  • Impact of Selected Factors on Farm Income for the Alabama Black Belt
           Counties and Non-Alabama Black Belt Counties

      Abstract: The study examined the impact of selected factors on farm income in the Alabama Black Belt Counties (ABBCs) and Non-Alabama Black Belt Counties (NABBCs). Data were obtained from the 2017 Census of Agriculture and analyzed using ordinary least square regression analysis. The results revealed that for the ABBCs, average size of farms, government payments, and average farm production expenses significantly affected average cash farm income (ACFI); for the NABBCs, median size of farms, government payments, and average farm production expenses significantly affected ACFI. Furthermore, for the ABBCs, average size of farms, government payments, and total farm production expenses significantly impacted net cash farm income (NCFI); for the NABBCs, median size of farms and total farm production expenses significantly impacted NCFI. The findings suggest that the average size of farms, government payments, and expenses matter in the ABBCs; and median size of farms, government payments, and expenses matter in the NABBCs.

  • Factors Associated with Attracting Business and Industry to Selected Black
           Belt Counties of Alabama

      Abstract: There is limited recent research on the economic development strategies that local officials, state, and federal governments are employing in rural Alabama. To better understand these strategies, the data were collected from local community officials in two rural Alabama counties. The objectives are to examine what efforts are being used, and what resources are available for economic development efforts. Data were analyzed using hierarchical regression analyses to test the hypothesis that past community action and community solidarity variables can contribute to a higher probability of recruiting business and industry than will be predicted by the ecological characteristics of the communities alone. The findings indicate past community action has a substantial positive effect and is, in fact, the best predictor of efforts to recruit business and industry among several variables selected from the previous literature.

  • Prevalence of Gastrointestinal Parasites in Lactating Kiko Does and their
           Kids in Woodlands with Supplements

      Abstract: Gastrointestinal (GI) parasites pose a major health concern in goats raised in pastures. The study objective was to evaluate GI parasites’ prevalence in lactating Kiko does and kids stocked in woodlands with supplemental grazing or feedstuffs. Seventeen lactating Kiko does, and their thirty-three kids were divided into two groups. Group 1 was supplemented with grazing in silvopastures and Group 2 with ad libitum hay and corn (0.5% of metabolic weight) along with stocking in woodland plots rotationally. Fecal samples were analyzed for type and quantity of GI parasites from animals having FAMACHA score 3 and higher. Group-1 does showed a better FAMACHA score and lower parasite infestation vs. Group-2 does. However, kids in Group 1 had a higher infestation of helminth parasites, but lower coccidia counts. This study indicated that grazing quality pastures is a better option for supplementing lactating does stocked in woodlands vs. feedstuffs.

  • Evaluating the Effect of Woodchips on Soil Matric Potential, Temperature,
           Weed Biomass, and Yield of Selected Crops

      Abstract: Organic mulches are very popular for weed control in sustainable agricultural systems where the application of synthetic herbicides is restricted. A study was conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of organic mulch in controlling weeds, enhancing soil matric potential, and soil temperature. Blended hardwood mulch was applied to the soil surface at a thickness of 10 cm. The experimental design was laid out as a completely randomized design with two treatments, viz., mulch and no-mulch, replicated 5 times. Data were collected during the growing period for weed biomass, soil matric potential, soil temperature, and yield of selected crops. Results from a two-way ANOVA revealed that the mulch treatments significantly (p≤0.50) reduced weed biomass, and soil temperature while increasing the soil matric potential and yields of okra, tomatoes, squash, and basil. It was concluded that the use of organic mulch was beneficial for weed control and increasing crop yield.

