  • Validating the Teacher Version of Pediatric Symptom Checklist–17 in
           Chinese Elementary Schools

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Authors: Jin Liu, Ruyi Ding, Tuo Liu, Wei He, Yu Bao, Ruiqin Gao, Sarah K. Hood
Abstract: Behavioral Disorders, Ahead of Print.
Before adopting a scale for a new culture, researchers should conduct systematic translation procedures and evaluations to ensure its psychometric quality. The Pediatric Symptom Checklist–17 (PSC-17) is a brief and valid scale developed by American researchers to evaluate children’s emotional, attentional, and behavioral problems. This study aimed to adapt the PSC-17 to a Chinese version for use in elementary school settings. In this process, 74 teachers rated 666 students using the PSC-17. These students were also assessed using the Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire (SDQ) and additional questions (e.g., teachers’ referral status and demographic information). The scale was successfully translated into simplified Chinese using a standard procedure. Factor analysis supported a general factor model for the PSC-17. Furthermore, decent criterion validity and internal consistency were verified. Finally, a cut-off score of 17 was established, slightly higher than the original cut-off score of 15. We concluded that the PSC-17 is a high-quality screening tool in Chinese elementary schools. The findings are particularly relevant to researchers investigating children’s emotional, attentional, and behavioral development within the Chinese cultural context.

  • Paraprofessionals’ Implementation of Constant Time Delay Procedures With
Elementary Students With High-Intensity Behavioral Support Needs

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Authors: Allison M. Kroesch, Sarah Southall, Nancy Welsh-Young, Katherine N. Peeples
Abstract: Behavioral Disorders, Ahead of Print.
Paraprofessionals play a significant role in the education system. However, they often need more training on specific instructional strategies to use with the students they work with. In this study, we trained two paraprofessionals working in a self-contained elementary classroom for students with high-intensity behavioral support needs. Each paraprofessional used constant time delay to support students’ learning to read grade-level sight and science words. Paraprofessionals also gathered maintenance and generalization sessions using individualized social stories created by the classroom teacher. Not only did the four student participants meet mastery of their personalized word sets but paraprofessionals also implemented all phases with high fidelity. We discuss limitations, implications for practice, and recommendations for future research.

  • Knowledge, Application, and Self-Efficacy in Implementing Behavior
Management Strategies: A Brief Report on Preliminary Findings From
           Secondary Data

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Authors: Stacy N. McGuire, Yan Xia, Hedda Meadan
Abstract: Behavioral Disorders, Ahead of Print.
Students with mental health needs, behavioral support needs, and/or emotional disturbance can engage in internalizing behaviors, externalizing behaviors, or both. Preservice and induction phase elementary general education teachers are reported to have limited education in providing evidence-based behavior management strategies, especially for students who engage in internalizing and/or externalizing behaviors. There is little understanding as to the differences in elementary general education teachers’ knowledge, application, and self-efficacy in applying evidence-based behavior management strategies between preservice teachers, first-year teachers, second-year teachers, and third-year teachers. The purpose of this preliminary secondary data analysis was to examine differences in elementary general education teacher knowledge, application, and self-efficacy in evidence-based behavior management strategies from preservice to induction phase teaching. Results indicated third-year teachers had significantly less behavior management knowledge than preservice teachers. All other results were nonsignificant; however, there were practical differences when comparing the four groups on the knowledge and application measures. Implications for findings indicate the need for induction programs to focus on evidence-based behavior management strategies to support the development of behavior management for induction phase elementary education teachers as they progress through their first 3 years of teaching.

  • Evaluating the Clinical Utility of the MAYSI-2 Among African American Male
           Juvenile Offenders

Authors: Brittany LaBelle, Joseph Calvin Gagnon, Diana Joyce-Beaulieu, Jodi Lane, Nicholas Gage, John Kranzler, David E. Houchins, Holly B. Lane, Erica D. McCray, Richard G. Lambert, Shelbretta Ball
Abstract: Behavioral Disorders, Ahead of Print.
This study examined the clinical utility of the Massachusetts Youth Screening Instrument-Second Version (MAYSI-2) among African American (AA) incarcerated youth and used White incarcerated youth as a comparison group. Data were analyzed for 314 incarcerated youth (193 AA offenders and 121 White offenders) of ages 13–17 years that were adjudicated delinquent from a Southeastern United States medium security residential facility. Seven logistic regression and receiver operating characteristic curve (ROC) models were built to determine whether the MAYSI-2 subscales accurately identify committed AA male incarcerated youth who have mental illnesses on file. Analyses also examined how well the MAYSI-2 subscales identify specific mental illnesses among AA-committed male incarcerated youth. Results demonstrated that no MAYSI-2 subscales accurately identified and categorized AA-committed male incarcerated youth that have mental disorders, and only two subscales (Alcohol/Drug Use, Depressed/Anxious) identified and categorized White committed male incarcerated youth that have mental disorder. Additional results and implications for research and practice are provided.

