  • A Floristic Quality Assessment Methodology for Citizen Science

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: The Floristic Quality Assessment (FQA) is a widely accepted method of gauging the health of native plant communities in a natural habitat. Rather than relying on a qualitative, subjective judgement on the health of a habitat, FQA derives a quantitative, standardized, objective metric, called the Floristic Quality Index (FQI) (Swink and Wilhelm 1979, 1994) to grade the quality of plant life, allowing for measurable results. It does so by assigning a numerical coefficient of conservatism (CoC), to each plant species within an ecological zone, based upon a plant species' fidelity to that zone, and then combining conservatism coefficient values (C) of all species with species richness at a given assessment site.My ... • Up Smith Creek without a Paddle: A Case Study on the Barriers to Stream
           Restoration Assessment

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Riparian zones are uniquely diverse and play vital roles in landscape planning and aquatic systems restoration (Naiman et al. 1993, Naiman et al. 1997). In this case study, we focus on the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia, an area with a history of agricultural land use which has resulted in the degradation of the Chesapeake Bay Watershed. Stream impairment is a widespread issue and as a result the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) Farm Service Agency's (FSA) Conservation Reserve Program (CRP) began incentivizing the protection or restoration of natural habitat on agricultural land in 1985 (USDA FSA 2019, USDA 2020, USDA FSA 2021a, USDA FSA 2021b, VA DCR 2021). In 1998, the FSA created the Conservation ... Read More

  • Observations of Nocturnal Upland Habitat Use by the Rana Draytonii
(California Red-Legged Frog), and Implications for Restoration and Other
           Activities

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Rana draytonii (California red-legged frog), listed as a threatened species in 1996 by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS), is an example of a declining wildlife species for which many pieces of its natural history are still being assembled (Jennings and Hayes 1994, USFWS 2002, Lannoo 2005). This paucity of information is surprising given the considerable attention the species has received from researchers. In particular, upland habitat use has been studied using radio-telemetry (Rathbun and Murphey 1996, Bulger et al. 2003, Fellers and Kleeman 2007, Tatarian 2008) and through direct observation (Alvarez 2004, Surber 2019, Alvarez et al. 2021). Nevertheless, numerous aspects of the use of upland habitat by ... Read More

  • Deadwood, Take a Bow

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: "Come to me," says the site, "Design a habitat, buy plants, restore my ecological structure and function, and let me develop." We have heard this song many times and it is the soundtrack for our actions. But we rarely hear, "Find deadwood and scattered it on the ground." The siren's call is incomplete.A long series of studies has shown that deadwood, standing or fallen (coarse woody debris = "CWD" in academic circles), is integral to habitats' long-term health. Our culture commonly uses the phrase "dead wood" as a metaphor for uselessness, for stagnation where there once was vitality. In restoration ecology, a different stance is more appropriate as we have learned the many critical roles that deadwood plays to ... Read More

  • Revegetation of Coastal Dunes: Which Species to Choose'

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Restoration Notes have been a distinguishing feature of Ecological Restoration for more than 25 years. This section is geared toward introducing innovative research, tools, technologies, programs, and ideas, as well as providing short-term research results and updates on ongoing efforts. Please direct submissions and inquiries to the editorial staff (ERjournal@sebs.rutgers.edu).Revegetation with native plant species is a common practice in restoration of coastal dunes and mitigation of impacts (erosion, habitat loss, habitat alteration or biodiversity loss). While passive restoration (management to encourage recruitment from persistent mature individuals or from seed banks) is often desirable (Santoro et al. 2012) ... Read More

  • Biochar Application and Soil Transfer in Tree Restoration: A Meta-Analysis
           and Field Experiment

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Soil amendments are low-cost techniques that have the potential to increase plant establishment during restoration. Both biochar and soil transfers can ameliorate stressors associated with high mortality of woody plants in restoration projects. In our literature review we found that the beneficial effects of biochar are highly variable among plant species, from highly beneficial to detrimental; potential impacts should be assessed before widespread implementation. In our planting experiment we found a slight increase in survival of Quercus rubra seedlings when soil amendments were applied; there were no effects on biomass.Under stressful conditions, forest restoration and regeneration may require active intervention. ...            Herbicide and Seeding Treatments for Native Grassland Restoration

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: We measured plant and butterfly response to herbicide and seed mixture treatments in restored Midwestern prairies dominated by an exotic cool-season grass species.Sites were divided into three equal "patches" for treatment application.Treatments included herbicide alone, herbicide and a seed mixture added, and a control.Floral richness and diversity increased in treatment patches relative to the control while butterfly diversity improved across whole sites but not among patches.Herbicide application—in situations like these—may prove an effective restoration tool in combatting invasive cool-season grasses but further action is likely necessary for the restoration of more environmentally sensitive animal ... • Relationships between Overstory and Understory Components of Young Natural
           and Reconstructed Boreal Aspen Stands

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: A primary reclamation goal in northeastern Alberta, Canada, is to develop locally common, self-sustaining, boreal forest ecosystems. We compared interactions between overstory and understory components for two reclamation treatments and natural, wildfire-origin forest stands six years following disturbance to determine if similar processes are structuring the plant communities. After wildfire, stands with higher densities of aspen suckers generally have greater diversity and abundance of mostly native, understory plants. On reclaimed sites, particularly on peat-mineral mix (PMM) soils, aspen regeneration from seed appears to be inhibited in areas with high cover and richness of non-native understory plants; greater ... • Tropical Forest Restoration in the Eastern Himalaya: Evaluating Early
Survival and Growth of Native Tree Species

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Active restoration is essential even at sites within Protected Areas that show poor natural regeneration and are heavily infested with weeds.Despite pronounced seasonality in these tropical forests, certain species performed well across both the wet and dry seasons, highlighting their value for restoration.Determining survival and growth rates across species at every site is important as it can vary across species and sites. This information along with the ecological role and functional traits of species may play an important role in determining the initial choice of saplings for restoration efforts. The biodiverse forests of South and Southeast Asia experience the highest rate of forest loss (Laurance 2007), with a ...
