  • Study results of the acquired data on Tribulus terristris L. extraction
           technology parameters

      Abstract: It has been noted in the Mongolian traditional medicine sources that aerial parts, fruits and seeds of the Tribulus terestris L. plant are beneficial for renal diseases and improvement of renal function. In the current marketplace, herbal medicinal products for sexual potency and their production have been developing rapidly. Therefore, with the goal of appropriate usage of national resources and to provide a substitute for the imported products, a technological study on the extraction of liquid extracts from the upper part of the Tribulus terrestris L. plant was carried out. In the first part of this herbal tablet development technology research the appropriate solvent concentrations for the extraction from the plant raw materials, which are the main technological indicators, were determined by the total saponin concentrations in the plant by spectrophotometric method. As a result of the study the ideal extracellular solvent for extraction was determined, a 70% ethanol and the total saponin content was 15.53 mg/ml or 0.77%.   • Diterpenoid alkaloids from Aconitum and Delphinum species

      Abstract: Since 1986 we started investigating diterpene alkaloids from Aconitum and Delphinum species in Mongolia. Alkaloid composition of some 12 species of Aconitum and Delphinum of Ranunculaceae family and 63 individual compounds were isolated and identified. Among them 9 were newly found naturally-occurring compounds and structure of these alkaloids were elucidated completely. High resolution Mass-spectrometry, 1H and 13C NMR, 2D NMR techniques such as COSY, HMQC, HMBC were employed to elucidate structure of new compounds. Structure of altaconitine was elucidated and confirmed by applying X-ray crystallographic analysis in addition to above- mentioned techniques. As a result of our long-term chemical in-vestigation of plant species of Mongolia, we have observed and established that secondary metabolites such as alkaloids, coumarins, lignans and xanthones accumulate in more oxidized form in plant species grown in Mongolia. This principle is also demonstrated in the structure of diterpenoid alkaloids isolated from plants of Ranunculaceae family grown in Mongolia. As can be seen from alkaloids 11-acetyl-1, 19-epoxydenudatine and turpelline each contain 4 oxygen atoms, which is more oxygen atoms than in commonly-occurring C-20 diterpenoid alkaloids. Except turpelline no other C-20 alkaloid containing four hydroxyl groups was found in nature. Altaconitine is a newly discovered alkaloid which contains functional groups with highest number of oxygen atoms among C-19 diterpenoid alkaloids. Ring “A” in altaconitine structure is substituted at C-1, C-2 and C-3 positions with 2, 3-transdiol system, making altaconitine a unique structure found in nature.   • Alkaloids from some Mongolian medicinal plants

      Abstract: The detailed phytochemical study of Mongolian medicinal plants started in 1973, when a Department for a study of physiologically active substances chemistry was established in the Institute of Chemistry, Mongolian Academy of Sciences. We had studied alkaloids of 30 medicinal plant species grown in Mongolia for the first time. According to the study, 320 alkaloids had been isolated and their molecular structures were identified. Among them, 34 alkaloids had been established as natural new com-pounds and all results of the investigation were published in peer-reviewed international journals. Some biological activities of total alkaloids and certain individual compounds had been studied. In accordance with phytochemical and biological activity studies, several products, the cattle weight gain preparation “Targa”, the preparation for the uterus smooth muscles contraction “Alkum”, the anti-diabetic preparation “Dentamon-10”, the expectorant “Stelleriaphytin”, the liver protective and immune-active preparation “Barbadin”, had been obtained on the basis of collaborative work and the products had been introduced in the market.   • Medicinal plants - Therapeutic effective compounds

