  • Increasing the Efficiency of Electric Precipitators for Thermal Power
           Plants by Improving Collecting Electrodes

      Abstract: The efficiency of electrostatic precipitators at thermal power plants can be enhanced by increasing their active volume by increasing the height of the electrode systems to 15 – 18 m. However, when increasing height, deviations in the flatness of the surface of the collecting electrode are enlarged up to 22.5 mm, leading to an increase in emissions up to 3 times or more. Experiments were carried out to establish the causes of deviations in the electrodes of domestic electrostatic precipitators to include the technology of profiling the collecting electrode elements, the method of assembling the elements together in height, the symmetry of the element cross-section relative to the center of gravity, as well as the method of fastening between the elements and the shaking beam. Based on an analysis of factors affecting the flatness of collecting electrodes, as well as bench and industrial testing, a collecting electrode having minimal surface deviations from the plane was developed. As a result of the industrial application of the collecting electrode created using an innovative manufacturing technology, including profiling of the collecting electrode elements and assembling them into the electrode, the efficiency of the electrostatic precipitator was increased.

  • Field Tests of a Traveling Wave Fault Location Service for Overhead
           Transmission Lines

      Abstract: Results are presented for a system test of the traveling wave fault location system (TWFLS) on overhead power transmission lines (OPTL), which was developed jointly by JSC ENIN, Relematika LLC, and JSC R&D Center FGC EÉS. On the combined model, containing a mathematical model of an electric power system and a test station, dynamically transforming the calculated voltages into analog form, tests were conducted on the TOR 300 LOK 550 for different types of faults to various points on circuits 1 and 2 of the 330 kV Vostochnaya – Vyborg (L-416 and L-421) and 330 kV Vyborg – Kamennogorsk OPTL (L-474) of the branch of PJSC Rosseti FGC EÉS of MPN Northwest, selected as pilot projects for implementation of TWFLS. The measurement error of the distance to the fault location that was obtained is presented, and factors influencing it are examined.

  • Improvement of the Technique for Seismic Analysis in the Soil-Structure
           System of an Arched-Gravity Dam

      Abstract: A technique that allows reliably modelling the non-reflecting properties of the boundaries of a finite element model is considered. The indicated technique has been tested on the example of a large arched-gravity concrete hydroelectric power plant. At that, the experience of VNIIG experts was used in modelling non-reflecting boundaries, determining the dynamic loads and dynamic properties, such as damping, and elastic properties of the soil-structure system. In addition, advanced techniques for modelling non-reflecting boundaries were tested and the results were compared with the techniques previously implemented at VNIIG.

      Abstract: In this study, data of dipole electric sounding of the earth’s crust in the area of the high-altitude dam of the Chirkey Hydropower Plant (HPP) are analyzed to identify “hidden” tectonic faults in the region. It is recommended to conduct monitoring investigations using the dipole sounding method, to identify geodynamically active fault zones, while selecting a dam construction site.

  • Analysis of Raw Water Heating Regimes in Built-In Condenser Bundles of a
           Cogeneration Turbine Plant Based on Operational Data

      Abstract: Organizing raw (make-up) water in the condensers of cogeneration turbine plants with the simultaneous supply of circulating water through the main bundles is one of the most reliable ways to increase the efficiency of a combined heat and power plant (CHPP). At most CHPPs, the temperature of raw water supplied to the chemical water treatment workshop should not exceed 30°C-40°C. This condition is not always met, and it is necessary to analyze and adjust the operating modes of turbines to provide the most effective heating of water in the built-in bundles. Such an analysis can be performed based on operational data and a mathematical model of the condenser developed at the Department of Heat Engineering and Hydraulics of the Virginia State Univeristy. This paper presents an analysis algorithm based on the actual data obtained during the tests of the condenser of the PT-80-130 turbine plant in the mode of its operation according to the electrical schedule, and conclusions are drawn based on the analysis.

