  • Analysis of Specific Surfaces of Composite Material: Clays of Madagascar
           and TiO2

    • Abstract: Publication year: 2020Source: International Journal of Materials and Chemistry, Volume 10, Number 1Andrianainarivelo MahandrimananaThe objective of this study to show that TiO2 can be attached to the external surface of clays. Two types of clay, white and green clay, have been used because those raw materials are very abundant in Madagascar. The composite material is useful to eliminate pathogenic microorganism and decompose organic compounds in polluted water, for example. The BET (Brunauer, Elmett and Teller) analysis is the best method to evaluate the capacity of the composite to catalyze the reaction of decomposition. The BET analysis of specific area are 60.71 m2/g for white clay (micropore surface 9.63 m2/g and outer surface 51.08 m2/g with pore size 151.46 Å, an A° = 1millionth of a millimeter) and 249.52 m2/g for green clay (micropore area 20.51 m2/g and outer surface 229.01 m2/g with pore size 49.96 Å). The size of the micropores is less than 17 Å. When TiO2-clays are treated at 600°C, the specific area of white clay increases, it becomes 94.07 m2/g while pore size decreases (81.39 Å). For green clay, the specific area is about the same (247.61 m2/g) and pore size doesn’t change (49.97 Å).
       
  • Preparation of Carboxymethyl Chitosan Bombyx Mori Nanofibers by
           Electrospinning Process

For this purpose, samples of carboxymethylchitosan were synthesized, and their molecular mass characteristics were also studied. Distilled water, acetic and trifluoroacetic acids were used as solvents in the preparation of polymer solutions. The nanofibrous structure based on carboxymethylchitosan in the solvent trifluoroacetic acid with an average diameter of nanofibers of 156–282 nm was obtained by varying the conditions of the electrospinning process.
       
  • Synthesis of Methylacrylate and Acrylic Acid Copolymers and Their
           Application as Materials for Restoration

RashidovaThe radical mechanism was used to synthesize copolymers of methylacrylate and acrylic acid in the bulk and dioxane. By regulating the composition of the copolymer, macromolecules with both hydrophilic and hydrophobic properties were obtained. It was shown that the obtained copolymers satisfy the basic criteria required for the application in the practice of restoration of archaeological objects of different nature.
       
  • Entropy Terms in Statistical Thermodynamic Analysis Formula for
           Non-stoichiometric Interstitial Compounds

    • Abstract: Publication year: 2019Source: International Journal of Materials and Chemistry, Volume 9, Number 1Nobumitsu ShohojiA series of statistical thermodynamic analyses were made since 1974 for different types of non-stoichiometric interstitial compounds MXx under simplifying a priori assumption of constant interaction energy E(X-X) between nearest neighbour interstitial atoms X within a homogeneity composition range of MXx at arbitrary temperature T [K]. Mode of distribution of X atoms in interstitial sites in MXx lattice is represented by number θ of available interstitial sites for occupation by X atoms per M atom and the value of θ is determined to fulfil the a priori assumption. Mode of atomic configuration would yield major contribution to entropy term ∆S that appears in conventional thermodynamic expression of Gibbs free energy of formation, ∆G, in form of T∆S. In the statistical thermodynamic formulation, contribution of tightly bound electron appearing in form of RT ln fX where fX refers to atomic partition function of X atom in the MXx lattice and R the universal gas constant. Judging from this mathematical form of the term, R ln fX is considered to represent entropic contribution from tightly bound electron to X atom in MXx lattice. In the published series of works on statistical thermodynamic analysis for non-stoichiometric interstitial compounds, calculated values for R ln fX were reported but they were not reviewed with serious attention because R ln fX was considered merely as a secondary factor compared to principal factor E(X-M) referring to interaction energy between X and M in MXx lattice that represents enthalpy ∆H in conventional thermodynamic term. In this review article, consideration is given exclusively to the factor R ln fX evaluated in statistical thermodynamic approach to non-stoichiometric interstitial compounds.
       
  • Influence of Linear Flow Velocity of Uncracked Ammonia (NH3) Gas on
           Formation of Higher Nitrides, 𝛅-MoN and 𝛆-Fe2N, under
           Concentrated Solar Irradiation in the SF40 Solar Furnace at PSA

    • Abstract: Publication year: 2019Source: International Journal of Materials and Chemistry, Volume 9, Number 1Nobumitsu Shohoji, Fernando Almeida Costa Oliveira, José Galindo, Jorge Cruz Fernandes, José Rodríguez, Inmaculada Cañadas, Luís Guerra RosaNitriding experiments for powder specimens of Mo and Fe were carried out using a solar furnace SF40 at PSA (Plataforma Solar de Almería) in Tabernas (Spain) in uncracked ammonia NH3 gas (NH3 gas with suppressed extent of dissociation by flowing) aiming at determining the range of linear velocity v of NH3 gas flow to yield higher nitride phases, δ-MoN for Mo and ε-Fe2N for Fe. Standard solar exposure duration at a specified reaction temperature T was set to be 60 min over range of v between 1.14 mm·s-1 and 11.4 mm·s-1. By X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis, presence of δ-MoN was detected besides γ-Mo2N and metallic Mo for Mo powder specimen heated to 900 ºC in NH3 gas flow at v = 1.14 mm·s-1 but XRD peaks identifiable as δ-MoN became indiscernible when v was increased to 11.4 mm·s-1. On the other hand, for Fe powder specimen exposed to NH3 gas flow at v = 1.14 mm·s-1 at T = 500 ºC, remnant metallic α-Fe was detectable by XRD at the down-stream side of the specimen holder but no metallic α-Fe was detected at the up-stream side of the specimen holder suggesting that chemical activity a(N) of N atom in uncracked NH3 gas tended to decrease along the NH3 gas flow path on going from the up-stream side to the down-stream side.
       
