  • Finite element implementation based on explicit, Galerkin and
           Crank–Nicolson methods to phase field theory for thermal- and surface-
           induced martensitic phase transformations

      Abstract: Abstract In this paper, a nonlinear finite element approach is used to solve the time-dependent phase field or Ginzburg–Landau (GL) equation for phase transformations (PTs) at the nanoscale. The utilized Helmholtz energy includes a third-degree polynomial of the phase variable which results in a nonlinear dependence on the order parameter in the GL equation. The method of weighted residuals is used to derive the corresponding finite element formulation. Using the divergence theorem, the Laplace term in the GL equation is reduced to the first-order term which can represent both the isolated and variable surface energy boundary conditions, allowing for surface-induced phenomena. In order to apply the Dirichlet boundary condition, i.e., constant phase order parameter, the penalty method is used. Quadrilateral elements have been used in the Cartesian coordinate system, and irregular elements for complex geometries are transformed to regular ones by using natural coordinates. Four-point Gaussian integral has been used for integral calculations. The alpha family and both the explicit and implicit methods (Crank–Nicolson and Galerkin methods) are used for time discretization. Thus, the Picard and Newton–Raphson methods are used to linearize the nonlinear equation and their computational efficiencies are compared. In the explicit method, in order to calculate the inverse of the stiffness matrix, the lumping technique has been used which transforms it into a modified diagonal matrix, and this significantly reduced the computation time. In the implicit methods of Picard and Newton–Raphson, both the exact and numerical approaches were used to calculate the tangential matrix for the unknown order parameter and no difference in results between them was found. The convergence for both the Picard and Newton–Raphson methods was studied and compared. Cubic to tetragonal, thermal- induced transformation in NiAl is considered. The order parameter profile and the width and velocity of austenite (A)–martensite (M) interface are calculated and verified with previous works. Examples of thermal- and surface-induced PTs in nanosized samples without hole and with it are studied, presenting planar and nonplanar interfaces. The developed algorithm and code present a proper tool to solve more advanced phase field problems for PTs at the nanoscale with complex geometries and including mechanics effects and with considering complex interactions.

  • On how swarm robotics can be used to describe particle system’s
           deformation

      Abstract: Abstract In previous works, we have described time evolution of a two-dimensional particle lattice, subject to deformation, without the use of Newton’s law. According to our experience, in control of robotic swarm, the new position of a particle is determined by the spatial position of its neighbours; therefore, we have used an interaction law based on the spatial position of the particles themselves. The tool that we have realized reproduced some behaviour of deformable bodies both according to the standard Cauchy model and the second gradient theory. In this paper, we try to stress what is still under investigation, like the relationship describing the interaction rule and its physical meaning; moreover, we shall describe as some solutions do not agree with the behaviour of the classical solution coming out from differential equations.

  • Surface tension and reaction stresses of a linear incompressible second
           gradient fluid

      Abstract: Abstract The paper starts with a detailed investigation of the boundary conditions at free and fixed boundaries of any second gradient material and clarifies whether a surface tension is to be expected. The classical approach to the reaction stresses of higher gradient materials leaves a vast indeterminacy in most boundary value problems. An advanced approach is presented that yields much more definite distributions of the reaction stresses and consequently also of the surface tension. It starts from a compressible fluid the stiffness and bulk viscosity of which tend to infinity. Furthermore, the complete set of restrictions on the material parameters of linear incompressible second gradient fluids is derived from the postulate of nonnegative dissipation. Finally, a stirring process with a free surface is studied as an example. The results are based on the numerical solution of the boundary value problems of three partial differential equations of second, fourth and sixth order, respectively.