  • Two Inter-Row Spacing and Staggered Planting on Collard (Brassica oleracea
           L. var. acephala DC.) Yield in a Wiregrass Tunnel House

      Abstract: There is interest among small vegetable producers to grow collards in Tunnel Houses during the winter months. Consequently, the purpose of this study was to determine if collard yields could be increased by reducing row spacing and increasing plant density. This study had four treatments replicated three times, and “Georgia” and “Hi-Crop Hybrid” collards were transplanted on single, and staggered rows spaced 18” and 24” apart in a split-split-plot design. At 45 days after transplanting 50% of the leaves from all plants in each treatment were harvested, counted, and weighed. The results showed staggered 18 and 24” rows increased yields by 43 and 51%, respectively, over single planted rows for both varieties. Staggered rows incurred higher planting costs, but increased net returns to management. The increase in yield was variety-dependent, thus suggesting that the genetic potential of the varieties needs to be considered when using plant density to increase yields.

  • Establishing a Small-Scale Pastured Poultry Operation in Kentucky

      Abstract: Pastured poultry is poultry rotationally raised on pasture, as opposed to large-scale confinement operations. There has been a growing demand for pastured poultry as a result of the adverse effects of the use of antibiotics in large-scale caged systems and pastured poultry’s attributable nutritional and economic benefits to consumers. As a result, an increasing number of small-scale farmers in Kentucky have begun raising birds both for personal consumption and for supplemental income, in conjunction with other farm enterprises. Poultry is the number one agricultural commodity in Kentucky. Thus, knowledge of how to establish small-scale pastured poultry operations as an alternate or complementary business in Kentucky can be beneficial to potential as well as existing farmers. Beginning producers can develop a plan of operation based on available resources by establishing a budget and nutritional plan, designing appropriate housing, and familiarizing themselves with local, state, and federal policies and regulations

  • A Comparative Analysis of Selected Producer Characteristics and Production
           Practices of Small Livestock Producers in Three Southeastern States of The
           US

      Abstract: It is germane to know the characteristics and practices of small livestock producers in order to assist them; however, there are a paucity of investigations on the subject in the Southeastern US. Thus, this study assessed selected producer characteristics and production practices of small livestock producers in three Southeastern States. The data were collected from three samples of producers in several counties of Alabama, Georgia, and Florida, and were analyzed using descriptive statistics. The results showed that, a majority of producers practiced rotational grazing, had parasite problems, quarantined newly acquired animals, and used veterinary services. Additionally, a majority sold their animals live, and many kept records manually or on a computer. The findings indicate commonalities across the three states, in terms of rotational grazing, parasite problems, quarantine, how animals are sold, and record keeping. There is a need to assist small producers in certain aspects of production practices and in value-added processes

  • Air and Soil Temperature Readings, Growing Degree Days, and Chilling Hours
           Recorded in Two Wiregrass Tunnel Houses Located in East Central Alabama

      Abstract: The study examined air and soil temperature readings, growing degree days, and chilling hours recorded in two Wiregrass tunnel houses during the 2018-2019 season. The monthly average ambient temperature, was 15OF warmer inside the Tunnel House (75/60OF) during the Cool/Cold months, and 17OF warmer inside (90/73OF) during the Warm/Hot seasons of 2018 and 2019. Growing Degree Days heat unit (HU) accumulations were higher inside than outside 4,154 vs. 3,153 HU for the Cool/Cold months and 5,134 vs. 4,800 HU for the Warm/Hot months. Chilling hour accumulations were lower inside the tunnel houses than outside the tunnel houses, 601vs. 671 hr. Utilizing the temperature data from this study, a planting guide consisting of a Cool/Cold (September-February) season and Warm/Hot (March-August) season was developed for a list of crops which producers could plant. The results of this study provides information for growers to better plan their crop choices and planting schedules.

  • Assessing The Success of The 2020 Kansas State Research and Extension
           Summer Research Program: A Virtual Research Experience

      Abstract: Ethnic minorities, and specifically African American students are not participating in graduate programs at the same rate as non-minority students. In 2006, Kansas State University College of Agriculture Diversity Programs Office (DPO) established the Kansas State Research and Extension (KSRE) Summer Research Fellows Program to expose African American and other ethnic minority students to the agricultural sciences graduate research opportunities. Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the 2020 KSRE Summer Research Fellows Program was held virtually to protect the health and safety of participants. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of the virtual program. Data from five 2020 participants were collected using a 5-point Likert scale assessment and analyzed as a case study and by descriptive statistics. As a result of this case study, participants successfully gained knowledge of graduate school and careers in agriculture. Findings will be utilized to further enhance student experience in the program.

