  • Selection of Optimum Pouring Conditions for Improvement of Aluminum Alloy
           Castings in Ghana

    • Authors: Francis Davis, Prince Yaw Andoh, Godwin Adablah
      Pages: 1 - 17
Abstract: It has been discovered that the pouring conditions (temperature of the molten aluminum alloy and pouring speed) have adverse effects on the mechanical properties of the cast aluminum alloy, either directly or indirectly. This paper develops a model to predict the effect of pouring conditions on the mechanical properties of the cast Aluminum alloy. In this work a 22 factorial design was applied to investigate the effects of temperature of the molten aluminum alloy and pouring speed on three mechanical properties, namely; the hardness, ultimate tensile strength, and elongation. The developed models were used to select optimum pouring conditions for the improvement of the Aluminum alloy in manufacturing companies in Ghana. The study revealed that increasing the pouring conditions causes the hardness to decease as well as the ultimate tensile strength, and elongation. Also, the two - factor interaction effect of the pouring speed and temperature of the molten aluminum alloy on hardness is significant as the interaction effect decreases with increase in hardness but has insignificant effect on the elongation and the ultimate tensile strength. It is established that the optimal pouring conditions to improve the mechanical properties for the production of the Aluminum alloys are 2 cm/s for the pouring speed and 700 ℃ for the temperature of the molten aluminum alloy producing a hardness of 61 HB, ultimate tensile strength of 115 N/mm2 and 17 %   elongation.

  • Prenatal Diagnosis and Genetic Characterization of Toxoplasmosis in
Immunocompetent and Immunocompromised Pregnant Women and the Risk of
Congenital Toxoplasmosis: A Prospective Study in Ghana

    • Authors: Bhavana Singh , Alex Yaw Debrah , Linda Batsa Debrah , Georgina Djameh
      Pages: 18 - 42
Abstract: Background: Toxoplasmosis, a protozoan parasitic disease caused by Toxoplasma gondii is of public health concern. Studies on trans-placental transmission of T. gondii is limited in Africa. This study aimed at assessing the seroprevalence and genetically characterize T. gondii infection among pregnant women. Methods: HIV-negative pregnant women in their first trimester and HIV-positive pregnant women attending Antenatal Clinic at a University Hospital were screened for anti-Toxoplasma antibodies (IgG and IgM) using ELISA. Multi-locus gene detection was done using nested Polymerase Chain Reaction to target the Surface Antigen Gene 3 and the Dense Granule Antigen protein 6 of T. gondii parasite, followed by sequencing to identify the prevalent T. gondii strain in Ghana.  Results: The prevalence of acute T. gondii infection (ATI) among the HIV-negative pregnant women was 1.5% (6/400), transmission rate was 50% (3/6) and prevalence of congenital toxoplasmosis (CT) was 0.75% (3/400). From HIV-positive women, the prevalence of ATI was 56% (14/25), transmission rate 57% (8/14) and prevalence of CT  32% (8/25). Older aged and unemployed HIV positive women were significantly associated with T. gondii seropositivity (p=0.021) and (p=0.016) respectively. T. gondii DNA was detected in 16.7% (12/72) samples and were clonal type GRA6 type II sequences.  Conclusion: Seroprevalence of toxoplasmosis were higher in HIV-positive pregnant women. The seropositivity to T. gondii specific antibodies in the babies did not fully translate into clinical Toxoplasmosis. The strain identified was the clonal type GRA6 type II sequence. It is important to follow newborn with CT for 10 years for clinical toxoplasmosis.

  • Glaucoma Awareness, Knowledge, and Eye-Care Seeking Behaviour Among
First-Degree Relatives of Glaucoma Patients at a Regional Hospital in
           Ghana

