  • Optimisation of Vacuum Distillation Units in Oil Refineries Using
           Surrogate Models

      Abstract: Abstract To ensure the optimum performance of downstream processes in a petrochemical refinery, the operation of a vacuum distillation unit (VDU) is critical. It needs to satisfy the yield and quality requirements of the downstream process. Otherwise, it will result in a loss of profitability in the refinery. Hence, it is important to optimise the operation of the VDU to ensure optimum performance. Traditionally, VDU is operated within the design envelope, and its operation condition is fine-tuned based on the operator’s experience. However, such action does not guarantee the optimum performance of the entire refinery as it only considers the operation of VDU without understanding the effects towards downstream processes. Therefore, this work presents a framework to optimise VDU operations with consideration of the downstream processes. The framework consists of process simulation, surrogate modelling, and multi-objective optimisation. The developed framework aims to determine trade-offs between high vacuum gas oil (HVGO) yield and total annualised cost (TAC) of a refinery that considers the needs of downstream operations. In this work, crude oil blending ratio, furnace outlet temperature, flash zone temperature, column top pressure, column bottom pressure, stripping steam flowrate, HVGO pump-around flowrate, and light vacuum gas oil (LVGO) pump-around flowrate of the VDU are to be optimised. Based on the optimised result, the heavy-light crude blend achieves higher HVGO yield and lower TAC, and the optimised results were validated with the simulation results via Aspen HYSYS. The proposed methodology was proven to have accurate estimations of the VDU operation in the process simulation environment. Moreover, the optimised results can provide insight into the optimal process conditions of VDU for the refiners. With this insight, effective operating strategies can be developed to overcome the limitations present in real VDU operations.

  • Shapley-Shubik Agents Within Superstructure-Based Recycling Model:
           Circular Economy Approaches for Fish Waste Eco-Industrial Park

      Abstract: Abstract The tremendous production of fish has resulted in an increased fish waste generation, which ultimately led to the current triple planetary crises on climate, biodiversity, and pollution. In this study, a Fish Waste-based Eco-Industrial Park (FWEIP) model is developed in an attempt to convert the linear economy in existing fish waste management into a circular economy model. Process Graph (P-graph) is used for combinatorial optimization to synthesize optimal FWEIP with the consideration of economic and environmental aspects. The model favors the production of biofuel using the gasification process (Rank 1) with a promising economic benefit of $2.28 million/y without proposing circular synergy within the FWEIP ecosystem. On the other hand, suboptimal solutions—suboptimal 1 (black soldier fly (BSF)) and suboptimal 2 (pyrolysis and gasification) solutions—exhibit gross profit of 17.98% and 24.12% lower than that of the optimal solution. Both suboptimal solutions offer greater circularity with self-sustaining resources (e.g., fish feed, chitosan, and energy). The sensitivity analysis indicates the potential debottlenecking of suboptimal 2 with the use of a catalyst to improve the conversion of bio-oil in the pyrolysis pathway and exhibits a gross profit of 22.54% higher than that of the optimal solution. Following the Shapley-Shubik power index analysis, the hydroponics facility is identified as the pivotal player for both optimal and suboptimal 2 cases with the exception of suboptimal 1 indicating both BSF and hydroponics as a pivotal player. In brief, this research provides the fish waste-based industry with insights and strategies for the implementation of a circular economy as a step toward sustainable development.

  • Developing a New Model for Ecological Capability Evaluation of Irrigated
           Agriculture Using GIS in Sepidan Township, Iran