      Abstract: In plants, substances starting with a simple skeleton to highly complex chemical structures having specific activities are synthesized. Plants are still considered a resource of valuable raw materials for producing different therapeutic and health supporting products, as well as a pool of significant pharmacological active compounds. According to the analysis of the recent PubMed research trends, it was observed that the number of scientific research interest targeting plant-derived natural products had increased. New approaches for discovery of medicinal plants, isolation, identification and characterization of secondary metabolites, and resupply of plant-derived natural products are being developed. Meanwhile, the usage of medicinal plants and plant-derived natural products for any disease conditions is being increased worldwide. There is a limited possibility to isolate therapeutically active compounds from natural-originated plants and resupply them in the market. Therefore, alternative resupply approaches are being developed that they rely on biotechnological products and chemical synthesis. Currently, the research on medicinal plants and plant-derived secondary products is going with success using a broad interdisciplinary approach of chemical and biological sciences involving advanced technologies. Medicinal plants are a source of therapeutically active compounds and new drugs, and other health supporting products.   • Study of quality evaluation and hepatoprotective effect of Licozinat
           matrix tablet

      Abstract: Monoammonium glycyrrhizinate of Glcyrrhiza root has been used as an expectorant, detoxificator, anti-allergic, and antioxidant. Japanese researchers have been determined its anti-hepatitis A, B, C, D viruses activity. Therefore, we isolated mono-ammonium glycyrrhizinate from Glycyrrhiza root, grown in Mongolia and developed controlled release matrix tablet. Appropriate excipients were chosen for matrix tablet: lactose as a diluent, 5% of PVP-K30 as a binder, HPMC as a matrix former, 3% of talc and 1% of magnesium stearate as a glidiant or lubricant. We prepared matrix tablet by wet granulation method and pressed by 2.5 kPa pressure. Formulation 5 (F5) was determined the most qualified tablet design and it released drug constantly in vitro. For the determining of hepatoprotective effect, we studied influence on hepatocytolis of preparation in vivo by the histological method. Results of the study showed that the Licozinat matrix tablet was appropriate at a 52 mg/kg dose once daily.   • Chemical transformation of diterpenoid alkaloids

      Abstract: The diterpenoid alkaloids, with an intriguing chemistry and numerous varied bioactivities, constitute the largest and most complicated group of terpenoid alkaloids. The diterpenoid alkaloids, isolated mainly from Aconitum and Delphinium species (Ranunculaceae), have been of great interest since the early 1800 because of their pharmacological properties. Extracts of Aconitum species were used in ancient times for treatment of gout, hypertension, neuralgia, rheumatism, and even toothache. Extracts have also been used as arrow poisons. Some Delphinium species are extremely toxic and constitute a serious threat to livestock. Delphinium extracts also manifest insecticidal properties. In the past 30 to 40 years, interest in the diterpenoid alkaloids has increased because of the complex structures and interesting chemistry involved. In this review, we summarize recent progress on the chemical transformations of diterpenoid alkaloids.   • Study of alkaloids of seeds and barks from Sophora alopecuroides L.

      Abstract: In this study, seeds (I, II) and bark of seeds (III) of Sophora alopecuroides L (Fabaceae) growing in Mongolia were investigated for their alkaloid compositions. Main alkaloids were detected by capillary gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) from the alkaloid extracts of the seeds (I). As a result, nine alkaloids identified such as two alkaloids cytisine (1), and N-methylcytisine (2) cytisine type threecyclic quinolizidine alkaloids, one alkaloid 5.6-dihydrolupanine(4) sparteine type tetracyclic quinolizidine alkaloids, six alkaloids-matrine (5), matrine-N-oxide (6), sophocarpine (7), sophoridine (9), sophoramine (10), isoso-phoramine (11) matrine type tetracyclic quinolizidine alkaloids. Eight alkaloids were detected and identified from the seeds (II) by GC-MS method such as such as including cytisine (1), N-methylcytisine (2) cytisine type threecyclic quinolizidine alkaloids, one alkaloid a-isolupanine (3) sparteine type tetracyclic quinolizidine alkaloids, five alkaloid matrine (5), matrine-N-oxide (6), sopho-carpine (7), sophoranol (8), sophoridine (9) matrine type tetracyclic quinolizidine alkaloids. Five alkaloids were detected and identi-fied from the bark of seeds (III) by GC-MS method such as such as matrine (4), matrine-N-oxide (5), sophoramine (8), sophoridine (9) matrine type tetracyclic quinolizidine alkaloids and N-methoxycarbonylimidazol (12) other type quinolizidine alkaloids. The main components were identified as matrine (25.2%), matrine-N-oxide (46.2%), sophocarpine (4.40%), sophoramine (3.39%) from the seeds (I), while matrine (42.3%), matrine-N-oxide (27.35%),cytisine (6.14%), N-methylcytisine (4.38%) from the seeds (II) and matrine-N-oxide (46.26%), matrine (24.8%), sophoramine (9.38%), sophoridine (5.89%) from the bark of seeds in the species. N-methoxycarbonylimidazol was new for the genus Sophora.   • Polysaccharides study of three mushrooms growing in Mongolia

