solution and tuna pieces. The results found 3615 ants where 592 ants using pitfall traps, 515 tails using the Bait Trap method with bait in the form of Raw Tuna Fish, 669 ants using bait in the form of a sugar solution, and 1839 using the Hand Collecting method. The highest ant species abundance was found in lane ten by 125%, and the highest species diversity index was 1.45 in lane 10, while the lowest species abundance was found in lane nine by 75 % and the lowest species diversity index was found in lane 9 by 0.52. The highest ant species richness found in lane 10 is 4.7, so it is assumed that several factors play an essential role in the spread of ants in the Tuhaha State Forest namely soil pH between 6.5 - 6.8, availability of organic matter, suitable air temperature between 250 o C - 27 0 C and vegetation cover.

  • Model Kelembagaan Lokal Kabupaten Konservasi Tambrauw di Papua Barat

    • Authors: Sepus M. Fatem, San Afri Awang, Ahmad Maryudi, Satyawan Pudyatmoko, Jonni Marwa
      Pages: 167 - 184
Abstract: Komitmen Politik pembentukan Tambrauw sebagai kabupaten konservasi di Papua Barat, mendorong terjadinya perubahan tatakelola pemerintahan konvensional menuju tatakelola konservasi. Local Institution Model of Tambrauw Conservation in West PapuaAbstractPolitical Commitment to establishing Tambrauw as a conservation district in West Papua, has led to changes in conventional governance towards conservation management. Thus the institution as a unit responsible for organizing conservation district activities needs to be designed to oversee the policies of the conservation district concerned. This study aims to design a local institutional model of Tambrauw Regency as a Conservation District. The design process of the local institutional model was carried out from June 2013 to December 2017 following the research and development method. Research data obtained from: (1) the results of expert interviews; (2) field notes, and (3) data suggesting improvements to the initial model draft and observers' observations on the implementation of trials (FGDs / Consultations) on a small and large scale. To see the significance of the comparison of the existing institutional models in the form of regional apparatus organizations (OPD) and the conservation district institutions offered, a t-test was conducted. The design process of the conservation district's local institutional building was carried out about the 8 key design principles offered by Ostrom on effective management institutions for common property. The results showed that conservation district institutions should be developed as a unit responsible for the mechanism of conservation district performance, which is non-body and more emphasized on the coordination function by the Agency for Regional Development Tambrauw Regency as coordinator of regional development planning.

  • Perceived Forest-based Ecosystem Services and Attitudes Toward Forest
Rehabilitation: A Case Study in the Upstream of Central Java, Indonesia

    • Authors: Prasetyo Nugroho, Shinya Numata, Nur Abdi Aprilianto
      Pages: 185 - 197
Abstract: Forest rehabilitation is essential in restoring forest-based ecosystemservices (ES) provided by forest area. However, the critical issue on how locals perceived importance of forest rehabilitation, and how forest rehabilitation generates, both direct and indirect, benefits for the adjacent communities has remained contentious. A questionnaire survey was employed to examine locals' perceived importance, perceived ES, and attitudes toward forest rehabilitation in a village adjacent to Perhutani's forest area in the upstream of a catchment in Central Java, Indonesia. In total, 90 usable questionnaires were collected. The findings indicate that their perceived pine-sap production, conserving forest area, and water availability are the importance of forest rehabilitation programs. Locals recognized various ES benefits, including provisioning, regulating, supporting, and cultural services, though the adverse impacts emerged. Spearman rank correlation analysis revealed that local's satisfaction with forest rehabilitation positively and significantly correlated with their positive perceptions and subsequently increase their willingness to be actively involved in forest conservation efforts. The findings also imply that forest managers should not only focus on delivering benefits but also be aware of the adverse impacts of forest rehabilitation and management practices, which are crucial for ensuring forest sustainability.

Abstract: Protected areas play important roles for protecting many endangered species in Indonesia. However, very limited information regarding roles of protected areas and non-protected areas for supporting the habitat of less-concerned carnivores in Java, leopard cat (Prionailurus bengalensis javanensis). We aim to assess the relative roles of non-protected areas for the habitat of this cat on the highly fragmented and populated island of Java. We develop species distribution modelling, using Maxent by integrating various sources of presence data of this species and environmental data. Our finding confirms that leopard cat can life in various habitat types but mainly patchy forest areas. While most of the protected areas are suitable for the habitat of this smallest cat on Java, the non-protected areas provide much larger areas for its habitat (66.8 %). Our findings highlighted the importance of maintaining connectivity among habitat patches in non-protected areas, habitat protection using current government policy on high conservation value forest and essential ecosystems areas.

Abstract: Pemanfaatan kayu jati dari pohon umur muda meningkat disebabkan adanya kesenjangan permintaan dengan ketersediaan kayu. Pengukuran sifat warna menggunakan sistem CIEL*a*b*. Extractives Content and Colour Properties of 11-year-old Perhutani Superior Teakwood from Ngawi Forest Management UnitAbstractThe utilization of young teak wood had increased due to the gap in demand and the supply of raw materials. To meet the high demand, Perhutani had planted the fast growing of superior teakwood (Jati Plus Perhutani/JPP). This vegetative reproduction may affect the wood properties. Extractive content is important considering its relationship with the natural durability of wood and colour properties. The purpose of this study was to find out the effect of radial and longitudinal directions on extractives content and colour properties from JPP. The JPP wood samples (11 years) were located in Ngawi Forest Management Unit. The observed factors were vertical (bottom, center, top) and radial (sapwood, outer heartwood, inner heartwood) directions. Wood extracts were obtained by successive extraction (toluene, ethanol, and hot water) in a soxhlet. Total phenolic content was also determined by Folin-Ciocalteu method in toluene soluble extract. Colour properties were determined by CIEL*a*b* system. The result showed that vertical direction had significant effect as the bottom part showed the highest value in ethanol extract content but it had lower value in total phenolic content. Brightness (L*) value was comparatively high at the top part, while redness (a*) value was high at the bottom part. The levels of toluene, ethanol, and total extract content had a significant different between sapwood and heartwood as well as between outer heartwood and inner heartwood. Based on radial direction, the colour was darker in outer heartwood compared to the other parts. The correlation degree between the values of hot water extract and L* was significant (r = -0.72) in sapwood part. In heartwood, the correlation between ethanol, hot water, and total extract contentwith L* values were negative (r = -0.70; -0.52; -0.78, respectively). The correlation between a* value and total phenolic content was moderately significant (r = -0.58). The comparatively low content of extractive compared to mature woods as well as inhomogeneity of colour properties in vertical position should be noticed for young JPP wood utilization.
