  • Molecular identification of Bifidobacterium sp. from local yoghurt and
           evaluation of growth inhibition activity against pathogenic bacteria

      Abstract: Yoghurt is a potential source of probiotic bacteria including Bifidobacterium sp. In this context, sour yoghurt sample was collected from local market in Rajshahi for molecular identification and characterization of Bifidobacterium sp. with promising antagonistic activity against pathogenic bacteria. Isolation was done on Luria broth agar media for molecular identification and revealed that isolated bacterium showed 90% similarity with Bifidobacterium sp. Antibiotic sensitivity test result revealed that isolated Bifidobacterium sp. was sensitive to erythromycin, kanamycin, gentamycin, tetracycline, ciprofloxacin, doxycycline out of eleven commercially used antibiotics. Moreover, antagonistic activity of Bifidobacterium sp. was evaluated in our present study against four pathogenic bacteriathrough disc diffusion method. Bifidobacterium sp. had relatively strong antagonistic effect (inhibition zone ≥15 mm) against Salmonella sp. with 16mm and 19mm zones of inhibition at doses of 150 and 200 μg/disc, respectively. Similarly, the isolate showed strong growth inhibitory activity against Acinetobacter sp. and E. coli with inhibition zone of 17 mm and 16 mm at dose of 200 μg/disc while moderate growth inhibitory activity was observed against Aeromonas sp. at applied four doses. Furthermore, present investigation showed that the isolated Bifidobacterium sp. had the utmost effect against Salmonella sp. and exhibited growth inhibition of understudy pathogens in such pattern Salmonella sp.>Acinetobacter sp.> E. coli> Aeromonas sp.   • Transfer of heavy metals to leafy vegetables in Gazipur textile area

      Abstract: Heavy metal pollution of soils is a major concern today because contamination of food chain considered as one of the major environmental pathways of human exposure leading to potential health risk.A pot experiment was carried out to investigate the transfer of Zn, Cu, Ni, Fe, Cd, Cr, Pb and Mn from non-contaminated and contaminated soils to jute leaves vegetable plant and to evaluate their associated health risk in the local population.The mean concentration of the heavy metals in jute leaves vegetable plants followed a decreasing order of Fe>Zn>Mn>Cu>Cr>Pb>Cd>Ni. Among the all heavy metals the highest transfer factor (TF) values was found for Cu (77.50-34.95) and the lowest TF value was observed for Ni(0-0.001) in jute leaves vegetables plant. The daily intake of metals (DIM) for a person through ingestion of jute leaves were in order of Fe>Mn>Zn>Cu>Cr>Pb>Ni>Cd. The values of health risk index (HRI) for the heavy metals were less than 1, therefore, no significant health risk is anticipated for the local consumers through ingestion of jute leaves.   • Enhancement of dissolution profile of poorly aqueous soluble atorvastatin
           calcium by binary and ternary solid dispersion techniques

      Abstract: Atorvastatin calcium (ATV) is an HMG-CoA (3-hydroxy-3-methylglutaryl coenzyme A) reductase inhibitor commonly known as a cholesterol-lowering agent. As a poorly water-soluble drug its absolute bioavailability is very low. To increase the water solubility as well as oral bioavailability, different hydrophilic carriers were used in different ratios (1:0.5, 1:1 and 1:2) to prepare reproducible binary and ternary solid dispersion formulations of ATV by simple physical mixing (PM) and fusion or melting technique. In vitro dissolution studies results revealed that in all cases, the cumulative percent drug release from ATV ternary SD formulations were greater than binary formulations, some marketed products and pure ATV powder. The order of the carriers in enhancing the drug release was found as kollidon 90F > pregelatinized starch > lutrol> kollidon 12F (99.1%, 98.8%, 96% and 95% respectively) for ternary SD formulations whereas pure ATV powder and marketed products showed cumulative percentage release 70.8%, 68.9% (B1) and 73.1% (B2), respectively. The best-out performed ternary SD formulation ATV:Kollidon 90 F (1:2) were further characterized using FT-IR and SEM. SEM analyses indicated conversion of crystal drug to amorphous form and FT-IR data suggested that little or no interaction between the drug and polymer. Bangladesh J. Sci. Ind.   • Flowering attributes of Henckelia Royal Queen influenced by pinching and
           Paclobutrazol application

      Abstract: An experiment was carried out to determine the effect of pinching practice and different concentrations of Paclobutrazol (PBZ) on the flowering of Henckelia Royal Queen plants.Completely randomized design with eight treatment combinations of pinching or non-pinching and different concentrations of Paclobutrazol (0, 15, 30and 60 ppm) soil drenchwas usedwith eight replicates for each treatment. Pinching was practiced twice at two weeks intervals. Flowering parameters viz. number of flower buds, days taken to flowering, number of flowers, pedicel length, corolla length and corolla width were measured at two weeks intervals from 9thweek after the treatment application. Results disclosed that plants showed better flowering performances (P<0.05) with increasing concentrations of PBZ, but degree of leaf deformation was increased. Therefore, the application of 15 ppm PBZ with pinching showed better to obtain dwarf Henckelia Royal Queen plants with improved flowering quality as commercial potted plants. Bangladesh J. Sci. Ind.   • Ion dynamics in post harvest saline soil influenced by organic amendment
           and moisture level

