  • Child emotional abuse and adult depressive symptoms in a nationally
representative sample of Black females: The moderating role of adolescent
           sleep duration.

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Emotional abuse up to age 18 is associated with depressive symptoms in adulthood, yet few studies have examined these links in Black females. Despite research documenting the moderating role of sleep duration on early adversity and mental health, no studies have examined whether sleep duration during adolescence moderates the relations between emotional abuse up to age 18 and depressive symptoms in adulthood. We examined these relations in 690 Black females from the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent Health (Add Health)—Public Use. Individuals reported the frequency of emotional abuse up to age 18, hours of sleep during adolescence, and depressive symptoms using the 10-item version of the Center for Epidemiological Studies Depression Scale. Only 55% of adolescents reported sleeping the recommended 8–10 hr per night. Frequent emotional abuse before age 18 years was associated with more adult depressive symptoms for those with shorter, but not longer, sleep duration. Greater attention should be placed on facilitating and promoting sleep health for Black females. (PsycInfo Database Record (c) 2024 APA, all rights reserved)

  • The moderating role of emotion regulation strategies on Asian American
parents’ discrimination experiences and mental health during the
           COVID-19 pandemic.

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Asian American parents have experienced significant stressors associated with racial discrimination and anticipatory COVID-19-related discrimination fear during the COVID-19 pandemic, which may adversely impact their mental health. Emotion regulation strategies may attenuate the negative effects of discrimination experiences on mental health, but existing findings have been inconsistent regarding the associations between these factors, particularly among the Asian American population. One hundred ninety-three Asian American parents (Mage = 40.58 years, SD = 6.42 years; 82.4% female) were assessed on their discrimination experiences (racial discrimination in the past year, COVID-19 discrimination fear), emotion regulation strategies (cognitive reappraisal, expressive suppression), and mental health (depression, anxiety). Significant interactions emerged between expressive suppression and racial discrimination in the past year on depression (b = .02, p = .006) and anxiety (b = .03, p < .001). Cognitive reappraisal did not significantly moderate the associations between discrimination experiences and mental health. Results indicated that greater use of expressive suppression exacerbated the adverse effects of racial discrimination on the mental health of Asian American parents. These findings inform research and practice regarding the deleterious effects of racial discrimination and the differential impact of using various emotion regulation strategies on the mental health of Asian American parents. • Biracial, Black, and proud: Can racial pride protect Biracial–Black
young people from identity invalidation and depressive symptoms'

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: A growing body of theory and research suggests that racial identity invalidation (RII)—the active denial of a person’s racial identity and/or belonging to the racial group(s) they identify with—may play an important role in the mental health problems that Biracial Black–White youth face. However, research has yet to explore this empirically. The purpose of this study was to address this gap by examining whether RII was associated with depressive symptoms among Biracial Black–White adolescents and emerging adults (N = 713; 61% male; M = 18.40, SD = 3.71). From an intersectional and strengths-based lens, we also explore if (a) Biracial and Black pride individually or collectively moderate the relationship between RII and depressive symptoms and (b) if any of these associations differ by gender. The analyses included two hierarchical linear regressions (one for girls and one for boys) that were conducted using Model 3 of the PROCESS Macro in SPSS. The results indicated that RII was associated with depression symptoms for all participants. We also found several significant interaction effects illustrating that Biracial and Black pride both played a meaningful role in the relationship between RII and the mental health of the participants, but different patterns emerged for girls and boys. Collectively, the results position RII as a salient risk factor for Biracial Black–White adolescents and emerging adults while also illuminating the promotive and protective power of racial pride. The implications for research and practice are discussed. (PsycInfo Database Record (c) 2024 APA, all rights reserved)

  • To social distance or to not social distance' COVID-19 social impact and
safety profiles, social determinants, and mental health of Black adults.

