  • Evaluation of Energy Properties of Lesser Known Native Species; Nataw
           (Xylopia parviflora)

    • Abstract: The most common forms of biomass available in Sri Lanka are fuel wood. Among fuel woods Hevea brasiliensis (rubber) play major role as firewood to fulfill energy requirements. Especially industries demanded by rubber are not enough to meet the demand of fire wood. In this context, traditional users of fuelwood face difficulties in maintaining a stable supply of fuelwood. Therefore, there is an essential need in identifying possible, potential and high efficient biomass energy source to fulfill energy requirement in the country according to country’s energy policy targets. This study was designed to evaluate energy and mechanical properties of Nataw (Xylopia parviflora) to see its applicability as fuel wood in biomass boilers. To study the fuel wood characteristics of Nataw (Xylopia parviflora), individuals were categorized in to three diameter classes dbh class (5cm -15cm, 15cm - 25cm ,25cm - 35cm). In each individual four samples were taken from a wood disk extracted at breast height (1.3m). Moisture content, density, specific gravity, ash content, volatile matter, fixed carbon and biomass/ash ratio were measured from five individuals from each diameter class. Certain characteristics including moisture content, density, specific gravity, and ash content had no significant difference among three dbh classes. Volatile matter content was significantly higher and fixed carbon content was significantly lower than the other two types of dbh classes in 25cm – 35cm diameter class, the largest diameter class. When compare energy characteristics of Xylopia parviflora with Hevea brasiliensis, moisture content (31.22%) ash content (1.24%) were lower than the rubber. However Calorific values (18.92 kJ/g) and FVI (3055) higher than the rubber concluding Xylopia parviflora could perform better than rubber as a fuel wood in biomass boilers. • Evaluation of Farmer’s Woodlots: A Common Agroforestry System Used to
           Establish Forest Plantations

    • Abstract: Farmer’s woodlot is a common agroforestry system used to establish forest plantations while increasing farmer’s income and proper utilization of marginal lands. This study was conducted to evaluate the farmer’s woodlots established in dry and intermediate zones of Sri Lanka. 17 teak plantations were selected from three districts. Three farmer’s woodlots from each plantation were randomly selected for the data collection and 170 farmers were interviewed using a questionnaire survey. dbh and total height were measured for the trees and soil samples were collected to determine organic carbon, nitrates, phosphorus, potassium, magnesium and calcium. Growth of teak in farmer’s woodlots was less than the average growth rates of the yield tables. Soil nutrients were present at very low levels and calcium was detected only in four plantations. Nitrate, potassium and magnesium were significantly different between the selected plantations and only nitrate was significantly correlated with teak growth. All farmers requested to extend the present 25-year land lease agreement to earn more income from teak. Poor site quality, damage caused by wild elephants, fire, insects and pests were common so that both timber growth and the yield of seasonal crops was low. Lack of technical support was also highlighted. Published on 2019-07-01 00:00:00

  • Reviewing Effluent and Estuarine Water Quality in View of Introducing
Effluent Standards for Coastal Aquaculture in Sri Lanka

    • Abstract: Coastal aquaculture commenced in the 1980’s in Sri Lanka with the shrimp farming industry. The major coastal aquaculture activity even at present is shrimp culture. However, it has caused pollution in the coastal areas due to its untreated effluents being discharged to coastal water bodies. Although effluent treatment prior to release is recommended, it is not practiced. The pollution caused by the industry has not only affected the other aquatic organisms, but has affected the industry itself through disease spread. Many countries in the world have recognized shrimp culture as a highly polluting industry, and are taking measures to control pollution. Therefore, it is time that Sri Lanka also introduced methods to control coastal area pollution from aquaculture effluents. The present paper reviews the available water quality in the estuarine systems, and the effluent quality discharged from farms to suggest standards for the aquaculture effluents with a view of reducing the pollution to coastal areas. • Assessment of Soil Erosion in Uma Oya Catchment, Sri Lanka