    • Authors: Michel Pascal Tchiakpe , Fiti Kwateng , Ebenezer Justice Quainoo , Mohammed Abdul-Kabir , Isaiah Osei Duah Junior, Hubert Osei Acheampong
      Pages: 43 - 57
Abstract: Glaucoma is the leading cause of irreversible blindness worldwide. Early detection and treatment can prevent blindness. Individuals, especially those with positive family history of glaucoma ought to have knowledge of the disease and seek assessment regularly for early detection and treatment of the disease. The study explores and describes glaucoma awareness, knowledge, and eye care-seeking behavior of first-degree relatives of glaucoma patients who attend the Accra Regional Hospital Eye Unit. The descriptive cross-sectional study utilized a questionnaire to interview 306 conveniently sampled participants with mean ± SD age of 35.5 ± 10.3 years. Among participants, 52.6% were males. There was a moderate level of awareness of glaucoma (60.8%) among study participants. Most respondents did not know the risk factors of glaucoma (66.3%), the asymptomatic nature of glaucoma (80.7%), and irreversibility of vision loss in glaucoma (89.6%). Only 23.2% of respondents had screened for glaucoma. Social media was the main source of glaucoma awareness (45.7%) and information to screen for glaucoma (52.4%). The occupation (p=0.001) and level of education (p<0.0005) of respondents were significantly associated with knowledge of glaucoma. Similarly, the occupation (p=0.001), level of education (p=0.035), and being informed to screen for glaucoma (p<0.0001) were significantly associated with glaucoma screening. Knowledge of glaucoma and glaucoma screening among first degree relatives of glaucoma patients is low. There is the need for eye-care professionals to provide accurate and comprehensive education on glaucoma and also embark on targeted glaucoma screening programs.

  • Development of Convenient Cocoyam Pottage (Mpotompoto)

    • Authors: Alexandra Obenewaa Kwakye , Abena Boakye, Faustina Dufie Wireko-Manu, Ibok Oduro
      Pages: 58 - 70
Abstract: This study explored the feasibility of developing a ready-to-prepare cocoyam pottage, 'mpotompoto' to meet consumers' need for convenience in traditional dishes. Cocoyam chunks (1.2cm x 1.2cm x 1.2cm) were pre-gelatinized to obtain the instant base ingredient, and an accompanying spice-mix recipe was developed. Standard methods were used to determine the moisture content and selected functional properties of the ready-to-prepare base product. A consumer panel of fifty assessors who were familiar with sensory testing evaluated the product's organoleptic properties. A dish following a traditional recipe was used as control. The moisture content of the instant base was low (10%), signifying the potential for good storability. The water absorption capacity, oil absorption capacity, swelling power and solubility were 247.39 ± 7.12%, 87.98 ± 3.76%, 6.44 ± 0.58% and 3.78 ± 0.29%, respectively, indicating desirable functional characteristics for reconstitution. The consumer panel generally appreciated all evaluated products with mean likeness scores between 5 and 6 for all tested attributes on a 7-point hedonic scale. The convenient cocoyam pottage (mpotompoto) mimicked the traditionally prepared 'mpotompoto'. The study provides baseline information that can be commercially

  • Internet Addiction and Correlates Among Tertiary Students in a Sub-Saharan
African Country – Case of KNUST, Ghana: A Follow Up Study

    • Authors: Nceba Z. Somhlaba, Christian Amoah Amoah, Benjamin Amoah, Ebenezer Otu Ayeboafo Ansah, Frances Emily Owusu-Ansah
      Pages: 71 - 86
Abstract: Background:  A major drawback of the revolutionary technology of the internet is the tendency for addiction. Internet addiction (IA) is a modern menace affecting mostly the youth. Preventive counseling (PC) is needed to deal with this growing public health concern, however empirical data as a basis in terms of prevalence and corelates are non – existent in Ghana. Objectives: This study aimed to assess the prevalence of IA and its psychological corelates among Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) students. Methods: Online cross-sectional method was used to survey one thousand, one hundred and sixty-five (1,165) students. Internet Addiction Test (IAT), Beck’s Depressive Inventory (BDI), Index of Self-Esteem (ISE), Revised UCLA Loneliness Scale (RULS) and Satisfaction with Life (SWL) measures were used for data collection. The data was analyzed using statistical package for social sciences (SPSS) version 25. Results: 36.2% of the study participants (SPs) were normal internet users and 39%, 19.0% and 1.1% were mildly, moderately and severely addicted to the internet respectively. Also, with higher scores indicating greater magnitude of problem, there were significant positive correlations between IAT and their Self-esteem (r = 0.288, N= 1165, p = 0.000), loneliness (r = 0.228, N= 1165, p = 0.000) and depression (r = 0.270, N= 1165, p = 0.000) scores. Moreover, there was a significant inverse relationship with their IAT and SWL (r = - 0.209, p = 0.000) scores. Conclusion: Approximately 1% of KNUST students sampled need addictive psychotherapeutic intervention. Also 58% (i.e. 39% mild plus 19.0% moderate prevalence of addiction) need preemptive counselling since they stand the chance of continuing to the severe end of IA continuum. Implications for policy, promotion of preventive health behaviors and clinical intervention at the institutional and national levels have been discussed.

