  • Green synthesis of silver nanoparticles having specific anticancer
           activity against MDA-MB 468 carcinoma cells

      Abstract: In this work formation of silver nanoparticles using pomegranate fruit (Punica granatum) extract and its bio applications were studied. Gradual appearance of a peak at 422 nm during the reduction of AgNO3 by the fruit extract confirmed the formation of AgNPs. FTIR spectra indicated the details of formation mechanism. Images obtained from scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmittance electron microscopy (TEM) confirmed that the sample contains spherical AgNPs and XRD analysis showed its (FCC) crystal structure. This study also revealed that the synthesised AgNPs were monocrystalline in nature. Application of these AgNPs were studied measuring their affinity to bovine serum albumin (BSA) and human serum albumin (HSA). Cytotoxicity of the synthesised AgNPs was determined by DAPI staining. The results showed that the nanoparticles have significant anticancer activity against triple negative breast carcinoma and MDA-MB-468 cells. We concluded that the cell death was routed through apoptotic pathway.

  • Platinum (II) complexes and their nanoformulations: preparation,
           characterisation and cytotoxicity

    • Abstract: Development of novel drugs or drug delivery systems has attracted much attention of researchers. In this study, we aimed to prepare 2 new Pt(II) complexes with thiosemicarbazone and their nanoformulations for cancer treatment application. Pt(II)-camphor thiosemicarbazone/P1 and Pt(II)-camphor 4-phenyl thiosemicarbazone/P2) were successfully prepared and structurally confirmed by MS, IR, 1H-NMR, UV–vis spectroscopies and thermal analysis. From the complexes, 2 PLGA-based nanoformulations (nP1 and nP2) were synthesised with the average size of 50 nm by emulsification/evaporation method and investigated for their toxicity against Hep-G2, LU-1 and RD cancer cell lines. The results show that the Pt(II) complexes and their nanoformulations were potential for chemotherapy.

  • Effect of synthesis methods on the acetone sensing behaviour of
           fluorescent carbon dots

    • Abstract: Carbon dots (CDs) are an emerging family of nanostructures due to their unique optical properties, high chemical stability, biocompatibility, and low toxicity, they have been able to attract a lot of attention and cause significant changes in various scientific fields. In this study, the green synthesis of stable CDs by hydrothermal and pyrolysis methods (H-CDs and P-CDs) is performed from Nigella sativa seeds as a natural precursor. Using these methods, the formation and the surface passivation of the CDs are done simultaneously, resulting in the intrinsic fluorescence emission. The as-prepared CDs are characterised by UV–vis spectroscopy, fluorescence spectroscopy, elemental analysis, dynamic light scattering, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and transmission electron microscopy, from which their structural information and property are interpreted. The fluorescence intensity graph of H-CDs and P-CDs, with excitation wavelengths in 360 nm, shows the highest emissions at 430 and 410 nm, respectively. Particle size distribution was obtained at about 4 nm. The fluorescent quantum yield (QY) of H-CDs and P-CDs was measured to be 7% and 2%, respectively. The synthesised CDs showed good photoluminescence (PL) responses to acetone solution. Acetone had a different effect on the PL properties of CDs obtained from pyrolysis and hydrothermal methods so that in P-CDs, it increased the intensity of PL, and in H-CDs; it decreased the intensity of PL.

  • Surface functionalisation of multi-walled carbon nanotubes with
           tris(2-aminoethyl)amine and their characterisation

