Worldwide approximately 5.4 million bites, 2.7 million envenomations, and 81,000-1,38,000 deaths are observed per annum. The incidences are higher among farmers and plantation workers. Antivenom is the only treatment available and the production of the same is challenging due to geographical variation of snakes, storage conditions, and non-availability of venom for production. Antivenom therapy is associated with immediate or delayed hypersensitivity and does not prevent local tissue damage. Thus the search for medicinal plants by the scientific community has become relevant. The ethnobotanical studies on various plants have revealed their use to treat various ailments including snakebite. Hence, the review is aimed to amass the medicinal plants studied and also emphasize various components isolated that have shown promising results.Page(s): 491-505

  Authors : Verma, Nitin: Advances in analytical methods and bioassay development have helped to push forward the research in natural products. Their high chemical diversity and the effects of evolutionary pressure to create biologically active molecules could be attributed to success in drug discovery. Despite the availability of modern analytical instrumentation techniques, metabolic profiling covers the identification of a selected group of metabolites. The phytochemical analysis is commonly performed using standard techniques such as thin-layer chromatography, high-performance thin-layer chromatography, highperformance liquid chromatography, gas chromatography and more recently mass spectrometry and nuclear magnetic resonance spectrometry. Two-dimensional J-resolved Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) spectra and multivariate data analysis techniques were applied to avoid low resolution and overlapping signals hampering the identification of the individual components of botanicals. On-targeted metabolomic analysis via the ultra-high performance liquid chromatography-quadrupole time-of-flight mass spectrometry (UHPLC/Q-TOF-MS) was utilised to localise compounds belonging to various chemical classes (i.e. oxygenated fatty acids, flavonols, phenolic acids, and sinapoyl choline derivatives). Rotation planar chromatography over-pressured layer chromatography and electro planar chromatography are the other innovations. Parallel and serially coupled layers open up new avenues for the analysis of a large number of samples for high-throughput screening and very complex matrices in a natural product. Analytical strategies with applications to natural extracts and novel methods that have strong potential, regardless of how often they are used are discussed with respect to their potential applications challenges and future trends.Page(s): 506-526

Terpenoids from Centella asiatica, a novel inhibitor against
RNA-dependent-RNA polymerase activity of NSP12 of the SARS CoV-2

- Abstract: Title: Terpenoids from Centella asiatica, a novel inhibitor against RNA-dependent-RNA polymerase activity of NSP12 of the SARS CoV-2 (COVID-19)
  Authors : Consul, Chitrakshi; Beg, Md Amjad; Thakur, Sonu Chand: Covid-19, the first case of which was reported in Wuhan (China) in December 2019 was found to be a strain of coronaviruses like SARS and MERS reported earlier. These viruses are positive strain RNA viruses composed of both structural as well as non-structural proteins. The enzyme RdRp (RNA dependent RNA polymerase) stands responsible for catalyzing the replication of this virus within the host cell. A disruption in the core catalytic subunit composed of nsp12, nsp7, and nsp8 may inhibit the replication of the same. Different drugs targeting different sites on the virus have been developed. In this context, some of the natural products of the plant Centella asiatica was lead for further drug development against the target proteins of RdRp protein (PDB ID: 6NUR) through molecular docking. These compounds are 2,3-dihydroxyurs-12-en-28-oic acid, corosolic acid and pomolic acid which are triterpenoids and have highest binding affinity against RdRp protein thereby arresting the viral replication. Several previous studies showed triterpenoids as pertinent mediators implicated in the in vitro immune response.Page(s): 527-537

In vitro antidiabetic and anti-inflammatory activities of the bark of
Ehretia acuminata R.Br.
- Abstract: Title: In vitro antidiabetic and anti-inflammatory activities of the bark of Ehretia acuminata R.Br.
  Authors : Kaur, Amanpreet; Shukla, Abha; Shukla, Rishi Kumar: Ehretia acuminata is native to Southeast Asia, America, and Africa. It is commonly used as fodder and in quite a variety of medicinal applications. E. acuminata is widely used in India, but there are few reports in the literature of studies on its biological properties. In this study, the antidiabetic and anti-inflammatory activities of plant E. acuminata was evaluated. The antidiabetic activity of the different extracts was measured by α-amylase and α-glycosidase inhibition method. The antiinflammatory activity was evaluated by the egg albumin of hen. Petroleum ether, chloroform, ethyl acetate, ethanol and water extracts of bark of E. acuminata was evaluated for in-vitro anti-inflammatory and antidiabetic activity. Ethyl acetate and ethanol extract showed significant anti-inflammatory effects (IC50 170 and 172 μg/mL respectively). Chloroform is the only extract that showed significant inhibition against the antidiabetic effect (IC50 42-45 μg/mL). The findings suggest that the bark of E. acuminata contains potential antidiabetic and anti-inflammatory compounds, which could be tested as drug candidates against diabetic and inflammation-related pathological processes in medicinal chemistry studies.Page(s): 538-543