      Abstract: Abstract Agricultural planning is a critical task that requires assessing numerous factors ranging from soil and terrain to socioeconomic markets and infrastructure. Assessing the ecological suitability of land for agricultural cultivation is a complicated procedure. It needs special environmental data and the knowledge of GIS experts to process and evaluate them. To improve the planning and management of irrigated lands, the present study aims to establish a model for the evaluation of ecological capability using a geometric mean approach. The proposed model was tested against several established methods, including the model of Iranian Ecology using Boolean logic, the weighted linear combination (WLC) technique, and the arithmetic average, using the normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI). Results showed the proposed model, calibrated with the geometric mean, was the most accurate (overall accuracy = 71% and kappa coefficient = 0.54) among the methods tested. In contrast, the Iranian ecological model (overall accuracy = 37.5% and kappa coefficient = 0.17) and the arithmetical mean approach (overall accuracy = 57.44% and kappa coefficient = 0.02) showed the least accuracy. The use of geometric mean assessment provides a high degree of flexibility in the identification of areas of agricultural use. Due to its simplicity and high accuracy, this model can serve as a framework for the assessment of ecological capability in other similar regions. In summary, this research highlights the importance of utilizing advanced models and technologies to enhance agricultural planning and management, ultimately leading to better crop production and a sustainable future.

  • Algebraic and Automated Targeting Techniques Based on Marginal Abatement
           Cost for Carbon Dioxide Removal

      Abstract: Abstract Negative emission technologies (NETs) have now become necessary in global decarbonization strategies, particularly, in reaching net-zero emissions. The marginal abatement cost (MAC) curve that graphs decarbonization strategies according to increasing cost-effectiveness has been used in net-zero emissions planning using NETs. However, the net-zero emissions targeting and the calculation of the total system cost are done manually in the graphical approach, which is cumbersome and inaccurate. To address these limitations, this work presents two alternative approaches based on MAC curves in net-zero emissions planning. The first approach is net-zero emissions planning by algebraic targeting (NEPAT). NEPAT involves the use of a cascade table to determine the negative emissions deficit, which is then followed by technology capacity adjustments to reach net-zero emissions. Although NEPAT improves the laboriousness and inaccuracy issues of the graphical technique in calculating the total system cost, targeting and optimization are done repeatedly and manually. To further improve the algebraic approach, the automated marginal abatement cost (AMAC) model is proposed, where mathematical programming is used to automatically target net-zero emissions based on user-defined objective functions and constraints. Both approaches enable the automatic calculation of costs, which is a limitation of the traditional MAC curve. The two approaches are demonstrated in a system of CO2-emitting sources and NETs. NEPAT has the advantage of increased interactivity with the model, while the AMAC has the advantage of optimization and ease of use. Both techniques contribute to decarbonization planning to reach net-zero emissions.

  • Water Stress Reduction Using Superstructure-Based Mathematical Model:
           Synthesise a Wastewater Treatment Plant Associated with Nutrient Recovery
           for Palm Oil Industry

      Abstract: Abstract Water stress is one of the major risks from climate change. Despite the extensive issue, improper treatment of wastewater further aggravates the issue of water stress. The agriculture sector is one of the major contributors towards water pollution. The nutrients such as nitrogen and phosphorus may flow into surrounding rivers and lakes and runoff from farming land may pollute groundwater, which affects food security, human health, aquatic ecosystems and water quality. Instead of disposal, the nutrients could be recovered from wastewater and turned into profits. Wastewater treatment is a vital process to treat wastewater produced in order to comply with stringent discharge limit. Nonetheless, designing a well-established WWTP is not easy. Previously WWT technologies are chosen from various wastewater treatment (WWT) technologies according to uncertain assumptions, knowledge or past experience of specialists. This method of choosing has the probability to cause significant loss of investment. Furthermore, recently, the practice in the industries has a paradigm change where sustainability of the process is becoming one of the focus. Thus, elements such as operating cost and carbon emission of each technology selected have to be considered when synthesising WWTP. Palm oil mill effluent (POME) contains substantial amount of valuable nutrients that can be recovered to increase the profit of WWTP. Thus, this paper aims to develop a decision-making tool using superstructure-based mathematical modelling for WWTP synthesis along with nutrient recovery technologies taking into consideration economic and environmental factors while comply with discharge limit, at the same time to reduce the risk of water stress. As multi-factors are considered, fuzzy multi-objectives optimisation (FMOO) is employed in the work by bringing together the objectives into a single parameter which is the degree of satisfaction, λ, to generate unbiased solution. A Malaysian oil palm industry case study is exemplified in this study to treat POME for palm oil industries using the developed approach. As a result, the optimal wastewater treatment process with optimum operating cost of RM 588/day, carbon emission of 118 kgCO2 eq/day, and profit of RM137/day gained from nutrient recovery is synthesised.

