- Rapid qualitative and quantitative detection of Salmonella typhimurium
using a single-step dual photometric/fluorometric assay-

Abstract: A dual-signal photometric/fluorometric assay was established for rapid, qualitative, and quantitative detection of Salmonella typhimurium (S. typhimurium). This method was composed of two parts: (1) a single-step photometric (SSC) assay containing gold nanoparticles (AuNPs), poly-diallyldimethylammonium chloride (PDDA), and S. typhimurium-specific aptamer, and (2) a fluorescence (FL) assay containing carboxyl-modified CdSe/ZnS quantum dots (QDs-COOH). Users just need to drop samples contaminated with S. typhimurium into SSC assay; the apparent color change from red to blue can be observed in a short time (20 min). A smartphone app was developed to read the semiquantitative result. By subsequently adding one drop of FL assay into the reaction mixture, the generated fluorescence intensity reflected the concentration of S. typhimurium. The naked eye limit of detection (LOD) and fluorescent LOD were 103 cfu/mL and 10 cfu/mL, respectively. This method exhibited good selectivity. The reliability and practicability were verified by testing contaminated food, drinking water, and pets’ urine. Graphical abstract

- A label-free electrochemical impedimetric DNA biosensor for genetically
modified soybean detection based on gold carbon dots-

Abstract: A label-free electrochemical impedimetric biosensor was constructed based on gold carbon dots (GCDs) modified screen-printed carbon electrode for the detection of genetic modified (GM) soybean. The structure and property of GCDs were investigated. The GCDs can directly bind to single-stranded DNA probes through Au-thiol interaction and boost electric conductivity for the DNA sensor construction. The quantification of target DNA was monitored by the change of electron-transfer resistance (Ret) upon the DNA hybridization on sensor surface. Under the optimal conditions, the Ret response (vs. Ag reference electrode) increased with the logarithm of target DNA concentrations in a wide linear range of 1.0 × 10−7 − 1.0 × 10−13 M with a detection limit of 3.1 × 10−14 M (S/N = 3). It was also demonstrated that the proposed DNA sensor possessed high specificity for discriminating target DNA from mismatched sequences. Moreover, the developed biosensor was applied to detect SHZD32-1 in actual samples, and the results showed a good consistency with those obtained from the gel electrophoresis method. Compared with the previous reports for DNA detection, the label-free biosensor showed a comparatively simple platform due to elimination of complicated DNA labeling. Therefore, the proposed method showed great potential to be an alternative device for simple, sensitive, specific, and portable DNA sensor. Graphical abstract

- Ultrasensitive fluorescence detection of microRNA through DNA-induced
assembly of carbon dots on gold nanoparticles with no signal amplification

Abstract: An ultrasensitive fluorescence assay strategy on the basis of carbon dots (CDs) and cDNA-modified gold nanoparticles (AuNP-cDNA) was developed for the determination of microRNA-21 (miRNA-21) via internal filtering effect (IFE). Positively charged CDs (PEI-CDs), the fluorophores in IFE, were synthesized via a hydrothermal method using polyethyleneimine (PEI) as surface ligand. The maximum emission wavelength is located at 500 nm under the excitation of 410 nm. AuNPs, the absorbers, were modified with single-stranded DNA (cDNA), which is completely complementary to miRNA-21. The fluorescence of PEI-CDs is quenched due to the assembly of PEI-CDs and AuNPs-cDNA. In the presence of miRNA-21, the hybridization between miRNA-21 and cDNA causes the release of PEI-CDs and the recovery of fluorescence intensity.The fluorescence recovery degree is linearly correlated with the logarithm of miRNA-21 concentration in the range of 1–1000 fM. This method can be applied to determine miRNA-21 in real serum samples, and the detection results are in well agreement with those of qRT-PCR. The determination of miRNA-21 spiked into diluted human serum samples displays satisfactory recovery within the range 88.44–112.7%, which confirmed the reliability for miRNAs detection in real samples. - Photonic crystal sensor for melamine based on magnetic molecularly
imprinted nanoparticles self-assembled with an amphiphilic random

