Abstract: Grace E. O. Constable, Alex C. Bissember, Reyne Pullen - Volume 74(9)

The alignment of intended learning outcomes for chemistry graduates and the actualised outcomes has been called into question recently. This article provides an overview of three literature-based chemistry education approaches to address this: authentic research experiences, engaging students in citizen science projects, and curriculum reform aligned with systems thinking frameworks.

A novel method is described, using perruthenate salts, for performing the rarely reported dehydrogenation of primary alcohols to afford unsaturated aldehydes in low to moderate yields. The discovery, method development, reaction scope, and associated challenges of this method are presented in detail.

In this article, the pKas of seven phospholes were determined theoretically. The major challenge in their determination is that the experimental pKas of all the seven phospholes are not reported in the literature. We are the first ones to endeavour to calculate their pKas.

We developed a simple and selective fluorescent aptasensor for the detection of oxytetracycline (OTC) using aptamer-conjugated gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) and a complex formed between oxytetracycline and a europium cation. In this study, AuNPs were modified with an OTC aptamer using two methods (Tween and NaCl methods).

Abstract: Lan Xie, Yangyang Zheng, Jie Deng, Wenkang Jiang, Huijun Liu - Volume 74(9)

A new Cs-γ-CD-MOF material was synthesised by an improved gas vapour diffusion method. The adsorption capacity of γ-CD (142.92 mg g−1) and Cs-γ-CD-MOFs (280.05 mg g−1) for myricetin was compared. The energy and conformation of the adsorption of myricetin on Cs-γ-CD-MOFs were obtained by molecular docking.

Abstract: Karen M. Corbett, Colin W. Pouton, David K. Chalmers - Volume 74(9)

Cyclic peptides have pharmaceutical, materials chemistry, and agricultural applications. Structure–function relationships are essential to understanding cyclic peptide activity and developing novel, functional cyclic peptides. Computer simulations, in particular temperature replica exchange molecular dynamics simulations (TREMDS), allow in-depth study of cyclic peptide conformations. Here, we discuss the background of TREMDS and their recent applications to the study of cyclic peptide conformations.

As an important biomarker, NADH is associated with breast cancer. In this paper, silver-plated gold core–shell nanoparticles containing Raman signalling molecules were synthesized. Based on SERS technology, the detection of NADH in complex biological samples of serum was achieved, offering the possibility to expand the early diagnosis of breast cancer.

Carbon onions are multilayered fullerenes that typically involve thousands of atoms. We evaluate the performance of force fields for their interaction energies. We proceed to show that the interaction energies between the layers of a giant ten-layered carbon onion increase linearly with the size of the carbon onion.

The 18 kDa translocator protein (TSPO) is an important mitochondrial protein that is widely used as a biomarker for assessing neuroinflammation in animals and humans. It may also be a therapeutic target for a range of inflammatory diseases. This Account summarises our group’s contributions to TSPO drug discovery over the past 20 years.

The diverse nature of Chloramine-T, the sodium salt of N-chloro-p-toluenesulfonamide, abbreviated as CAT, acts as a source of halonium cation and nitrogen anion; acting as both base and nucleophile it reacts with broad range of functional groups and brings divergent molecular transformations to synthetic chemistry and also finds utility in analytical fields.

A highly ordered Ag-TiO2 NPA SERS substrate could well adsorb organic molecules of R6G to achieve sensitive detection. Authors: Nitin A. Patil
      Abstract: Nitin A. Patil

Oligonucleotides-based agents are versatile biomolecules that modulate gene expression. Over the last two decades, oligonucleotides-based agents have emerged as promising biochemical tools and therapeutics. However, achieving efficient oligonucleotide delivery remains a major limitation. Conjugation of peptides to oligonucleotides presents a viable solution to this conundrum. This review provides an overview of chemical strategies explored to synthesise peptide–oligonucleotide conjugates.

Lead pollution in waterways remains a pressing environmental concern worldwide. One promising solution is lead adsorption using metal–organic frameworks. UiO-66 can be synthesised with functional groups and often exhibits defect sites created by missing linkers, both of which may directly participate in Pb2+ adsorption as determined by our computational study.

Single molecule conductance values of symmetrically and asymmetrically contacted tolane (diphenylacetylene) compounds are found to be in excellent agreement with the predictions made on the basis of a recently proposed ‘molecular circuit law’. The experimental verification of the circuit law gives further confidence in the use of this relationship in the design of compounds for use in molecular electronics research.

Abstract: Michael A. Stevens, Peter D. Hall, Annie L. Colebatch

2,7-Bis(2-pyridyl)-1,8-naphthyridine (BPNP) has been widely used to prepare bimetallic transition metal complexes, but no examples with zinc have been reported. Herein we show that zinc binds weakly to BPNP, and the fluxional nature of these species leads to an array of monometallic and multimetallic zinc complexes of BPNP.

The deep eutectic solvent interface is nanostructured, both laterally across and normal to the surface. Combined atomic force microscopy, computational, and theoretical investigations show that the presence of water can modulate this structure.

A quality by design approach combined with quantitative structure–retention relationships and design of experiment principles is used to select the optimal conditions for maximum separation of a set of test analytes for a range of stationary phases in hydrophilic–interaction liquid chromatography. The accuracy of prediction of retention times was in the range 7.6–11.0 %.

The formation of five component [3+2] nano-sized cages assembled using charge-assisted amidinium···carboxylate hydrogen bonds was investigated. Molecular modelling suggested the cages were geometrically feasible, and 1H and DOSY NMR data are consistent with the cages forming in the highly polar solvent DMSO.

A diamine monomer containing an ether group can reduce the friction coefficient and improve the wear performance of PAI material, and the wear mechanism of the PAI material can also change due to ether linkages.