  • Game Theory–Based Rescue Schemes for Domino Accidents in Industrial
           Parks

      Abstract: Abstract Chemical industrial parks have an overconcentration of major risk sources. The high density of plants and various hazardous chemicals makes it easy for a domino effect to occur, with serious consequences. In this study, the dynamic process of a domino accident was divided into several stages using an incomplete information dynamic game. The transport plan for emergency supplies was determined to achieve the lowest expected cost. This improves the efficiency of emergency supply distribution. To resolve the conflict between rescue time and expected cost in target decision-making, the evolutionary game method was used to analyze the performance of emergencies and decision-makers under different combinations of target behaviors. Multiple plants can achieve an equilibrium state characterized by the average time and lowest cost. This study can serve as a reference for studying dynamic game problems in cases involving multiple rescue schemes. Moreover, it can assist in designing site selection and planning from the viewpoint of inherent safety.

  • Identifying Critical Factors Affecting Human Error Probability in Power
           Plant Operations and Their Sustainability Implications

      Abstract: Abstract Human errors in power plants can have a significant impact on sustainability. Sustainability in the context of power plants involves ensuring the long-term viability of energy generation while simultaneously minimizing adverse environmental, social, and economic impacts. Human errors in the control and operation of power plants can result in energy losses, reducing the overall efficiency of the plant. This research aims to enhance organizational decision-making by identifying and evaluating key factors affecting human error probability (HEP) and their relationships in power plants. The study uses the cross-impact matrix multiplication applied to classification (MICMAC) method to identify key factors, dependencies, and interconnections influencing HEP. By recognizing and understanding these dependencies, managers can make informed decisions and implement appropriate adjustments to organizational conditions and personnel. Based on case study results, six sub-factors are identified as having the highest level of influence on HEP: the operating procedures, skills and experiences of personnel, ergonomics, the interruption of tasks, repetitiveness and simplicity of the task, and education and training plan.   • Power System Sustainability Enhancement Through Capacitor Placement

      Abstract: Abstract Sustainability enhancement is one of the optimization problems in the power system to improve system voltage stability and reduce system loss. Numerous well-known advantages of using capacitors in power systems include raising the maximum flow through cables and transformers, improving the system voltage profile and power factor, and lowering losses as a result of compensating the reactive component of power flow. It is a nonlinear integer optimization problem, with sites and sizes of shunt capacitors being discrete values. The purpose of this problem is to determine the optimum location and size of capacitors to be installed in the power system, including numerous constraints such as topology, load requirements, and operational constraints. From long back, the capacitor placement was found to be widespread approach toward sustainable development of power network. Various optimization methods have been developed to solve this issue which include heuristics, metaheuristics, and mathematical algorithms. Each method has its own opportunities as well as obstacles, and opting an appropriate method depends on the intricacy of the problem and the level of accuracy required. This paper describes the state of art of assorted methods of capacitor placement used in power systems with diversified efforts of researchers found to be altering with every upcoming decade. Analysis of these methods shows that still a huge gap needs to be covered to avail all possible benefits of capacitor placement and advanced research planning is required to develop more efficient and effective procedures of capacitor placement in power network.

