  • Optimization of electrocoagulation condition for the removal of As(V) ions
           from aqueous media

    • Authors: Amarsanaa Altangerel, Damdin Nomin-Erdene, Davaasambuu Sarangerel
      Pages: 1 - 9
Abstract: In recent years, the arsenic content of groundwater and soil due to the mining processes and natural and/or anthropogenic sources exceeds the permissible level, leading to adverse effects on human health and the ecosystem. The paper provides the optimized condition for the arsenic removal from the aqueous media using electrocoagulation, which is no additional reagents/chemicals, in situ generation of coagulants continuously, low energy consumption. The optimal conditions were found to be as follows: pH 7, electrolyte concentration NaCl 0.5 g L-1, current density 20 mA cm-2, and operational time 20 minutes, initial concentration of arsenic 50 mg L-1. Under the optimal condition, the maximum removal efficiency was 99.6%. Generally, the experimental results showed that the removal efficiency of As(V) from the aqueous medium was higher than 95% at pH = 4-8 ranges, 90% at the electrolyte concentration in the range of 0.25 g L-1 to 0.75 g L-1 , and 96% at the current density in the range of 15
mA cm-2 - 60 mA cm-2 respectively. Considering the variation of oxidation-reduction potential and pH during the electrocoagulation and FTIR spectra of solid residue, we found that As(V) was removed through the chemical precipitation (FeAsO4) and adsorption (Fe(OH)3×HAsO42-). • Synthetic fatty acids from solid paraffin of Tsagaan-Els oil deposit

    • Authors: Byambasuren Gantsetseg, Bayanmunkh Myagmargerel, Murneren Tuya, Bayasgalan Khulan, Batchuluun Khongorzul
      Pages: 10 - 16
Abstract: In this work, fatty acids, the raw materials for detergents, were obtained by the oxidation reaction of solid paraffin
extracted from the Tsagaan-Els petroleum deposit of Mongolia. The oil fraction distilled from the crude oil at 350-450°C was 20.06 mass %, and the solid paraffin was extracted from the oil fraction by complexation with urea with a yield of 34.28 %. Extracted solid paraffin contained hydrocarbons of C17-C34 and was unimodal in molecular mass distribution. Optimal conditions for the oxidation reaction of solid paraffin extracted from the oil fraction were determined by mathematical modeling depending on various reaction parameters and found to be 0.6 l/min for catalyst amount and 0.1 mass % (from paraffin) for oxygen flow. The oxidation reaction of solid paraffin extracted from the Tsagaan-Els petroleum deposit resulted in a fraction of synthetic fatty acid with a yield of 44.09
mass %. Infrared spectroscopic analysis of the synthetic fatty acids revealed that oxygen-containing compounds formed from the reaction were predominantly monocarboxylic acids and GC-MS studies have shown that these fatty acids are synthetic fatty acids containing carbon atoms of C7-C26. We report that it is possible to oxidize the solid paraffin of petroleum in our country to produce synthetic fatty acids, which are widely used in detergent production. • Some results of studies on leaching of toxic elements in Asgat
           polymetallic concentrate

    • Authors: Garnaad Ariunaa, Gunchin Burmaa, Shirchinnyamjil Nyamdelger, Batnasan Altansukh, Muratbek Nazgul, Tumen-Ulzii Narangarav
      Pages: 17 - 25
Abstract: Extended ICP-OES and AAS analysis of floated polysulphide concentrate from the Asgat polymetallic ore revealed that the concentrate contains 0.91% of silver, 18.2% of copper, 19.4% antimony, 2.03% arsenic and 1.6% of bismuth together with other elements. The prevailing minerals in the concentrate are tetrahedrite, bismuthinite, chalcopyrite, arsenopyrite and pyrite and non-ore minerals i.e. siderite, muscovite and quartz. The content of above minerals was estimated by the X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) analysis. An optimum condition for antimony leaching from the tetrahedrite by alkaline-sulphide solution was studied comprehensively. In optimized condition, the 99.25% of Sb, 89.0% of As and 44.50% of Bi were dissolved from the concentrate into the alkaline-sulphide solution, successfully. The solid residue contains non-ore sulphide minerals as well as chalcopyrite (CuFeS2), covellite (CuS), chalcocite (Cu2S), pyrite (FeS) and argentite (Ag2S). Chalcopyrite and pyrite are not soluble in alkaline-sulphide solution. The covellite and chalcocite are the product of tetrahedrite decomposition. The activation energy for antimony leaching from the tetrahedrite by alkaline-sulphide solution was calculated as 81.43kJ/mol that indicates the leaching process occurred by chemical reaction. • Effect of inherent minerals on Na catalyzed gasification activity of
           Tavantolgoi coal

