The Story of the Historical Marker Honoring the McAllister Family
Ophthalmic Legacy

  Abstract: On August 21, 2022, more than 100 individuals from at least nine different states gathered at Wills Eye Hospital in Philadelphia. Each of the three major eye care professions in the United States was amply represented. The occasion was to celebrate the contributions of John McAllister, Sr. and his descendants, whose early efforts led to the advancement of scientific knowledge, and to the evolution of eye care in the United States. John McAllister is widely regarded as the father (or grandfather) of optometry, since his work and the work of his progeny led to the beginning of optometry as an independent profession. The highlight of the event was the dedication of a historical marker honoring the ophthalmic legacy of the McAllister Family. The marker is situated in Old Town Philadelphia, very near where John’s original optical shoppe was located. The three eye care professions—opticianry, ophthalmology, and optometry—worked hand in hand to make this remarkable achievement possible. This paper tells the story of how and why it all came about.

Important Happenings in Optometry One Hundred Years Ago

  Abstract: This paper discusses important events in optometry in 1922 and 1923. Included for 1922 are the First Conference to Establish Standards, a pivotal meeting in the development of optometric education; the founding of the American Academy of Optometry; and the 25th annual meeting of the American Optometric Association (AOA). Events noted for 1923 are Pennsylvania State College of Optometry becoming the first school to grant an OD degree approved by a state legislature; the establishment of the optometry school at the University of California, Berkeley; and the annual AOA meeting.

The Authorization for the Original Optometry Practice Act in the State of
Alabama

  Abstract: This article describes the actions of the Alabama Optical Society in passing the first optometry practice act in the state of Alabama. It serves as a testament to the determination and persistence of those early optometry leaders in the state. It required three attempts over a nine-year time period before success was achieved. Even though this law was enacted 100 years ago, in some respects, the legislative process remains similar to legislative attempts undertaken by the profession today.

Development of Optometry in Taiwan

  Abstract: Taiwan has one of the highest myopia prevalence in the world and its eye care services are provided by both ophthalmologists and optometrists. The law on the practice of optometry was passed on December 18, 2015, by the legislature; thus began a new chapter for the development of optometry. This note aims to share some information about this newly recognized eye care profession in Taiwan and share some thoughts on the future development of the profession.

George Crow, O.D., Pioneer in Optometric Vision Therapy

  Abstract: George Crow (1901-1978) practiced optometry in southern California. He was active in the Optometric Extension Program and contributed to concepts of optometric vision therapy. Two monographs which he co-authored and his role in the 1944 Baltimore Myopia Project are discussed.
