  • The Impacts of City Size and Density on CO2 Emissions: Evidence from the
           Yangtze River Delta Urban Agglomeration

      Abstract: With rapid urbanization, cities plays an increasingly key role in addressing CO2 emission-related issues. This study aims at analysing the spatial relation between city size and CO2 emissions in the case of Yangtze River Delta Urban Agglomeration (YRDUA) in China over the years from 2006 to 2016, making a contribution to the existing body of knowledge of the relationships between urban form and CO2 emissions. This paper identified the following main findings: (1) There is a U-shape relationship between population size and CO2 emissions in YRDUA; (2) There is a negative sublinear relationship between CO2 emissions and city density in YRDUA; (3) The ideal urban form for low CO2 performance in YRDUA is 2.716 million people living in high population density; (4) Increasing population size is an effective but not a long-term approach for CO2 emissions reduction, because for every marginal increase of city density, the marginal reduction of CO2 emission will decrease. (5) A demographic change in YRDUA from low-density cities to high-density cities would benefit CO2 emission performance. These findings confirm the important roles of population size and density for CO2 emissions reduction in urban agglomeration and so help shape current policy debates.

  • Community-Based Riverine Flood Risk Assessment and Evaluating Its Drivers:
           Evidence from Rarh Plains of India

      Abstract: Riverine flood, a common natural hazard in the rarh plains of India, induces frequent changes in the landscape morphology and societal transformations. Therefore, a community-based risk assessment is attempted in the context of riverine floods in the rarh plains with special reference to the Mayurakshi River Basin based on the nature of flood hazard and community vulnerability. Flood hazard is measured in terms of flood frequency, depth and durations while the community vulnerability is assessed using its physical, economic, demographic and social-infrastructural components. The present study is executed over a statistically significant sample size of 2382 households across the 43 villages spread in 5 community development (C.D.) blocks. The analytic hierarchy process (AHP) has been applied for the risk assessment and the relative importance index has been used to quantify the community behaviour. The results portray that the C.D. blocks such as Kandi having the maximum flood magnitude depicts a strong negative relation (R2 = 0.63) with economic vulnerability while the lesser flood-prone C.D. blocks such as Nabagram have strong positive relation (R2 = 0.66) indicating a typical societal transformation coevolved with flood hazards. The ANOVA shows that the religion-based community risk differs significantly in terms of economic and social-infrastructural vulnerability while income-based community risk differs for hazard propensity and total vulnerability. The main driving force leading to this difference in vulnerability and risk is the agricultural distress intensifying the labour migration that brings higher per capita income through foreign remittances. Besides, community behaviour and different adaptation strategies also play important roles in community risk.

  • Firm Location: A Spatial Point Process Approach

      Abstract: We propose an application of spatial statistics to model the location patterns of new firms in the city of São Paulo. In this paper, we assume that the spatial location of these firms was generated by a two-dimensional point process and thus we applied two distinct structures: a benchmark based on inhomogeneous Poisson process, and a stochastic intensity model based on the Log Gaussian Cox process (LGCP). We discuss the use of various types of covariates and generalizations with alternative forms of dependence, interaction effects and joint modeling of marked point processes. The results show the usefulness of these models the construction of spatial location models, combining different data sources and introducing new perspectives on the empirical study of location economics.

  • Application of Spatial Analysis to Identify the Location of Entrepreneurs
           Supported by the Regional Government in Andalusia (Spain)

      Abstract: In this work, spatial analysis was used to identify the locations of entrepreneurs supported by the regional government of Andalusia (Spain). The objective of this research is to study the effectiveness of the support work for entrepreneurship carried out by the Andalusians Entrepreneurship Centres (CADEs) in the autonomous community. As a first approach to this objective, the geographical situation of the supported entrepreneurs is determined, and how that situation influences the support for entrepreneurship is analysed. We use spatial pattern analysis techniques that allow us to assess the impact of these efforts. Attending to the areas of greater concentration as well as those of lower concentration, we conclude that CADEs are an effective instrument of the entrepreneurship policy in this region. In addition, by concentrating on rural and mountain areas, the work of CADEs contributes to the local development of these zones by supporting the development and sustainability of the business sector in areas with higher unemployment rates and a greater threat of depopulation. The study’s conclusions are relevant in showing the role of public administration in the development of European Union (EU) Objective 1 regions and, more specifically, in the support of entrepreneurship.

  • Do Urbanization and Energy-environment Policies Affect Housing Values'
           Evidence From Spatial Textual Analysis

      Abstract: This study examines the impacts of urbanization and energy-environment policies on housing prices across 30 provinces in China from 2000 to 2015. Results indicate that current urbanization policy and current housing policy do not significantly affect the housing prices, but the housing prices are determined by current energy-environmental policy. In addition, we argue that the effects of post urbanization policy and post energy-environmental policy remain highly significant, while the implementation of energy-environmental policy results in an increase in housing prices through the reduction of the emission of industrial dust. Finally, the Clean Energy Policy drives up housing prices in highly regulated provinces in China.

