  • Microring resonator based optical logic gates

      Abstract: Abstract Optical logic gates are extremely important elements in realizing high speed computing and processing optical signals in photonic integrated circuits, due to several advantages such as high speed operation and parallelism. We present the implementation of logic gates using microring resonators (MRR) in which electroabsorption and carrier injection induced refractive index change mechanisams are used for changing the state of the logic gates. The optical logic gates are realized by representing the operands as the applied bias on the rings while the operation results of logic gates appears as in the form of light intensities at the output ports of MRR. The working of the proposed optical logic gate configurations and their optimization are also discussed.

  • MOEMS sun sensors for geostationary satellites

      Abstract: Abstract Two-axis sun sensor with wide field of view is a prime requirement for post-launch orbit acquisition manoeuvres and station keeping operations of geostationary satellites. MOEMS sun sensor on a chip has been designed, fabricated and space-qualified. The on-board performance of the sensor in GSAT-29 and GSAT-30 was highly satisfactory in providing required attitude information with respect to sun vector. MEMS technology is very useful to reach the target of reducing the sensor size, enabling mass production capability and thus reducing the cost. These MOEMS micro-sunsensor devices are substitute for bulky coarse analog sun sensor (CASS) and expensive APS-based sun sensor while providing better linear field of view ± 50° and null accuracy better than 0.125°.

  • 2D material-based optical sensors: a review

      Abstract: Abstract The purpose of this review article is to highlight the advanced applications of two-dimensional (2D) materials, with their significance in the development of optical sensors (OSs), with sensing substances, sensing mechanisms, and new sensing mechanism recommendations. Recently, 2D materials have gained considerable interest due to their promise of superior electronic properties, attractive quantum physics, and high photo-response. Numerous studies have been conducted on the exceptional physical/chemical properties and applications of 2D materials. Transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) play a critical role in the next generation of sensing applications due to their low toxicity, inherent layered van der Waals structure, and unmistakable structure that may be designed. A combination of structural, electrical, and optical properties of 2D TMDs is used to fabricate high-performance optical sensors.

  • Recent advancements in plasmonic optical biosensors: a review

      Abstract: Abstract This article presents a review of various recent developments over plasmonic optical sensors for in vivo and in vitro detection. This study also highlights the relative study over detection of various biochemical, cells, bacteria, and viruses, i.e., application of plasmon-enhanced optical sensing in in vivo and in vitro detection. A brief overview of the current biosensing devices, plasmonic-based sensors, their types, comparative study over in vivo and in vitro detection, wearable sensors, packaging of optic-plasmonic sensors, and colloidal nanostructures (NSs) is reported in this study. Plasmonic optical sensors nowadays are employed in a plethora of applications ranging from environmental monitoring to bio (chemical) sensing. In brief, these sensors are applicable for biomedical diagnosis, drug discovery & therapies, material analysis & shaping, (bio) chemical sensing, and environmental monitoring. Plasmonics is a promising field of technology that examines the interaction between light and metallic NSs at the metal–dielectric interface. The commonly employed plasmonic-based methods such as surface plasmonic resonance (SPR) and localized SPR (LSPR), comparative study over the recently reported sensors are well discussed in this review work. This comprehensive study on the extent of biosensor innovation and the respective challenges would open new avenues for exploring the use of plasmonic optical sensors for commercial applications. Overall, we review the major pros and cons of plasmonic-based biosensing with a brief outlook on its advancement and applicability.

  • Photonic crystal based heterostructures in the control of emission and
           diffraction features

      Abstract: Abstract Photonic crystals have very interesting features in their angle-resolved spectral response, originating from the periodic arrangement of dielectric constant and the consequent stopband effects. The response can be further enhanced and more functionalities can be built into the structures by growing heterostructures and superlattices. The role of multiple periodicities enabled by such architectural variations will predominantly influence the way the different wavelengths, either incident from outside or generated in the structure, will be controlled by the structure. To demonstrate this influence, two specific characteristics will be studied in this work. In the case of fluorescent emitters present in the structure, the correct choice of wavelength incident on the structure leads to absorption and subsequent emission at a different wavelength. It is possible to either enhance/suppress the emitted intensity or modify the emitted spectral range of wavelengths by confining the field and utilizing the stopband effect and the additional defect states enabled by the heterostructural design. An efficient control on the gain and the optical feedback in the structures can initiate lasing at threshold values lesser than that of the stand-alone photonic crystals. Alternately, in the case of passive structures which lack absorption and emission, it is advantageous to build the functionality of enhanced diffraction and broadband spatial dispersion of wavelengths, by combining two or more periodic structures into the same platform. Three different heterostructures will be used to demonstrate these effects.