Abstract: Magnetic molecularly imprinted nanoparticles (MMINPs) were obtained with a one-step process through miniemulsion self-assembly using an amphiphilic random copolymer as both an emulsifier and MMINP coating, oleic acid–modified magnetite nanoparticles as magnetic cores, and melamine (MEL) as the template molecule. MMINPs were assembled under an external magnetic field to construct photonic crystal (PC) sensor for naked-eye detection of MEL. The MMINPs were characterized by FT-IR, TEM, TGA, and VSM. The analytical performances of the magnetic molecularly imprinted PC sensor for MEL (MEL-MMIPCs) were investigated with respect to sensitivity, response time, selectivity, and stability. As the MEL concentration increases from 1.0 to 1.0 × 106 μg/l, the reflection wavelength of MEL-MMIPCs shifted from 497 to 709 nm, and was linear with the logarithm of MEL concentration in this range. The detection limit was 0.21 μg/l (S/N = 3) and response time was within 30 s. The MEL-MMIPC sensor had an imprinting factor of 5.09, and selectivity factors for the analogs cyanuric acid and atrazine were 8.76 and 5.75, respectively, indicating the high sensitivity and selectivity. After 10 cycles of elution/response, MEL-MMIPCs still had a good ability to recognize MEL. Graphical abstract

Abstract: A competitive electrochemiluminescence immunoassay was established based on the isoluminol-H2O2 (ABEI-H2O2) system catalyzed by cobalt hydroxide (Co(OH)2) to detect florfenicol residues in food. First , ultra-thin two-dimensional Co(OH)2 nanosheets were used as the catalyst of ABEI-H2O2 system, and excellent catalytic effects were acquired by catalytic decomposition of hydrogen peroxide with cobalt ions. Then, bimetal PdAg (Pd/Ag) alloy nanoparticles were used as a bridge to connect ABEI and antibody due to their good biocompatibility; Pd/Ag alloy nanoparticles also had a catalytic effect to further amplify the ECL signal in the system due to the synergistic catalytic effect of the bimetal. A competitive immunoassay strategy was used to detect florfenicol, where the florfenicol in the sample will compete with the antibody for the limited binding sites on the coating antigen. The ECL immunosensor for florfenicol detection shows high sensitivity, with a linear range from 10−4 to 102 ng mL−1, and a detection limit of 3.1 × 10−5 ng mL−1, where the scan potential was varied from 0 to 0.6 V vs Ag/AgCl . This work was the first to use Co(OH)2 nanosheets and bimetal PdAg catalytic signal amplification methods to design the sensor, which provides a novel, convenient and reliable strategy for ultra-sensitive detection of florfenicol, and other biological small molecules. - A ratiometric electrochemical DNA-biosensor for detection of miR-141

Abstract: A sensitive biosensor for the detection of miR-141 has been constructed. The DNA-biosensor is prepared by first immobilizing the thiolated methylene blue-labeled hairpin capture probe (MB-HCP) on two-layer nanocomposite film graphene oxide-chitosan@ polyvinylpyrrolidone-gold nanourchin modified glassy carbon electrode. We used the hematoxylin as an electrochemical auxiliary indicator in the second stage to recognize DNA hybridization via the square wave voltammetry (SWV) responses that record the accumulated hematoxylin on electrode surfaces. The morphology and chemical composition of nanocomposite was characterized using TEM, FE-SEM, and FT-IR techniques. The preparation stages of the DNA-biosensor were screened by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and cyclic voltammetry. The proposed DNA-biosensor can distinguish miR-141 from a non-complementary and mismatch sequence. A detection limit of 0.94 fM and a linear range of 2.0 –5.0 × 105 fM were obtained using SWV for miR-141 detection. The working potential for methylene blue and hematoxylin was -0.28 and + 0.15 V vs. Ag/AgCl, respectively. The developed biosensor can be successfully used in the early detection of non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) by directly measuring miR-141 in human plasma samples. This novel DNA-biosensor is of promise in early sensitive clinical diagnosis of cancers with miR-141 as its biomarker. Graphical abstract