  • Measuring the exposure of Black, Asian and other ethnic groups to
           COVID-infected neighbourhoods in English towns and cities

      Abstract: Drawing on the work of The Doreen Lawrence Review—a report on the disproportionate impact of COVID-19 on Black, Asian and minority ethnic communities in the UK—this paper develops an index of exposure, measuring which ethnic groups have been most exposed to COVID-19 infected residential neighbourhoods during the first and second waves of the pandemic in England. The index is based on a Bayesian Poisson model with a random intercept in the linear predictor, allowing for extra-Poisson variation at neighbourhood and town/city scales. This permits within-city differences to be decoupled from broader regional trends in the disease. The research finds that members of ethnic minority groups can be living in areas with higher infection rates but also that the risk of exposure is distributed unevenly across these groups. Initially, in the first wave, the disease disproportionately affected Black residents but, as the pandemic has progressed, especially the Pakistani but also the Bangladeshi and Indian groups have had the highest exposure. This higher exposure of the Pakistani group is not straightforwardly a function of neighbourhood deprivation because it is present across a range of average house prices. We find evidence to support the view, expressed in The Doreen Lawrence Review, that it is linked to occupational and environmental exposure, particularly residential density but, having allowed for these factors, differences between the towns and cities remain.

  • Local Area Estimates and Geographical Patterns of Australia’s Sexual
           Minority Population

      Abstract: The need for subnational population statistics by sexual identity is being increasingly recognised for a variety of service delivery, analysis, and policy purposes. However, such statistics are rarely produced by statistical offices or researchers. The aims of the paper are to describe a new method for calculating subnational estimates of the population aged 18 and over by sexual identity, and apply it to produce mid-2016 estimates for local areas in Australia. Census counts of persons in same-sex and opposite-sex relationships, survey data by sexual identity and partnership status, and official Estimated Resident Population data are used. The method first involved preparing census-like counts of populations by sexual identity, and then scaling them using iterative proportional fitting to be consistent with local area Estimated Resident Populations and national estimates by sexual identity. We find that the geography of Australia’s sexual minority population is highly concentrated, with the highest proportions of the population identifying as a sexual minority in the inner areas of Australia’s largest cities. However, almost all parts of the county are home to at least a small sexual minority population, even in remote areas. While our estimates remain approximate due to data limitations, they provide a reasonable set of statistics on local area populations by sexual identity.

  • Revisiting Patent Generation in U.S. Metropolitan Areas: 1990–2015

      Abstract: This paper re-examines the shifting pattern of (utility) patents across the American metropolitan landscape during the recent period 1990–2015. Patent volumes and densities (per capita volumes) are both analyzed at five-year intervals. All results reflect a reconstituted data base that addresses the demographic, economic, and geographic conditions prevailing among the nation’s n = 377 metropolitan areas. Standard multivariate analysis is used to distill nearly twenty input variables down to six orthogonal factors. Using the underlying factor scores, performance scores for patenting are calculated across the metropolitan areas at regular points in time. When assembled in order, these cross-sectional scores trace out the performance trends of the various metropolitan economies over the 25-year study period. Linear regression procedures, adjusted for spatial dependency, indicate that two factors—human capital and human-created amenities—have become increasingly important determinants of patenting activity across U.S. metropolitan areas during recent times. A few straightforward policy prescriptions follow from the analysis.

      Abstract: Urban planning is transitioning away from the ‘Predict and Provide’ approach that accommodates automobility and towards the ‘Demand Management’ approach that prioritises alternatives that include active, shared, and public transport and restricts the convenience of automobility. While this transition could prove a sustainable solution for urban mobility, individuals already residing within auto-dependent settings may be unwilling or unable to relocate to high urban density where the alternatives are more viable. As such, restricting the automobility of these individuals potentially leaves them stranded throughout the urban form. The ‘Multimodalism’ approach is a pragmatic alternative that provides Park `n’ Rides, Kiss `n’ Rides, and feeder transit services that ensure everyone has access to rapid public transport yet the approach receives relatively little research attention. As such, researchers, policy makers, and planners are poorly equipped to influence intended multimodal travel behaviours or discourage the unintended such as ‘railheading’ towards more distantly located PnR. In this study, the transport planning and social psychology literature is examined to develop a conceptual model of travel behaviour, and for the first time, railheading behaviour is examined at the metropolitan-scale and explained using the conceptual model. The conceptual model and research findings strengthen the theoretical and empirical foundations for understanding travel behaviour, which in turn supports planning authorities and practitioners in promoting more sustainable transport behaviour, and in preparing for an urban future where Mobility-as-a-Service, ride-hailing, ride-sharing, eScooters, and autonomous vehicles become more integrated and commonplace.

