  • Experimental and Numerical Investigation of Recirculation Structures in
           Isothermal Swirling Coaxial Jet

      Abstract: AbstractThree-dimensional (3D) unsteady Reynolds-averaged Navier–Stokes (URANS) simulations are conducted in a coaxial swirling jet. Two distinct types of recirculation zones (RZ) relevant to coaxial swirling jets are considered based on the modified Rossby number Rom, which is known to represent the ratio of axial velocity deficit between two coaxial streams to the characteristic tangential velocity at the nozzle exit. The two flow states studied are Rom>1 and Rom≤1. The former is characterized by regions of high strain (especially in the shear layer between central and coaxial jet). It is found in this study that renormalization group (RNG) k−ɛ model is the suitable model for 3D URANS simulation of Rom>1 flow state. This is attributed to the model's ability to simulate flow regions that are heavily strained. The simulated results are compared with two-dimensional laser Doppler velocimetry measurements conducted as part of this study. For the flow states Rom≤1, which are characterized by the dominance of radial pressure gradient arising due to rotational (swirling) effect over the pressure gradient due to axial velocity deficit, the Reynolds stress model (RSM) is found best to simulate the flow topologies and mean and turbulent quantities. The time-averaged results obtained from optimized turbulent models are employed to gain insights into the fluid mixing phenomenon in these RZs. The unsteady axial velocity fluctuations obtained from both experiments and URANS simulations are analyzed in the frequency domain to gain insights into dominant axial oscillations prevalent in RZs.

  • An Optimization-Based Design Strategy for Centrifugal Compressors of
           Automotive Turbochargers and the Comparison of Five Particular
           Optimization Methods

      Abstract: AbstractIt is possible to optimize a turbocharger's performance for a broad range of engine operating points. However, most of the turbochargers have distinctive performance characteristics independent of engine operation. Therefore, the correct way to obtain the maximum performance from an engine is to design its turbocharger with the specific engine performance map in mind. This paper deals with the effective use of computational methods to create optimal turbocharger compressors for realistic engine operating conditions. The present process has four steps: preliminary analysis, throughflow analysis, optimization, and computational fluid dynamics (CFD) analysis. In the preliminary analysis, gas dynamics and Euler turbomachinery equations are used to calculate the basic dimensions. In the throughflow analysis, calculated dimensions are used to create a parametric three-dimensional (3D) geometry. A throughflow analysis generates the two-dimensional flow results using the meridional geometry of this 3D geometry. The main contribution of this research is the five different optimization methods that are employed and compared. The efficiency of the rotor is defined as the objective function to be maximized. A comparison of the five optimization schemes showed that the genetic algorithm (GA) is the most suitable method for the current design optimization problem. In the final step, a CFD solver is used to assess the created design's final performance. The CFD results' validity is checked against a reference compressor's test results. This study also indicates that preliminary sizing followed by a well-built throughflow analysis eliminates the need for a fully parametric 3D CFD-based design.

  • Local Entropy Generation Analysis for Cavitation Flow Within a Centrifugal
           Pump

      Abstract: AbstractLocal entropy generation is derived from the second law of thermodynamics, which can directly identify the source of irreversible dissipation and learn more about the physical mechanism of performance degradation. Zwart cavitation model is modified to clarify the rapid head drop of a cavitation flow within a test centrifugal pump, and it is used to simulate the cavitation flow. Local entropy generation method is used to analyze the cavitation flow with varying net positive suction head. The magnitude of entropy generation in different types and regions is compared. Spatial distribution of turbulent and near-wall entropy generation are analyzed. Results show that the modified Zwart cavitation model can better capture the cavity morphology and its evolution. Turbulent and near-wall entropy generations, which mainly concentrate on the impeller, have a large proportion of total entropy generation. The rapid increase in fluctuating velocity entropy generation near the impeller blade pressure side and near-wall entropy generation near the trailing edge of the impeller blade are the main reasons for the rapid head drop within a test centrifugal pump. The sources of turbulent and near-wall entropy generation are vortex and shear stress, respectively.

  • Investigation of Relationship Between Flow Structures and Drag Forces on
           Microfin Enhanced Surfaces Using Large Eddy Simulations

      Abstract: AbstractThis study proposes a numerical model to collect and analyze relationships between flow structures and drag forces on a microfin enhanced surface. We utilized a large eddy simulation (LES) with a localized, dynamic kinetic energy, subgrid-scale model (LDKM) to predict turbulent flow structures. The accuracy of the numerical model was verified by a telescopic particle image velocimetry (PIV) system. Of special note was the strong match of PIV flow structures with numerical flow structures simulated with LES. To detect two main flow structures, lateral and longitudinal, a new method based on the correlation coefficient of velocity fluctuation was developed. Two main types of drag, form, and skin-friction, were discussed and analyzed as occurring on complex near-surface engineered enhancements. Several problems about the relationships were discussed and solved. First, the study determined which drag force dominated the pressure drop (Δp) with different Reynolds numbers. Second, the study analyzed how turbulent flow structures affected form drag and friction drag, respectively. Third, the study explained why the microfins in the paper designed by Webb et al. were better suited for the high Reynold number cases (Reynolds number ≈ 28,000). The goal of the paper was not to find a new Reynolds number-based correlation but to find flow structures responsible for pressure drop and understand the mechanisms causing it.

  • Interfacial Characteristics of Power-Law Viscoelastic Fluid With Heat and
           Mass Transfer in Planar Configuration

      Abstract: AbstractIn this study, a linear stability principle is utilized to investigate the Rayleigh–Taylor stability at the power-law viscoelastic fluid/inviscid gas interface. The power-law viscoelastic fluid lies above the gas and heat is transferred from the upper phase to the lower phase and vice versa. The simplified formulation for heat transport derived by Hsieh (1972, “The Effect of Heat and Mass on Rayleigh Taylor Instability,” ASME J. Basic Eng., 94(1), pp. 156–160) is utilized here. In the perturbed state, the mathematical equations are linearized and the well-known normal mode procedure is employed to examine the stability. An implicit dispersion relationship in the terms of growth rate parameter is achieved and solved through the Newton–Raphson method. The various plots are made to study the behavior of flow variables on the stability of the interface. It is found that the instability of the interface decreases if the transfer of heat is increased. The power-law fluid interface is more stable than the inviscid fluid interface while it is more unstable than the corresponding Newtonian fluid interface. The high power-law index makes the system more stable while a denser power-law fluid reduces the interfacial stability. The consistency coefficient and viscosity of power-law fluid both have a stabilizing character.
