  • Agricultural education for youth empowerment in Nigeria: a brief review.

      Abstract: This study was carried out to review agricultural education for youth empowerment in Nigeria. The study adopted a qualitative research approach and existing studies on related studies were sourced online. The major findings of the study disclosed that motivational strategies for effective implementation of youth empowerment programmes in Nigeria include: adequate remuneration of trainers, disbursement of long and short term loans, bursary scheme for youth educational empowerment, sharing of sewing machines, among others. Supervisory strategies for effective implementation of youth empowerment programmes in Nigeria include, provision of adequate supervision task force for youth empowerment programmes and preparation of guidelines for reporting youth empowerment training activities. Managerial strategies for effective implementation of youth empowerment programmes in Nigeria among others include: development of scopes and sequence of the training programmes, provision of a curriculum for youth empowerment programmes and proper adherence to the curriculum contents. The policy strategies for effective implementation of youth empowerment programmes in Nigeria include, promulgation of decree for compulsory youth empowerment training programmes and centres, adoption of youth oriented policies in the States and formulation of decrees for formal entrepreneurship training programmes in institutions. Based on the findings of the study, the following recommendations were made: youth empowerment programmes should be introduced in the curriculum of institutions of higher learning. Tertiary institutions should put in efforts in teaching vocational education and agricultural skills acquisition programmes to enable every Nigerian to be self-reliant, self-developed and creative.

  • Length-weight relationship of Parachanna obscura from Egbe Reservoir,
           Ekiti State, Southwest Nigeria

      Abstract: Length-weight relationship and condition factor play significant roles in fisheries management. The growth pattern and wellbeing of Parachanna obscura from Egbe Reservoir was evaluated employing length-weight relationship and Fulton’s Condition Factor (K). One hundred specimens of the fish were procured from artisanal fishermen between January and April, 2018. Fish were fixed in 10% Formalin and transported to the laboratory for data collection. Sex ratio for the fish samples was 1:1.33 in favour of male. The total length of the sampled fish ranged between 17.9 and 36.1cm. Fish weight ranged from 88.1 to 425.2g. The parameter ‘b’ for the fish was 2.359 in the Reservoir, denoting negative allometric growth pattern. The correlation coefficient (r2) was 0.571. Mean Condition Factor of the fish was found to be 0.938, thus indicating the suitability of the habitat to promote the wellbeing of the fish. Females appeared lengthier and heavier. Over seventy percent of the fish samples had lengths higher than the reported Lm50 for the species. The results of this study revealed that the fish appeared not threatened in the habitat and could therefore serve a basis for proposing management strategies for the exploitation of fisheries resources of the reservoir.

  • Sensory, chemical and nutritional evaluation of flour blends for
           preparation of stiff dough

      Abstract: One of the nutritional advantages of flour blend is to promote the nutritional composition of indigenous crops for food application. This study utilized, African yam bean (Sphenostylis stenocarpa) and unripe plantain (Musa paradisca) to create flour blends at different ratios of 100:0 (GAB), 90:10 (ORE), 80:20 (TAM), 70:30 (MFY), 60:40 (MED) and 50:50 (KSK). These blends were subjected to calcium, iron, magnesium and potassium; pasting; anti-nutritional factors and colour using Completely Randomized Design (CRD). The blends were made into pastes [stiff dough (amala)] and subjected to sensory evaluation. Nutritionally derived essential elements such as calcium (0.01-0.02), iron (0.08-0.35), magnesium (0.11-0.18) and potassium (0.83-1.30) contents increased with increase in the addition of African yam bean flour. Composite flours showed improved chromaticity in the unripe plantain flour. The peak (1733-4205), trough (1609-3199), breakdown (124-1007), final viscosity (2246-4901) and setback (63-1703) decreased while peak time (5.07-5.90) and pasting temperature (79.80-83.70) increased as African yam bean flour increases. MFY blend from blends performed best in overall acceptability but there was no significant difference (p>0.05) among other samples. Results from this study have further shown the possibility of enhancing the nutritional composition of stiff dough (Amala) using African yam bean and unripe plantain flours.