  • A Highly Effective Optimization Approach for Managing Reverse Warehouse
           System Capacity Across Diverse Scenarios

      Abstract: Abstract Advanced technologies are gaining more attention in every industry sector. Therefore, to develop a logistics network that can adjust to effectively manage inventories for managing logistics while maximizing profit for all systems involved. The main objective of this research is to calculate the number of products to be dispatched at different intervals within a logistics network, aiming to minimize the overall costs of a reverse warehouse system called an automatic reverse storage system (ARWS). A mathematical model is presented to optimize the total cost and the delay in transporting rankings in a warehouse system network, considering that some scenarios are uncertain with capacity. To address the mathematical approach for both standard and extensive sizes, various meta-heuristics algorithms are utilized within the MATLAB software, and the outcomes are determined with the globally optimal solution to handle better responses to several scenarios to allocate items to shelves and complete orders and routing. The results indicate that the suggested algorithm performs well, with the total quantities sent to the warehouse equal to those derived from the precise solution. Additionally, the value of the objective function decreases with an increase in the number of iterations.

  • Market Potential Assessment Model for Integrated Energy Service: A Case
           Study on New-Type Power System in the Provincial Region of China

      Abstract: Abstract The construction of new-type power system is the basis for achieving China’s dual-carbon goal, and integrated energy service is an important way to ensure the sustainable operation of the new-type power system. At present, the development of integrated energy service in China is still in its infancy, and the primary issue has been how to tap the market’s potential. However, most of the existing studies are from the perspective of energy service providers, and there are few studies on the market potential of integrated energy services, and there is a lack of effective evaluation systems and evaluation methods, which makes it difficult to plan and layout integrated energy services from the macrolevel. Therefore, a comprehensive assessment model for the market potential of integrated energy service at the provincial level in China is proposed in this paper. First, an evaluation index system of provincial integrated energy service market potentials is constructed from four aspects: market scale, economic efficiency, energy efficiency improvement, and environmental protection. Second, the evaluation model is constructed with the entropy weight method and the Technique for Order Preference by Similarity to Ideal Solution (TOPSIS) method. At last, the provincial market potentials of integrated energy service in China are evaluated and analyzed from the perspectives of gaps, strengths, and weaknesses, and policy suggestions are proposed to develop integrated energy service accordingly. The results show that the proposed assessment model of the provincial market potentials of integrated energy service is of practical significance to provide decision-making support for the development of integrated energy service and is conducive to promoting the sustainable development of the power system.

  • Synthesis and Optimisation of an Integrated Renewable Energy and
           Greenhouse Network

      Abstract: Abstract This paper presents a study on the synthesis and optimisation of a renewable energy and resource supply chain network (SCN) to satisfy agricultural greenhouse resource and energy demands. This is motivated by the high costs and emissions to run greenhouses due to the resources and energy required for optimal growth conditions. The investigation aims to contribute to the growing area of research on circular practices in the agricultural sector. The SCN includes biomass from agricultural waste transported to a utility hub, consisting of water and carbon dioxide (CO2) as resource supplies, as well as a boiler and steam turbine-generator and solar photovoltaic (PV), as energy conversion technologies. The resources and energy are distributed to greenhouses. The objectives are to minimise both the total annualised costs (TAC) and environmental impact (EI), calculated as CO2 emissions of the integrated network. Multi-periodicity accounts for the monthly and daily variation in constraints on the system, such as feedstock and solar radiation availability and energy limitations. The model is applied to a case study of an agro-industrial zone in Kwa-Zulu Natal (KZN) province, South Africa. The network meets greenhouse demands at a minimum TAC and EI of 8.052 \(\times {10}^{6}\) R/y and 14,370 tCO2e/y, respectively. The biomass supply chain (BSC) contributes most significantly to the TAC at 43.7% while biomass combustion makes up 99.8% of the EI. Additional key results include bagasse and corn stover being selected as the only feedstocks and rail as the transport mode. The 26,560 MWh/y of electricity supplied to the greenhouses is made up by 71.4% from the boiler and turbine-generator with the remainder from solar PV. The potential of solar PV as a clean and low-cost energy source is demonstrated by the model selection at its full capacity. The study confirms that holistic modelling and optimisation of renewable energy SCNs for greenhouses is necessary to meet a trade-off between the network costs and CO2 emissions.

