  • Thinning cycles as the key factor to improve stand productivity in alder

      Abstract: Considering the high demand for wood and other forest ecosystem services, planning and managing forest plantations to mitigate and answer these increasing issues is necessary. Thinning is one of the most common managing practices for manipulating the growth of planted trees. However, studies about the impact of the thinning-cycle on stand and soil properties are rare for Alnus subcordata C.A.Mey. in Hyrcanian Forests. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of thinning-cycles on stand and soil properties in the Alnus subcordata plantation in the Hyrcanian Forests, Northern Iran. Three neighboring alder plantations were selected with different thinning treatment cycles: the one-time thinning-cycle (T1, thinned in 2007), three-time thinning-cycle (T3, thinned in 2005, 2010, and 2015), and no thinning as the control (C). In each plantation, 15 plots (20×20 m) were systematic-randomly established (75×50 m grid). In each plot, the characteristics of trees (diameter at breast height (DBH) and total height) and total percentage of vegetation cover were recorded. Soil physiochemical properties were studied by taking samples (0-10 cm) from each plot. The highest value of DBH, total height, tree volume, and basal area and the lowest amount of the total height to DBH ratio were observed in T3. The highest levels of vegetation diversity, evenness, and richness indices were obtained in T3. Soil moisture was significantly higher in the control. The soil pH, electrical conductivity, nitrogen, and potassium were significantly higher in T3. According to the principal component analysis, there was no difference between T1 and control. For this reason, T3 was a more beneficial treatment. Our findings suggested that in alder plantations, the reduction of above and belowground competition via the three-time thinning-cycle, in addition to the financial benefits, not only improves the quality and quantity of the remaining trees but also has a significant potential to improve soil productivity.

  • Log traceability and supply-chain verification by DNA markers in Fagus
           sylvatica L. in Italy

      Abstract: Verifying the match of a timber log with its population of origin represents a meaningful improvement for the preservation and valorisation of the wood chain.In this study, we tested the applicability of the molecular approach for tracing the supply chain of timber of European beech (Fagus sylvatica L.) to check if the declared source of timber truly complied with the declared origin.Samples were collected in four sawmills and in the declared forest standing populations. Different assignment tests for the “unknown” timber were used. Ordination pattern and STRUCTURE analyses identified three clusters and one case of mismatch between the analysed wood and the declared source. The Bayesian method (GeneClass2) and the machine learning approach (AssignPop) assigned 42-72% of the cases to the proper source, with higher uncertainty in one site.This study permitted to detect the lack of congruence of the declared wood source with the actual logging site by DNA markers, screening sampling reference populations (standing trees) and timber from sawmills. Thus, the application of DNA markers confirmed to be able to find failure in the wood supply chain. This application could act as a benchmark to further develop an independent supply-chain verification system that should be implemented as part of the inventory process.

  • A preliminary study of chemical properties in temperate forest fire of the
           Chilean Andean range for planning of ecosystems restoration

      Abstract: Despite vegetation in fire-prone landscapes having different fire adaptations, a change in the worldwide fire regime could affect all ecosystem processes and systems. In this sense, soil systems play a key role in ecosystems, not only providing inorganic nutrients to plants, but also serve as filter water and carbon storage. The aim of this research was to identify the effects of wildfire on the chemical properties of young volcanic soils over the medium-term in two natural protected areas of Andean Mountain range. A comparative statistical analysis was performed to identify significant differences in different soil parameters between forty-eight unburned and burned soil samples. Therefore, significant differences were identified between evaluated samples in organic matter, macronutrients, micronutrients, and cation exchange capacity. Whilst organic soil matter and potassium content substantially increased due to incomplete vegetation combustion; the presence of calcium content and cation exchange capacity decreased with the occurrence of fire. Our findings showed that there were significant differences between unburned soils or a soil that had been burned once and soil that had been burned twice in thirteen years. These findings should support decision making, improving the selection of passive or active restoration actions and thus efficiency in forest management.

