  • From poverty to prosperity through diversity orchard

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Authors: Sanjay Kumar Singh, Vishal Nath, Alemwati Pongener, S D Pandey
Abstract: Orchardists always try to increase their yield and income from fruit crops they raise. Whatever crop they might cultivate, the bottom line is to invariably get a good price from their produce. Farmers can increase their income either by intensifying the existing enterprises or can move towards diversification (by growing new crops, new varieties), value-addition, or successful market linkages to improve their economic level. An excellent example of the strategy is Shri. Anoj Kumar Rai, a physics graduate, vibrant, successful and dynamic orchardist from remote village of Samastipur district of Bihar who was previously cultivating few crops. Now he has diversified his entire orchard with 32 fruit tree species with 115 commercial varieties besides his orchard adored with 33 varieties of mango expanded with at least 5 timber species. Besides providing regular knowledge to its neighbours, his activity is also creating avenues of alternative livelihood for village residents through fruit and varietal diversity, low chill temperate fruits also playing a significant role towards augmenting bountiful income not only for Malikaur village but also for the surrounding areas with curiosity. From the raising almost all fruit crops of the region, he has enhanced income by adopting value addition including harvesting, grading, packaging, processing, nursery husbandry practices himself and do self marketing to enhance his income with economic stability. This overall, is creating a virtuous cycle, which in turn is emboldening the society to attempt newer and more creative products and orchard designs.

  • Arka Neelachal Akshay – A high yielding variety of rose apple

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Authors: Kundan Kishore, V Pandey, Deepa Samant, H S Singh, Vishal Nath, Dinesh Kumar, S Mandal
Abstract: Commercial exploitation of underutilized fruit species is need of the hour for crop diversification as well as increasing fruit basket. In this endeavour, tapping the potential of important minor fruit crops and effective management of their genetic resources seems promising. Rose apple is one of such potential underutilized fruit crops with high market value. However, due to the unavailability of improved variety and quality planting materials, its cultivation is restricted to selected localities and in backyard plantation. Development of a high yielding variety of rose apple (Arka Neelachal Akshay) will be helpful in enhancing the area under cultivation as well as its commercial exploitation through production of quality planting materials by the Centre. Arka Neelachal Akshay has the potential to become viable options for crop diversification due to fruit quality and higher yield. The variety has ability to thrive well in the moisture stress condition and thus can be cultivated in semiarid regions, marginal uplands and problematic soils. Therefore, considering the possible inevitable impact of climate change on production efficiency of major fruits, underutilized fruit crop like rose apple (Arka Neelachal Akshay) may be an economically viable option for the fruit growers in tropical regions.

Authors: Sumit Vashisth, Upinder Sharma, Nidhish Gautam, Sudhir Verma
Abstract: Apple fruit moth cause damage to apple fruit during early to mid stage of fruit development causing considerable losses in yield. The attack by apple fruit moth larvae at early fruit stage is more serious and they sometimes cause complete crop failure by deforming the fruits, rendering them with no economic value. Insecticides applied to the foliage are usually recommended when apple fruit is in initial development stage.

  • A farmer friendly nursery technology for banana

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Authors: Subbaraya Uma, Raju Karthic, Sathiamoorthy Kalpana, Palani Durai, Suthanthiram Backiyarani
Abstract: The demand for planting material can be fulfilled in the farm gate by using this technology. For the reach of the technology at the grass-root level, the State Horticulture Agencies could promote this technology by providing technical know-how and through a subsidization programme to the banana farming community. Monoculture of bananas with a single variety is highly vulnerable to pests and diseases, and hence it is essential to practice multi-clonal cultivation. To promote the multiclonal cultivation of bananas where there is no availability of tissue culture planting material, this technique is a great intervention for sustainable banana production.

  • Pruning in apple trees – Important considerations

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Authors: K L Kumawat, W H Raja, Sajad Un Nabi Raju
Abstract: Pruning is the most important horticultural operation as far as apple production is concerned. Proper pruning not only improves plant shape but also maintains the fruiting area on apple trees. It also aids in the production of a consistently high yield of superior quality fruits. Formative pruning is critical for achieving the ideal shape of the tree and should be performed following the adopted orchard planting system. However, general formative pruning rules should be kept in mind while performing formative pruning. However, fundamental pruning on a bearing tree should be accomplished before moving on to specific pruning. Apple trees should be properly pruned according to the bearing habit of the cultivar. While pruning the apple trees, it is pertinent that growers should have sound knowledge about the bearing habit of cultivar, type of buds, spur, branch collar, the timing of pruning, type of pruning cut, position of pruning cut, the response of pruning cut, pruning tools, etc, so that maximum benefit from this important operation can be harnessed and quality of the product can be maintained to receive the maximum returns.

  • Rhizosphere hybridization: Sustaining citrus production via microbiome
           changes

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Authors: Debashish Hota, A K Srivastava, Vijay Kumar, Anand Sadashiv Kalatippi
Abstract: Rhizosphere security has become a pre-requisite to sustain the production by exploiting the microbiome profile of acid lime, and fortifying with microbes via rhizosphere hybridization is one effective way of deciphering the interaction between plants and microbes. The lost photosynthates from plants through root exudates creates a novel environment to harbour a diverse group of microorganisms, as a result, microbes-mediated rhizosphere exerted a diversified role in physiological plant growth and development. These microbes can be altered through various mean such as microbial fortification, soil amendments through various organic sources, rhizosphere engineering, inoculation of genetically engineered microbes to achieve a biased but desirable rhizosphere for rowth and development of citrus. The biased but desirable changes in plant holobiont will reflect in changes in soil enzymes and plant available nutrients vis-a-vis crop phenology and its horticultural performance in the field. The process of rhizosphere hybridization is purely dependant on the selection of tree species with unique rhizosphere biomass, its activation of growth promoting rhizobacteria and its method of application, which all together makes a unique engineered rhizosphere. However, future studies must be directed towards upscaling the concept to a real field application, with more emphasis on soil-plant health safeguard as continuum.
