  Abstract: Zusammenfassung Die nervöse Steuerung der Atmung umfaßt die für das Zustandekommen einer normalen Atmung unentbehrlichen nervösen Mechanismen. Diese lassen sich auf wenige fundamentale Prozesse zurückführen, die teils zentral-interneuronaler, teils peripher-reflektorischer Natur sind. Es wurde versucht, an Hand des in der Literatur vorliegenden experimentellen Tatsachenmaterials das zusammenzustellen, was in unvoreingenommener Weise und ohne Zuhilfenahme unbegründeter Hypothesen über Ursprung, Koordination und unmittelbare Kontrolle der Atmungsmotorik ausgesagt werden kann. Die mittelbare Kontrolle der Atmungsmotorik, wie sie einerseits in der fremd-reflektorischen Beeinflussung exteroceptiver und nociceptiver Natur, andererseits im Eingreifen höherer, diencephaler und corticaler Zentren zum Ausdruck kommt, geht über die Steuerung der Atmung im engeren Sinne hinaus und wurde im vorliegenden Zusammenhang nur dort berührt, wo bisher keine prinzipielle Trennung zwischen “Selbststeuerung” und “Fremdsteuerung” gemacht wurde, nämlich beim Übergang vom schwachen inspiratorischen Effekt der Lungenentblähung zum starken inspiratorischen Effekt des Lungenkollapses. Zur nervösen Steuerung sensu strictiore wäre aber auch die nervöse Komponente der chemischen Steuerung der Atmung, d. h. die Beeinflussung der Atmungsinnervation von seiten der spezifischen Chemoreceptoren sinualen und cardio-aortalen Ursprungs zu rechnen. Doch erscheint es wohl richtig und zweckmäßig, diese nervöse Komponente in den hier der ganzen Betrachtung vorangestellten und zugrunde gelegten Begriff der Autonomie der Atmung miteinzubeziehen, und zwar dort, wo davon die Rede war, daß die autonome Aktivität des bulbären inspiratorischen Zentrums letzten Endes auf die Autonomie eines vegetativen Grundsubstrates zu beziehen ist.
