  • Presence and Pronouns: An Exploratory Investigation into the Language of
           Social VR

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Authors: Cyan DeVeaux, David M. Markowitz, Eugy Han, Mark Roman Miller, Jeffrey T. Hancock, Jeremy N. Bailenson
Abstract: Journal of Language and Social Psychology, Ahead of Print.
As social virtual reality (VR) continues to grow as a medium for digital communication, sustaining presence among communicators remains one of the main constructs that researchers and practitioners use to assess the quality of user experience. In the present paper, we explore language patterns as a behavioral link to presence. We accomplished this through an exploratory text analysis of over 4,800 min of conversation in social VR, consisting of over 130,000 spoken words from 126 participants. We observed that the use of self-references and collective references positively correlated to social presence and spatial presence. Furthermore, median interpersonal distance between communicators was positively associated with using impersonal pronouns, suggesting that participants who stood farther apart from their interlocutors tended to speak in more impersonal terms. Our work sheds light on the possible psychological mechanisms behind presence and the potential of using speech data to help build systems that enhance user engagement.

           Strategies Used by Nonnative Speakers

Authors: Loriann Roberson, Regina Kim, Marcello Russo, Paola Briganti
Abstract: Journal of Language and Social Psychology, Ahead of Print.
In this research, we investigate the impression management (IM) strategies used by nonnative speakers. We ask the following questions: (1) What IM strategies do nonnative speakers employ, (2) Are some IM strategies more effective than others, and (3) What determines the use of different IN strategies among nonnative speakers' Across two studies, we examine if some IM strategies are more effective than others in improving outcomes for nonnative speakers. Results from both studies revealed negative effects associated with the use of defensive strategies, and results from Study 2 demonstrated benefits associated with assertive strategies (i.e., self-promotion and flattery).

  • The Grammar of Persuasion: A Meta-Analytic Review Disconfirming the Role
of Nouns as Linguistic Cues of Subsequent Behavior

Authors: Marta Witkowska, Joanna Dołżycka, Caterina Suitner, Magdalena Formanowicz
Abstract: Journal of Language and Social Psychology, Ahead of Print.
Recent discoveries suggest that nouns, as a word class, exhibit a greater capacity to model real-life behavior. In the studies by [Proc Natl Acad Sci USA 108, 12653–12656 (2011)] participants prompted with a noun label rather than a semantically corresponding verb (be a voter vs. vote) were more likely to vote. However, many attempts to replicate the original results have shown unsuccessful [Proc Natl Acad Sci USA 113, 7112–7117 (2016)]. To shed light on the effectiveness of subtle linguistic manipulations, we conducted a meta-analysis of 28 effect sizes (N = 13,376), being an exact or conceptual replications of Bryan et al. Although the average effect was significant (g = 0.12), the concurrent diagnostics indicated a low trust in the replicability or stability of the effect. Based on that, we cannot conclude that the greater effectiveness of nouns as cues has been reliably demonstrated. We discuss theoretical prospects involving the verb-action link as well as the self-verification motives.

  • Reminding May Not Be Enough: Overcoming the Male Dominance of the Generic
           Masculine

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

      Authors: Patrick Rothermund, Fritz Strack
Abstract: Journal of Language and Social Psychology, Ahead of Print.
In gender-marked languages, masculine and feminine grammatical forms are distinct, with the masculine form also used for gender-mixed groups (generic masculine). Previous research indicates that the generic masculine elicits male-biased representations. Psychologically, this may be due to a misunderstanding of the communicative intention, an automatic activation of male associations, or both. In two preregistered experiments, we tested whether the male bias is affected by emphasizing the generic intention. Adding contextual information that conveyed a group's gender-mixed composition eliminated the male bias (Study 1). However, the male bias remained robust when continuously reminding participants of the generic intention via a novel grammatical marker (Study 2). These results suggest that the male bias is partly driven by associative processes that are immune against a purely explicit disambiguation of the generic intention.