      Abstract: Organic amendments might be effective and sustainable in the amelioration of saline soil if proper management put in place. Accordingly, subsequent pot and field experiments were conducted in a saline soil to determine the effects of moisture levels and organic amendments on cation exchange capacity (CEC), ion dynamics under rice cultivation. The increment of CEC of the studied post harvest soils was significant, except for the moist condition under field experiment. There were significant variations in ion dynamics among the treatments under both the experiments at saturated soil conditions. Exchangeable Na+ contents decreased and K+ contents increased significantly with the increased rates of treatments. Exchangeable Ca2+ and Mg2+ contents of soil followed almost the similar trends as that exhibited by K+ but not significant. Among the anions, chloride decreased significantly under both the experiments while sulfate and bicarbonate contents increased by the applied treatments.   • Alleviation of arsenic accumulation in rice by applying silicon-rich rice
           husk residues in Bangladesh soil

      Abstract: While the accumulation of arsenic in rice (Oryza sativa L.) has been highlighted as a major concern in Bangladesh, sustainable measures are critically needed to reduce the uptake of arsenic by rice plants. In the present study, a pot-experiment was conducted using a Boro rice variety (BRRI dhan-29) in two geomorphologically different soils from Holocene floodplains and Pleistocene terraces, in which silicon-rich fresh rice husk (FRH) and rice husk ash (RHA) were applied, as silicon fertilisers, in the soils at the rate of 1% (w/w) of rice residue:soil.In the Holocene floodplain soils, the application of FRH was found to decrease arsenic in grain, husk and straw by 42, 56 and 51%, respectively, whereas the soil incorporation of RHA decreased arsenic in grain, husk and straw by 26, 37.5 and 36%, respectively. In the Pleistocene terrace soils, the application of FRH reduced the grain, husk and straw arsenic by 38, 38 and 44%, respectively, whereas the RHA decreased the grain, husk and straw arsenic by 26, 30 and 29%, respectively. Fresh rice husk was found to be more effective in alleviating arsenic accumulation in rice than RHA. In both the Holocene floodplain and Pleistocene terrace soils, the grain concentrations of calcium, phosphorus, silicon, and zinc were found to be increased with the decrease of arsenic in the grain due to the use of FRH and RHA. The present study suggests that silicon-rich rice husk residue scan be used as silicon fertilisers to reduce arsenic accumulation in rice in Bangladesh. Bangladesh J. Sci. Ind.   • Cation dynamics and growth morphology of aromatic rice under salt stress

      Abstract: Salinity is an abiotic stress which affects plant’s growth, morphology and cellular functions, and alters the ionic balance in the cytosol and vacuole in various crops. In the present investigation, salt stress was tested with three rice (Oryza sativa L.) varieties/genotypes viz. Pokkali, Sunduri Samba, and Khasa with three levels of salinity (0, 6, and 9 dSm-1). In the investigation,growth, morphology, and ionic status in roots, stem, and leaf were observed under pot culture with three replicates in each treatment. The results of the experiment revealed that salt stress decreased in growth attributes namely, root dry matter, shoot dry matter, total dry matter and root: shoot ratio. Sunduri Samba showed higher values, but Khasa the lowest. Mineral ion content especially the cation in the plant tissue namely Na+, K+, Ca2+, Mg2+ differed significantly due to salt stress as well as the K+/ Na+ ratio decreased in root and shoot due to salinity. Sunduri Samba maintained quite higher K+/Na+ than the susceptible genotype. Due to salinity, different growth characteristics and K+ concentrations decreased but Na+ concentration increased. Here the tolerant genotype Sunduri Samba accumulated higher amounts of K+ than the susceptible genotype Khasa and altered the ionic ratios through distribution of Na+ ion in shoot. Bangladesh J. Sci.   • Composite fabrication from fat extracted limed fleshing: solid waste
           management in tannery

      Abstract: In tannery, fleshing is the unavoidable solid waste which has negative effect on the environment. Fleshing contains fat, and protein.In this work, fat extracted fleshing was used for composite fabrication. After collecting limed fleshing, fat was extracted in water bath.The fat extracted fleshing was dried, ground,passes through 80-mesh and homogenized.For proper adhesion and bonding with fleshing powder, epoxy resin and hardener were mixed at various ratios and poured onto an aluminum sheetfor 24 h curing. The mechanical properties of the composite were investigated by tensile strength, elongation at break, and Young’s modulus. The composite was characterized by Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) Spectroscopy and Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) for related functional groups and surface analysis. The investigation provided satisfactory information on the proper bonding of the fleshing powder and resin/hardener.   • Potential of Ulva linza L. and Caulerpa racemosa var. uvifera seaweeds
           from Cox’s Bazar, Bangladesh as sea vegetable

      Abstract: The nutritional quality parameters of leafy Ulva linza L. collected from the west coast of the Naf river estuary, Teknaf and grape-like Caulerpa racemosa var. uvifera collected from St. Martin's Island, Cox's Bazar, Bangladesh, were studied. Total protein content in U. linza (22.05±1.73%) was found significantly (p<0.05) higher than C. racemosa var. uvifera (18.20±1.50%) but with low crude lipids in the former; total amino acid content was also higher in the former, both having nearly the same amount of essential and non-essential amino acids; vitamin C content (about 2.5 mg/100 g) was nearly identical but β -carotene content was higher in the later (9.04 mg/100 g dry wt.). Crude fiber in U. linza was low (4.21±0.43%) but high in C. racemosa var. uvifera (18.20±1.50%). Other micronutrients were also ascertained. The nutritional quality parameters determined suggested that the “sea-salad” and “sea- grapes” can be used as sea-vegetables and food supplements. Bangladesh J. Sci. Ind. Res.56(3), 223-230, 2021