  • Dynamics of frictional systems with memory

      Abstract: Abstract Dynamics of a number of shock-vibrating systems, accounting for dry friction forces with memory, is analyzed. The vibration limiter and the vibrational system interact according to Newton’s hypothesis. The mathematical model (MM) of the systems is a strongly nonlinear non-autonomous system with a variable structure. A special feature of the approach of the present study is that a point mapping is formed on the basis of the time of relative rest of the system. The moments of the transition of an image point from the surfaces of sliding motions that correspond to the relative rest of the system are determined each time from the solution of nonlinear equations taking into account functional dependence of the coefficient of friction of relative rest and the previous history of the process. This necessitated the development of an original approach to point mapping and to the interpretation of the obtained results. A new investigation methodology and an original software product have been developed for analyzing the phase portrait structure of the MM, depending on the characteristics of sliding and static friction forces, as well as on the type and location of the limiter. The character of the change of the bifurcation diagrams enables to determine the main laws of the process of change of the motion regimes (from periodic motion regimes of arbitrary complexity to the transition to chaos via the period-doubling process) when varying the parameters of the vibrational system (the amplitude and frequency of the periodic effect, the form of the functional relation describing the change of the coefficient of friction of relative rest). The dynamic characteristics of the systems with and without accounting for the vibration limiter are compared in the paper.

  • Thermal buckling of functionally graded piezomagnetic micro- and nanobeams
           presenting the flexomagnetic effect

      Abstract: Abstract Galerkin weighted residual method (GWRM) is applied and implemented to address the axial stability and bifurcation point of a functionally graded piezomagnetic structure containing flexomagneticity in a thermal environment. The continuum specimen involves an exponential mass distributed in a heterogeneous media with a constant square cross section. The physical neutral plane is investigated to postulate functionally graded material (FGM) close to reality. Mathematical formulations concern the Timoshenko shear deformation theory. Small scale and atomic interactions are shaped as maintained by the nonlocal strain gradient elasticity approach. Since there is no bifurcation point for FGMs, whenever both boundary conditions are rotational and the neutral surface does not match the mid-plane, the clamp configuration is examined only. The fourth-order ordinary differential stability equations will be converted into the sets of algebraic ones utilizing the GWRM whose accuracy was proved before. After that, by simply solving the achieved polynomial constitutive relation, the parametric study can be started due to various predominant and overriding factors. It was found that the flexomagneticity is further visible if the ferric nanobeam is constructed by FGM technology. In addition to this, shear deformations are also efficacious to make the FM detectable.

  • Computational analysis of an infinite magneto-thermoelastic solid
           periodically dispersed with varying heat flow based on non-local
           Moore–Gibson–Thompson approach

      Abstract: Abstract In this investigation, a computational analysis is conducted to study a magneto-thermoelastic problem for an isotropic perfectly conducting half-space medium. The medium is subjected to a periodic heat flow in the presence of a continuous longitude magnetic field. Based on Moore–Gibson–Thompson equation, a new generalized model has been investigated to address the considered problem. The introduced model can be formulated by combining the Green–Naghdi Type III and Lord–Shulman models. Eringen’s non-local theory has also been applied to demonstrate the effect of thermoelastic materials which depends on small scale. Some special cases as well as previous thermoelasticity models are deduced from the presented approach. In the domain of the Laplace transform, the system of equations is expressed and the problem is solved using state space method. The converted physical expressions are numerically reversed by Zakian’s computational algorithm. The analysis indicates the significant influence on field variables of non-local modulus and magnetic field with larger values. Moreover, with the established literature, the numerical results are satisfactorily examined.

  • Peridynamic model for visco-hyperelastic material deformation in different
           strain rates

      Abstract: Abstract This study presents a peridynamic (PD) constitutive model for visco-hyperelastic materials under homogenous deformation. The constitutive visco-hyperelastic model is developed in terms of Yeoh strain energy density function and Prony series. The material parameters in the model are identified by optimizing the classical stress–strain relation and tension test data for different strain rates. The peridynamic visco-hyperelastic force density function is proposed in terms of the peridynamic integral and the Yeoh strain energy density. The time-dependent behaviour for different strain rates is captured by numerical time integration representing the material parameters. The explicit form of peridynamic equation of motion is then constructed to analyse the deformation of visco-hyperelastic membranes. The numerical results concern the deformation and damage prediction for a polyurea membrane and membrane-type acoustic metamaterial with inclusions under homogenous loading. Different surface defects are considered in the simulation. The peridynamic predictions are verified by comparing with finite element analysis results.

