      Abstract: Hydroxyapatite (HAp) was known as a bone implant material due to its biocompatibility, bioactive, chemical stability and its compositional similarity to natural bone. In this work nanocrystalline HAp coatings were prepared on 316L stainless steel (316LSS) substrates using a potentio-dynamic method (potential scanning in the range from 0 to  −1.6 V/SCE) in the presence of dissolved 3  ×  10 −2 M Ca(NO 3 ) 2   +  1.8  ×  10 −2 M NH 4 H 2 PO 4   +  0.15 M NaNO 3 and 6% H 2 O 2 (w/w). We report the influence of experimental conditions such as temperature (25 °C–60 °C), scanning rate (1 mV s −1 –10 mV s −1 ) and scanning times (1 times–7 times) on the morphology, structure and composition of the HAp coatings by FTIR, XRD and SEM analysis.   • Effects of annealing temperature on the structural, mechanical and
           electrical properties of flexible bismuth telluride thin films prepared
           by high-pressure RF magnetron sputtering

      Abstract: In this work Bi x Te y thin films were deposited on polyimide substrate by a high-pressure RF magnetron sputtering technique. The deposited condition was maintained using a high pressure of 1.3  ×  10 −2 mbar. The as-deposited films show Bi 2 Te 3 structure with Te excess phase (Te-rich Bi 2 Te 3 ). After that, as-deposited films were annealed in the vacuum chamber under the N 2 flow at temperatures from 250 to 400 °C for one hour. The microstructure, cross-section, [Bi]:[Te] content, and the mechanical, electrical and thermoelectric properties of as-deposited and different annealed films were investigated. It was found that the annealing temperature enhanced the crystallinity and film density for the temperature range 250–300 °C.   • Synthesis and characterization of copper zinc oxide nanoparticles obtained
           via metathesis process

      Abstract: Copper-doped zinc oxide nanoparticles were successfully synthesized by grinding copper acetate and zinc acetate powder with different starting molar ratios in combined with sodium hydroxide. The effect of initial copper and zinc molar ratios on the product samples was investigated and discussed. Relevant ligand coordination type of reactant acetate salt precursors and product samples were investigated by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). The particle shapes and surface morphologies were characterized by field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Phase structures of prepared samples were studied by x-ray powder diffraction (XRD) and x-ray absorption near-edge spectroscopy (XANES) was applied to investigate the local structure of Cu and Zn environment atoms.   • Rapid synthesis of tin oxide nanostructures by microwave-assisted thermal
           oxidation for sensor applications

      Abstract: In the present work nanostructures of tin oxides were synthesized by a microwave-assisted thermal oxidation. Tin precursor powder was loaded into a cylindrical quartz tube and further radiated in a microwave oven. The as-synthesized products were characterized by scanning electron microscope, transmission electron microscope, and x-ray diffractometer. The results showed that two different morphologies of SnO 2 microwires (MWs) and nanoparticles (NPs) were obtained in one minute of microwave radiation under atmospheric ambient. A few tens of the SnO 2 MWs with the length of 10–50 µ m were found. Some parts of the MWs were decorated with the SnO 2 NPs. However, most of the products were SnO 2 NPs with the diameter ranging from 30–200 nm. Preparation under loosely closed system lead to mixed phase SnO–SnO 2 NPs with diameter of 30–200 nm.   • Dehydration of D-xylose to furfural using acid-functionalized MWCNTs

      Abstract: Acid-functionalized multi-wall carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) catalysts were prepared by a wet chemical sonication with various acid solutions, i.e. H 2 SO 4 , H 3 PO 4 , HNO 3 , and HCl. Sulfonic groups and carboxyl groups were detected on MWCNTs with H 2 SO 4 treatment (s-MWCNTs), while only carboxyl groups were presented from other acid treatments. The catalytic dehydration of D-xylose into furfural was evaluated using a batch reactor at 170 °C for 3 h under N 2 pressure of 15 bar. The highest furfural selectivity was achieved around 57% by s-MWCNTs catalyst, suggesting a positive role of the sulfonic functionalized groups. The effect of Co species was related to their Lewis acid property resulting in the enhancement of xylose conversion with low selectivity to furfural product.