  • Coastal Vulnerability under Extreme Weather

      Abstract: Communities like Santa Barbara, California appear to have it all – beaches, mountains, sunshine, moderate temperatures, small urban population, and close proximity to the large metropolis of Los Angeles. What is not to love' Climate change, drought, flammable vegetation, and naturally prevailing weather conditions make a significant portion of the population vulnerable in many ways. Earthquakes and tsunamis might come to mind, but perhaps more of a threat is fire and/or flooding at, on or near the wildland-urban interface. The recent Thomas fire in December of 2017 and subsequent flooding, debris flow and mudslides in Montecito that followed in January of 2018 highlight what coastal vulnerability means under the new normal of extreme wildfire and flooding danger for this region. This paper discusses the unique hazards along with local weather conditions that contribute to vulnerability. We then detail spatial analytics to assess, model and predict risks. Insights are offered for the Santa Barbara region associated with extreme weather vulnerabilities.

  • How Does Administrative Data Compare with Census Data for the Measurement
           of Internal Migration' The Case of Northern Ireland, 2001–2011

      Abstract: The paper compares and contrasts internal migration measured by healthcard-based administrative data with census figures. This is useful because the collection of population data, its processing, and its dissemination by statistical agencies is becoming more reliant on administrative data. Statistical agencies already use healthcard data to make migration estimates and are increasingly confident about local population estimates from administrative sources. This analysis goes further than this work as it assesses how far healthcard data can produce reliable data products of the kind to which academics are accustomed. It does this by examining migration events versus transitions over a full intercensal period; population flows into and out of small areas; and the extent to which it produces microdata on migration equivalent to that in the census. It is shown that for most demographic groups and places healthcard data is an adequate substitute for census-based migration counts, the exceptions being for student households and younger people. However, census-like information is still needed to provide covariates for analysis and this will still be required whatever the future of the traditional census.

  • Geographical Variation in Local Gender Contracts in Sweden

      Abstract: Despite Sweden’s national gender-neutral family and social policies, local differences in gender contracts exist and have been related to differences in the structure of the labour market and cultural traditions. Existing studies are outdated and used relatively large administratively defined areas, which may lead to several measurement and interpretation errors. This paper examines geographical variation in gender contracts in present-day Sweden using individualized neighbourhoods on different scales. Gender contracts are operationalized using six indicators on the level of family, politics and labour. We identify five types of local gender contracts: the metropolitan gender contract, the progressive gender contract, the suburban gender contract, the commuter gender contract and the traditional gender contract. The most gender equal patterns are found in metropolitan and other urban areas, with high shares of fathers taking parental leave and the highest shares of women with high education and gainful employment, and low shares of young mothers. The analyses give evidence of considerable local variation instead of a dominant gender contract in each region. The findings may stimulate further research and local policies on gender inequality.

  • Urban Spatial Structure in Barcelona (1902–2011): Immigration, Spatial
           Segregation and New Centrality Governance

      Abstract: This paper investigates the impact of the city’s urban spatial structure in shaping population density distribution over time. This research question is relevant in Barcelona because urban population grew at a sustained pace in various decades due to intense immigration inflows. When the urban spatial structure fails to behave as the backbone of population density distribution, population distribution can suffer from polarization problems. We conduct our empirical study using an urban monocentric framework, tracking the different spatial distribution patterns of the overall population and a few selected urban communities in light of the degree of attractiveness of the central business district (CBD). To this end, we construct an original database by each district in Barcelona from 1902 to 2011 and perform an econometric analysis. Our results reveal that the urban spatial structure continued to be a crucial determinant over time for shaping the overall population distribution in Barcelona and in almost all selected communities. However, its importance fluctuated over time, bottoming out in the 1950s–1960s, and whose resurgence was mostly driven by the political initiative to create a new centrality in the urban periphery. This policy reinforced the attractiveness of the CBD, resulting in the de-facto avoidance of urban polarization.

  • A Toolkit for Measuring Visitation in Third Places

      Abstract: This paper investigates the utility of information and communication technologies data for the measurement of visitation dynamics in third places across a large metropolitan university campus. A suite of seven metrics encompassing intensity, popularity, capacity, tempo, dwell, churn, and periodicity are employed to describe the visitation dynamics of each third place. Findings suggest that despite overt functional similarities, significant variability exists in the visitation dynamics of third places. Increasing pervasiveness of Wi-Fi networks in public spaces will improve the utility of social sensing data in recording the spatial and temporal dynamics of visitation.