      Abstract: This study was aimed to analyze of polysaccharides from fruiting bodies of Fomitopsis officinalis (Vill.ex.Fr.), Laetipo-rus sulphureus (Bull.ex.Fr.) and Inonotus obliquus (Pers.ex.Fr.) medicinal mushrooms, growing in Mongolia. As a result of “step by step” extraction method we have obtained 4 fractions of polysaccharide (water-soluble: HWE50 and HWE100; cold alkali-soluble CA; hot alkali-soluble HA) form the each mushroom sample. Polysaccharide fraction’s yields extracted by hot water from Fomitopsis officinalis (Vill.ex.Fr.), Laetiporus sulphureus (Bull.ex.Fr.) and Inonotus obliquus (Pers.ex.Fr.) were 3.68%, 8.82% and 12.84%. Yields of alkali-soluble polysaccharides were 18.64%, 68.03% and 28.75%, respectively, which results more than water fractions. The main monosaccharide composition in all polysaccharide fractions were glucose, and a content of glucose was varied 30%-100%. Therefore, they can be considered glucans. Water-soluble polysaccharide fractions contain fucose (until 12%), man-nose (until 18%) and galactose (until 30%). An average molecular mass of water-soluble polysaccharides were calculated Mw 100–150kDa or it can be considered a low, while an average molecular mass of alkali-soluble polysaccharides was a bit high 300–750кDа. All polysaccharides were heterogenic.   • Study of essential oil composition of Pyrethrum pulchrum Ledeb.

      Abstract: Pyrethrum pulchrum an impressive flower growing on large-stoned screes at the snow line, usually on glacier moraines in the mountains of Central Asia and South Siberia. The purpose of this study was to determine the essential oil composition from the aerial part of Pyrethrum pulchrum growing in Mongolia. The essential oil was obtained by hydro distillation and it had yield determined 0.1%. The oil was analyzed by GC-MS techniques. Fifty-seven components were identified representing 99.98% of the total oil composition. The main compounds of essential oil were camphor (33.9%), linalool (21.1%), α-pinene (9.0%), (Z)-γ-Curcumyl 2-methylbutyrate (4.82%), pentylcurcumene (3.21%), camphene (2.85%), tricosane (2.78%), nerolidol (2.63%), α-selinene (1.8%) and β-penine (1.4%). To our best knowledge, no previous studies have been reported on the chemical composition of the essential oil of Pyrethrum pulchrum.   • Review analysis on phytochemical and biological activity studies on plants
           of Aquilegia L.