  • A Multi-objective Mixed-Integer Linear Model for Sustainable Dairy Supply
           Chain with Food Waste and Environmental Pollutants

      Abstract: Abstract This study contributes to dairy supply chain due to the lack of food waste and environmental pollutants. The objective of this study is to minimize the total system cost and reduce carbon emissions and food waste for a dairy supply chain with multi-echelons. The system consists of multiple farmers, single processing plant, multi-distributor, and multi-retail customer. This study presents a multi-objective mixed-integer linear programming (MOMILP). A MOMILP proposed model was validated to provide insights into dairy industries. A real case study of dairy milk problems in West Java (Indonesia) was solved by using optimization software. The optimal results show that applying the proposed model can minimize total costs, reduce food waste, and minimize environmental pollutants. Finally, the results of sensitivity analysis show that the total supply chain costs and food waste costs are significantly influenced by variance of temperature in fresh milk storage.

  • Comparative Analysis of Solar Still Types for Enhanced Freshwater
           Production: a Multi-Criteria Decision Method Approach

      Abstract: Abstract Water scarcity is increasing day by day due to population growth, economic development, and environmental pollution. Solar stills present a promising technical solution for purifying water. However, the problem lies in the appropriate choice of the solar still type for the desalination unit, aiming for high productivity and low cost. The objective of this work is to compare five geometrical types of passive solar stills to determine the most suitable and efficient one for freshwater production. First, five solar still geometries were selected based on a literature review. The comparison of these five technologies was conducted using the multi-criteria decision method (MCDM), specifically the TOPSIS method. To achieve this, six technical and economic sub-criteria were taken into account. The preference weights for these sub-criteria were calculated using entropy as the objective method. The results indicate that the cascade solar still ranks first among the other technologies, with a closeness coefficient CCi value of 0.74, followed by the pyramid solar still with a value of 0.56. These results were validated through sensitivity analysis, with a probability of 67% for the cascade solar still and 33% for the pyramid solar still. This analysis allowed us to select the cascade solar still as an efficient solution for freshwater production when compared to other types.

  • Exploring Factors Affecting Sustainable End-of-Life Vehicle Recycling
           System: a Structural Equation Modeling Approach

      Abstract: Abstract Production of automobiles is continuously on the rise in India. This growth in vehicle production increased the generation of end-of-life vehicles. End-of-life vehicle recycling has become a very serious issue in India from environmental, economic, and sustainability perspectives. Hence, it is vital to identify the factors and explore their impact on a sustainable end-of-life vehicle recycling system. The study aims to analyze the relationship among the factors of a sustainable end-of-life vehicle recycling system. This study identified seven factors and developed a conceptual model based on a literature review. A survey of stakeholders in Maharashtra and Gujarat was conducted from February 2022 to October 2022. For this purpose, a questionnaire was distributed online through a Google form link. Structural equation modeling methodology was used to analyze the data of 150 stakeholders and develop the measurement and structural models. The results show a strong relation between the sustainable end-of-life vehicle recycling system and its factors, except those based on the direct impact of government policies and socio-economic measures. The study will help to improve the stakeholders’ understanding of the important measures that need to be taken to develop a sustainable end-of-life recycling system in India. The study will also aid the policy and decision-makers in designing and implementing policies and procedures related to the end-of-life vehicle recycling industry. The research will also help India contribute significantly to the 17 Sustainable Development Goals drafted by the United Nations for all its member nations or ensure a habitable planet for future generations.