Abstract: A unique approach based on Molecular Immobilization and Resonant Raman Amplification by Complex-Loaded Enhancers (MIRRACLE) on copper (II)–chitosan–modified SERS-active metallic nanostructured substrates is proposed for sensitive and rapid determination of the catecholamines (CA) dopamine, norepinephrine, and epinephrine. The ternary (CA)2Cu(4AAP)2 complexes were characterized by the appearance of new absorbance bands at 555, 600, and 500 nm for dopamine, norepinephrine, and epinephrine, respectively. The new absorbance band matched with a broad surface plasmon resonance band of utilized silver nanoparticles: 450–600 nm, and 633 excitation wavelength. We observed enhancement factors up to 3.6·106 due to the additional resonant enhancement. The multiplexing capabilities of quantitative spectral unmixing for Raman spectra of a group of CAs, which differ by only either hydroxy or methyl group, at the fingerprint region were successfully demonstrated with the direct classic least squares model. The achieved nM limits of detection with only 1.5 mW laser power and analysis of spiked human blood plasma samples proved the possibility of the multiplex determination of the catecholamines at the level of reference concentrations in the blood of healthy people as well as promise for the future facilitation in the precision diagnosis of neuroendocrine tumors and neurodegenerative diseases. - Internal heating method of loop-mediated isothermal amplification for

Abstract: Loop-mediated isothermal amplification (LAMP) is a promising diagnostic tool for genetic amplification, which is known for its rapid process, simple operation, high amplification efficiency, and excellent sensitivity. However, most of the existing heating methods are external for completion of molecular amplification with possibility of contamination of specimens. The present research provided an internal heating method for LAMP using magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs), which is called nano-LAMP. Near-infrared light with an excitation wavelength of 808 nm was employed as the heating source; hydroxy naphthol blue (HNB) was used as an indicator to conduct methodological research. We demonstrate that the best temperature was controlled at a working power of 2 W and 4.8 µg/µL concentration of nanoparticles. The lowest limit for the detection of HPV by the nano-LAMP method is 102 copies/mL, which was confirmed by a gel electrophoresis assay. In the feasibility investigation of validated clinical samples, all 10 positive HPV-6 specimens amplified by nano-LAMP were consistent with conventional LAMP methods. Therefore, the nano-LAMP detection method using internal heating of MNPs may bring a new vision to the exploration of thermostatic detection in the future. Graphical abstract

- Colloidal synthesis of perovskite-type lanthanum aluminate incorporated
graphene oxide composites: Electrochemical detection of nitrite in meat

Abstract: A novel electrochemical method has been developed for determination of nitrite using La-based perovskite-type lanthanum aluminate nanorod-incorporated graphene oxide nanosheets (LaAlO3@GO). Morphological and structural analyses of the prepared perovskite-type electrocatalyst, with and without a glassy carbon electrode (GCE) surface, were performed using various techniques, including transmission electron microscopy, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, X-ray diffractometry, Raman spectroscopy, and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. Under optimal conditions, the LaAlO3@GO composite-modified GCE (LaAlO3@GO/GCE) exhibited excellent electrocatalytic performance toward the electrooxidation of nitrite (pH = 7.0), with a significant increase in anodic peak currents compared with the bare GCE. Using amperometry, the fabricated sensor exhibited a wide nitrite determination range from 0.01 to 1540.5 µM, with a detection limit of 0.0041 µM. Notably, the proposed LaAlO3@GO/GCE electrode demonstrated a good nitrite detection performance in different meat and water samples. In addition, the LaAlO3@GO/GCE electrode displayed excellent selectivity, repeatability, reproducibility, storage, and operational stability toward nitrite detection. Graphical abstract

- Development of an optical immunoassay based on peroxidase-mimicking
Prussian blue nanoparticles and a label-free electrochemical immunosensor
for accurate and sensitive quantification of milk species adulteration-