  • The effect of green synthesized gold nanoparticles on rice germination and

      Abstract: In this paper, gold nanoparticles were synthesized by means of a green approach with Tiliacora triandra leaf extracts under different conditions. No additional reducing or capping agents were employed. The gold nanoparticles were characterized using UV–visible spectrophotometry, transmission electron microscope, x-ray diffraction and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. Gold nanoparticles synthesized at temperature of 80 °C were further used to treat rice ( Oryza sativa ) grains at different concentrations (0, 10, 100, 500, 1000, 2000 mg l −1 ) for one week. While germination percentages were high (95–98.38%), a slight decrease in root and shoot lengths relative to the control was observed. Phytotoxicity results indicated that the plant synthesized gold nanoparticles were of minimal toxicity to rice seedlings.   • Green synthesis of silver nanoparticles by Ricinus communis var.
           carmencita leaf extract and its antibacterial study

      Abstract: In this study, we report synthesis of silver nanoparticles (RcAgNPs) from silver nitrate solution using methanolic leaf extract of Ricinus communis var. carmencita . The polyphenols present in the leaves reduce Ag ++ ions to Ag 0 followed by a color change. Silver nanoparticle formation was ensured by surface plasmon resonance between 400 nm to 500 nm. Crystallinity of the synthesized nanoparticles was confirmed by UHRTEM, SAED and XRD analysis. The capping of phytochemicals and thermal stability of RcAgNPs were assessed by FTIR spectra and TGA analysis, respectively. It also showed antibacterial activity against both gram positive and gram negative strains. RcAgNPs were non-toxic against normal cell line (mouse fibroblast cell line L929) at lower concentrations (80 µ g ml −1 ).

      Abstract: Silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) are an important class of nanomaterials, which have used as antimicrobial and disinfectant agents due to their detrimental effect on target cells. In the present study it was explored to deliver a novel tamoxifen drug system that can be used in breast cancer treatment, based on chitosan coated silver nanoparticles on MCF-7 human breast cancer cells. AgNPs synthesized from Adenia hondala tuber extract were used to make the chitosan coated AgNPs (Ch-AgNPs), in which the drug tamoxifen was loaded on chitosan coated silver nanoparticles (Tam-Ch-AgNPs) to construct drug loaded nanoparticles as drug delivery system. The morphology and characteristics of the Ch-AgNPs were investigated by UV, FTIR, zeta potential and FESEM.       Abstract: In this work activated ilmenite nanoparticles were prepared by chemical-assisted in mechanical ball-milling process from ilmenite ore as starting raw material. The effect of milling process on their phase composition, particle size, surface morphology and local structure were investigated. Phase identification and crystalline structure of ilmenite mineral, milled samples and subsequent leached residues were characterized by x-ray diffraction (XRD). Meanwhile, the distorted octahedral structure and the oxidation state of relevant elements in ilmenite ore and activated ilmenite obtained by different process conditions were analyzed by x-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS).       Abstract: Europium doped hydroxyapatite (EDA) nanorods with linoleic acid passivated silver ions on their surfaces were synthesized using facile, one-step hydrothermal route. Annealing the samples at 250 °C resulted in formation of ultra-small silver (USS) nanoparticles on the surface by nucleation through diffusion process. EDA exhibited luminescence properties due to the presence of europium ions doped on the calcium sites of hydroxyapatite. These EDA nanorods exhibited a different luminescent behavior in the presence of silver ions and USS nanoparticles. This report also demonstrates excellent biocompatibility and cytotoxicity of EDA nanorods with silver ions towards fibroblast cell lines (F929) and breast cancer cells (MCF-7). Visible and near infra-red (NIR) emissions in EDA, induced by silver ions and USS nanoparticles makes it a potential system for deep tissue imaging applications.