  • How Positive and Negative Intergroup Contact May Shape the Communication
           of Discrimination Toward Migrants

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Authors: Francesca Prati, Giulia Rosa Policardo, Miles Hewstone, Monica Rubini
Abstract: Journal of Language and Social Psychology, Ahead of Print.
This study investigates the impact of intergroup contact of White British adults (N = 192) on the language used when describing their recent interactions with Asian British people. Specifically, we assessed the role of different forms of intergroup contact (i.e., cross-group friendship, positive and negative, and direct and extended contact) on the abstraction of negative terms used by White British people, as a linguistic measure of outgroup derogation. As expected, the frequency of direct negative intergroup contact was associated with higher negative language abstraction in depicting Asian British people. However, this association was weaker for White British people with higher levels of positive direct and extended intergroup contacts compared to those with lower levels of positive direct and extended contact. Overall, results emphasize the importance of independently analyzing the impact of positive and negative intergroup contact experiences, as well as understanding how they interact with each other in the communication of intergroup discrimination.

  • What's a Little Sarcasm Between Friends: Exploring the Sarcastic Tone of
           Voice

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Authors: Gina M. Caucci, Roger J. Kreuz, Eugene H. Buder
Abstract: Journal of Language and Social Psychology, Ahead of Print.
Tone of voice has been characterized as a cue to sarcasm. However, researchers have found conflicting evidence regarding the acoustic properties of the sarcastic tone of voice and what social factors may affect their prevalence. The current project was designed to assess whether there is a sarcastic tone of voice employed in naturalistic conversation and if it varies as a function of shared common ground. Participants were recorded in a conversational setting while engaged in tasks designed to elicit sarcasm. Results showed that spontaneous sarcastic statements had more varied pitch, lower mean amplitude, and less varied amplitude, and were spoken more slowly than literal statements that were matched by syllables and stress. In addition, friends marked their sarcasm to a greater degree compared to strangers with regard to mean F0, mean amplitude, and amplitude variability.

  • The Use and Perception of Reclaimed Group Labels for Lesbian Women and Gay
           Men

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Authors: Amanda Klysing, Maike Braun, Giulia Buscicchio, Catho Jacobs, Magdalena Formanowicz, Fabio Fasoli
Abstract: Journal of Language and Social Psychology, Ahead of Print.
This research tests whether self-labelling with a derogatory or reclaimed label is perceived as an act of reclamation. A pilot study (N = 102) identified English terms used to label lesbian women and gay men. The main study (N = 276) used a between-groups vignette design in which participants read about a woman/man self-labelling with a descriptive (lesbian/gay), reclaimed (queer), or derogatory group (dyke/fag) label. We assessed perceptions of the speaker (control/influence, agency, and efficacy) and group power, label offensiveness, and the likelihood of using the label in the future. Descriptive labels were perceived as less offensive and more likely to be used compared to reclaimed and derogatory labels. For gay men, using a derogatory label compared to other labels decreased perceived agency, but did not influence control/influence and efficacy. For lesbian women, there were no differences in perceptions of power depending on the label used.

  • Why Using Feminine Job Titles in German Is Profitable for Women: Ascribed
Linguistic Competence Enhance Prospects of Being Hired

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Authors: Magdalena Formanowicz, Lea Hodel, Sabine Sczesny
Abstract: Journal of Language and Social Psychology, Ahead of Print.
In German, symmetrical treatment of women and men through gender-fair language is well established and the use of feminine forms is evaluated positively. In the present study (N = 331), we examined the mechanisms behind this positive evaluation. Female job applicants were evaluated as more linguistically competent and as more competent in general, which translated into more favorable hiring decisions when using a feminine (vs. a masculine) job title. These results illuminate positive effects of successful language reform for women.

  • “Where Are You From'” Language Attitudes and (Non)Accommodation During
           Native–Nonnative Speaker Interactions in Germany

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

      Authors: Maria Petrou, Marko Dragojevic
Abstract: Journal of Language and Social Psychology, Ahead of Print.
Guided by the language attitudes literature and communication accommodation theory (CAT), we conducted semistructured interviews with nonnative-accented speakers in Germany to explore how they experience, interpret, and react to everyday communicative interactions with native German speakers. Irrespective of their demographics, nonnative speakers consistently expressed that native speakers construed them as foreigners and ascribed them negative stereotypic traits. Nonnative speakers reported experiencing both accommodation and nonaccommodation during their interactions with native speakers, but reports of the latter—especially underaccommodation—were more frequent. Although nonnative speakers associated their interactions with native speakers with positive affect overall, they also reported experiencing considerable emotional distress due to frequent communication difficulties and native speakers’ nonaccommodative moves, which they responded to in a variety of ways (e.g., self-blame and social withdrawal). Our findings offer several insights about native–nonnative speaker interactions from the latter's perspective and contribute to both the language attitudes and CAT literatures.