  • Implementation of the Deep Eutectic Solvent, Choline Urea Chloride (1:2),
           to Evaluate the Sustainability of its Application During CO2 Capture

      Abstract: Green chemistry aims to create chemical products and processes that decrease or eradicate the need for harmful substances. By using green solvents like Deep Eutectic Solvents (DES) it is feasible to devise new processes or modify current that adhere to the principles of circular economy and green chemistry. In this work is presented the potential use of choline urea chloride (1:2) as a solvent; taking the post-combustion capture of carbon dioxide (CO2) as a case study. The results demonstrated that the methodology proposed allows the thermodynamic modeling of DES, obtaining a prediction of data very similar to the experimental trends previously reported. In addition, the use of DES in CO2 capture allowed a 13.97% reduction in environmental impact and required 25.38% less energy than the traditional process based on amine absorption. This led to a reduction in global cost by 32.11% and 19.64% for equipment and services, respectively, and a 21.13% lower cost of operation. Graphical

           Integrated Production and Maintenance Planning with Human Error
           Optimization

      Abstract: Abstract Integrated production and maintenance planning optimizes efficiency and productivity by coordinating schedules. Investigating this planning can improve operational efficiency, reduce costs, and enhance productivity. It reduces equipment breakdowns, minimizes downtime and delays, and facilitates better resource allocation, thereby lowering costs and enhancing cash flow. On the other hand, human error can significantly affect maintenance operations, reducing performance. This paper introduces a novel mathematical model aimed at cost minimization through the optimization of preventive maintenance (PM) operation planning, production scheduling, and the consideration of human error. Unlike prior research, this research accounts for the influence of human error on both the reduction coefficient of equipment virtual age and associated costs. Besides, this paper categorizes the costs linked to maintenance operations into two distinct groups. The results help decision-makers implement optimal production and maintenance operations in organizations, taking human error into account. Optimal and integrated maintenance and production planning that takes into account human error can have a significant impact on sustainability in several ways. The model is tested in the real world and validated using the sensitivity analysis method. The results suggest that the optimal human error probability, based on its costs, is equal to 0.00005. This finding encourages decision-makers to identify sources of human error and develop proactive measures to optimize performance. Overall, the model can help organizations optimize production and maintenance operations, reduce costs, and improve performance.

  • Energy and Exergy Transfer Diagrams for Visualising Flows in Process
           Systems

      Abstract: Abstract This paper develops a new Exergy Transfer Diagram (ExTD), as an extension of the Energy Transfer Diagram (ETD), to enable the visualisation of both energy and exergy flows within a processing system. Based on Pinch Analysis, the ETD comprises regions in the temperature-enthalpy plot corresponding to the individual heat transfer operations. The position of each operation on the plot provides significant insight into the possible energy savings via retrofit. The ExTD complements the ETD and expresses the exergy flows, enabling the direct targeting of the minimum exergy input to the system and the component-level contributions to total exergy destruction and loss. The ExTD construction uses a Problem Table-based method to provide robust targets for the total exergy destruction of a system. Both the ETD and ExTD tools are demonstrated using an industrial case study of a milk dryer system. Three different utility structures are analysed using the tool including a conventional steam system, a steam system with cogeneration, and a high-temperature heat pump with a supplementary boiler. The results show that the heat pump option achieves the lowest minimum exergy input (4.5 MWx or 1.62 GJx/t) for the system, which represents a 15% reduction in the exergy requirement of the process and, if powered by low GHG-emissions electricity, could achieve a 90% reduction in fossil fuel use and GHG footprint.

  • Central Composite Design Optimization of the Extraction and
           Transesterification of Tiger Nut Seed Oil to Biodiesel

      Abstract: Abstract There is a high demand for sustainable biofuel to curtail the challenges of environmental pollution and scarcity associated with the limited hydrocarbon-based petrol concentrated in certain parts of the globe. In this research, an extraction operation was carried out to obtain tiger nut oil (TNO) using n-hexane. Gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) techniques and Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy were applied to examine the fatty acid compositions of the bio-oil and subsequent biofuel properties. The interactive effect of significant variables on the extraction and transesterification process was studied. The central composite design result confirmed optimum temperature (55 °C), catalyst weight (3.10 wt%), methanol-to-oil ratio (8:1), and stirring speed (550 rpm) respectively. The output corresponds to 92% biodiesel yield, indicating ± 7.02 standard deviation from the experimental practicable. The kinetic parameters were employed to model a chemical reactor geometry (radius = 3.0 m, reactor length = 9.0 m, mean retention time (MRT) = 3.42, and space-time of 0.30 min) at the optimum conditions. The finding confirmed that the biodiesel properties produced complied with the ASTM-D6751 and EN-141215 specifications, proving to be a reliable feedstock with better fuel properties over TNO-based biodiesel blends (B100, B10, B20, and B30). The research will provide a datum for comparison with other established biodiesel feedstocks and require future investigation in the direction of the vehicular performance level and practicability of the TNO-based feedstock in the internal combustion (IC) engine.

