  • Determination of the Flow Velocity Resistance in Non- Submerged Woody
           Plants

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Authors: A. A. Alshlem, Sundus Almontasir
      Pages: 1 - 7
Abstract: Vegetation on the bank of a river or stream has a major influence on resistance, velocity distribution, and turbulence force. The resistance to flow in open channels depends on different channel and flow parameters. Out of many factors, vegetation is the mainly important parameter in open channels. In this study have been five points to measure the velocity in the channel. The experimental work has been done by a rectangular channel made from Mild Steel, Aluminium, Alloy, Stainless Steel, and transparent clear acrylic 10 mm. and with a uniform cross-section built inside a metallic flume. The measurements were carried out under various hydraulic conditions in the flume. The stiff plants carefully were selected shaped to fit the natural plants found in nature in the non-submerged case. Several discharges Q were explored. Data were available for analysis from 15 test series versus velocity for un-submerged vegetation, Point velocities at grid points of the different cross-sections are
collected and the velocity contour of each cross-section is plotted using excel. The results expose that inside the cylindrical rods’ layer, the velocity profiles no longer follows the velocity of the flow of liquid logarithmic law profile reduces within the vegetated region of the channel. It is identified that the added external drag force applied by plants reduces the mean flow velocity surrounded by a vegetated section of the channel compared to the non-vegetated section. The effects of hydraulic flow characteristics of riparian vegetation were studied by taking vertical velocity measurements of the most irregular deflected shape of the vegetation. Within vegetation, the mean velocity decreases with the flow for which the vegetative roughness increases with decreasing velocity.

Abstract: A well-managed, effective waste management program increases the health and environmental quality of the country. Therefore, the overall aim of this study was to investigate the knowledge and participation of household solid domestic waste management in some selected communities in Bo city Southern Sierra Leone. The study's objectives were: to determine the different methods of solid waste
disposal, to determine existing household solid waste management practices, to determine the risk factors associated with improper waste management in Bo municipality, and to determine the factors affecting improper domestic waste management. A total of 100 households from five (5) sections in Bo City were examined to achieve the objectives of this study. The sampling procedure employed was the stratified random technique. Microsoft Excel was used to derive simple percentages from examining the knowledge and participation of households in solid domestic waste management from the selected communities. The results of this study revealed that there is high participation at the household level on solid domestic waste management, there is poor knowledge and a low level of public awareness on solid domestic waste management, disease outbreak is the most commonly known risk factor associated with improper waste management, there were various methods of household waste management options and disposal. The study concluded that Bo city council waste collection vehicle was the most used option or way of waste disposal 44% of the respondents indicated using this method followed by burning of waste 42% With a few numbers of respondents using other methods like private service providers composting. The study concludes that household Participation is not directly proportional to the knowledge and awareness of domestic waste management.

  • Chemistry and Toxicological Impacts of Hazardous Substances in
           Electronic-Waste: A Review

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

      Authors: Dr. Swapnila Roy
      Pages: 17 - 21
Abstract: Over the recent past, the global market of electrical and electronic equipment (EEE) has grown exponentially, while the lifespan of these products has become increasingly shorter. Most of the cases Various heavy metals, halogenated compounds and radioactive elements which are present in ewaste, pose serious threat to the environment during their inappropriate recycling processes. During
burning of the e-waste in the open environment, hazardous aromatic compounds and dioxins are generated which are highly toxic than domestic waste burning. If the combustion retardants like PBDEs (Polybrominated Diphenyl Ethers) from e-wastes are released into the environment, they are bio accumulated in living organisms due to their lipophilic nature whereas release of CFCs (Chlorofluoro carbon) from the e-waste dumping site would eventually destroy the ozonosphere.Traditionally hydrophobic organic compounds have been adsorbed to so-called sorbent organic material, which includes the organic fraction of soils and sediments. However, recently it has been shown that many hydrophobic organic compounds have higher affinity to many types of plastics compared to natural sediments. Most of workers are not conscious about hazardous effects e-wastes,even they are not provided with the protective attires, gloves, glasses and the masks. Using bare hands for disassembling and separation of e-wastes can cause skin and respiratory disorders. The purpose of this paper is to highlight a review of the toxicological and chemical impact of substances of electronic Waste in our environment.