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: The impact of COVID-19 on Black adults’ social networks and their perceptions of the safety of social gatherings are intertwined. Yet, we know little about the role of this intersection and social determinants on Black adults’ mental health. The goal of this study was to examine profiles of COVID-19 impact and safety for Black adults in the United States, their association with mental health, and the role of sociodemographic, health, and employment social determinants. We used latent class analysis and data from Black adults from the nationally representative survey of the Understanding Coronavirus in America Study (January–February 2021; N = 593) to construct profiles and test associations between profiles, social determinants, and mental health. Black adults in the low visitation safety profile had worse mental health than those in the high home safety profile. Older, retired, and insured Black adults were less likely to be impacted by COVID-19. Both the impact of COVID-19 on social networks and perceptions of safety of engaging with others are important for Black adults’ mental health. Age, retirement, and health insurance play a role. Reducing distress and social isolation from COVID-19 impact and safety fears may bolster the mental health of Black adults. (PsycInfo Database Record (c) 2024 APA, all rights reserved)

  • Relationships between sleep duration and health among U.S. adults with a
history of household incarceration during childhood.

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: The rate of incarceration in the United States has increased at an alarming rate in the past 30 years and thus so has the number of children having a household member incarcerated (referred to as household incarceration). Associations between experiencing household incarceration in childhood and later negative health and developmental outcomes are well-documented; however, the underlying mechanisms linking this childhood stressor and adult outcomes have been less well studied. Using state Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System survey data (N = 145,102), this study examines how experiencing household incarceration during childhood is associated with mental and physical health in adulthood and mediational pathways through suboptimal sleep (short or long sleep). Results indicate there were significant indirect effects of household incarceration to physical and mental distress through short sleep (≤ 6 hr per 24 hr) and long sleep (≥ 10 hr per 24 hr), and a significant indirect effect of household incarceration to body mass index through short sleep. Findings from the present study highlight indirect pathways through which household incarceration in childhood is linked with sleep health in adulthood and, in turn, to negative mental and physical health. • Improving feeling of control and trust in interpreter-mediated mental
           health consultations.

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Language barriers are among the most critical factors in health care disparities. Low language proficiency is consistently associated with a high prevalence and severity of mental health disorder symptoms. Despite the advantages of working with an interpreter, most practitioners report difficulties, especially with trust and the feeling of control. The main objective of this exploratory qualitative intervention research is to examine the impact of training when working with interpreters and their inclusion in follow-ups. This impact is evaluated in the changes in feelings of control and trust for the practitioners who received the training, for the trained interpreters included in follow-ups and for the patients of these follow-ups. Semistructured interviews were conducted with individuals involved in five follow-ups at four public mental health clinics in Paris, France. The project had two phases: before (N = 18) and a few months after (N = 12) the training. Interviews were transcribed and thematically analyzed. Before the training, practitioners perceived the potential for collaboration with interpreters and the complexity of triadic consultations. Interpreters expressed irritation and disappointment at the lack of recognition, and patients seemed confident because they had already built a relationship with practitioners. After the training and inclusion of interpreters, trust is better established between interpreters and practitioners, which has substantial effects. All the protagonists state that trust positively impacts the relationship with patients and the therapeutic process. Although some practitioners still doubt the sessions’ control, the intervention helps them to gain knowledge and critically examines their clinical modus operandi. • Differences in gambling disorder recovery capital toolkits in mothers
           versus childless women.

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: This study focused on mothers and childless women in recovery from a gambling disorder (GD) in the context of risk society. Mothers with GD suffer from dual social stigma as gamblers and as women who put their children at risk. Mothers in “risk society” tend to recognize that their choices can affect their children’s future. The recovery capital (RC) toolkit comprises internal and external resources and barriers enacted in recovery. This longitudinal study: (a) compared the RC toolkits of mothers versus childless women and their effects on these women’s dropout and relapse rates; (b) explored the resources and barriers that predict dropout and relapse in each group. Analysis of the clinical data of 211 women with GD (N = 146 mothers) who received cognitive behavioral therapy for 16 weeks in Spain indicated that mothers reported lower levels of education and were from more disadvantaged socioeconomic groups, were older, and developed gambling-related problems in older age. Mothers had significantly lower relapse rates but not lower dropout rates. There were more personal predictors of dropout among childless women, whereas low levels of family support and the absence of gambling debts predicted dropout in the mothers’ group. These findings were interpreted by combining the concepts of risk society and recovery capital in action, highlight the differences between resources and barriers in the RC toolkits used by mothers versus childless women and their interplay with the sociocultural contexts of risk society and childfree lifestyles. Therapists and policymakers should consider these differences during recovery. (PsycInfo Database Record (c) 2024 APA, all rights reserved)

  • The power of knowledge: How mental health literacy can overcome barriers
           to seeking help.