    • Abstract: Carbon nanotubes are widely employed in various applications because of its excellent properties. However, they generally suffer from the low dispersion into aqueous solutions. Many applications of carbon nanotubes require previous surface functionalisation. In present study, we report the surface functionalisation of multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) by grafting a tris(2-aminoethyl)amine (TAA) via a facile method. The pristine MWCNTs and TAA-functionalised MWCNTs (MWCNTs-TAA) are characterised by field-emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) and Raman spectroscopy, thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA). The TEM image of MWCNTs-TAA exhibits significantly improved dispersion of the MWCNTs. The high-resolution FE-SEM images clearly show the opening ends of nanotubes after TAA functionalisation. The increase in nanotube diameters of MWCNTs-TAA is observed compared to the pristine MWCNTs. The strong absorption peak at 1530 cm−1 from FTIR spectra for MWCNTs-TAA indicates that the amine groups are successfully grafted onto the surface of MWCNTs. The TGA curves of MWCNTs-TAA reveal a weight loss in the temperature range of 200 to 450 °C attributed to the decomposition of the amine groups, and the highest weight loss is obtained to be 22.14 wt% after 12 h reaction time. This work demonstrates the facile and efficient method to functionalise MWCNTs with TAA.

  • Green synthesis of Cu2O/Cu nanoparticles and conversion to Cu
           microparticles in one-bath reaction method for improved electrical
           conductivity

    • Abstract: This work aims at investigating the conversion of Cu2O/Cu nanoparticles, prepared by green synthesis using artichoke extract, with ascorbic acid (AA) in one-bath process: a totally green method for production of pure Cu particles. Different pH values of the solution were studied to assess the conversion to Cu phase particles. It was found that by using the optimum synthesis conditions for the production of Cu2O/Cu nanoparticles and adding at the end of the synthesis AA, the conversion of Cu2O phase to pure Cu phase was possible when the pH of the solution was 8 or 10, but not when it was 12. The size of particles increased from nano to micron-sized after adding AA and multi-shaped particles with spherical, triangular, cubical and rod like shapes were formed, depending upon the pH of the synthesis solution. The electrical resistivity of the obtained pure Cu microparticles was studied after low-temperature sintering at different times and after preparing compact powder discs. After sintering for 30 min at 180 °C, discs showed resistivity of 2.9 × 10–3 Ωcm and after sintering for 60 min at 180 °C the resistivity lowered to 5.1 × 10–4 Ωcm. It can be concluded that the low resistivity of powder discs mainly depended on the size of Cu particles and sintering time, when using a fixed sintering temperature. The present synthesis of pure Cu phase microparticles is simple, convenient, environmentally friendly, cost-effective, it does not use inert gases, it is performed in aqueous media and the produced Cu particles are suitable for low electrical resistivity applications.

  • Study of stability and antimicrobial activity of colloidal
           Ag/SiO2 nanocomposites

    • Abstract: Ag/SiO2 colloidal nanocomposites (NCs) were synthesised by the chemical reduction of silver ions on a silica surface; NaBH4 was used as a reducing agent, while chitosan served as a stabiliser. Scanning electron microscope (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) results of Ag/SiO2 showed a high-density distribution of silver nanoparticles on the silica surface. The influence of pH, ionic concentrations on the stability of Ag/SiO2 colloidal NCs was investigated. Ag/SiO2 colloidal NCs were stable in a wide range of pH values (3–10) and the presence of cations (Mg2+ 25 mM, Ca2+ 15 mM, Fe2+ 1 mM, Fe3+ 0.8 mM). Furthermore, the antimicrobial activity of Ag/SiO2 colloidal NCs against Ralstonia solanacearum 15 (R. solanacearum 15), Bipolaris oryzae (B. oryzae) was evaluated. The minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of Ag/SiO2 colloidal NCs for R. solanacearum 15 was 10 ppm, two times lower than that of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) at 20 ppm, which were prepared by the same route. The inhibitory rate of Ag/SiO2 colloidal NCs against B. oryzae was 99.3% higher than the inhibitory rate of AgNPs 80.4% at the same Ag concentration of 32 ppm. Therefore, Ag/SiO2 colloidal NCs with high antimicrobial activity and stability in wide range pH and ionic strength are a promising pesticide in agriculture.