      Abstract: A pattern in the reliability of the behavior of high-voltage electrical transmission lines exposed to solar flares and magnetic storms which we have found previously is confirmed. A strong dependence of the damage and emergencies in power transformers on the intensity, frequency, and other parameters of magnetic storms is demonstrated.

  • The Effect of Shafting Oscillations in the Turbo Unit on the Accuracy of
           Rotation Frequency Measurement

      Abstract: An analysis of the influence produced by torsional and bending oscillations of a shaft assembly on the accuracy of measuring rotation frequency is presented. Based on the obtained data about the level of fluctuations in the frequency measurement cross-section, an assessment was made concerning possible changes in the values of the measured frequency in various operational modes of a turbine unit. The dependences of frequency change on the damping and phase shift of oscillations are obtained. A reduction in the effect of torsional oscillations on the accuracy of frequency measurement can be achieved by selecting the location of frequency measurement in the nodal point zone of natural modes—in particular, in the span between the generator and turbine bearings.

  • Quantitative Assessment of the Operational Reliability of Overhead Power
           Transmission Lines

      Abstract: The urgency of the development of a methodology for evaluating the operational reliability of overhead power transmission lines in electrical power systems is brought about by the increase in the number and expanse of the EPS power lines with service life exceeding the standard.. The lack of a methodology is explained by the unusual requirements for calculating the reliability indexes. It is essential to calculate the quantitative assessment of reliability from statistical data only for an operational, i.e., rather small, space of time. All data preceding this interval cannot be used, as characterizing the object in the “past”. The month of the year, in particular, is taken as the operational interval, because the cost efficiency of an operation is traditionally calculated at this interval also. Now, overall performance is understood as a set of three properties: profitability, reliability, and safety. This transformation of the concept of effectiveness is also caused by the consequences of the aging of objects of the EPS. The recommended new methods of calculating the mean monthly estimates of reliability indexes, and comparisons of these estimates, recognizing the appropriateness of classification of statistical data, make it possible to make decisions that provide reliable, safe, and profitable operation of an overhead power transmission line. Difficulties in the development of the methodology for estimating operational reliability were overcome by means of accounting for the multi-dimensional nature of the statistical data, using the fiducial approach for an estimate of the appropriateness of classification of information, and conducting simulation modeling of representative samples.

  • Hybrid Simulation of Hydrodynamics of Hydroelectric Power Plant Spillway
           Structures

      Abstract: The results of applying a three-dimensional numerical model of a viscous liquid to the problem of calculating the parameters of surface spillways are presented. The model takes into account the pressure distribution profile over the flow depth, which is different from the hydrostatic one. The k – ε-model of turbulence is used to close the equations of hydrodynamics. Vertical flow sampling is performed using an adaptive multilayer mesh. The main attention is paid to the verification of the numerical model on the available analytical solution and on the results of physical experiments. It has been established that the numerical model reproduces well the discharge capacity of surface spillways and the conditions of the pools interface. Agood consistency of the pressure profiles on the spillway face obtained in the physical experiment and on the numerical model, as well as the flow parameters that determine the conditions of the hydraulic jump flooding, is shown using the example of the Zhiguli HPP spillway.

      Abstract: Methods of identification of higher harmonics against the dominant harmonic noise at the network frequency changing over a wide range are considered. Recommendations on selecting the parameters for adaptive structural models for use in single-phase-to-ground fault protection are formulated. The digital current signal of the Kazan CHP-2 is used as an example to demonstrate the performance of the methods for assessing the levels of higher harmonics against the dominant fundamental harmonic when the network frequency deviates from the rating.

  • Inter-Turn Short Circuit Detection in a Stator Induction Motor Using an
           External Axial Flux Sensor

      Abstract: A technique for detecting inter-turn short circuits in the stator windings of induction motors (IM) using axial magnetic flux as a diagnostic parameter is presented. Fault detection is based on an analysis of the EMF signatures induced by axial flux in a sensing coil located on the motor housing and obtained by means of a fast Fourier transform (FFT). The effectiveness of this method is confirmed by experimental results.