  • Openness to Diversity and Challenge: Assessment of Undergraduate Attitudes
           and Experiences in The College of Agriculture at Kansas State University

      Abstract: As society becomes more globally diverse, institutions of higher education have increased diversity programming for student success. Student openness to diversity and challenge has been found to have a large impact on changes in student attitudes, beliefs, and actions in the direction of greater tolerance to individual differences. This study uses regression analysis of survey data to measure (1) openness to diversity, and (2) diversity experience for students enrolled in the College of Agriculture at Kansas State University during the Fall Semester of 2020. Regression results indicate that student openness to diversity and challenge was found to be statistically associated with participation in diversity workshops, diversity class activities, and other personal and academic variables. The major implication of the statistical results is that there is an opportunity to influence student openness to diversity and challenge through enhanced programming for diversity appreciation and understanding as part of the university experience.

  • The Intersectionality of Racism, Globalization, Climate Change, and Forced
           Migration

      Abstract: The purpose of this paper was to contextualize the intersectionality of racism, globalization, climate change, and forced immigration. The paper focuses on conversations from numerous organizations and individuals working to deal with the aforementioned challenges. In addition to highlighting the challenges faced by many immigrants, or would-be immigrants, the paper pinpoints approaches being adopted by community organizations and social movements to end persecution and forced migration. The recommendations put forth by the stakeholders who are engaged in addressing these issues relate to the need for building a policy-relevant agenda and strategy for solving the relevant challenges.   • Legume-Grass Pastures Enhanced the Growth of Yearling Kiko Does

      Abstract: Legumes can be beneficial in increasing pasture productivity and goat performance. This study’s objective was to evaluate the impact of legume-grass pastures on goat performance. A 50:50 mixture of hairy vetch (Vicia villosa Roth) and Marshall ryegrass (Lolium L.) or hairy vetch and rye (Secale L.) was sown on 50% of the research area and 50% with Marshall ryegrass or rye. Forage samples were collected and processed for dry matter. Yearling Kiko does (19) were divided into two groups: legume-grass mix (10 does) and grass only (9 does), both rotationally stocked in their respective plots. Animal live weight, FAMACHA score, and body condition score were collected at the beginning, fortnightly, and at the end of the study.   • Some Fundamentals of Marketing Meat Goats

      Abstract: Over the last couple of decades, the demand for goat meat has risen in the U.S. However, the current supply of domestic goats does not meet the demand. In fact, the increase in demand is the result of the growth in ethnic populations in the U.S. Consequently, small producers are raising goats as a source of income. Thus, they must become familiar with ethnic holidays or festivals, understand marketing, and the importance of body condition scoring and selection criteria in order to increase returns from the sale of their goats. The objectives of this paper were to discuss the U.S. goat inventory, seasonality of demand and carcass specifications, marketing channels for selling goats, body condition scoring, and selection criteria used for grading goats. When producers understand the aforementioned attributes of the market and implement them, they will be able to take advantage of the market; thus, leading to sustainable enterprises.

  • The Importance of Goats in the World

      Abstract: It is a challenge to transform the mindset of subsistence farmers to consider goats as a productive asset. Goat health, breeding, housing and nutrition are the main challenges in a smallholder production system. The development of the goat market sector is informal and underdeveloped. As a result, goats have not been identified as a significant contributor to the national gross domestic product. Many development organizations consider goats a preferred livestock commodity for poverty alleviation. Therefore, it is desirable to have a systematic approach to optimize goat production for smallholders. A smallholder goat value chain works well with a focus on improved goat production, increasing business and entrepreneur skills and organizing communities for strong social capital. Heifer International has large-scale goat value chain programs for smallholders in many countries. Partnership and collaborative efforts among academic/scientific, public/private sectors, producers and civil societies are critical for sustainable smallholder goat development.