  • A reverse Logistics Inventory Model with Consideration of Carbon Tax
           Policy, Imperfect Production, and Partial Backlogging Under a Sustainable
           Supply Chain

      Abstract: Abstract The awareness of consumers for reused or recycled items and environmentally friendly practices has grown over the past few decades, which has encouraged businesses to integrate sustainability development into their operations. As a result, industry’s supply chains are focusing on product recycling, waste reduction initiatives, and proper disposal of expired products. Sustainable development has benefited a variety of industries, including inventory management; it helps to sustain the environment as well as the economy. In this study, the effect of carbon emission on a reverse logistics inventory model is investigated when manufacturing and remanufacturing with multiple retailers are taken into account. In an effort to minimize the carbon emission, many countries are imposing strict limits on carbon emitters. Carbon tax policy is one of the laws that has been successfully implemented in many countries. In this paper, carbon emissions are released from various supply chain activities like product manufacturing, remanufacturing, storage, waste disposal, transportation, and deterioration. To control the excess release of carbon emission, carbon tax regulation is incorporated. During remanufacturing, due to some error, the machine switches from being “in control” to an “out of control” state and generates some imperfect quantities that are instantly inspected and reworked at some cost. Shortages are permitted with partial backlogging, and backlogging rate is constant. The aim of this study is to determine the optimal total cost under a forwards and backwards supply chain system. The model is demonstrated using several numerical examples, followed by a sensitivity analysis that seeks to investigate the impact of key parameters on the optimal solution. Convexity is depicted graphically, and significant features of the results are discussed to extract some management knowledge. The results indicate that the manufacturing cost, remanufacturing cost, and the rate of remanufacturing have a significant impact on the integrated cost of the inventory system. The obtained results also explain that parameters involved in carbon emission activity produce noticeable changes in the total cost. The findings are very managerial and instructive for organizations and businesses seeking environmentally conscious production systems.

  • Multi-Criteria Decision-Making Tools for Project Selection by
           International Conglomerates

      Abstract: Abstract International conglomerates often take financial risks by investing funds in potential projects without conducting comprehensive assessments of the uncertainties associated with economic and political factors, which contribute to overall international business risks. In this study, an analytic hierarchy process (AHP) based approach has been developed as a practical decision-making tool for project selection in project management. The AHP enables the identification of the most valuable projects among various potential options, ensuring that investors benefit from the proposed advantages outlined in the project business plans. The capital expenditure (CAPEX), operating expenditure (OPEX), environment, social and governance (ESG) and ease of business (EOB) are the criteria selected and organised into a hierarchical framework of the AHP. The projects under each criterion are prioritised by assigning overall weights through pairwise matrix comparisons. To ensure the reliability and consistency of the pairwise comparisons, the eigenvector method is employed to evaluate the consistency of the economic freedom sub-criterion under EOB. Similarly, the AHP is applied to the CAPEX, OPEX and ESG criteria using consistent scoring and rating systems for pairwise comparisons, which enables the determination of their overall weights. Based on the analysis, the relative weightage of each decision criterion has been identified, and the score of each project has been estimated. LNG import and re-gasification terminal in Southwest India is chosen as the project with the greatest potential to fulfil the diverse requirements of the companies. Capital cost contributes the most to this decision because the projects considered in this case are highly capital intensive. At the same time, the overall scores of four projects are comparable, and thus, the final decision selection may also be based on the specific priorities of the investors.