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Mental health literacy (MHL) predicts help-seeking attitudes. However, the relationship between components of MHL and help-seeking attitudes has not been thoroughly examined. This study aims to examine whether mental illness stigma, help-seeking efficacy, and maintenance of positive mental health mediated the relationship between recognition of mental disorders and help-seeking attitudes, using a meta-analytic structural equation modeling (MASEM) approach. A comprehensive literature search was conducted to gather relevant studies (111 articles with 118 independent samples), and their data (k = 185) were analyzed using MASEM. Reducing mental illness stigma or increasing help-seeking efficacy may be effective strategies for promoting help-seeking behaviors among individuals who recognize mental disorders, while the maintenance of positive mental health did not significantly mediate the relationship between recognition of mental disorders and help-seeking attitudes. These findings suggest that reducing stigma or increasing help-seeking efficacy may be an effective strategy for promoting help-seeking behaviors among individuals who can identify mental disorders. The use of MASEM in this study highlights the importance of integrating multiple studies to understand the complex relationship between MHL components and help-seeking attitudes. • Evaluating skills for psychological recovery with gunshot injury survivors
in a hospital-based early intervention program.

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Gun violence is a serious public health problem that places surviving victims at increased risk for a variety of mental health problems, including posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and depression. Recognizing that many gunshot injury survivors lack access to mental health care in the early aftermath of a shooting, there has been growing interest in the use of early, preventive mental health interventions to help prevent long-term mental health complications like PTSD as part of routine care for survivors in acute medical settings, where initial outreach to survivors may be more successful. This study evaluates clinical outcomes associated with one such early intervention—Skills for Psychological Recovery (SPR)—provided to gunshot injury survivors as part of a hospital-based early intervention program embedded in a Level 1 trauma center in the Midwestern United States. Clinic data from 100 survivors (74.0% male, 78.0% Black/African American) who received SPR were included in the present study. Results suggest that receiving SPR in the early aftermath of a shooting is associated with statistically significant reductions in both PTSD, F(1, 26.77) = 22.49, p < .001, and depression, F(1, 29.99) = 6.49, p = .016, symptoms. Outcomes did not vary as a function of either PTSD risk status or intervention delivery method (i.e., in-person, telehealth). These findings support the effectiveness and acceptability of SPR as an early intervention for gunshot injury survivors when delivered as part of a hospital-based early intervention program. • Minority stress and mental health in gay and lesbian youth: A comparative
           study of Italy and Spain.

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: The present study was carried out based on the minority stress model. The purpose was to compare Italian and Spanish gay and lesbian youth on minority stressors and mental health outcomes and test the minority stress model in Italy and Spain. The sample consisted of 490 participants (307 Italians, Mage = 25.30 and 183 Spanish, Mage = 27.57). They completed an online questionnaire measuring everyday discrimination, coming out to family members, coming out to friends/one’s social network, internalized sexual stigma, depression, and anxiety. A multivariate analysis of covariance was performed to explore the effect of nationality on all measures. Structural equation modeling was applied to test the direct and indirect (through internalized sexual stigma) effects of stressors on mental health outcomes. The results demonstrate an impact of nationality on three dimensions: Spanish youth presented higher levels of everyday discrimination, while Italian youth had lower levels of both coming out to family members and coming out to friends/one’s social network. Further, in both countries, all stressors had both direct and indirect (through internalized sexual stigma) associations with depression and anxiety. These findings have some social implications: studying the effect of nationality can be useful in suggesting changes in political and social macrosystems. Additionally, studying the associations among these variables is helpful for intervening more efficiently, for example, clinically, on the impact of minority stress.