  • Dispersion correction in split-Hopkinson pressure bar: theoretical and
           experimental analysis

      Abstract: Abstract The paper presents experimental and mathematical analysis of the dispersion effect of pulses, which propagate along an elastic bar whose cross section has a finite radius. In some cases, dispersion can influence significantly the interpretation of the experimental data, obtained in experimental schemes, which are based on using measuring bars for investigation material behavior at high strain rates (the split-Hopkinson pressure bar method and its modifications). Solutions for the Pochhammer–Chree equation are obtained for various measuring bars used in experimental setups in the Research Institute for Mechanics of Lobachevsky State University of Nizhny Novgorod. The procedure of pulse shift accounting for dispersion has been implemented and tested on the basis of our experimental data and the data available in the existing scientific literature. This procedure was employed to analyze the influence of pulse shape on the degree of its change in shape during its propagation along a measuring bar. It is shown how the procedure of dispersion shift improves the quality of interpretation of primary experimental data for some materials.

  • An antiplane deformation of a functionally graded half-space

      Abstract: Abstract The problem about a pure shear of an elastic functionally graded half-space by a strip punch is considered. The half-space shear modulus grows exponentially by depth. The problem has been reduced to solution of an integral equation of the first kind with a difference kernel which was solved using asymptotic methods. The analysis of the contact stresses versus the shear modulus parameters is presented. The obtained relationships provide the basis for solution of an inverse problem for determining the functionally graded half-space shear modulus parameters as functions of the contact shear stress values. Also, it was shown that by choosing proper shear modulus parameters one can develop a sufficiently thick “approximately homogeneous” stress area inside of a functionally graded half-space.

  • Novel description of bone remodelling including finite memory effect,
           stimulation and signalling mechanisms

      Abstract: Abstract A new mathematical model is presented for bone remodelling that includes a finite memory effect. In this new model, stimulus resulting from mechanical loading is separated from the signalling to grow or absorb bone. Also, a signal decaying exponentially to the distance from the point produced as well as an effect of decaying signal in time are considered. In addition, the model presented correctly predicts the synthesis and resorption of the bone tissue in a normal healthy mandible and in cases when teeth are missing. The model presented could be implemented to study cases of bone diseases where the signalling between the cells is disrupted and to predict changes in bone caused by several anomalies, such as missing a tooth or the presence of a dental prosthesis.

  • Modeling of combustion and turbulent jet diffusion flames in fractal
           dimensions

      Abstract: Abstract Turbulent diffusion flames are considered an active field of research used in many engineering applications of combustion theory. The basic properties of jet diffusion flames were obtained in the literature, and their confrontation with observations and experiments support the mathematical aspects of combustion theory founded by famous researchers throughout dozen of years. From the other side, fractal analysis was undertaken effectively in the literature based on recent experimental studies and observations supporting the idea that flame instability results in growth of fractal structures at a flame front. Besides, fractals were used successfully to model the effects of turbulence on flame propagation in heat engines and turbulent flows. In this study, we used the new concept of “product-like fractal measure” introduced recently in the literature by Li and Ostoja-Starzewski in their formulation of anisotropic continuum media to model combustion and turbulent jet diffusion flames in fractal dimensions. The basic equations for flames in fractal dimensions have been derived and applied to study laminar and turbulent non-premixed flame besides flame extinction due to heat volumetric heat loss. Several features have been obtained and discussed in particular the application of the theory at small combustion scales.

  • Finite deformations of a nonlinearly elastic electrosensitive tube
           reinforced by two fiber families

      Abstract: Abstract In this paper, the theory of nonlinear electroelasticity is used to examine deformations of a dielectric elastomer tube, reinforced by two families of helical fibers with different angles, with closed ends and compliant electrodes on its side surfaces. To illustrate the behavior of the fiber-reinforced tube, a specific form of electroelastic energy function is used for numerical purposes. Numerical dependences of the deformation on the non-dimensional potential difference between electrodes are obtained for the considered energy function. The influence of fiber stiffness and their angles on a response of the tube are analyzed. The presented theory and results may be of value in the development of soft robots and actuators.