      Abstract: About 60-70 species of the Aquilegia L. genus used in Western and Eastern traditional medicine grown in the England, Scotland, Wales, Siberia and Canada. The Aquilegia L. genus is used to treat a variety of diseases, in particular, digestive organs dysfunctions as stomach ulcer, liver disease, as well as cancer, lung disease and rheumatic diseases.
      The phytochemical studies of Aquilegia L. genus have been started since the 1960s and currently 57 natural compounds isolated from 16 plant species. These include labdane diterpene - 2 (3.5%), cycloartane - 13 (22.8%), flavonoids - 22 (38.5%), alkaloids and nitrogen-containing compounds - 10 (17.5%) and phenolic acids, fatty acids. From these 19 new natural compounds belonging to cycloartane glycosides, labdane diterpene, flavoalkaloids and nitrile nitrogen compound have been identified. The presence of fla-voalkaloid can consider a specific characterization of Aqiulegia species.
      Antioxidative, hepatoprotective, antibacterial and anti-cancer activities of various extracts and some isolated pure compounds of few species have been studied.
      In Mongolia, there are five species of plants including A.sibirica Lam, A.viridiflora Pall, A.glandulosa Fisch, A.ganboldii Kamelin & Gubanov, A.turczaninovii Kamelin & Gubanov and their phytochemical and biological activity have not been studied yet.   • Results of estimation some antioxidant compounds in plants growing in the

      Abstract: Ascorbic acid, catalase and peroxidase are indicators of adaptive processes which are taking place in plants under the environmental influence. In this work activity dynamics of catalase, peroxidase, ascorbic acid and malondialdehyde content was estimated in leafs of Betula platyphylla (Sukacz.) and Larix sibirica (Ledb.) grown in Ulaanbaatar city and city forest area. From the result of this work we can see that in plants grown in Ulaanbaatar city there is an intense oxidation of lipids, Larix sibirica (Ledb.) steadiest in the city conditions. The result of this work can be used for the selection of plants more suitable for the urban plantings.       Abstract: The aim of this paper is to summarize the results of soil investigations of Lancea tibetica grown in the water-meadow of North Mongolia. It is very important to determine the minerals in the soil of meadow lands where the endangered plants in Mongo-lia are grown. Medicinal plants, their extracts and soil deserve special attention because of the important influence they have on human health. They are easily contaminated with metals during growth, development and processing. In this study, we determined distribution of 43 mineral elements in surface soil of meadow lands, whichconstituted of determined 10 elements in oxide forms, metallic and mobile elements Cu 28 mg/kg, Cr 90 mg/kg, Zn 92 mg/kg, Pb 24 mg/kg, Ni 41 mg/kg and Co 13 mg/kg. We also in-vestigated soil morphological description and hygienic microbiological study such as E.coli, thermophilic bacteria, gut flora, Clos-tridium perfringens, soil pH, quantity of microorganism per 1 gram soil, quantity of fungi per 1 gram soil. In addition, we deter-mined the physical and chemical property of soil such as pH, calcium carbonate, humus, capacity electrical conductive, amount of mobile phosphorus, potassium and mechanical composition of soil such as a particle size of sand, dust and clay. The chemical composition of essential oil from R.rosea was determined by GC/MS analysis. The essential oil of R.rosea mainly consists of oxygenated monoterpenes (83.38 %). The chief components of the oil were geraniol (25.93 %), myr-tenol (14.94 %), octanol (13.71 %) and (E)-pinocarveol (11.07 %).
      Antioxidant activity of ethanol extract (root) was evaluated by using DPPH (1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazine) radical scavenging assay with an IC50 value of 5.84 μg/ml. The cytotoxicity was measured using the MTT assay. The ethanol extract of R.rosea pre-sented toxic activity against A-431 (51.80%) human epidermoid carcinoma cell line.       Abstract: Brewery’s spent grain is the main by-product of the brewing industry. The effects of replacing fat with arabinoxylan fraction of BSG for physicochemical, textural properties and sensory evaluations of reduced-fat sausages are evaluated. Control was prepared with 15% fat, and three reduced-fat sausages were formulated with 5, 10 and 15% arabinoxylan fraction (T1 sausage with 5% of arabinoxylan fraction + 10% of fat, T2 sausage with 10% of arabinoxylan fraction + 5% of fat and T3 sausage with 15% of arabinoxylan fraction + 0% of fat). With increasing arabinoxylan fraction content in the sausage, the fat content and food calories are decreased in reduced-fat sausages.