  • Geodemographic Patterns of Meat Expenditure in Great Britain

      Abstract: The future of the meat industry will require the management of important trade-offs between economic, environmental and health aspects of both humans and animals. Understanding the patterns and trends of meat expenditure and consumption is crucial for assessing the current resilience of the system and for economic, planning, health and environmental applications. Here, we show how the technique of geodemographic classification, combined with fine scale expenditure estimates can be used to explore temporal and spatial patterns of meat expenditure in Great Britain between 2008 and 2017. Whilst the expenditure patterns of some food categories such as sausages remained relatively consistent, others such as lamb show a trend towards a reduced proportion of expenditure and increased inequality of purchases. Short term changes in expenditure patterns also occurred, potentially due to product specific price variability, price elasticities or zoonotic disease scare. Environmental attitudes, financial constraints and the prominence of communities who do not eat meat for religious or cultural reasons are likely to be driving the differences between geodemographic groups. The methodology and results could be a valuable tool for policy makers in the meat industry and beyond.

  • Using WeChat Data to Understand Residential Mobility of Mainland
           China-Born Migrants in Australia: A Segmented Assimilation Perspective

      Abstract: Successive waves of international migration have rendered the residential patterns of cities a variegated patchwork of ethnical communities and spaces. Various theories attempt to account for this diversity, with particular regard to the motivations and drivers that explain the settlement pathways of individuals and households vis-à-vis co-ethnic residents in their city. This study provides a refined understanding of how the settlement pathways of international migrants are shaped by their residential mobility after arrival in the destination city. Applying a ‘segmented assimilation’ model, we assert that the residential mobility of international migrants is accompanied by the formation of both ethnic concentration and deconcentration simultaneously, the extent of which is determined by migrant-specific characteristics and neighbourhood features. To illustrate this, we examine the residential mobility of Mainland China (MC)-born migrants in Australia since settlement. We analyse primary survey collected by WeChat, a mobile application, to track residential mobility over the course of individuals’ settlement in Australia, the principal motives behind each move, and the determinants of successive residential moves. The findings indicate that residential moves correspond to three phases — the first tied to certain migrant-specific characteristics and in particular English proficiency, the second tied to education/career and residential environment, and the third driven by ‘optimisation’, which reflects a desire to co-locate with friends and family, or to be closer to work and transport options. Segmented assimilation, as reflected by residential mobility, is stratified within migrant concentrations and distinguished by space, and this non-linear process is associated with a combination of personal preference, migrants’ socioeconomic characteristics, and residential features.

  • Spending and length of stay by tourists flying to the Canary Islands
           (Spain) using low-cost carriers

      Abstract: The AIM of this study is to examine and evaluate differences in expenditure and length of stay between tourists who use low-cost carriers and those who travel with full service providers. We consider the statistical dependence between these variables and propose a bivariate distribution that describes tourist expenditure (continuous variable) and length of stay (discrete variable) in terms of their conditional distributions. Covariates are included to reflect the factors that simultaneously affect both variables. In addition, an empirical analysis is made of data obtained by the Canary Islands Tourist Expenditure Survey. The results obtained show that our model achieves a reasonably good fit and that there are differences between LCC and FSC users regarding both expenditure and length of stay, in the use of nonhotel accommodation, as well as differences in expenditure in the case of repeated visits, and in the length of stay according to the visitors’ age, nationality and travel party size.

  • Understanding Spatial Variations in Accessibility to Banks Using Variable
           Floating Catchment Area Techniques

      Abstract: In response to changing consumer habits driven by the advance of online services and mobile apps, substantial reductions in the provision of bank branches have been widely documented over the last decade. Such closures have economic consequences for the sustainability of local businesses and the state of local high streets and may disproportionately affect demographic groups such as the elderly, those on low incomes, and those experiencing poor public transport and digital broadband connectivity. Geographical modelling can help to examine and better understand the impacts of bank closures, inform and guide future reductions, and contribute to impact assessment exercises. Many recent studies concerned with the spatial provision of services have adopted Floating Catchment Area techniques, exploring their use in a wide range of thematic and geographical contexts, but hitherto not to retail banking. This study documents the trialling of several approaches to the implementation of variable sized catchments within FCA tools in order to address previous concerns regarding the use of a fixed size catchment in study areas that encompass a wide range of settlement types. Findings suggest considerable potential in applying these tools to the banking sector, whilst also drawing attention to current limitations in the type of data available to differentiate settlement areas and guide parameter settings. However, with the future inclusion of supply-side measures such as branch opening hours and the incorporation of multi-modal travel, FCA tools can enhance existing impact assessment exercises and provide the public with greater confidence that the implications of bank branch closures have been fully considered.