    • Authors: Tuvdendorj Baasanjargal, Byamba Bum-Ayush, Byambajav Enkhsaruul
      Pages: 26 - 32
Abstract: Steam gasification of weathered (deposit overlay) and energy (depth of ≥300 m) coal samples of Tavantolgoi deposit situated in Tsogttsetsii soum, Umnugovi aimag were performed in this study. Relationship between coal inherent minerals and catalysts (Fe, Na, binary Fe-Na) in the gasification was investigated in a flow of Ar and steam (1:1) mixture with a rate of 200ml/min at temperature of 800°C for 1h using a fixed bed stainless reactor. Conversion of organic matter was 81.8% for the weathered coal sample, and 21.5% for the energy coal sample during non-catalytic gasification of Tavantolgoi coal. Large amount of inherent calcium minerals included in the weathered coal showed a catalytic effect on gasification activity. However, these minerals reacted actively with sodium catalysts (Na or binary Na-Fe) in stages of pyrolysis and gasification, consequently the catalysts lost their activities. Moreover, Fe ore did not have influence of catalyst in steam gasification of both weathered and energy coal samples. Moreover, an inherent Ca content of the energy coal sample was 10 times smaller than that of weathered coal sample. Gasification activity of the energy coal increased significantly with Na catalyst, and the amount of syngas increased 4.6 times compared to that evolved in noncatalytic gasification of the energy coal. • Water quality analysis of tuul river around the Ulaanbaatar city area

    • Authors: Battulga Daariimaa, Gombosuren Odontuya, Andarai Tsiiregzen, Dolgorjav Oyuntsetseg, Amarjargal Ichinnorov, Ganpurev Dulamsuren, Zolboot Buyanjargal, Otgonbaatar Khureldavaa, Badgaa Amarsanaa
      Pages: 33 - 39
Abstract: This study purposed to evaluate the water quality of 10 points located between the Terelj national park and the Lun soum in Tuv province along the Tuul River, depending on assessing detailed Physico-chemical and seasonal (except than winter) pollution indicators. The chemical data of water samples from the Tuul River illustrated the water type from neutral to slightly alkaline and belonged to the HCO3-- Ca2+; HCO3-, SO42--Na+ and HCO3-- Ca2+, Mg2+. The point of Terelj or, moreover, starting points water belongs to excellent water, but water mineralization in the mid of Ulaanbaatar city increased up to 1.2 times. However, mineralization, anions and cations of T6 mixed with wastewater from the Central Wastewater Treatment Plant (CWTP) increased significantly. These parameters decreased along the downstream river at T9, T10 points in the zone of Lun soum. As nutritional polluting constituents like NH4-N, NO2-N, PO4-P, COD concentrations met the permissibility of National Standard (MNS 4586:98) requirements at T1-T5 points in Terelj and Ulaanbaatar city. On the contrary, ranges are overrated by permissible concentration of MNS 4586:98 at T6 point mixed with wastewater from CWTP. In T9, T10 points case, nutritional pollution is being decreased gradually along the river, but natural self-treatment did not process completely. Water quality index (WQI) of Terelj and mid of the city (T1-T5 points) designated as ‘excellent’ and ‘good’ (I-II), inappropriately at the point T6 appointed as ‘very poor’ to ‘unsuitable’ water (IV-V) categories. Interestingly, T7 to T10 issues contributed as ‘poor’ to ‘very poor’ water (III-IV) categories.

Abstract: As the world's population grows, so do the many infectious and non-communicable diseases that follow, and there is an urgent need to find ways to treat and cure them. In particular, it is very important to study low-toxic, highly therapeutic substances from natural raw materials such as plants, animals and microorganisms and introduce them for use as medicines and food supplements. In our study, we studied the chemical composition of Cuscuta chinensis grown in Mongolia and obtained a group of extracts to determine the DPPH free radical inhibitory activity and calculated the IC50 value for hexane extract 32.09 μg/ml, chloroform extract 31.35 μg/ml, ethyl acetate extract 7.23 μg/ml, n-butanol extract 53.35 μg/ml, aqueous extract 84.46 μg/ml, and chloroform extract S.aureus, P.aeruginosa, B.subtilis, ethyl-acetate extract S.aureus, P.aeruginosa, B.subtilis, E.faecalis were active in inhibiting the growth of bacteria. Also evaluated toxicity of extracts for Brine shrimp lethality assay.
