  • Operation of the DC Link in the Conditions of Poor Quality of Grid Power

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: The HVDC link at the Trans-Baikal Converter Complex at the 220 kV Mogocha Substation operates under conditions of poor quality of power in the grid. Distortions in a grid are characterized by values of the negative-sequence voltage unbalance factor and voltage THD that are many times higher than the rated values. The operation of STATCOMs, which are part of the HVDC link, has a beneficial effect on the quality of power across the 220 kV buses of the Mogocha Substation. However, a STATCOM is additionally loaded by negative-sequence currents and higher-harmonic currents. A mathematical model was developed and calculations were carried out for various modes of operation to estimate the available power output of the HVDC link in conditions of poor quality of grid power.

  • Inverters for Technological Development of Russia’s Energy Sector
           and Industry

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: The article discusses the main directions of the development of converter equipment in Russia and worldwide. Major global trends in the development of converter equipment are assessed through the scope of priorities for technological development of the Russia’s energy sector. The main areas of application are analysed and the local inverter market is investigated, specifically in electric transport, solar and wind power generation, distributed smart power systems, including energy storage systems. Inverters are decomposed in minute detail, specifically in terms of the critical technologies and an electronic component base that need to be developed in Russia. Creation of advanced modules for inverters in Russia is exemplified with an ongoing project of developing and establishing a production of specialized IGBT modules in MIDA body. Certain suggestions as to development of production of converter equipment in Russia through the cooperation of the state and the private sector are made.

  • Operation of Current Protection for the Zero Sequence of Overhead Electric
Power Transmission Lines Taking the Circuit for Ice Melting on its
           Lightning-Protection Cables into Account

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Brief information is provided on circuits for melting of ice on the lightning protection cables of overhead power transmission lines (OHL) and on the choice of arrangements for the last stage of zero-sequence current protection (ZSCP) on OHL. The operating parameters of circuits for the melting of ice on lightning protection cables of a specific 500 kV OHL are calculated: “cable – ground,” “two cables – ground,” and “cable – ground, with a second grounded cable.” An experiment was conducted on this 500 kV OHL to measure the operating regime parameters during melting of ice on its lightning protection cable in a “cable – ground” circuit, with the possibility of excessive operation of stage IV of the directed ZSCP for this 500 kV OHL taken into account. Measures are proposed for prevention of excessive operation of the last stage of the ZSCP during melting on the lightning protection cables of this 500 kV OHL.

  • Validation of Numerical Calculations of Electromechanical Transient
Processes When Assessing the Stability of Electric Power Systems Using
           Renewable Energy Sources

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: The widespread introduction of renewable energy sources (RES) into modern electric power systems (EPS) significantly changes their dynamic properties. EPS stability issues arise due to the properties of non-synchronous generating units (GU) based on RES with power converters (PC), which are fundamentally different from conventional synchronous generation. Mathematical modeling of EPS stability issues is currently performed by purely numerical calculation of electromechanical transients in which various simplifications and limitations are applied based on the development and modification “generic” mathematical models of EPS-based GUs with PCs. In the present study, stability calculations of EPS with GU based on RES with PC reveal the impact of the applied simplifications and constraints in the purely numerical calculation of electromechanical transients on the quality of the solution of problems of stability evaluation of EPS with RES. Areas of application of the modified GU model based on RES with PC as part of the EPS model of real dimensionality are identified at which the largest and smallest errors occur, along with their causes. Such “all-mode” verification becomes feasible due to the alternative approach proposed in the article, which is based on the use of a model benchmark instead of field data.