  • Bioremediation of Polluted Drainage with Petroleum Hydrocarbon

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

      Authors: Ukpaka C. P., Nwosi-Anele A. S, Chie-Amadi G. O., Chuku B.
      Pages: 24 - 34
Abstract: This research was aimed at examining the petroleum product discharge in drainage within Port Harcourt City, samples were collected and mixed. Microbial analysis and physicochemical properties of the sample were determined. The sample was subjected into bioremediation after culturing of the microorganisms isolated, identified and characterized. The two microorganisms used are pseudomonas aeruginosa and aspergillus niger. The results obtained revealed high concentration for heavy crude oil than mixed crude oil; also it is observed that the two species of the microbes used are capable of remediating a pollutant environment. The specific growth rate of substrate and microbes, maximum specific growth rate of substrate and microbes as well as the equilibrium or dissociation constant was computed as demonstrated in this research. The challenges uncounted in the remediation of polluted drainage influence the effectiveness of the remediation programme. Indeed, constant discharge of waste into the drain as well as constant remediation is required, but the continuous discharged inhibit the effectiveness of the microorganism inoculated into the system because constant change in the substrate concentration. The activation of the microorganism will speed up the action of degradation, substrate utilization and the required period to achieve perfect clean-up. The kinekic model demonstrates the various mechanisms which the coefficients values can be evaluated and the obtained values usefulness in predicting the degradation period when the active site of the capable organisms are not inhibited

  • Excessive Application of Synthetic Fertilizers and their Adverse Impact on
           the Productivity of Soil

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

      Authors: Asim Ahmad
      Pages: 39 - 45
Abstract: In the present scenario of agriculture, the chemical fertilizers are the essential part of growing any kind of crop. They macro and micro nutrients play a vital role in the production of crop and can be increased but plant growth do not attain developed roots and do not attain maturity. The excessive use of fertilizers is very dangerous and enter the water, air and soil. The toxic substances absorbed by plants passes to human body. The toxicity starts from the manufacturing process through products and by products containing harmful components. The release of gases like NH3, CO2, and CH4 etc. produce adverse effects on the environment and ecosystem. The manufacturing units discharge their waste in the nearby water system lakes, ponds and water bodies and causes water pollution. The regular use of fertilizers is continuously deteriorating the quality of soil and producing excessive growth of aquatic plants and causes dumping of decayed plants and depth goes on decreasing day by day, called eutrophication. The adverse effects of chemical fertilizers can be reduced by applying new agricultural techniques and use of bio-fertilizers for healthy crop free from any king of toxicity of metals in vegetables, and fruits etc. The chemical fertilizers directly harm the environment and ecosystem. It covers Water pollution, soil pollution and air pollution

  • Environmental Impacts of Water Pollution

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Authors: Manoj Kumar Chauhan, Nadira Malik
      Pages: 46 - 49
Abstract: Water is required for all life forms to exist. Water is essential for agriculture, industry, fishing, and tourism, among other things, in addition to household uses. Water availability has decreased as the world's population, urbanization, and industrialization have increased. The quality of the water used is also deteriorating as it becomes increasingly polluted. You've probably heard about some of the health harm or adverse consequences of water contamination. This teachable moment shows the diversity, sources, and impact of water contaminates in detail. A few pollution prevention techniques were also mentioned, as have the laws engaged. Water is available that is essential for all forms of life, food production, sustainable growth, and general well-being. It is inconceivable to replacement for most of applications, challenging to de pollute, as well as costly to carry, and it is truly just one blessing from nature to mankind. Water is one of the most controllable environmental assets because it can be diverted, transported, stored, and recycled. All of these characteristics contribute to water's high utility for humans. The state's groundwater sources resources are crucial to agricultural production, energy production, livestock farming, industrial processes, reforestation, fish stocks, route planning, sporting areas, and etc. The world's freshwater ecosystems cover only about 0.5 percent of the planet's surface and have a volume of 2.84x105 Km3. Rivers cover a negligible portion of the land surface (0.1 percent). River channels contain only 0.01 percent of the world's water. Despite their small quantity, running waters are extremely important. Climate change is caused by a rise in the global average temperature cause of greenhouse effect. It raises the temperature of the water, causing sea creatures and sea life to die and, as a result, contaminate the water.