  • Revenue Mobilisation by Local Governments in Ghana: The Potentials of
Investment in Metal Souvenirs for Tourists

    • Authors: Clifford Amoako, Ronald Adamtey , Benjamin Doe, Dorothy Adamtey
      Pages: 87 - 105
Abstract: The study looks at how local government authorities struggling to mobilise sufficient local revenues can turn to tourism given its potential to offer more stable local revenues. Previous studies have supported tourism as an important revenue source but do not provide the form in which local governments can leverage on tourism to enhance their local revenues. This study employs both quantitative and qualitative approaches to look at popular tourist sites in the Ashanti Region of Ghana -the Manhyia Palace museum, Okomfo Anokye sword, Bobiri butterfly sanctuary and Lake Bosomtwe. The study interviewed 400 tourists, 20 manufacturers of metal souvenirs, 3 local government officials, 2 officials of the Ghana Tourist Authority and 4 tour guides. The study revealed that investing in the production of metal souvenirs for specific tourist attractions can help local governments raise revenue due to increased tourist arrivals and high demand for metal souvenirs by tourists yet this avenue is under explored. The study proffers that local governments invest in the production of souvenirs by supporting the local artisans through partnership arrangements for them to produce for the Assemblies to supply to tourists at the various tourist sites.

  • Cooking Modulates the Antioxidant Activities of rhizomes of Zingiber
officinale Rosco and Curcuma longa L.

    • Authors: Babatunde Oso, Deborah Okonmah, Anne Adeyanju
      Pages: 106 - 115
Abstract: This research was aimed at investigating the influence of cooking on the anti-oxidative potentials of the rhizomes of Zingiber officinale Rosco and Curcuma longa L. The investigations were performed on both raw and cooked aqueous infusions of the rhizomes. The antioxidant potentials were assessed through the estimations of oxidant scavenging capacities, lipid peroxidation inhibition potential and reducing capacities. Further investigations were carried out on the phytochemical analyses of the extracts through the assessments of phenolic and flavonoid contents. The results revealed the radical scavenging capacities of the infusions of the rhizomes when cooked reduced statistically (p<0.05). Similar changes were observed in the nitric oxide scavenging activity and inhibition of lipid peroxidation of both extracts. On the contrary, the phenolics in the infusions were enhanced. This study demonstrated that the impact of cooking on the antioxidant properties of these rhizomes could be determined nature of the phytocomponents and the thermally-induced changes occurring during cooking.

  • Assessing Job Satisfaction of Public Universities in Ghana: A Case Study
           of KNUST

    • Authors: Henry Opoku Akosah, Henry Harry Akosah
      Pages: 116 - 130
Abstract: Job satisfaction affects employee performance. Still, the level of job satisfaction of various categories of staff within an organisation, its motivation factors and implications on the management of human resources demand an in-depth study to uncover issues that have not been adequately addressed. This paper probes into these factors affecting job satisfaction of various categories of staff at KNUST to improve job satisfaction and work performance. The study adopted the quantitative approach to research, using stratified and simple random sampling techniques to collect data and SPSS to analyse the data. The study revealed a significant statistical relationship between the category of staff and the level of job satisfaction.
It was also found that the factor which mainly contributes to job satisfaction of junior staff is anachievement. For senior staff, it is relationships, while for senior members, it is the work itself. The study further revealed that improving teaching and working conditions is the preferred way of improving job satisfaction. The study, therefore, recommends placement of emphasis on the provision of a congenial environment and the requisite tools and facilities, among others, to improve the job satisfaction of staff