Abstract: In contrast to reported enzyme-based immunoassays, an enzyme-free immunoassay (optical and electrochemical) is presented here for the first time that can be used as point-of-need detection bioplatforms of bovine IgG as goat milk adulterant. In the first format, Prussian blue nanoparticles (PBNPs) were used as antibody catalytic labels in a competitive colorimetric microplate immunoassay. Absorbance measurement was performed photometrically at 450 nm. After in-depth optimization, excellent sensitivity was achieved (0.01% cow/goat volume ratio), which is 100 times lower than the limit allowed by the European legislation (EL) (1% v/v), thanks to the high catalytic activity of PBNPs compared with natural peroxidase. Moreover, the antibody-PBNPs bioconjugates showed excellent stability over 4 weeks (> 94% of the initial response) confirming the successful anchoring of the antibodies to the surface of the PBNPs. On the other hand, a label-free voltammetric immunoassay for the detection of bovine IgG was developed. The sensing principle was based on the hindrance of charge transfer between ferri-ferrocyanide redox couple and the screen-printed gold electrodes modified with bovine IgG antibody. Cyclic voltammetry (CV) and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) were used to characterize the step-by-step modification of the electrode surface. Under optimal conditions, this single-step electrochemical analysis achieved a high sensitivity of 0.1% (cow/goat) when monitoring the ferrocyanide oxidation at + 0.092 V (vs. Ag/AgCl) using differential pulse voltammetry (DPV). The selectivity of the developed immunoassays was evaluated for different species of milk of similar composition, and both immunoassays exhibited a selective response only to bovine IgG. Unlike conventional immunoassays, the developed enzyme-free immunoassays have many attractive features for the detection of milk adulteration, whether they are used in quality control laboratories for routine milk analysis (optical immunoassay) or at on-site checkpoints (electrochemical immunoassay) using wireless electrochemical detectors. The sensors provide high sensitivity (≤ 0.1%), excellent precision (RSD < 6%), low cost (no enzyme is required) and ease of operation, including handling of milk samples. Graphical abstract

Abstract: S, N co-doped graphene quantum dot (S, N-GQD) materials have been composited via a one-pot pattern and used as photosensitive materials to construct a label-free photoelectrochemical (PEC) sensor. The PEC experiments show an enhanced photocurrent response toward Bisphenol A (BPA) sensing due to the increased charge transfer rate and the enhanced absorption of visible light. Compared with dark conditions, the photocurrent signal (− 0.2 V vs. SCE) is greatly increased because of the effective oxidation of BPA by photogenerated holes and the rapid electron transfer of S, N-GQDs on the PEC sensing platform. Under optimal conditions linear current response to BPA is in two ranges of 0.12–5 µM and 5–40 µM. The limit of detection is 0.04 µM (S/N = 3). The designed sensor has enduring stability and admirable interference immunity. It provides an alternative approach for BPA determination in real samples with recoveries of 99.3–103% and RSD of 2.0–4.1%. Graphical abstract

Abstract: A specific surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) assay for dopamine (DA) based on an azo derivatization reaction is proposed for the first time by preparation of p-aminothiophenol (PATP)-modified composite SERS substrate, composed of metal–organic framework (MIL-101) decorated with Au and Ag nanoparticles. As the result, the SERS method for detection of the azo reaction between PATP and DA exhibits superior sensitivity, selectivity, and stability. A reasonable linearity in the range 10−6 to 10−10 mol∙L−1 is achieved, and the limit of detection is 1.2 × 10−12 mol∙L−1. The reactive SERS assay is free from interference in complex physiological fluid. The feasibility of the proposed SERS method for the detection of DA levels in fetal bovine serum (FBS) samples and human serum samples is validated by HPLC–MS methods, displaying promising application potential in early disease diagnosis. multiplexed simultaneous measurement of pH, nitrates, and phosphates-