  • The Influence of Type of Surfactant on Physicochemical Properties of
           Liquid Soap

The first group of samples consisted of anionic surfactant (SLES), amphoteric surfactant (BETAIN) and nonionic surfactant (DEA). The second set of samples consisted of anionic surfactant and two nonionic surfactants. The aim of this work is to investigate the influence of the type of surfactant as well as the mass fraction of surfactants on the physicochemical properties of liquid soap. The surface tension, electrical conductivity and density for different concentrations of all examined type of surfactants have been determined as well as the critical micelle concentration (CMC). Moreover, the studies have shown that by increasing concentrations of zwitterionic (amphoteric) surfactant, and by decreasing concentration of nonionic surfactant, a mild decrease in pH value and viscosity increase occurred. In contrast, with increasing polyglycoside concentrations and decreasing concentration of DEA, a mild increase in pH but a decrease in viscosity was observed. In order to monitor the stability of the liquid soaps obtained, the appearance, color and odor were observed at three different temperatures at +4°C, room temperature and at + 40°C, in the dark and under UV light during the three months.
       
  • Removal of Dyes from Waste Waters through Adsorption Using HCl Activated
           Coal

    • Abstract: Publication year: 2018Source: International Journal of Materials and Chemistry, Volume 8, Number 2Misael Silas Nadiye-Tabbiruka, Lebogang LunganiPurification of waste water by removal of methylene blue using acid activated Morupule coal was investigated through a study of thermodynamics and kinetics of the dye adsorption from aqueous solution at various concentrations, pH and temperature. The rate of adsorption and quantity adsorbed were found to increase with increasing initial methylene blue concentration, decreasing pH and increasing temperature. Adsorption followed a two stage profile indicating an increase in available surface for the process probably initiated by initial adsorption causing swelling of the coal. Kinetics data follows the Legergren pseudo second order model best indicating the existence of two simultaneous adsorption processes thought to be adsorption on the outer and inner surfaces as well as on the surface freshly exposed by swelling. The thermodynamics data fitted the Freundlich model best indicating heterogeneity of the coal surface.
       
  • Synthesis and Characterization of New Dental Composites Using Calcium
           Fluoroaluminosilicate Glass

Al AjelyNew dental composites prepared from Bis_GMA/TEGDMA with different ratios of Calcium fluoroaluminosilicate glass used as filler. The particle size of Calcium fluoroaluminosilicate glass was within (1-10) µm. visible light with 480nm wavelength and duration time of 40sec.was used in the polymerization process. Physical and mechanical properties of the dental material prepared were studied. These properties including, shrinkage; depth of cure, thermal expansion coefficient, Degree of conversion and diametral tensile strength (DTS). The static flexural strength and flexural modulus were measured using a three-point bending set up according to the ISO-4049 specification. The volumetric shrinkage values was found ranging between 2.6% to 2.9%, The degree of conversion was found between 79.57% to 68.27%, The depth of cure is 2.6 to 3.3mm, thermal expansion coefficient was also between 46.7 and 58.4×10-6 °C-1. While the mechanical properties such as the highest flexural strength was found about 90.35MPa, the flexural modulus measurements revealed the value of (11.29GPa), and finally DTS measurements showed 54.27MPa. All tested composite samples were complied with the requirement of ISO 4904: 2008 and ANSI/ADA specification No. 27 for cure resins.
       
  • A Study of the Absorption Edge of CdS:In Thin Films Prepared by the Spray
           Pyrolysis Technique

IkhmayiesCadmium sulphide (CdS) is a II-VI compound with a wide band gap energy that enables it to be used as a window material in the CdTe based solar cells. In this work the absorption edge of indium doped cadmium sulphide (CdS:In) thin films was investigated. The films were prepared on glass substrates using the spray pyrolysis technique at a substrate temperature Ts = 490°C. X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) revealed that the films are polycrystalline. The films displayed a wurtzite hexagonal structure with some indications of the presence of the cubic zinc blind phase. The transmittance of the films was measured at room temperature in the wavelength range 400–1100 nm and used to deduce the absorbance. The second derivative of the absorbance revealed the existence of the free exciton peaks of the wurtzite phase. The A and B free exciton peaks showed a merged peak and the C free exciton peak was apparent. These results were compared with those obtained by different authors. The separations of the aforementioned peaks were deduced and found to be in good agreement with the values found in the literature.
       
  • Adsorption of Cadmium Ions on Geopolymers Derived from Ordinary Clay and
           Rice Husk Ash

MwangiThe presence of heavy metals in water is of growing concern. One crucial global strain is the existing disparity in water distribution resulting into millions of people lacking access to safe clean water. This is exasperated by the looming climate change and increased pollution impendence posed by industrialization and population growth. Consequently, pursuance of sustainable materials and technologies for wastewater remediation is critical. Adoption of adsorbents for water treatment is desirable due to their simplicity and cheap materials involved. Geopolymers are prepared hydrothermally using alumina and silica gleaned from clay and rice husks waste materials respectively. These materials are locally attainable and environmentally benign. This work reports synthesis of geopolymers GP-1, GP-2 and GP-3 prepared using clays from three different regions. The XRD diffraction patterns obtained revealed the presence of quartz (SiO2), albite (NaAlSi3O8), vermiculite (Mg,Fe,Al)3((Al,Si)4O10)(OH)2.4H2O), microcline (KAlSi3O8), analcime (NaAlSi2O6•H2O) and natrite (Na2CO3) among other crystalline phases. The initial adsorption rates were found to increase as the Si/Al ratio of the geopolymers increased. The adsorption rates were found to fit into the second order kinetic model. This implies that Cd (II) ions adsorb on geopolymer adsorbents through chemisorption.