      Abstract: Abstract Our study is a generalization of some results obtained by Synge in the classical theory of elasticity. By this extension, we wish to cover the theory of micropolar elastic bodies. More precisely, we approach the electroacoustic energy flux in the case of plane waves of harmonic type which propagate in piezoelectric crystals which are supposed to be prepolarized and prestressed.

  • Viscoelastic behavior of filled silicone elastomers and influence of aging
           in inert and hermetic environment

      Abstract: Abstract This article presents a series of experimental investigations on the viscoelastic behavior of silica-filled and silver-filled silicone rubber on the unaged and aged states. The study of specific aging conditions relative to the electronics industry is proposed in this work, namely aging in a hermetic, initially inert atmosphere, at high temperatures. Viscoelastic properties of the materials are measured through DMA tests. Strain sweep tests are carried for the characterization of unaged materials, and frequency sweeps at ambient temperature are performed to characterize the aging-dependent behavior. As a result of the experimental studies, an aging-dependent generalized Maxwell model is proposed in an attempt to describe the evolution in the behavior of silicones due to aging.

  • Nonlinear analysis for propellant solids

      Abstract: Abstract This research paper aims to develop a mathematical model for the interpretation of experimental data for propellant solids. A simple model is constructed by assuming a spherical unit cell. Equations are written with respect to the volume fraction of the filler particles as well as the fraction of the area that is unbonded. A sphere of a finite radius is assumed, containing a rubber matrix inside of which is a rigid filler particle of a smaller radius. A parameter is assigned for the porosity of the material while effective expressions for the shear and the bulk modulus and the strain energy function are written for the composite material. Based on the proposed strain energy function, the stress–strain relations are defined for the propellant solids. The model is based on four material parameters that were evaluated using Farris’s experimental data.

  • Torsion of a multilayer elastic cylinder with sequential attachment of
           layers with multiple superposition of large deformations

      Abstract: Abstract An exact analytical solution to the problem of large deformations of a multilayer cylindrical rod under multistage deformation is obtained for incompressible isotropic nonlinear elastic materials. At each step of deformation, another layer is attached to the rod, after which twisting and tension–compression of the cylinder along with the attached layer occur. The solution is obtained on the basis of the theory of multiple superposition of large deformations using one of the universal solutions of the problem of nonlinear elasticity. Numerical results are given. Nonlinear effects and effects associated with superposition of large deformations are analyzed.

  • Investigation of interlaminar stresses surrounding circular hole in
           composite laminates under uniform heat flux

      Abstract: Abstract In this paper, interlaminar stresses in a symmetrical laminated composite plate with a circular hole under uniform heat flux were examined. The analytical solution was achieved based on the boundary-layer theory by Lekhnitskii’s solution. The stress relations related out-of-plane stress components were obtained by variational principle states, the minimum principle of complementary energy, zero-order equilibrium relations and boundary conditions for each layer. The unknown factors in the stress relations were obtained by the equilibrium equation in integral form. This solution prepared a calculation method via adaptability for examining the 3D thermal stresses in perforated laminated with curved boundaries. The results were obtained for \([45/-45]\) s, [0/90]s, \([30/-30]\) s lay-ups made of graphite/epoxy and glass/epoxy materials.

  • Multiscale geomechanical modeling under finite strains using finite
           element method

      Abstract: Abstract The article considers an approach for multiscale geomechanical modeling under finite strains. A mathematical model, methods and algorithms for the multiscale numerical estimation of the effective elastic and thermal properties of the preloaded heterogeneous porous materials under finite strains are presented. The developed algorithms were applied to the problem of the estimation of the effective properties of core samples. The digital models obtained from computed tomography scan data of core samples are used. An initial voxel representation of the digital core sample is transformed into an unstructured mesh, thus reducing the number of unknowns by orders of magnitude and requiring computational resources accordingly. The mesh convergence tests demonstrated the efficiency and correctness of the developed algorithms. The calculations of the effective elastic and thermal properties of preloaded porous materials are performed with CAE Fidesys using finite element method. The numerical results demonstrate the significant impact of pre-loading by internal pressure on the effective properties of porous materials.