  • Under the “publish or perish” mantra and the race for grants, insights
           to catalyze research into wood science

      Abstract: The quality of research is the lifeline to get a good wood science, as science generally; embracing a ‘publish but don’t perish’ stance might be a valuable insight to stride this science forward. A focus on quality rather than quantity of published material would greatly reinvigorate our science and entrepreneurial capabilities, ensure continued public trust in the academic enterprise, address the needs and expectations of the 21st-century society, and help to secure a truly sustainable future, one that responsibly maintains the well-being of nature and people. Stimulating wood-based innovation certainly develops a fundamental niche in such sustainable future fitting the main goals of the sustainable development.

  • Hormetic effect of Gamma rays on Pinus pseudostrobus Lindl. seed

      Abstract: Pinus pseudostrobus Lindl. is one of the most used conifer species in reforestation projects. However, it presents some problems with the viability of its seeds. Although the usefulness of the radiostimulant effect of gamma rays in processes such as germination and growth of forest species has been demonstrated, there is no information available on this species. For this reason, it was proposed to evaluate the "hormetic effects" of low doses (0.5, 1.5, 3.0, 5.0, and 7.5 Gy) of gamma rays (60Co Theratron 780E Unit) on germination capacity, seedling growth, and chlorophyll content in this species. The results showed that all doses (0.5, 1.5, 3.0, 5.0, and 7.5 Gy) improved germination percentage, but not seedling growth. The highest germination percentage was recorded at 61.53 percent with the 0.5 Gy dose, while the gamma doses of 1.5 and 3.0 Gy ranked second with 53.84%. The height and diameter of seedlings from 0, 0.5, 1.5, and 3.0 Gy irradiated seeds did not show significant differences. However, as the dose increases, the stress generates a decrease in growth. The photosynthetic pigment content was lower at doses of 0.5 and 1.5 Gy (Ch a= 0.35, Ch b = 0.15, Ch a+b = 0.50, Car = 0.18). This study is important because it shows that the stimulatory effects of low gamma doses on germination and seedling growth may not be the same.

  • Altitudinal variation in morphometric traits of pod, seed, and seedling
           growth of Bauhinia variegata L. in Garhwal Himalaya

      Abstract: Bauhinia variegata L. is a fast growing tree that has the ability to fix atmospheric nitrogen. The aims of the present study was to estimate the variability in pod, seed and seedling growth and biomass production in 10 populations of B. variegata in Garhwal Himalaya. Significant variations were observed in pod, seed traits, seed germination, seedling growth and biomass production among populations. Among morphological traits, the seed weight was one of the most variable characters. Among seedling attributes, the seedlings vigour index, roots length, leaves dry weight and roots dry weight were found more variable characters. Geographical variables (altitude, latitude, longitude, temperature and rainfall) significantly (p<0.05) influenced the pod size, seed morphological traits, seed germination, seedling growth characters and allocation of biomass. Broad-sense heritability (h2) resulted moderate to high for pod characters, seed morphological traits and all the seedling growth parameters (except the leaves dry weight and survival percentage). These variations might be geographically structured and genetically controlled.

  • Forest management scenarios to reduce the fire risk in chestnut coppices
           in the Mediterranean area

      Abstract: Chestnut coppices are among the formation most affected by fires in the Mediterranean environment. In the absence of cultivation treatments, the structure of the stands appears without vertical and horizontal interruptions in the canopy, with a considerable expansion of the fuel load. In this study, we showed the importance of silvicultural interventions on the mitigation of the fire in the chestnut coppices of southern Italy. In the study sites, we estimated the pyrological potential in terms of heat energy produced per surface unit and the variation in the critical surface intensity. Following silvicultural interventions, the reduction of heat energy is between 12.5 and 50%, and the extinguishing water saving are between 270 and 1,157 Mg·ha-1. The reduction of the probability of the passage of the surface fire to a crown fire can be up to 375%. With the same environmental conditions and dendro-structural characteristics, most effective interventions were observed for rotation cycles of 30 years, compared to shorter rotation cycles. This study showed the importance that silvicultural interventions, such as cleaning and bottom-up thinning, have at both the stand and territorial level on fire risk mitigation.