  • Advances in electrochemical and optical sensing techniques for vitamins
           detection: a review

      Abstract: Abstract Vitamins are essential nutrients that aid in metabolism, cell growth, and the appropriate functioning of other biomolecules. They are required for the proper functioning of various systems in human body. Both vitamin shortage and excess can pave the way for a variety of illnesses. They enter the body via food and supplements eaten, making it critical to measure the vitamin concentrations in food, medicines, and biological fluids. The concentrations of these vitamins are determined using a variety of techniques. The performance measure of the techniques like selectivity, sensitivity, and limit of detection is crucial in their utilization. Among the many techniques of determination, electrochemical sensing and optical sensing have garnered widespread interest because of their potential to improve performance. Additionally, the introduction of innovative materials has added a lot of benefits to sensing. The aim of this article is to summarize significant work toward recent improvements in electrochemical and optical methods for detecting different vitamins. Additionally, it attempts to assess the gaps in vitamin sensing in order to encourage researchers to fill such gaps that will benefit the community.

  • Role of electrodes on perovskite solar cells performance: A review

      Abstract: Abstract The breakthrough discovery of organic–inorganic metal halide perovskite materials for harvesting solar energy has generated renewed interest in the field of photovoltaic devices. Perovskites as absorber materials have gained attention because of many interesting properties. The performance of such devices is highly influenced by the properties and quality of the individual layers in the architecture. For perovskite solar cells, in order to reach the category of commercial photovoltaic technology, the most significant obstacle is the long-term device stability. Though the common metal electrode-based devices have exhibited high power conversion efficiency, they play a vital role in accelerating the degradation of the devices. Exploring various alternative electrode materials and electrode structures are attractive grounds for research. This review aims to summarize the significant research work carried out in recent years and provide an extensive overview of the electrodes used till date in perovskite solar cells. We present a critical survey of the recent progress on the aspect of electrodes to be used in perovskite solar cells. This is hypothetically assumed to be helpful in taking right steps towards future advancements in the perovskite solar cell technology.

  • Study of circular embedded delamination in laminated composites by
           prognostic approach for structural health monitoring applications

      Abstract: Abstract Fibre-reinforced polymer laminated composites have found extensive applications in the aviation industry due to their exceptional properties and advantages over other materials. But when interface becomes weaker in the transverse direction due to manufacturing defects or impact loads or other processing activities, among the failure mechanisms de-laminations could occur and these are known to degrade the buckling strength of the laminated composite structures under compressive loads. Failure in typical delamination configurations are studied in the current work under progressively increasing compressive loads using cohesive zone modelling. To initiate the current work, the size effects of de-laminations are investigated followed by the size of the insert that produces delamination damage during fabrication. In the analysis, through mode I strain energy release rates (SERR), the load to initiate delamination is estimated. Both buckling and post-buckling regimes are studied. Apart from these models, a composite panel (NASA Panel), on which experimental work was reported in the literature, is analysed for comparison purposes. In addition, a cross-ply laminate is analysed using surface-based cohesive contact method and the solution is compared with results obtained for the same problem using MVCCI post-processing technique for different imperfection factors. The focus of this paper will be on inter-laminar delamination.

  • Optical polarization response of collagen—role in clinical cancer
           diagnostics: part 2

      Abstract: Abstract The advent of SHG microscopy for biological tissue characterization has opened up avenues in probing ultrastructural features of the sample. The nonlinear polarization properties of collagen manifest in the tissue SHG polarimetry response. As compared to the anisotropic properties of collagen probed using linear polarimetry, SHG probes into the alterations to tropocollagen structures and thus aids in representing early alterations during pathological tissue transformation. This review summarizes SHG polarimetric studies with stromal collagen and correlations with histopathology, primarily for cancerous tissues.   • Fiber Bragg grating sensors for aerospace applications: a review

      Abstract: Abstract With the advancements in fiber optics, FBG sensors have become one of the most widely used sensors in a diverse range of applications such as civil engineering, telecommunication, biomedical, automotive, aerospace, etc. This is due to their attractive properties of flexibility, lightweight, immunity to electromagnetic interference (EMI), high sensitivity and serial multiplexability. In aerospace engineering-related applications where high precision, remote sensing and lightweight sensors are crucial, FBG sensors have proved to be excellent candidates. In this article, we have provided an overview of the advancements in FBG sensing technology for various applications in the field of aerospace engineering, namely high pressure sensing, ground-based aerodynamic test facilities, shock pressure sensing, spacecraft monitoring and structural health monitoring of aircraft composites.

