  • The Effect of Load Resistance and Coupling Coefficient on the Operational
           Stability of a Transcutaneous Inductive Power Transfer System with
           Capacitive Tuning

      Abstract: A system for transcutaneous inductive power transfer to implanted medical devices was studied. A class E power amplifier with dynamic capacitive tuning was used in the transmitting part of the system to maintain constant power output to an implanted medical device. The influence of the operation mode of the implanted device on the output power range of the transcutaneous inductive power transfer system and its operational stability under conditions of coil misalignment was studied. In all modes local maxima were observed near the upper boundary of the output power range. The maximum values were almost identical for all operation modes of the implanted medical device.

A model is proposed for the architecture of an interactive expert system. This includes a set of features for a contemporary medical algorithm (the Kittler algorithm) along with a knowledge base and a diagnosis evaluation score for the case under study.

  • A Hardware and Software System for Point-of-Care Testing of the Functional
           State of the Hemostasis System

      Abstract: A hardware and software system for point-of-care (bedside) testing of the functional state of the hemostasis system using the patient’s native blood has been developed. The block diagram of the system is presented and the main hardware and software solutions are described. A piezotransducer for low-frequency piezotromboelasto-graphy has been designed. The developed hardware and software system has been used for real-time monitoring of vascular platelet hemostasis in volunteers. The test has demonstrated a high degree of compliance with the standard methods for assessing the functional state of the hemostasis system. An advantage of the system is that it provides point-of-care testing of whole blood.

  • Assessment of the Time Characteristics of Walking Techniques Using a

      Abstract: This article addresses the development of an algorithm for assessing walking technique in patients in the post-operative rehabilitation period. A normalization plane is identified for measurement results obtained using a mobile information and measurement system for assessing the level of recovery of walking skills. Functions linking quantitative results with qualitative scale indicators for the time characteristics of walking techniques are presented.

  • Activation of Repair Processes in Patients with Bedsores Using Pulsed
           Radio-Frequency Currents

      Abstract: We present here the results of clinical studies of the treatment of bedsores by activation of repair processes in integument tissues using pulsed cold plasma discharges in patients in a chronic critical state. An experimental device for radio-frequency current treatment is described and exposure specifications are presented. The mechanism of activation by cold plasma discharges in the tissue electrolyte matrix is described. The results reliably show that the action of radio-frequency current pulses with optimum parameters reduces the in-patient treatment period by an average of seven days, or by 16%, compared with the control group.

  • A Thermometric Device for Monitoring Oscillations of Peripheral Blood
           Filling Based on a High-Pass Filter

      Abstract: A device for converting skin temperature oscillations into oscillations of blood filling of peripheral vessels has been developed. The operation of the device is based on the analogy between the thermal properties of the skin and the electrical properties of a low-pass filter. The device uses a Sallen−Key high-pass filter with a nonlinear amplitude and phase response reproducing thermal properties of the human skin. Oscillations in blood filling have been restored from the palm temperature oscillation signal measured at rest and during an occlusion test. The developed device holds promise for use in diagnostics of peripheral hemodynamics impairment within endothelial, neurogenic, and myogenic frequency ranges.

  • A Mathematical Model of a Thermoelectric Device for Extracting Foreign
           Objects from the Human Body by Freezing

      Abstract: A model of a thermoelectric device for extracting foreign bodies from the human body by freezing is presented. The model was implemented by solving the heat conduction problem, taking account of the phase transition of the substance and the thermophysical properties of the biological object, the foreign body, and the thermoelectric cooling module. Numerical modeling yielded relationships between the time to complete freezing of the moist sponge, which determines the time required to attach the foreign body to the probe, and the cooling capacity of the thermoelectric cooling module. The relationships were determined for different thicknesses of the sponge. The device was shown to be compatible with a standard thermoelectric cooling module with a refrigeration power of 5000-10,000 W/m2 corresponding to treatment durations of 112 to 28 s, respectively.