Abstract: Behavioral Disorders, Ahead of Print.
The recent increase in school shootings has brought about an urgency to renew efforts to understand and reduce them. In this article, the Division for Emotional and Behavioral Health reviews what is known about school shootings, including data related to incidence and shooter profiles. In addition, we describe responses to shootings, accompanied by data on effectiveness, when available. We conclude with recommendations for practice and a call for increased and rigorous research designed to understand and prevent school shootings.

  • A Research-Based Literacy Instruction MTSS for Juvenile Correctional
           Facilities

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Authors: David E. Houchins, Richard G. Lambert, Christopher Henrich, Joseph Calvin Gagnon
Abstract: Behavioral Disorders, Ahead of Print.
A major challenge for juvenile correctional facilities (JCF) is providing literacy instruction to a transitory student population with a wide range of literacy abilities. The purpose of this study was to identify unique literacy profiles of students in long-term JCF taking into consideration their reading abilities, language abilities, intelligence quotient (IQ), disability classification, age, and grade level. Using latent profile analyses with a sample of 370 youth, we identified three distinct Classes. Three ability groups of students (average literacy abilities, below-average literacy abilities, substantially below-average literacy abilities) were identified. Thirty-six percent performed at the average level, 55% performed below grade level; and 8% had substantial literacy deficits with an overrepresentation of students with emotional disturbance (ED) and specific learning disability (SLD). Findings provide the foundation for an evidence-based multi-tiered system of supports literacy framework within JCF. Instructional implications concerning the provision of English Language Arts in JCF are provided.

  • High-Probability Request Sequence to Increase Compliance of Children With
           Autism Spectrum Disorder: A Meta-Analysis

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Authors: Kubra Sayar, Emrah Gulboy, Serife Yucesoy-Ozkan, Muhammet Sait Baran
Abstract: Behavioral Disorders, Ahead of Print.
Non-compliance is a challenge for practitioners serving children with and without disabilities. Many interventions have been developed to increase compliance. High-probability request sequences (HPRS), an antecedent-based intervention that is based on behavioral momentum theory, is one way to increase compliant behavior. HPRS includes the presentation of two-to-five easy or known tasks with a high probability of compliance immediately before requesting tasks with a low probability of compliance. The purpose of the current meta-analysis was to review the literature in the last 40 years on high-p request sequences as an intervention to improve compliance in children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Specifically, we examined the methodological rigor of the high-p single-case research for students with autism, identified the descriptive characteristics of these studies, and estimated treatment effects with Tau-U to determine whether HPRS is an evidence-based practice (EBP) for increasing compliance in children with ASD. Our results showed that HPRS is a very effective practice in increasing compliance in children with ASD (Tau-U = .87) and a promising EBP for improving compliance in children with ASD. Implications for future research and practice are discussed.

  • The Relation Between Classroom Adversity and Students’ Problem Behavior
as a Function of Teachers’ Emotional Support

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Authors: Kristen L. Granger, Jason C. Chow, Leigh McLean, Natalie Vallarta, Emma Dear, Kevin S. Sutherland
Abstract: Behavioral Disorders, Ahead of Print.
The purpose of this study was to examine the relation between teachers’ reports of classroom adversity, a measure of classroom hardship, and student problem behavior in a sample of students with or at risk of emotional/behavioral disorders. We also examined the extent to which this relation varied as a function of multiple domains of classroom quality. A series of multiple regression models, adjusting for the nesting of students within classrooms, were conducted. Models revealed a significant effect of the interaction between classroom adversity and classroom emotional support on teachers’ reports of student problem behaviors. This effect indicated that in low-adversity classrooms, teachers differed in their reports of students’ problem behaviors depending on their level of emotional support. In high-adversity classrooms, however, teachers’ reports of students’ problem behaviors were relatively similar regardless of their level of emotional support. Findings suggest classroom adversity is likely an important contextual factor to consider when examining student outcomes and that teacher emotional support may mitigate the influence of classroom adversity. We conclude with a discussion of the implications of this work for research and practice.