Abstract: Concerns for agri-food safety and environmental management require development of simple to use and cost- and time-effective multiplex sensors for point-of-need (PON) chemical analytics by public end-user. Simultaneous detection of nitrates, phosphates, and pH is of importance in soil and water analysis, agriculture, and food quality assessment. This article demonstrates a suite of stainless steel microneedle electrochemical sensors for multiplexed measurement of pH, nitrate, and phosphate using faradaic capacitance derived from cyclic voltammetry as the mode of detection. The multi-target microneedle sensors were fabricated by layer-by-layer (LbL) assembly in a stainless steel hypodermic microneedle substrate. For nitrate sensing, the stainless steel was coated with carbon nanotube/cellulose nanocrystal (CNT)/CNC) decorated with silver nanoparticles (Ag). For pH measurement, the polyaniline (pANI) was coated onto the CNT/CNC@Ag film, while for phosphate detection, the CNT/CNC/Ag @pANI microneedle was further decorated with ammonium molybdenum tetrahydrate (AMT). The microelectrode platforms were characterized by FTIR, Raman, and microscopic techniques. The nitrate- and phosphate-based microneedle electrochemical sensors had excellent selectivity and sensitivity, with a determined limit of detection (LOD) of 0.008 mM and 0.007 mM, respectively. The pH microneedle sensor was responsive to pH in the linear range of 3–10. The three microneedle sensors yielded repeatable results, with a precision ranging from 4.0 to 7.5% RSD over the concentration ranges tested. The inexpensive (~ 1 $ CAD) microneedle sensors were successfully verified for use in quantification of nitrate, pH, and phosphate in brewed black coffee as a real sample. As such, the microneedle sensors are economical devices and show great promise as robust platforms for PON precision chemical analytics. Graphical abstract

Abstract: Novel cube-like transition metal oxide embedded on graphitic carbon nitride (MCO@GCN) formed a hybrid composite via hydrothermal assisted sonochemical synthesis. The synthesized composite was examined with various physical characterizations such as morphological SEM, EDX, XRD, and FT-IR spectroscopy. The electrocatalytic activity of MCO@GCN composite was further investigated when used to modify a glassy carbon electrode (GCE). The electrochemical sensor was investigated using modified MCO@GCN/GCE towards environmental pollutant 2,4,6-trichlorophenol (2,4,6-TCP) detection with at a potential of (+ 0.654 V vs Ag/AgCl) in pH-7. The structural features have favored a high charge transfer ratio with excellent conductivity which showed a low detection limit (LOD) of 0.0068 μM and sensitivity of 23.57 μA·μM−1·cm−2 comprising a wide linear working range of 0.01–1720 μM by using differential pulse voltammetry. Besides, the MCO@GCN/GCE displayed excellent selectivity , repeatability, reproducibility, storage, and operational stability. Notably, the proposed MCO@GCN/GCE was validated with different environmental samples (tap, river, and industrial water) with RSD 0.62–2.86% and 96.51–99.66% (n = 3) recovery. Graphical abstract

- 3D printed microfluidic device for automated, pressure-driven,
valve-injected microchip electrophoresis of preterm birth biomarkers-

Abstract: A 3D printed, automated, pressure-driven injection microfluidic system for microchip electrophoresis (µCE) of preterm birth (PTB)-related peptides and proteins has been developed. Functional microvalves were formed, either with a membrane thickness of 5 µm and a layer exposure time of 450 ms or with a membrane thickness of 10 µm and layer exposure times of 300–350 ms. These valves allowed for control of fluid flow in device microchannels during sample injection for µCE separation. Device design and µCE conditions using fluorescently labeled amino acids were optimized. A sample injection time of 0.5 s and a separation voltage of 450 V (460 V/cm) yielded the best separation efficiency and resolution. We demonstrated the first µCE separation with pressure-driven injection in a 3D printed microfluidic device using fluorescently labeled PTB biomarkers and 532 nm laser excitation. Detection limits for two PTB biomarkers, peptide 1 and peptide 2, for an injection time of 1.5 s were 400 pM and 15 nM, respectively, and the linear detection range for peptide 2 was 50–400 nM. This 3D printed microfluidic system holds promise for future integration of on-chip sample preparation processes with µCE, offering promising possibilities for PTB risk assessment. Graphical abstract