  • Evaluation of the Effect of Chopping Modulation of a Defibrillation Pulse
           on Its Energy Efficiency Based on the Hypothesis of Guaranteed
           Defibrillation

      Abstract: A comparative study of the energy efficiency of three known versions of chopping-modulated defibrillation pulses was carried out using the hypothesis of guaranteed defibrillation and the ten Tusscher−Panfilov 2006 cardiomyocyte model subjected to simulated fibrillation. The results of the study showed that the unmodulated equivalent of a chopping-modulated defibrillation pulse has lower threshold energy of guaranteed defibrillation than the chopping-modulated pulse itself. In addition, the ratio of the threshold energy of guaranteed defibrillation of the chopping-modulated pulse to the threshold energy of its unmodulated equivalent is approximately equal to the reciprocal of the modulation duty cycle. Based on this, it can be assumed that the use of chopping modulation for defibrillation pulse shaping leads to a decrease in its energy efficiency.

      Abstract: The Tachocomb collagen plate was compared to new local hemostatic agents based on sodium carboxymethyl cellulose with or without tranexamic acid developed by our team in collaboration with OOO Lintex (St. Petersburg). The effect of these agents on the hemostasis system was assessed. The study revealed significant differences in hemostasis parameters in all study groups.

  • DQE and eDQE of the KARS-BKS2 Digital Slot Scan X-Ray System

      Abstract: DQE and eDQE were evaluated for a slot scan X-ray system using four standard radiation qualities: RQA3, RQA5, RQA7, and RQA9. The results showed that the system under consideration, KARS-BKS2 fluorograph, provided maximal DQE(u,v) and eDQE(u′,v′) in the case of radiation quality RQA5 and a small focal point. At null spatial frequencies DQE(0) was greater than 40% and eDQE(0) was 35%.

  • Assessment of Human Gait Parameters Based on Accelerometry

      Abstract: A technique for assessing the biomechanical parameters of human gait has been developed. The technique can be used for rapid assessment of the state of the musculoskeletal system based on long-term accelerometer monitoring data. It is proposed to use the correlation coefficients of accelerometer signals recorded in a person walking at different paces to teach a neural network to isolate individual steps based on daily accelerography data. The developed rapid assessment technique allows characteristic signs of motor pathology to be detected by analyzing the gait parameters.

  • The Effect of the Operating Frequency on the Output Characteristics of a
           Wireless Transcutaneous Energy Transfer System Based on a Class E Power
           Amplifier with Tunable Capacitors

      Abstract: A wireless transcutaneous energy transfer system based on a class E power amplifier is considered. The system uses dynamic tuning of the amplifier capacitors to compensate for the effect of the misalignment of the transmitter and receiver coils. The system provides constant power output within the coil misalignment range. The output power is set within the stable power range. The boundaries of this range depend in a complicated way on the parameters of the system. The goal of this work was to study the effect of the operating frequency of the system on the width of the stable power range and the overall efficiency of the wireless transcutaneous energy transfer system. It was shown that an increase in the operating frequency allows the efficiency of the system to be improved and the stable power range to be expanded.

      Abstract: The bactericidal properties of a number of promising ceramic coatings obtained by magnetron sputtering have been determined. The coatings considered in this work hold much promise for protecting against common causative agents of acute purulent inflammation and surgical complications. The prospects of using the synthesized coatings in medical devices are estimated.

  • Noninvasive Measurement of the Glucose Level in Biological Media Based on
           Diffuse Reflectance Spectroscopy

      Abstract: A mathematical model of a system for measuring the glucose level in biological tissues with Lambertian layer interfaces is proposed. The model allows the glucose level in tissue to be calculated from the photodetector data. An experimental study showed a significant unevenness and asymmetry of the intensity distribution across the laser beam. These were taken into account in refining the model. An experimental study of the dependence of the recorded radiation intensity on the glucose level in the model object confirmed the results of the theoretical calculations. It was shown that the developed method can be used for measuring the glucose level in biological media.