  • Generative AI Are More Truth-Biased Than Humans: A Replication and
Extension of Core Truth-Default Theory Principles

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Authors: David M. Markowitz, Jeffrey T. Hancock
Abstract: Journal of Language and Social Psychology, Ahead of Print.
Humans often display a truth-bias—the perception that others are honest independent of message veracity—but does this phenomenon extend to generative artificial intelligence (AI)' We had humans and large language models make nearly 1,000 veracity judgments across different prompts. Human detection accuracies were near chance (50%–53%) with notable truth-biases (59%–64%); AI had a substantially greater truth-bias than humans (67%–99%). GPT-4 was also truth-default, not suspecting deception when veracity assessments were unprompted. Together, people and AI judge most information to be true.

  • “Normally I Always Ask Briefly…”: How Patients and Healthcare
Professionals in Oncology Construct Sexuality as a Delicate Topic

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Authors: Irene Kelder, Annette Klarenbeek, Petra Sneijder
Abstract: Journal of Language and Social Psychology, Ahead of Print.
Oncology healthcare professionals (HCPs) and cancer patients often have difficulties in navigating conversations about sexual changes and concerns due to cancer and its treatments. The present study draws on Discursive Psychology to analyze how the topic of sexuality is raised and managed in Dutch oncological consultations. Our corpus consists of 28 audio recordings. We analyzed the discursive practices used by cancer patients and oncology HCPs and to what effect. Patients, on the one hand, employ vagueness, pronouns, and ellipses, while HCPs attribute talk to others and use generalizations and speech perturbations. Through these practices they collectively keep the topic of sexuality at a distance, thereby constructing it as a delicate topic. Moreover, we explicate the norms related to sexual behavior that cancer patients and oncology HCPs orient to in their talk. Finally, we address ways in which oncology HCPs can open the door on discussing sexual changes with their patients.

  • It's in the Syllabus: The Relationship Between Syllabi Word Use and
           Teaching Evaluations

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Authors: Joanne F. Zinger, Diane J. Lee, Charlie C. Su
Abstract: Journal of Language and Social Psychology, Ahead of Print.
The authors analyzed 1,472 course syllabi written by 611 professors to determine whether communion-related and/or agency-related word use in professors’ syllabi predicted those same professors’ end-of-semester teaching evaluations. Linguistic inquiry and word count (LIWC) analyses revealed that professors who used more communal language—including third person plural pronouns (e.g., we), social words (e.g., discussion), and positive emotion words (e.g., please)—received significantly higher teaching evaluations, but agentic language did not significantly predict evaluation scores.

  • Do Accents Speak Louder Than Words' Perceptions of Linguistic Speech
           Characteristics on Deception Detection

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Authors: Lyndsay R. Woolridge, Amy-May Leach, Chelsea Blake, Elizabeth Elliott
Abstract: Journal of Language and Social Psychology, Ahead of Print.
Using videotaped interviews of beginner, intermediate, and native English speakers, we examined whether observers’ perceptions of linguistic measures of accentedness, temporal fluency, lexicogrammar, and comprehensibility influenced their deception detection. We found that observers could detect differences in speech characteristics between proficiency levels, and that they were less able to detect deception among beginner speakers compared to intermediate and native speakers. Beginner speakers were also afforded more of a truth bias compared to intermediate, but not native speakers. Interestingly, observers’ backgrounds, including prior exposure to non-native speech, did not influence their judgments. Rather, observers’ discrimination and response bias appeared to be most affected by speakers’ fluency and comprehensibility, respectively. This study is one of the first to separate and directly compare perceptions of linguistic characteristics and their role in deception detection. Findings raise questions about equitable deception detection in legal settings.