- Highly dispersive AuNCs/ChOx@ZIF-8/PEI nanocomplexes for fluorescent
detection of cholesterol in human serum-

Abstract: Gold nanoclusters (AuNCs) are widely used in the fluorescence detection of biomolecules in human serum due to their good fluorescence properties, low toxicity, and better biocompatibility. However, the weak fluorescence intensity of AuNCs limits the fluorescence detection of molecules within a wide concentration range. It is reported that coating AuNCs in ZIF-8 with adjustable pore size can effectively improve the fluorescence intensity of AuNCs and broaden the detection range. And the AuNCs wrapped in the gaps of ZIF-8 can prevent the fluorescence quenching caused by the aggregation of AuNCs. However, ZIF-8 has high crystallinity, poor dispersion, and easy deposition, which reduces the fluorescence stability of the detection system and affects the detection. Based on the above research, the highly hydrophilic polymer PEI was modified to the surface of ZIF-8, and a kind of nanocomposite material AuNCs/ChOx@ZIF-8/PEI was obtained by co-encapsulating AuNCs prepared with glutathione as a ligand and cholesterol oxidase (ChOx) into ZIF-8 modified with PEI. The composite material emits strong red light at 650 nm under the excitation of 395-nm light, and the system can sensitively detect cholesterol (Chol) in human serum. Compared with other materials, the PEI-modified composite has better solubility and stability, so the detection effect of Chol is better. Encapsulation of ChOx in the ZIF-8 shell can protect the enzyme and increase the local concentration of ChOx, thereby speeding up the reaction rate. Compared with free AuNCs/ChOx, the quenching rate of AuNCs/ChOx@ZIF-8/PEI system is doubled. Secondly, the addition of Fe2+ to the detection process results in higher quenching rate and detection sensitivity. The system can detect Chol in the concentration range 0.1–2.4 μM, with a detection limit of 0.073 μM. The determination is a fast and sensitive strategy. In addition, the practicability of this assay in the detection of Chol in human serum has been verified. Abstract: The construction of a rapid and easy immunofluorescence bioassay for SARS-CoV-2 detection is described. We report for the first time a novel one-pot synthetic approach for simultaneous photoinduced step-growth polymerization of pyrene (Py) and ring-opening polymerization of ε-caprolactone (PCL) to produce a graft fluorescent copolymer PPy-g-PCL that was conjugated to SARS-CoV-2-specific antibodies using EDC/NHS chemistry. The synthesis steps and conjugation products were fully characterized using standard spectral analysis. Next, the PPy-g-PCL was used for the construction of a dot-blot assay which was calibrated for applications to human nasopharyngeal samples. The analytical features of the proposed sensor showed a detection range of 6.03–8.7 LOG viral copy mL−1 (Ct Scores: 8–25), the limit of detection (LOD), and quantification (LOQ) of 1.84 and 6.16 LOG viral copy mL−1, respectively. The repeatability and reproducibility of the platform had a coefficient of variation (CV) ranging between 1.2 and 5.9%. The fluorescence-based dot-blot assay was tested with human samples. Significant differences were observed between the fluorescence intensity of the negative and positive samples, with an overall correct response of 93.33%. The assay demonstrated a high correlation with RT-PCR data. This strategy opens new insights into simplified synthesis procedures of the reporter molecules and their high potential sensing and diagnosis applications. Graphical abstract