    • Abstract: Soil erosion is one of the major threats which affects farm productivity and water quality in river catchments. Quantification of human-induced soil loss is an imperative measure in catchment management. Among the catchments in Sri Lanka, the highest sediment yield has been reported from the Upper Uma Oya catchment (UOC) which is a sub-catchment of the Upper Mahaweli catchment. The Mahaweli watershed is the most important watershed in Sri Lanka since the size and the economic importance of it. Hence, this study was conducted considering the ten selected sub-watersheds of Uma Oya Watershed (UOW) in Sri Lanka to quantify soil erosion. Soil erosion of UOW was calculated using Integrated Valuation of Ecosystem Services and Tradeoffs (InVEST) Sediment Delivery Ratio (SDR) model. It was found that the current soil erosion rates in the watershed is varied between 14.0–648.6 t/ha/yr. Results of the study disclose that the soil erosion rates of UOW are 3 to 130 times faster than the soil loss tolerance in Sri Lanka. Findings of the study suggest that the implementation of sustainable watershed management options are crucial in order to reduce soil erosion and to enhance the quality of the watershed. • Spatial and temporal changes of the green cover of Colombo city in Sri
           Lanka from 1956 to 2010

    • Abstract: Colombo city, the commercial capital of Sri Lanka and also a popular tourist destination is currently under a redesigning program coupled with landscaping activities. Therefore it is important to investigate the spatial distribution of the green cover and its change over the time so that the findings can effectively be used to identify priority areas for restoring and revitalizing the greenery of the city. This study was conducted on mapping the green cover in all 47 wards of Colombo city for the years 1956, 1982, 2001 and 2010 by analyzing aerial photographs and IKONOS maps using Geographic Information Systems. Investigations were further extended to identify the vegetation cover% and its change in each ward during the 54 year study period. According to the results, the green cover of Colombo city declined from 35.67% to 22.23% from 1956 to 2010. In 2010, the highest green cover (49.65%) was reported in Narahenpita and only three other wards (Kirillipone, Cinnamon Gardens, and Thimbirigasyaya) had green cover over 30% of the total land extent. In contrast, the green cover was less than 10% for ten wards, i.e., Kochchikade North, Kochchikade South, Grandpas North, Masangasweediya, Panchikawatte, Fort, Gintupitiya, New Bazaar, Maligawatte, and Aluthkade East. Under the current redesigning plans, those ten wards should be given the priority to increase the green cover to re-establish a healthy environment. Expansion of built-up areas and road network can be surmised as major reasons for the gradual reduction of green cover in Colombo city. Published on 2016-07-04 00:00:00

  • Breaking seed dormancy in a forest plant: Grewia
           damine
    Gaertn

    • Abstract: Seeds of Grewia damine are dormant and vegetative propagation is difficult which act as an obstacle for the introduction of this species for commercial or conservation processes. Therefore, the present study was conducted to identify the seed dormancy breaking treatments to improve seed germination of G. damine. The following dormancy breaking treatments were applied: control (intact seeds); scarified seeds with sand paper; hot water treatment (1000C) for 5, 10 and 15 minutes; refrigeration at 2-50C for 1, 2 and 3 weeks; Conc. H2SO4 or HNO3 immersion for 5, 10 and 15 minutes. Germination parameters were measured and the data were subjected to ANOVA in Minitab 15. A significantly high (p < 0.05) germination percentage (93%) and other germination parameters (GS= 13.628, GMT= 4.956, GI= 5.556 and T50%= 5.447) were recorded in the treatment of scarification with a sand paper followed by the treatments with Conc. H2SO4 for 15 minutes and boiling water for 5 minutes where germination was 55 %. While significantly low germination of 22 % was recorded with Conc. HNO3 for 15 minutes. The results suggests that seeds of G. damine possess a physical dormancy. None of the untreated seeds of G. damine germinated within the study period and scarification with a sand paper proved to be the most effective method of breaking seed dormancy. Hence seeds could be used by the nurserymen after breaking dormancy to produce plant material at large scale. Published on 2016-07-04 00:00:00

  • Anthropogenic impacts on vegetation diversity and spatial floral
composition of the swamp forest associated with the tropical river basin

