  • Addition of unsaturated fatty acids improves digestion of mid lactating
           dairy cows

    • Abstract: The objective of the present experiment was to evaluate the effect of different unsaturated fatty acids supplementation sources on digestive metabolism, including nutrient intake and total tract digestibility, microbial protein synthesis and ruminal fermentation in lactating dairy cows. Twelve Holstein mid lactating cows (580±20 kg of body weight; mean±SD, with average of 128 days in milk, and milk yield of 25 kg/d), were assigned randomly into three 4x4 Latin squares, fed the following diets: 1) control (CO); 2) refined soybean oil (SO); 3) whole raw soybean (WS) and; 4) calcium salts of unsaturated fatty acids (CSFA). Milk yields were 26.6; 26.4; 24.1 and 25.7 for cows fed CO, SO, WS and CSFA, respectively. Cows fed SO, WS and CSFA had lesser intake of DM, OM, CP, EE, TC, NFC and TDN than cows fed CO. Animals fed unsaturated fatty acids supplementation had higher DM and EE digestibility, when compared to cows fed CO. Fatty acids supplementation increased ruminal pH and decreased NH3-N concentrations, when compared to animals fed CO. Daily allantoin excretion, uric acid, milk allantoin, total purine derivatives, absorbed purines, microbial nitrogen, and microbial efficiency did not differ among cows fed different experimental diets. Diets with whole raw soybeans and soybean oil improved digestive metabolism and increased the concentrations of unsaturated fatty acids in milk.

  • Productive performance of simmental dairy cows supplemented with
           ricinoleic acid from castor oil

    • Abstract: The aim of this study was to evaluate the performance and blood parameters of Simmental dairy cows, supplemented with 2 g/day of ricinoleic acid (RA) in diet. Forty Simmental dairy cows in mid lactation, individually housed in stable type tie-stall, were used. The animals were randomly assigned to two treatments: 0 or 2 g of RA/animal/day. The experimental period consisted of 42 days divided into two 21-day. It was observed reduction in dry matter intake (DMI), increased milk, fat and FCM (fat corrected milk) yield, as well as increased of fat content of milk in cows that received RA in diets. No effects were observed for red and white blood cells and blood metabolites.

           protein meal in feed

The study evaluated tambaqui, Colossoma macropomum, performance fed different levels of mango (Mangifera indica) meal in the feed (20, 30, 40 and 50 %) and the reduction of protein levels (38, 33, 28 and 23 %). To this study, 240 fish were used, separated in 12 equal groups, in four treatments and three replications in a randomized system. Initial weight was 5,21; 5,24; 5,19 and 4,99 g respectively. The trial lasted 56 days and fish were periodically weight. Fish were fed daily ad libitum. The following performance parameters were analyzed: specific growth, biomass gain; apparent fed conversion, survival, metabolic profile and digestives enzymes activity. All data show positive polynomial regression for the diet with 50 % mango meal and 23 % protein (R50). Performance parameters had a significant effect with higher results in the groups were mango meal was higher and protein level was lower. Final average weigh was R20: 8,65; R30: 8,81; R40: 8,68 and R50: 11,39 g. From metabolic profile analyzes: glucose, hepatic glycogen, total amino acids and cholesterol it was observed that there are a mobilization from these metabolites in order to keep energy process for tambaqui growth. it was concluded that the best tambaqui performance occured in the diet with 50 % of mango meal inclusion and 23 % of protein. Fish metabolic profile is positively affected by the replacement of protein by mango meal.

           complex

The present work was conducted to evaluate the use of cassava bagasse (BM) in rations with enzyme complex (CE) as supplement for broilers in two phases. Two experiments were conducted to assess the weight gain (GP), feed intake (CR) and feed conversion (CA) in the phases 1-21 and 22-40 days of age, of broilers receiving diets containing 0 and 20 % of BM and, with or without CE. The experiments were conducted in a completely randomized block design with 8 replicates and 20 broiler per experimental unit using a 2x2 factorial arrangement (0 and 20 % of BM, with or without CE). There was no interaction between treatments, inclusion of BM and CE. The inclusion of BM decreased CR and GP in both phases. Whereas the inclusion of CE improved GP and CA at the initial stage did not affect the performance at 22-40 days of age, the cost of feed per kilogram of weight gain was lower and the rates of economic efficiency and cost for both phases was better in animals subjected to diets with 0 % of cassava bagasse inclusion with the enzymatic complex.