  • Empowering Teachers With Low-Intensity Interventions: Using the Caught
Being Good Game to Promote Positive Behavior Among Students With ADHD

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

      Authors: Keetam D. F. Alkahtani
Abstract: Behavioral Disorders, Ahead of Print.
Students with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) may engage in disruptive classroom behaviors. The Caught Being Good Game (CBGG) has been identified as an intervention for managing class-wide behaviors. The purpose of the current study was to evaluate the effect of the CBGG in increasing class-wide academically engaged behavior (AEB) and decreasing disruptive behaviors (DB) among target students diagnosed with ADHD. This study used a multiple baseline design across three elementary classrooms. The results indicated that all participants’ AEB increased when the CBGG was implemented. The results also suggested that the CBGG decreases DB among target students diagnosed with ADHD. Using the CBGG as part of classroom management could reduce the time teachers spend managing student behavior and increase the time they spend on teaching.

  • Perspectives of Behavior Analysts and Mental Health Specialists on
Collaborating to Support Students with Intensive Intervention Needs

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Authors: Marney S. Pollack, Blair P. Lloyd, Gabrielle E. Crowell, Matthew A. Santini, Elizabeth E. Biggs
Abstract: Behavioral Disorders, Ahead of Print.
Interdisciplinary collaboration is critical to address the multiple and varied needs of students with social/emotional and behavioral (SEB) challenges. Yet little is known about the nature of collaboration between two specialist groups who commonly support them: behavior analysts and mental health specialists. Considering expectations for collaboration, and the potential challenges unique to this partnership, we conducted a series of interviews to explore these specialists’ experiences and perspectives around collaboration. We used a qualitative description approach, which led to identifying themes related to (a) specialists’ preparation to collaborate, (b) facilitators and barriers to effective collaboration, and (c) supports needed to collaborate more effectively in their current roles. Specialists from both groups felt their pre-service training inadequately prepared them to collaborate with one another. They identified several factors that impacted their ability to meaningfully collaborate and expressed needs for cross-discipline education, collaborative conversations, and training on “soft skills” to partner more effectively. We highlight distinct and overlapping perspectives within and across themes between behavior analysts and mental health specialists and discuss implications for improving the quality of these important partnerships.

  • Check-In/Check-Out (CICO) in High School: Results From a Small Randomized
           Controlled Trial

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Authors: K. Brigid Flannery, Mimi McGrath Kato, Angus Kittelman, Nadia Katul Sampson, Kent McIntosh
Abstract: Behavioral Disorders, Ahead of Print.
The purpose of this study was to provide initial evidence of the effectiveness of Check-In/Check-Out-High School (CICO-HS) on high school student outcomes. Check-In/Check-Out-High School is a version of CICO, an established Tier 2 intervention designed to improve student academic and social behavior, adapted to increase effectiveness and feasibility in high schools. Key adaptations in CICO-HS include increased student agency through goal setting and self-rating, and increased efficiency through use of a mobile application for data collection, progress monitoring, and family communication. This randomized controlled trial (RCT) was conducted during the 2021–2022 school year and included 14 ninth grade students in one public high school in the Pacific Northwest. Students were randomly assigned to receive CICO-HS or a waitlist/control condition. Although underpowered, the RCT results showed meaningful improvements (small to moderate effect sizes) in student attendance (unexcused tardies and absences) and teacher ratings of student academic and social behaviors. Moreover, students and school personnel rated CICO-HS components as being socially acceptable to implement in high school. Implications for future research to replicate and expand study findings and for practice to scale up CICO-HS with fidelity in high schools are discussed.

Abstract: Behavioral Disorders, Ahead of Print.
In this article, we examined predictive validity of the newly defined Student Risk Screening Scale—Internalizing and Externalizing (SRSS-IE 9, with nine items) when used by teachers for the first time, with a sample of 24,535 elementary students from 74 schools in four geographic regions. Results indicated fall externalizing and internalizing latent factors as well as subscale scores (SRSS-E5 and SRSS-I4, respectively) from the SRSS-IE 9 predicted year-end behavioral outcomes (office discipline referrals, suspensions, and nurse visits), academic outcomes (reading and math scores and course failures), as well as referrals to special education for elementary students. SRSS-IE 12 subscale scores for externalizing (SRSS-E7) and internalizing (SRSS-I5) using the original 12-item version subscales were similarly predictive of these outcomes. We discussed educational implications, limitations, and directions for future inquiry.