  • Investigation into dimensional and strength properties of cement bonded
           particleboard produced from agro-waste (maize cob) and Sterculia
           tragacantha sawdust

      Abstract: Agricultural waste management is part of the ecological cycle in which everything is cycled and recycled, recycling is maintained in the eco-system by waste management, all the plant wastes are placed at the right place and right time for the best utilization in order to convert into useful products and pollution control. This study examined the use of agro-waste (maize cob) and Sterculia tragacantha sawdust at varying blending proportions to produce cement particle boards. Boards of dimensions 35cm by 35cm by 1cm were produced from cement and agro-waste (maize cob) and Sterculia tragacantha sawdust at different blending proportionswith additive (CaCl2) at different concentration. Physical properties such as water absorption and thickness swelling, and mechanical properties (Modulus of Rupture (MOR) and Modulus of Elasticity (MOE)) were investigated. It was observed that the lowest mean values of water absorption of 24 and 48 hours was 12.42% and 16.44% respectively which were obtained at the highest proportion of maize cob particle content and additive concentration of 3% while the highest mean values at 24 hrs and 48 hrs at 24.26%, and 26.23% respectively were obtained at the lowest maize cob particle content and lowest additive concentration of 1%. The mean values of thickness swelling at 24 hours ranged from 0.61% to 2.92%, with the lowest value showing the least swollen board. The mean values of the thickness swelling at 48 hours ranged from 1.30% to 3.18%. The thickness swelling increased as the quantity of maize cob particles decreased. Mean values of MOE and MOR obtained for this study ranged from 339.48 N/mm3 to 3425.73 N/mm3 and 2.10 N/mm3 to 4.56 N/mm3 for all the blending ratios and additive concentrations. These results show that strength properties of, the board are greatly influenced by blending proportion. From the results obtained in this study, weight gained, weight lost, volumetric shrinkage, and strength properties were influenced by production variables.it can therefore be concluded that particles made from agro-waste and wood particles of Sterculia tragacantha could be recycled for particleboard production. The results of the sorption properties revealed that the particleboards can favorably withstand dry and wet climatic conditions.

  • Effect of different potting media on the early growth of Mansonia

      Abstract: The effect of different potting media on the early growth of Mansonia altissima was investigated with a view to producing viable and vigorous planting stock of the species for afforestation and reforestation programs. The experiment was laid out in a Completely Randomized Design (CRD) consisting of nine (9) treatments of potting media with 9 replicates; T1- riversand (400g) + topsoil (400g) + poultry manure (400g) + cow dung (400g), T2- riversand (400g) + topsoil (800g) + poultry manure (400g) , T3- riversand (400g) + topsoil (800g) + cow dung (400g), T4- topsoil (1200g) + cow dung (400g), T5 - topsoil (1200g) + poultry manure (400g), T6- topsoil (800g) + riversand (800g), T7- topsoil (800g) + cow dung (800g), T8 - topsoil (800g) + poultry manure (800g) and T9- (control 1600g riversand). Data obtained were subjected to analysis of variance (ANOVA) and mean separation using Duncan Multiple Range Test (DMRT) at 5% level of significance. The results showed that there were significant differences (p<0.05) among the treatments in plant height, stem diameter, leaf and biomass production. T3 had the best performance in plant height (32.78cm), stem diameter (3.49mm) while T7 had the highest leaf production (32.0) and T6, the highest biomass production of 6.25g. However, T9 (control) gave the minimum results of mean plant height (10.10cm), mean leaf production (8.91) and biomass production (1.01g) but T8 produced least stem diameter (1.32mm). The study therefore showed that incorporation of optimum level of organic manure into the potting media will improve growth of M.altissima seedlings.

  • Evaluation of durability performance of rice husk - cement bonded
           particleboards

      Abstract: Alternative resources as substitute for wood raw materials has increased in the particleboard industry because of the depletion of forest resources. Studies of particleboard using wood residues and agricultural by-products have examined wheat straw, rice straws, husks, bagasse, walnut/almond shells, and palm trunks. Rice husk is the by-product in rice milling operation with an approximately 20 percent of the total weight of the paddy grain being processed. Despite the abundant nature of this waste product and its unique physical and chemical properties, it is not being fully harnessed in Nigeria. Only a little portion of the rice husk produced is utilized in a meaningful way, the remainder is burnt into ashes or dumped as a solid waste with little being used in animal feed formulation. Particle board was produced from rice husk, an agro-waste and cement as binder. Physical and mechanical properties of the board were determined. The results show that, the percentage of thickness swelling and water absorption increased with increase in proportion of the binder to the rice husk. The Modulus of elasticity (MOE) values increase with increased mixing ratio for both the board thickness, while MOR values decrease with increase in mixing ratio for both particle sizes. Since the construction industry is a growing one, the use of renewable resources such as rice husk can reduce the strain on forest resource and form an excellent replacement for wood and wood based composite materials.