  • Characteristics of 2D ZnO-based piezoelectric nanogenerator and its
           application in non-destructive material discrimination

    • Abstract: The present report aims at the application of piezoelectric nanogenerators for non-destructive material discrimination. The detailed characteristics of zinc oxide (ZnO) nanosheet-based piezoelectric nanogenerator and its applications in mechanical energy harvesting and sensing are considered as major objectives of the present study. The nanogenerator is fabricated with ZnO nanosheet film prepared by hydrothermal method with necessary electrodes. The nanogenerator response as a function of different load resistances, different finger-tapping frequencies, different finger-tapping pressures, bending and twisting movements are recorded. The maximum output power of 18 nW is observed at the load resistance of 200 KΩ with 60 mV output voltage. The output voltages of ~150 mV, 350 mV, and 200 mV are observed for finger-tapping, bending, and twisting movements, respectively. The output voltages of ~76 mV, 100 mV, and 145 mV are observed for low, medium, and high pressures applied by the finger. Nanogenerator is also tested for its stability of the output at different points of time after the device fabrication and found stable over for one year. Further, the nanogenerator is used as an impact sensor for non-destructive material discrimination application. The output voltages of 176 mV, 225 mV, 272 mV, and 300 mV were observed for acrylic, ceramic, marble, glass balls of uniform diameter but with a different mass. The fabricated nanogenerator can discriminate the equal size materials of different densities. Further, ZnO nanosheet-based nanogenerator has potential applications in mechanical sensors due to the high flexibility and mechanical reliability of the ZnO nanosheets.

  • Impact of bio-target location and their fill-in factor on the sensitivity
           of hetero channel double gate MOSFET label-free biosensor

    • Abstract: In this work, the performance of dielectric modulated InP/InGaAs/InP based on the hetero channel dual material double gate MOSFET (DM-H-DMDG MOSFET) for the label-free electrical identification of bio-targets has been inspected with the help of a 2D TCAD device simulator. The impact of bio-target's location and their fill factor position has been analysed to observe the device sensitivity. Under the dry situation, the effect of charged and non-charged biomolecules on the electrical features such as threshold voltage, electric field, drain current, subthreshold performance, and sensitivity of DM-H-DMDG MOSFET has been evaluated. Simulation results show that the threshold voltage sensitivity of the proposed device is 0.62 and 0.59 when the fill factor is 100% and 50% respectively. The peak value of an electric field is 4.2 × 106 V cm−1 and 4.5 × 106 V cm−1 respectively near the source end and 0.5 × 105 V cm−1 and 5.5 × 105 V cm−1 near the drain end, when positively/negatively charged biomolecules are immobilised in the cavity. Again, the threshold voltage of the device is obtained as 0.265 V/0.245 V when the fill factor is 100% and 50% respectively.

  • Potential antidiabetic and anticancer activity of copper oxide
           nanoparticles synthesised using Areca catechu leaf extract

    • Abstract: Herein we report the facile synthesis of copper oxide nanoparticles (CuO NPs) using Areca catechu leaf extract as a bio-reducing agent and capping agent via solution combustion synthesis. The formation, crystalline structure and morphology of as-prepared CuO NPs were confirmed using UV–visible spectroscopy, powder x-ray diffraction (XRD), energy dispersive x-ray spectroscopy (EDS), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), high resolution transmission electron microscopy (HR-TEM) and selected area electron diffraction (SAED) techniques. The powder XRD analysis confirmed the purity of the as-synthesised material and crystalline structure. SEM images revealed that the morphology of prepared CuO NPs is monoclinic phase in nature. This was further confirmed by observing TEM micrographs, which revealed the spherical nature of obtained material with an average size of particle between 10 and 25 nm. Further, the hypoglycaemic effect of CuO NPs was observed to be facilitated by impeding α-amylase, which also promoted glucose uptake by the yeast cells. In addition, CuO NPs showed significant antidiabetic activity. Obtained results suggest that the inhibition of α-amylase enzyme with IC50 value 260.33 μg ml−1 may be one of the feasible ways through which the CuO NPs exerts their hypoglycaemic effect. Furthermore, cytotoxic activity performed using CuO NPs against human lung cancer cell line (A549) proved that the prepared CuO NPs have significant anticancer activity with 8.84 μg ml−1 at 50% inhibition concentration (IC50 value).