  • Examining Written Expression Curriculum-Based Measurement for Students
           With Emotional and Behavioral Challenges

Authors: John Elwood Romig, Hannah M. Mathews, Amanda A. Olsen
Abstract: Behavioral Disorders, Ahead of Print.
Students with emotional and behavioral challenges often struggle with writing. Curriculum-based measurement (CBM) is an assessment used for a variety of purposes including screening, progress monitoring, and data-based individualization. However, little research has examined technical properties of writing CBM data and supported inferences. This study examined criterion validity of two CBM tasks with the Test of Written Language-4 and whether writing fluency was affected by writing prompt type. Thirty-eight students in 7th-12th grades with emotional and behavioral challenges completed a descriptive writing task and a narrative writing task. Writing samples were scored for the number of words written, words spelled correctly, correct word sequences, and correct minus incorrect word sequences. Across all scoring procedures, associations between the descriptive prompt and the Test of Written Language-4 (number of words written, r = .27 [−.12, .58], words spelled correctly, r = .33 [−.05, .62]; correct word sequences, r = .38 [01, .65]; and correct minus incorrect word sequences, r = .44 [.08, .69] were stronger than associations between the narrative prompt and criterion measure.

           of 50 States

Authors: Mary Rose Sallese, Justin D. Garwood, Kimberly J. Vannest, Tammy Kolbe, Alex Carlson
Abstract: Behavioral Disorders, Ahead of Print.
The Individuals with Disabilities Education Act allows states some autonomy in altering the disability category terminology and definitions, given that the changes do not exclude students eligible under the federal language. Several states have used this flexibility for the emotional disturbance category historically. This study provides a contemporary analysis of the interstate variation in the emotional disturbance category through a comprehensive evaluation of state department education policy documents for differences in terminology, definition, and disability-specific evaluation procedures and guidance. The work is contextualized by previous reviews of similar but different purposes relevant to the time periods in which they occurred. Data from the current study show continued convergence toward the language in the federal definition. Results present notable differences related to cultural considerations, the social maladjustment exclusionary clause, and the provision of mental health services. Implications for research and policy are discussed.

  • Self-Efficacy, Burnout, and Intent to Leave for Teachers of Students With
           Emotional and Behavioral Disorders

Authors: Nelson C. Brunsting, Kristabel Stark, Elizabeth Bettini, Kathleen Lynne Lane, David James Royer, Eric Alan Common, Marcia L. Rock
Abstract: Behavioral Disorders, Ahead of Print.
Due to ongoing and severe teacher shortages, preparing and sustaining a skilled special education teacher (SET) workforce is a top policy priority. Understanding predictors of SETs’ intent to leave is crucial for policy makers and school leaders alike, as they seek to develop interventions to support retention efforts. In this study, we examined attrition intentions among SETs serving students with emotional and behavioral disorders (EBDs), using longitudinal survey data from a nationally representative sample of teachers in the 2019–2020 school year (fall-winter-spring). We measured teachers’ self-efficacy and burnout in fall, winter, and spring as well as teachers’ intent to leave in spring. We found all three dimensions of fall burnout (emotional exhaustion, depersonalization, and reduced personal accomplishment) had an indirect effect on spring intent to leave. All three dimensions of burnout in the spring predicted intent to leave, as did winter scores on depersonalization. Cross-time relationships between of dimensions of self-efficacy and burnout were revealed; however, at no timepoint was self-efficacy a significant predictor of intent to leave in spring, whether directly or indirectly. We discuss implications for both practitioners and researchers.

  • Using Performance Feedback With and Without Goal Setting on Teachers’
           Classroom Management Skills

Authors: Caitlin J. Criss, Moira Konrad, Sheila R. Alber-Morgan, Matthew E. Brock, Angie B. Harris
Abstract: Behavioral Disorders, Ahead of Print.
Although evidence-based practices for improving academic engagement for students with emotional and/or behavioral disorders (EBD) have been identified, many teachers do not implement these practices with optimal fidelity. Thus, effective strategies are needed to improve teacher fidelity. Performance feedback is an effective professional development strategy, but it is unclear whether ancillary strategies like goal setting might further improve fidelity. In this study, we evaluated the effects of email performance feedback with and without goal setting on teacher implementation of opportunities to respond and behavior-specific praise using a multiple probe design. Participants included four general and special educators at an alternative school for students with EBD. Results indicated that a combination of written performance feedback and goal setting was effective, and that performance feedback alone was also effective. We were unable to determine whether the goal-setting component strengthened the performance feedback. Teachers provided positive feedback about the utility and feasibility of performance feedback with goal setting.