      Abstract: Despite the high medicinal properties of Tetrapleura tetraptera to most of the people of Nigeria and other nations of the world, it only exist as a protected and semi domesticated plant. This study was carried out to determine the effect of green manure (Chromolena odorata and Tithonia diversifolia) on the growth of Tetrapleura tetraptera seedlings with a view to enhancing growth without causing any damage to the environment. The treatments were Chromolena odorata leaves (5g, 10g, 15g and 20g), Tithonia diversifolia leaves (5g, 10g, 15g and 20g) and the control. Thirty-six (36) healthy seedlings were selected and transplanted into polythene pots filled with 1 kg of loamy soil with different levels of C. odorata and T. diversifolia. Each treatment was replicated four times and laid out in a Completely Randomized Design (CRD). Initial growth parameters were taken after transplanting into polythene pots and every other data were collected every two weeks for the period of 12 weeks. The data collected were height growth (cm) collar diameter (cm) and leaf production. Data collected were subjected to Analysis of Variance (ANOVA). Results from ANOVA revealed that there was no significant (p>0.05) difference among the treatments used at 5% level of probability which implies that varying level of green manure employed shows no significant effect on the height, stem diameter and leaf production of T. tetrapleura seedlings.

      Abstract: Caesalpinia bonduc is a plant that has high medicinal properties and the seeds are used for games. Despite the importance of this species, little or no attention is given to its regeneration. Hence this study investigated the effects of pre-treatment and sowing media on the germination of C. bonduc. The seeds were subjected to different pre-treatments; T1=Topsoil + Soaking; T2=River sand + Soaking; T3= Topsoil + Nicking; T4= River sand + Nicking; T5=Topsoil + Nicking and Soaking; T6=River sand + Nicking and Soaking; T7= Topsoil and T8= River sand. The soaking period used for this study was 24 hours while file was used for nicking the seeds. Results revealed that there was significant (p<0.05) difference in the germination of the seeds of S. bonduc subjected to different treatments. Mean value result indicated that control for topsoil gave the highest germination, followed by control for river sand while topsoil + nicking + soaking and river sand + nicking + soaking gave the least germination. It was deduced from this study that freshly collected matured seeds of C. bonduc do not require any pre-treatment for germination to occur. This study also revealed that freshly collected seeds of C. bonduc do not have any dormancy problem as the seeds germinated after 9 days of sowing. Seeds of C. bonduc harvested can be planted immediately for higher germination percentage.

  • Livelihood diversification choices of forest dwellers in Onigambari Forest
           Reserve, Oyo State, Nigeria

      Abstract: The study assessed the livelihood diversification choices of forest dwellers in Onigambari Forest Reserve, Oyo State, Nigeria. A multi-staged sampling technique was used to select ninety-five (95) respondents while data was collected using structured questionnaires. The data generated from the survey were analysed using descriptive statistics and a multinomial logistic regression model. The descriptive result revealed that a slight majority (52.63%) of the households were headed by males and that the average age of the respondents stood at 54.4 years with 86.32% of them having a formal education. Farming is the predominant occupation in the study area with the majority (54.74%) of the household engaged in a combination of farm and non-farm activities, 30.53% of them engaged in only non-farm activities. The factors influencing the choice of non-farm strategy are: having at least secondary education (p<0.01) which was positive and significant while the gender of household head (p<0.01) was negative and significant. Concerning the choice of the combination of farm and non-farm strategy as a livelihood option, marital status (p<0.01) and having at least secondary education (p<0.05) were positive and significant while age of household head (p<0.01) was negative and significant. The study, therefore, recommended the promotion and intensification of technical and financial capacity of the dwellers to undertake conservation-friendly diversification approaches as an alternative strategy to minimize forest exploitation and dependence.

  • Physical and mechanical properties of plastic bonded boards produced from
           palm kernel chaff

      Abstract: The physical and mechanical properties of plastic bonded boards (PBB) produced from palm kernel chaff fibers were evaluated. In this study, the effects of plastic/fiber ratio of 1:1, 2:1 and 3:1 and board density of 800kg/m3, 900kg/m3, and 1000kg/m3 on water absorption (WA), thickness swelling (TS), modulus of rupture (MOR) and modulus of elasticity (MOE) were investigated. PBB produced exhibited mean values ranging from 4.55 to 28.19% for WA, 0.7 to 7.32% for TS, 7.54 to 30.27N/mm2 for MOR and 8307.05 to 19820.52 N/mm2 for MOE. Increase in mixing ratio and board density caused a decrease in thickness swelling, water absorption properties. The lowest value were obtained from the boards produced at the highest mixing ratio (3:1) and at board density (1000kg/m3) which are most dimensionally stable and show reduction in thickness movement as they have the lowest value after 24hours cold water immersion. It was also observed that the strength properties were affected by plastic/palm kernel fiber mixing ratio and board density. The MOR and MOE value increased with increase in mixing ratio level from 1:1 to 3:1 and board density from 800g/mm2 to 1000g/mm2 were strongest and dimensional stable than those produced at other levels. All the production variables have significant effect on all the properties investigated.
