  • Protecting surface and buried structures from tunnelling using pile walls:
           a prediction model

      When tunnelling poses excessive risks for buildings and buried foundations, a pile row barrier may shield the existing structure from ground movements. This paper presents a three-dimensional linear elastic prediction method to evaluate the protective action of pile walls against surface and subsurface ground movements due to new tunnels, both directly behind the wall as well as within the entire ground. Analyses are carried out to evaluate the vertical and horizontal movements of the ground and the pile wall as the result of soil–pile row interaction. New factors that quantify the wall efficiency in reducing settlements and deflections behind the wall are proposed; the results indicate that the effectiveness of the pile wall at reducing horizontal displacements is limited. Subsequently, predictions are compared against field and numerical data to demonstrate that the elastic solution is applicable, particularly for small ground losses. Finally, the barrier efficiency in reducing settlements is discussed comparing pile walls and diaphragm walls.

      This study investigates the thermo-mechanical behavior of energy piles equipped with a spiral pipe configuration. The analysis is based on the results of a full-scale energy pile as well as three-dimensional thermo-mechanical finite element analyses. The thermo-mechanical behavior of two energy piles with five U-shaped pipes connected in series and parallel, characterized by the same total length of the piping network, is also analyzed numerically for comparison purposes. The results of this work highlight that energy piles equipped with a spiral pipe configuration are characterized by the lowest trends of average temperature variation and thermally induced vertical stress within their volume, as compared to energy piles equipped with five U-shaped pipe configurations connected in series or parallel. Considerable variations in temperature and thermally induced vertical stress arise in the vicinity of the piping network embedded in all of the considered energy piles. Nevertheless, energy piles equipped with a spiral pipe configuration appear the best solution for practical applications in comparison with U-shaped pipe configurations of the same total length, because they maximize the heat exchange that is achieved with the ground and minimize the associated thermally induced variations of their mechanical response.

  • In situ desaturation tests by electrolysis for liquefaction mitigation

      Electrolytic desaturation is a potential method for improving the liquefaction resistance of liquefiable foundations by reducing the soil saturation. In this study, in situ desaturation tests were performed to investigate the resistivity of soil at different depth and water level of the foundation under different currents. The test results show that at constant currents of 1, 2, and 3 A (ampere, unit of the direct current), the saturation of the treated foundation reached 87%, 83%, and 80%, respectively. During the electrolysis process, the generated gas migrates vertically and horizontally under the influence of buoyancy and gas pressure. In the end of electrolysis, the gas inside the sand foundation basically migrates vertically only. The higher current intensity employed for electrolysis will affect the uniformity and stability of the gas. At constant currents of 1, 2, and 3 A, the difference between the maximum and minimum degree of saturation in the treated foundation was 14%, 18%, and 19%, respectively; and after electrolysis had been halted for 144 h, the saturation in the treated foundation was 90%, 85%, and 87%, respectively. The electricity consumption analysis indicates that the desaturation method has excellent economic benefits in the treatment of saturated sand foundations.

  • Interpretation of undrained shear strength observed in confined triaxial
           compression tests on compacted clay

      This paper presents an interpretation technique to quantify the effects of compaction state and matric suction on the undrained shear strength of compacted clay under confined undrained triaxial compression. This novel technique is based on the mathematical frameworks of the “stress history and normalized soil engineering property” (SHANSEP) method for saturated soil and the “Barcelona basic model” (BBM) for unsaturated soil. Test data of compacted Calgary till were analyzed and interpreted using the proposed technique. The interpretation technique is very useful in delineating the relative impacts of the factors on the behavioural trends in measured undrained shear strength. It was found that in addition to the initial compacted void ratio and suction, soil structure and failure mode exert significant influence on the undrained shear strength of compacted clay. This technique is attractive to engineering practitioners because the confined undrained compression tests (with no pore-air and pore-water pressure measurement) are much simpler and less time-consuming compared to rigorous laboratory tests on unsaturated soil.

  • Smart determination of borehole number and locations for stability
           analysis of multi-layered slopes using multiple point statistics and
           information entropy

      Subsurface stratigraphy of multi-layered slopes is essential and crucial for slope stability analysis. It is usual practice for engineers to interpret stratigraphic boundaries separating different soil layers using both site investigation data and prior knowledge of local geology, but such practice might encounter significant challenge when the site data are very limited. In addition, uncertainty in stratigraphic boundaries has not been explicitly or quantitatively considered in planning of site investigation (e.g., determination of borehole number and locations). There lacks a quantitative and objective tool to determine the optimal locations and number of boreholes for slope stability analysis while accounting for stratigraphic uncertainty. In this study, a smart sampling strategy based on multiple point statistics and information entropy is proposed for delineation of slope subsurface stratigraphy and planning of geotechnical boreholes. It is a data-driven approach that enables an ensemble of prior knowledge within a training image using multiple point statistics. The proposed method not only provides evolution of the most probable interpolation from sparse measurements and the associated interpolation uncertainties, but also adaptively determines the optimal locations of boreholes. Effectiveness of the proposed method is illustrated and validated through both a simulation example and a real case. It is found that the data-driven framework can automatically identify locations of largest interpolation uncertainty within a multi-layered slope conditional on its outcrops, and that the associated stratigraphic uncertainty gradually reduces as borehole number increases. More importantly, the optimal number and locations of boreholes required for slope stability analysis are adaptively determined by the proposed method.

  • Selection of standard penetration test number for geotechnical
           investigation of a vertical cross section considering spatial variability
           and correlation in soil properties

      The standard penetration test (SPT) is a widely used in situ test for characterizing variation of subsurface soil properties, and results of site investigation are usually simplified as a two-dimensional (2D) vertical cross section for subsequent geotechnical design and construction. Current geotechnical design codes and guidelines only provide general recommendations for selection of an appropriate number of in situ tests (e.g., SPT) (e.g., the greater variability of subsurface conditions, the larger number of SPTs required to obtain sufficient underground information). No quantitative or rational method is available for selecting the appropriate number of SPTs considering spatial variability and correlation in subsurface conditions. A comprehensive parametric study is carried out in this study to investigate the influence of spatial variability in subsurface conditions on the minimum SPT number needed for satisfying an accuracy requirement of site investigation. Random field is adopted to model spatial variation and correlation in soil properties in typical site conditions, and 2D Bayesian compressive sampling is used to interpolate sparse SPT data. Based on the parametric study results, a statistical chart is developed for geotechnical engineers to conveniently select an appropriate number of SPTs in a vertical cross section. Real SPT data from New Zealand are used to illustrate and validate the proposed method.