  • Challenges in coherent beam combining of high power fiber amplifiers: a
           review

      Abstract: Abstract Coherent combining of light from multiple high power fiber amplifiers is a promising pathway to scaling the output power to hundreds of kiloWatts. In the last decade, substantial progress has been made in terms of scaling number of elements along with improvement in phase control techniques to achieve stable locking, resulting in tens of kiloWatts of output power. In this paper, we review the progress in coherent beam combining of fiber amplifiers in the master oscillator power amplifier configuration. We also discuss the challenges in power scaling as well as the current trends in the corresponding mitigation strategies. Specifically, the use of optimized phase modulation waveforms for mitigation of stimulated Brillouin scattering in high power amplifiers, scaling of the number of beam combining elements through deep-learning based phase control, and the use of micro-lens array for enhancing beam combination efficiency are discussed.

  • Challenges and opportunities in distributed anti-Stokes Raman thermometry

      Abstract: Abstract Distributed sensing is a key requirement for the health and condition monitoring of several capital-intensive structures such as aerospace vehicles, bridges, dams, tunnels, oil/gas pipelines, and electric power distribution networks. Specifically, distributed temperature sensing is quite useful in several of the above applications, for which Raman scattering-based fiber sensors is a well-known solution. Distributed temperature sensing can be carried out by combining the Raman scattering phenomenon in optical fibers with optical time domain reflectometry (OTDR) to realize a Raman OTDR, and the overall method is referred to as distributed anti-Stokes Raman thermometry (DART). In this work, we have reviewed the current status, challenges and opportunities of DART system along with their potential applications.

  • Magnetically enhanced photoconductive high voltage control

      Abstract: Abstract The recent surge of interest in electrostatic actuators, particularly for soft robotic applications, has placed increasing demands on high voltage control technology. In this respect, optoelectronic bidirectional switching and analogue regulation of high voltages is becoming increasingly important. One common problem is the leakage current due to dark resistance of the material or device used. Another is the physical size of such elements. However, their ability to provide galvanic separation makes them a very attractive alternative to conventional (wired) semiconductor elements. This paper gives an overview of available methods and devices before introducing a concept based on the combination of photoresistive and magnetoresistive effects in Gallium Arsenide that are potentially applicable to other semiconductor materials.

  • Coherent receivers for fiber optic communications

      Abstract: Abstract Bandwidth hungry applications like Internet of Things, edge computing, cloud computing, cloud storage, online video classes, online gaming, webinars, etc., are increasing, and the number of telecom/internet customers is growing each day. Largely with incoherent method of transmission, the legacy fiber optic networks have met the bandwidth requirement for over two decades. Due to the exponential rise in the bandwidth requirement, it has become imperative to explore other degrees of freedom of the optical carrier for modulation, so that spectral efficiency can be increased by replacing only the transceivers at the edges of the networks. Implementation of coherent communication systems was possible after overcoming the challenges both in hardware and software. Though research in the area of coherent optical communications started much earlier than that of EDFA, it faced challenges such as (i) stabilizing frequency difference between a transmitter and receiver within close tolerances (ii) lack of availability of an optical hybrid/mixer to combine the signal and the local oscillator and (iii) digital signal processing capability to compensate for channel and receiver impairments. Further setback was the commercial implementation of EDFA-based systems. We review the suitability of different types of receivers, requiring minimal or no DSP, depending on the modulation scheme and the geographical area of coverage of the networks.

  • Integrated photonics for RF/microwave analog signal processing of wireless
           systems: a review article

      Abstract: Abstract The continuing extensive researches and developments in integrated photonics technology have accelerated the pace of applied research in integrated microwave photonics for RF/microwave wireless systems. Integrated photonic systems outweigh their integrated electronic counterparts because of exceptional and inherent capabilities such as low loss, ultra-broadband bandwidth, high degree of reconfigurability and flexibility, immune to electromagnetic interference, and ultra-compact footprint. On the other hand, the matured semiconductor manufacturing processes have enabled the rapid advancement of optical light sources, photodetectors, modulators, and optical passive signal processors in hybrid or heterogenous integration material platforms. Thus, the successful progress in optoelectronics integration and light manipulation has underpinned the development of programmable and multifunctional photonic processors for RF/microwave analog signal processing in wireless systems. In this paper, we review the state-of-the-art advancements in integrated microwave photonic devices and systems such as microwave photonic filtering, phased array antenna photonic beamforming, and microwave photonic signal generation.