  • MiPoB : a simulation program for learning in animal
           breeding

A simulation program has been developed to support the teaching of introductory courses in animal breeding. The program was conceived because the absence of this kind of educational tool aimed at students of first university degree courses, especially in Spanish language. The program simulates a closed animal population of small size in which students should take decisions of choice and mating of future parental. This facilitates the introduction of the basic concepts of selection and genetic evaluation, and also of conservation and population genetics. The program considers the particular case of beef cattle and a total of ten generations of selection can be simulated. Having been tested for two consecutive courses in university formal education, it is available for free use and distribution.

  • Characteristics from wet residue silage of cassava starch with
           different levels of urea added

This study aimed to evaluate the nutritive and microbiological composition and fermentation changes in the residue of wet cassava starch (RWCS) ensiled with different levels of urea. The experimental design was a randomized split plot 4x2, with four levels of urea added in the residue of wet cassava starch (0, 5, 10, 15 and 20 g/kg as fed) allocated to plots, and the sampling positions in the silo (superficial and intermediate) allocated to the subplots. The RWCS was ensiled in air circular concrete silos with approximately 1000 kg of capacity. Urea was added to RWCS between layers at the time of ensiling and the material was kept ensiled for a period of 45 days. After the fermentation period, the silos were opened and samples were collected for the determination of temperature, pH, total nitrogen, ammonia, dry matter, mineral matter, organic matter, crude protein, neutral detergent fiber (NDF), acid detergent fiber (ADF), cellulose, hemicellulose and lignin, and the population of fungi and yeasts, lactic acid bacteria and Clostridium. The urea addition to the level of 20 g/kg as fed silage for the residue of wet cassava starch with approximately 18 % of DM increases the pH, total N, NH3-N, crude protein, NDF and ADF of silage. However, this addition reduce the populations of lactic acid bacteria, fungi, yeasts and the total population of microorganisms without altering the content of dry matter, hemicellulose, cellulose and lignin.

  • Spatial characterization of beekeeping in the micro region of Campos do

This study aimed to generate a database related to the spatial distribution of hives and productivity of regional producers, through the Geographic Information System (GIS) using the Global Positioning System. To build the database of geographical information (GIS) software for processing of geo-referenced information was used. The microregion (4 municipalities and 54 beekeepers) shows concentrations (pockets) of beekeepers and hives in certain locations. Further studies are needed on the characteristics of the local flora for bees to infer about possible saturation of floral resources, since no differences were observed between honey production in apiaries isolated or inserted into the pockets. The GIS proved to be an efficient tool for monitoring the location and origin of regional production, and for planning the distribution of hives and apiaries and so, contribute to a better use of flora and improvement of productivity of the apiaries.

  • Impairment of ram sperm-hyaluronan binding ability by the freezing
           extender

    • Abstract: The ability of ram sperm to bind to hyaluronan coated slides (HBS, %) was tested on fresh (FS) and chilled semen (CS) diluted with skimmed-milk based extender (CS-SM), chilled (CS-EY) and frozen-thawed (FTS-EY) semen diluted with tris-glycerol-egg-yolk based extender. The % of HBS (motile bound sperm/all motile sperm) was similar in FS and CS-SM groups (73,6 % vs. 71,2 %) both significantly higher than CS-EY (25 %) and FTS-EY (29,7 %) groups. Progressive individual motile sperm (IMS) of the FTS-EY group was the lowest (21,7 %), and no differences were found among FS (63,3 %), CS-SM (55 %) and CS-EY (48,3 %). IMS was positively correlated with HBS (r= 0,62; p