  • When “Sometimes” Means “Often”: How Stereotypes Affect
           Interpretations of Quantitative Expressions

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Authors: Camiel J. Beukeboom, Jesper van der Meer, Christian Burgers
Abstract: Journal of Language and Social Psychology, Ahead of Print.
Two experiments investigated whether interpretations of quantitative expressions about described actors’ behaviors are influenced by stereotypic expectancies. Participants rated sentences containing frequency adverbs describing either stereotype-consistent or stereotype-inconsistent behaviors. Results showed that recipients inferred a higher numerical frequency when sentences described stereotype-consistent (vs inconsistent) behaviors. These effects of stereotype consistency were stronger for high (vs low) degree frequency adverbs. The findings show how neutral statements about a person can be interpreted as stereotype-confirming information and thus contribute to stereotype maintenance.

  • Are Women Brave or Braver Than Men' Judgments of Implicit and Explicit
           Intergroup Comparisons

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Authors: Alexandra Lux, Susanne Bruckmüller, Vera Hoorens
Abstract: Journal of Language and Social Psychology, Ahead of Print.
People learn about social groups by reading and hearing verbal statements. We investigated if the perceived truth and acceptability of such statements depend on whether they are implicitly vs. explicitly comparative (e.g., “Women are brave” vs. “Women are braver than men”). Participants (Study 1: Ns = 259; Study 2: N = 246) rated the truth, acceptability, familiarity, and positivity of implicitly vs. explicitly comparative, stereotypical vs. counter-stereotypical statements about positive vs. negative features. Consistent with an Etiquette Hypothesis, implicitly (vs. explicitly) comparative statements about positive features were judged as truer and more acceptable, presumably because they adhered better to a positivity norm. Consistent with a Fluency Hypothesis, stereotypical explicitly (vs. implicitly) comparative statements about age groups were judged as truer, presumably because of higher ease-of-processing. Thus, mechanisms affecting judgments vary somewhat with the groups compared. We discuss the role of metacognitive and normative processes in stereotype maintenance and stereotype change.

  • Code-Mixing in Promotional Materials for Tourism: Effects of Format on
Processing Fluency and Interest in Cultural Activities

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

      Authors: Jessica Gasiorek, Marko Dragojevic
Abstract: Journal of Language and Social Psychology, Ahead of Print.
We examined the effects of English-Hawaiian code-mixing in promotional materials for tourist activities on audiences’ message processing and interest in the activities promoted, and whether these outcomes depended on the format of translations for code-mixed terms. We found that code-mixing both disrupted fluency for potential tourists—which indirectly diminished interest—and boosted their interest in advertised cultural activities. These countervailing effects largely offset each other, although materials that included narrative translations of Hawaiian terms ultimately promoted greater interest than English-only texts.

  • Politicization of Immigration and Language Use in Political Elites: A
           Study of Spanish Parliamentary Speeches

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Authors: Berta Chulvi, Mariangeles Molpeceres, María F. Rodrigo, Alejandro H. Toselli, Paolo Rosso
Abstract: Journal of Language and Social Psychology, Ahead of Print.
This study uses natural language processing (NLP) tools to analyze how politicians recreate the stereotype of immigrants in the Spanish Parliament. An interdisciplinary approach from computational linguistics and social psychology has been used to construct a variety of indices about content and linguistic styles. The analysis of 2,516 parliamentary interventions about immigration delivered between 1996 and 2016 by representatives of the two political parties that alternated in power during that period (conservative Popular Party and Spanish Socialist Party) shows that both the rhetorical strategy to present immigrants as “victims” or as a “threat” and the language style that politicians use reveal an interaction between the ideology of the party and the party's political position in government or in the opposition. Results also suggest some changes over time in the polarization and politicization of the debate about immigration.

  • Words for Sale: Linguistic Complexity Associates with Higher Housing
           Prices in Online Realty Advertisements

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

      Authors: David M. Markowitz
Abstract: Journal of Language and Social Psychology, Ahead of Print.
Prior work suggests when instrumental goals are salient, linguistic complexity associates with positive behavioral outcomes compared to linguistic simplicity. The current work tested this idea using descriptions from over 1,000 online realty advertisements to associate with housing prices. The evidence suggested linguistic complexity (e.g., fewer common words, more analytic writing, and less readable writing) indeed associated with higher housing prices. These data explicated the contingent-on-effort hypothesis: linguistic complexity is favored when people value effort in a particular setting.