  • Aggregation-induced emission in thiophene derivatives

      Abstract: Abstract Organic LEDs consist of thin films of organic materials in which the optical property of the emitting layer is of prime importance. Most of the fluorescent molecules exhibit quenching of optical emission when in the aggregated state, which directly impacts the performance of the device built using them. Aggregation-induced emission (AIE) is an elegant way to circumvent the quenching of emission from the molecules when deposited as thin films and has been well studied. This review briefly explains several underlying mechanisms explored by researchers that come into play in the aggregated state of the molecules and the methods suggested by them to ensure AIE. While a popular belief is to ensure propeller-like molecular structure resulting in AIE, in this review, we show that in thiophene and bithiophene derivatives, AIE can still be ensured without resorting to propeller-like molecular structures. The suitability of thiophene and bithiophene derivatives in fabrication of red wavelength emitting organic light emitting diodes is explored.

  • Resonant optical modes in periodic nanostructures

      Abstract: Abstract The resonant nanostructures are significant for enhancing the electromagnetic field density in a nanoscale region, suitable for many novel nanophotonic applications. This review article provides an insight into various optical resonance phenomena associated with resonating structures. We initiated our discussion with photonic resonating structures and extended to the excitation mechanism of various plasmonic modes and their applications. Further, we have extended the discussion on the hybrid photonic-plasmonic mode generation through the interaction of photonic-plasmonic resonances, which can substantially concentrate the electromagnetic field with remarkable quality factor. We have also briefly reviewed the newly emerging class of resonating structures known as the metasurfaces originated through the scattering of the electromagnetic wave through dynamic charge-current oscillation, enabling wavefront modulation, polarization tuning, and nonlinear harmonic generation. Then, we extended our review very briefly to the non-radiating resonant modes evolved by suppressing the coupling of resonant state with the radiation channels resulting in the formation of the anapole and bound state in the continuum. The anapole state has been realized in a structure supporting electric and magnetic resonance, mainly in a metasurface, whereas the BIC state has been experimentally realized in a comprehensive range of photonic, plasmonic, metasurface, and different hybrid material-based structures.

  • Photonic crystal based biosensors: an overview

      Abstract: Abstract Photonic Crystals (PC) have emerged as interesting photonic structures for the past few decades and play a vital role in the field of optical communication, biomedical sensing, and other applications. Photonic crystals have a major impact in designing the variety of photonic sensors due to its compactness, high sensitivity, high selectivity, fast responsiveness, immunity to electromagnetic noise, etc. The physical property of the photonic crystals is altered to create the sensors for various applications such as temperature, pressure, stress, gas, chemical, biomaterials, etc. PC-based biosensors assure fast response, high accuracy, good quality factor with low losses. Several sensing schemes such as, Surface plasmon resonance, Infra-Red (IR) absorption, Refractive index sensing, and Displacement sensing are used and being explored using different PC design structures. The Effective Refractive Index sensing is the most common sensing mechanism used in Biosensor and optical properties of the sensors are analyzed by comparing the spectral properties of the transmitted and reflected power. This review article aims to discuss about the recent developments in PC-based biosensors with different design structures, analysis, and different analytes, biomaterials. Further, the comparison of the design, structural and performance parameters of various biosensors are tabulated.

  • Optical polarization response of collagen: role in clinical cancer
           diagnostics—part I

      Abstract: Abstract Optical polarimetry has increased interest in probing finer details of soft tissue components representing alterations during pathological tissue transformation. Stromal collagen, a potential candidate for optical polarimetry, plays a vital role during the developmental stages of cancer. This review presents an overview of the biology and optical response of stromal collagen followed by instrumentation and image analysis in various optical polarimetry configurations that help extract the relevant features for efficient tissue classification for diagnostic applications. Part 1 deals with the linear optical polarization properties of collagen, while Part 2 probes the extraction of finer structural details of collagen with the help of nonlinear optical polarimetry. Both in vivo and extracted tissue measurements are discussed, and directions for future research are recommended.