    • Abstract: The Gin river wetland marsh has been identified as one of the most dynamic ecosystem in Sri Lanka, providing habitats for associated floral and faunal communities under a permanent or temporary accumulation of water. Study was focused to understand the structure, composition and threats of the Ginthota wetland marsh, by identifying the biodiversity distribution, anthropogenic activities and evaluation of water quality changes. Vegetation was sampled in randomized plots and water samples were collected in the three sampling locations. Fifty seven species of plants of twenty three different families were identified. Out of them, forty eight species were native and five were introduced. Argyreia populifolia was identified as an endemic species. Three plants were identified as dominant plant species Sonneratia caseolaris, Annona glabra and Acrosricum auriyam. Annona glabra was an invasive species and Nypa fruticans was an endangered species. The Shannon-Wener Index for the disturbed and undisturbed areas was 0.685 and 1.721 respectively, reflecting a higher biodiversity in the undisturbed areas. Many anthropogenic factors are causes for the deteriorating diversity and also water quality. Published on 2016-07-04 00:00:00

  • A Study on competition between Hydrilla verticillata and Mayaca
           fluviatilis

    • Abstract: Mayaca fluviatilis is an exotic ornamental aquatic introduced to the country via the ornamental aquatic plant industry. The plant is now identified as a potential invasive in the country. The plant morphologically resembles Hydrilla verticillata and, a native aquatic while growing submerged in the water. Hydrilla verticillata has been recorded for its invasive behavior in the Western Province of Sri Lanka while M. fluviatilis is still at its early stages of spread with restricted distribution. Therefore information on M. fluviatilis is lacking as it has only been recently recognized as a problematic plant. The present study was conducted with the objective of evaluating inter-specific competition between M. fluviatillis and H. verticillata. A competition experiment was designed with five treatment combinations viz. terminal shoots of M. fluviatilis only (control), terminal shoots of H. verticillata only (control) and different combinations of M. fluviatilis and H. verticillata. The experimental plots were arranged in Completely Randomized Design and plant growth parameters were recorded after eight weeks of planting. Data were analyzed by using Minitab statistical software (version 16). With the introduction of H. verticillata, all the growth parameters of M. fluviatilis were reduced of which, shoot number root number and root dry weight were significantly (p<0.05)reduced. On the other hand, with the introduction of M. fluviatilis, all the growth parameters of H. verticillata were increased of which, length of newly formed shoots, shoot dry weight and shoot number were significantly (p<0.05) increased. Therefore, due to the competition, with the introduction of M. fluviatilis, the growth performances of H. verticillata were increased. Based on the present study, in a situation where H. verticillata and both species coexist, H. verticillata will have a competitive advantage over M. fluviatilis. Hence, the result suggest that despite the similar ecology, H. verticillata may outcompete M. fluviatilis in many situations. Published on 2016-07-04 00:00:00

  • Factors affecting demand for compost: a case study in Kurunegala

    • Abstract: Composting, as widely believed, is a solution to the ever-increasing solid waste management problem around the world. Most countries convert urban solid waste into compost because of its expected use in productive agriculture. With rising urban waste around the country, the production of compost will also rise in times to come. However, the success of management of solid waste through composting entirely depend on the usage of compost by the farming community, because without demand for such compost, it is not possible to dispose the production. Therefore, this research attempt to analyze the demand for compost by collecting primary data from 100 farmers around Kurunegala area. The data collection method in this study was face-to-face interviews using a pre-tested questionnaire. Several focus groups (N=3) aided the development of questions in the questionnaire. A Multiple Linear Regression was estimated by associating six factors to the amount of compost used by farmers in the area. Regression results shows that income, land extent, sand content, price, and the cultivation type have significant impact on demand. While all other variables showed a positive effect on demand, price and sand content (low quality) showed a negative impact. Results highlighted that for composting to be a viable solution in managing urban solid wastes, a proper marketing campaign is in order by using the four Ps of marketing, the Product, Price, Place, and the Promotion, in a ‘right’ mix.
