    • Authors: Piret Vacht, Tiiu Koff, Bianka Plüschke-Altof, Anni Müüripeal

    • Authors: Helen Sooväli-Sepping, Bianka Plüschke-Altof

  • Distribution and development conditions of karst phenomena in Estonia

    • Authors: Oliver Koit
Abstract: Nearly half of Estonia’s territory is underlain by Silurian and Ordovician carbonate rocks, which host extensive shallow karstified aquifers that contribute nearly a third of the annually abstracted domestic groundwater. Due to glacial erosions, the short duration of the post-glacial evolution of the territory and for other reasons, karst topography has generally modest dimensions in Estonia. Despite of the relative youth of the majority of the karst formations, karstification is widespread and affects a large fraction of the population daily mostly by means of shallow groundwater quality. Moreover, Estonian karst, with its peculiarities, offers a rare glimpse into the (re)initiation phase of karst in intensively eroded topography, which can still surprise with occasional remnants from the previous times. In this paper a brief overview of the distribution and development of Estonian karst are presented.

  • Estonia’s water bodies, between originalities and limits to qualify
           its limnic territories

    • Authors: Pascal Bartout
Abstract: The five contributions presented in this issue provided an overview of the types of contemporary research in limnology, but they were not in any way intended to make it a comprehensive state. However, they have highlighted a number of environmental dynamics of this other “lake Country” to use J. Terasmaa’s expression and we will focus on putting them in perspective to answer questions posed when this part was introduced. To do this, we will show the double originality of the Estonian limnic territories, but at the same time highlight a double limit to the invocation of this originality. The first originality lies in the composition of the limnic corpus as demonstrated by J. Terasmaa through the analysis of the most exhaustive inventory of Estonian water bodies. Unlike all scientific productions dealing with Scandinavian or Baltic water bodies with the notable exception of the work of Kuusisto and Raatikainen (1988) in Finland, it would seem that almost half of the Estonian corpus is ...

  • Lake Peipsi as a biggest transboundary lake in Europe

    • Authors: Galina Kapanen
Abstract: Lake Peipsi sensu lato (s.l.) (Chudskoe or Chudsko-Pskovskoe in Russian) (3555 km2) is the biggest international lake in Europe and the fourth largest lake in Europe after the Ladoga, the Onega, and the Vänern with respect to surface area and is located in the Baltic Sea water basin. Three states share its water basin – the Russian Federation 59%, Estonia 34% and Latvia 7% of the basin area. The formation and distribution of the structural types of bottom deposits of Lake Peipsi is determined by hydro-meteorological (waves, currents, seasonal water-level fluctuations, lake ice impacts) as well as by the local geologic and geomorphologic factors like the topography and coastal morphology. The central part of the Lake Peipsi s.s. is 9–11 m deep; the coastal zone is shallow and the rather monotonous floor descends for some kilometres in the eastern and western coasts. The main land cover of the Lake Peipsi catchment is forest (50–70%) and agricultural lands (~30%). The water quality of...

  • Lake Chudsk (Peipus) and limnological research in Imperial Russia

    • Authors: Laurent Touchart, Quentin Choffel, Olga Motchalova, Alice Ray
Abstract: At the beginning of limnology, Lake Chudsk was entirely included in the Russian Empire. The first research answered the need to better understand and preserve fishery resources. Karl von Baer initiated the project in the 1850s. In the same years, research was carried out on the entire lake and its outfall, the Narva, in order to channel its energy while lowering the lake water level and then take advantage of its energetic potential. In the 1860s, the geologist Gregor von Helmersen wrote the first complete monograph of Lake Chudsk, but it was not until the 1895 campaign led by the geographer Joseph Spindler that the first bathymetric map of the lake was produced and the isothermal pattern of the temperature at all depths were plotted. Before Estonia became independent at the end of the First World War, most of the limnologists working on Lakes Chudsk and Pskov were German-Baltic scientists of Russian citizenship, favoring the encounter of several scientific cultures.