Abstract: Three-dimensional (3D) cobalt molybdate (CoMoO4) hierarchical nanoflake arrays on pencil graphite electrode (PGE) (CoMoO4/PGE) are actualized via one-pot hydrothermal technique. The morphological features comprehend that the CoMoO4 nanoflake arrays expose the 3D, open, porous, and interconnected network architectures on PGE. The formation and growth mechanisms of CoMoO4 nanostructures on PGE are supported with different structural and morphological characterizations. The constructed CoMoO4/PGE is operated as an electrocatalytic probe in enzyme-less electrochemical glucose sensor (ELEGS), confronting the impairments of cost- and time-obsessed conventional electrode polishing and catalyst amendment progressions and obliged the employment of a non-conducting binder. The wide-opened interior and exterior architectures of CoMoO4 nanoflake arrays escalate the glucose utilization efficacy, whilst the intertwined nanoflakes and graphitic carbon layers, respectively, of CoMoO4 and PGE articulate the continual electron mobility and catalytically active channels of CoMoO4/PGE. It jointly escalates the ELEGS concerts of CoMoO4/PGE including high sensitivity (1613 μA mM−1 cm−2), wide linear glucose range (0.0003–10 mM), and low detection limit (0.12 µM) at a working potential of 0.65 V (vs. Ag/AgCl) together with the good recovery in human serum. Thus, the fabricated CoMoO4/PGE extends exclusive virtues of modest electrode production, virtuous affinity, swift response, and excellent sensitivity and selectivity, exposing innovative prospects to reconnoitring the economically viable ELEGSs with binder-free, affordable cost, and expansible 3D electrocatalytic probes. Abstract: A promising sensing platform was constructed based on an electrochemically reduced graphene oxide (ErGO)/copper metal–organic framework (Cu-MOF)/platinum nanoparticles (ErGO/Cu-MOF/PtNPs) modified glassy carbon electrode for the detection of tetracycline. The ErGO/Cu-MOF/PtNPs composite electrode possessed an excellent electrochemical performance to tetracycline detection mainly due to the synergistic effect of ErGO, Cu-MOF and PtNPs. The electrochemical kinetics and catalytical mechanism of tetracycline were systematically studied, showing that tetracycline's electrocatalytic oxidation reaction was an absorption-controlled two-step process involving two electrons and one proton transfer, respectively. Low concentration of tetracycline was detected by amperometry with the a linear range of 1 ~ 200 μM (R2 = 0.9900) and a detection limit of 0.03 μM (S/R = 3). The proposed sensor was successfully applied to the detection of tetracycline in the real water samples with recoveries of 93.5% ~ 106%, and relative standard deviations (RSD) of 4.65% ~ 5.21% (n = 3). Furthermore, acceptable stability, repeatability and reproducibility were verified for continuous determination of tetracycline under optimized conditions. The ErGO/Cu-MOF/PtNPs composite electrode also demonstrated better anti-interference performance compared to other types of antibiotics than that of similar structural tetracyclines. Therefore, the proposed ErGO/Cu-MOF/PtNPs composites might provide a potential sensing platform for detecting analogous tetracyclines or total tetracyclines in the environment. Graphical abstract

Abstract: A sepiolite/chitosan/silver nanoparticles (Sep/CTs/AgNPs) membrane substrate has been developed for the fast separation, enrichment, and surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) determination of sulfamethoxazole all-in-one. The Sep/CTs/AgNPs membrane substrate possessed the ability of rapid separation and enrichment to simplify the process for pretreatment and improve the efficiency of analysis. The grown AgNPs can provide abundant hot spots and plasmonic areas to amplify the Raman signals of target molecules effectively. The membrane substrate exhibited good stability with relative standard deviations of 5.8% and 7.1% to same batch and different batches membrane substrate, respectively, by detecting sulfamethoxazole. The SERS method based on Sep/CTs/AgNPs membrane substrate was used for the determination of sulfamethoxazole with a linear range of 0.05–2.0 mg/L, and the limit of detection was 0.020 mg/L. The established SERS method was finally applied to the quantification of sulfamethoxazole in animal-derived food samples. Sulfamethoxazole was actually found in crucian sample with 12.4 μg/kg, and the result was confirmed by a high-performance liquid chromatography method with relative error of 5.3%. The whole process of analysis can be finished within 25 min with recoveries of 89.3–102.2%. The SERS method based on Sep/CTs/AgNPs membrane substrate provided an integrated strategy for rapid and accurate SERS analysis in food safety issues. Graphical abstract
