  • Historical Portrayal of Children with Disabilities and Exclusionary
           Practices in Northern Ghana

      Abstract: This manuscript is part of a bigger study on inclusionary and exclusionary practices of children with disabilities in northern Ghana. In the past, because of attitudinal, structural and cultural barriers, children with disabilities were neglected and, in some cases, even excluded completely from the society. This paper argues that while Ghana has ratified many international conventions to protect persons with disabilities, the rights of children with certain disabilities are still in danger. Applying critical ethnographic methodological lens, Erving Goffman’s stigma theory, and cultural and moral disability models, this study explores twenty-six (26) participants’ views of exclusionary practices against children with disabilities in northern Ghana. The study finds that historical portrayal of disability in northern Ghana might have serious impact on the manner children with certain disabilities are treated; the actions of medicine men/spiritualist could lead to all forms of abuse. Finally, parents and families of children with certain disabilities might be pressured to resort to a range of exclusionary practices against their own children due to stigma and pressure from the communities. The study calls for comprehensive measures and effective community sensitization activities to stop all forms of exclusionary practices against children with disabilities, especially in the rural areas of Ghana.

  • The Nurturant-Warrior Archetype: a Meeting Ground Between the Metaphors of
           Sita and Kali in Vedic Hinduism

      Abstract: The present paper attempts to trace the images of the ideal Indian woman through the two prominent female forms, i.e., Sita and Kali, mentioned in Vedic Hindu mythology. The author throws light on the status of Indian women through the contrasting symbolism of these two goddesses, who have also been symbols of heated debate among Indian feminists. The literature suggests that a submissive, chaste, devoted wife, an ideal mother, exemplified by the Indian goddess Sita, is often regarded as the most desirable ego ideal of women in Indian society. In contrast, the rebellious and destructive Indian goddess Kali has emerged as the main icon of the modern Indian feminist consciousness. Building on the relevant literature, the author highlights the intellectual and cultural tension between the contrasting ideals of women in Indian society. A meeting ground between the two opposing female archetypes is envisaged into the Nurturant-Warrior archetype. The Nurturant-Warrior archetype is substantiated through selected instances of some modern-day female icons in Indian society. Limitations and future directions are discussed at the end.

  • How Might One Live' A Social Theory of Human Motivated Behavior

      Abstract: This study aimed at inspecting problems surrounding the concept of motivation, discovering the ontological reasons behind them, providing a comprehensive definition for motivation, and introducing a new way around the controversies through a social theory of human motivated behavior. The new theory is built on Gilles Deleuze’s conceptualization of ontology and his definition of open systems, Robert Merton’s categorization of deviant behaviors, and the fact that behaviors with some preexisting goals and paths toward them precede the individuals. Based on this new social theory, every motivated behavior precedes the individuals who take them in terms of pre-established goals and paths toward them. This way, every motivated behavior in the initial stage could be of six types: structural, innovative, conforming, path-adopted, unmotived, and agentic. The new social theory does not reject the previous motivational theories and findings, but provides as open framework to actually apply them in real life situations.

  • Solidarity and Community: Collaborative Learning in Times of Crisis

      Abstract: In his writing on pedology from 1928 to 1931, Vygotsky (1998) discusses how the social environment provides the context and source for human development. During the almost century since, Vygotsky’s ideas have developed to inform our understanding of groups and institutions through Cultural Historical Activity Theory. In this paper we examine the evolution of social structures which have guided development for a community of Vygotskian scholars in the Asia Pacific region over the past two decades and how it has responded to the present crisis. In this time of crisis, where the movement has been from face-to-face to online interaction, our experience of moving between intermittent online to sustained face-to-face meeting, refracted through our understandings of Vygotsky, can inform not only present experience but also help us to think about what new structures and relationships can be created as we move beyond crisis.

  • Imagination and Narratives to Tell Stories About Natural History

      Abstract: Biology is a science that tries to explain “how” and “why” living being became what they are, in this sense, it has a historical nature. We try to discuss the tension between the concepts of “reproductive” and “productive imagination,” proposed by Paul Ricoeur, to show its importance to describe and to explain historical events and facts. Within the Ricoeur’s theory of narrative we show that, to tell a story, the imagination is necessary in at least three process: Firstly, the author reconstructs facts and actions; secondly, the author relates these elements around a plot, as necessary conditions for the formation of a coherent and meaningful sense of story; thirdly, reader engages with the story through a refiguration of it. In the light of this framework, we analyze Natural History and its usefulness to teach evolution. We denote that evolutionary stories could be an effective tool to learn about evolution. However, to fulfill this goal, evolutionary stories should use narratives not only like a simply recount of information but also to capture the imagination of readers in such a way that they are involved in and by the story, “providing oneself a figure of...” In this respect, it should be noted the risk of managing, on the one hand, the realism of facts and events and, on the other, the idealism of the narrative or the text, which could well do without “real” to present an artificial reality. We conclude that Natural History could be combine reality and imagination in order to tell and to explain biology’s big questions: “how” and “why” life became what it is.

  • Social Media and Coronavirus: Paranoid-Schizoid Technology and
           Pandemic'

      Abstract: This article draws on the psychoanalyst Melanie Klein’s ‘paranoid-schizoid position’ to discuss some exemplary social media posts about the coronavirus. I argue that posts often express experiences, thoughts, and fantasies in a schematic manner. They reproduce a paranoid-schizoid logic by which particular views on the current crisis are articulated and different ones are negated. The Kleinian framework is supplemented with Lacan’s notion of the Discourse of the Hysteric. I argue that the examples discussed in this article are instances of hysteric modes of relating to an Other (e.g. the expert) that is allegedly withholding important information from the subject. Splitting is amplified by the technological functioning of social media themselves which split users along a paranoid-schizoid dynamic for purposes of surveillance, advertising and profit maximization. I conclude by outlining steps towards the Kleinian ‘depressive position’ both in relation to how we engage with COVID-19 and social media. The depressive position acknowledges both good and bad aspects of a given situation. I further show how it can be supplemented via the Lacanian Discourse of the Analyst which includes a commitment to the limits of knowledge, certainty, and prediction.

  • COVID-19: Harbinger of a New Psychology of Religion for Postcolonial
           Societies

      Abstract: Religious practice, like every other human affair, was altered at the onset of the pandemic. The paper argues that the “home church” as a Christian expression of religiosity during Covid-19, for instance, was a signal to something new at least in the theoretical realms of religion. More strongly, it was a vindication of postcolonial native societies (of Africa) whose indigenous spiritualities were thwarted and/or abolished during the colonial era. The pandemic is theorized as a wake-up call for agency in these societies. The theorization relies upon Piaget’s psychological “techniques” of accommodation and assimilation, opening various channels to answering the questions: what was assimilated during colonialism that should have been accommodated and vice versa' And how has the pandemic uncovered that error of inversion'

  • A Hopeless Search for the Hopeless: a Literature Review of Contemporary
           Qualitative Studies on Partner Bereavement

      Abstract: This literature review examines qualitative studies on partner bereavement from the year 2000 to 2018. The aim is to investigate which perspectives, theories, and models are prominent in this research, and how contemporary sociocultural trends might be related hereto. After giving a brief account of grief research in a historical perspective with a point of departure in partner bereavement and the development of a qualitative methodology within grief research, the following five theoretical frameworks are presented on the background of a close reading of the included 18 studies: continuing bonds, meaning and narrative reconstruction, the dual process model, post-traumatic growth, and disenfranchised grief. In the discussion, I pinpoint how the popularity and influence of these frameworks are related to contemporary sociocultural tendencies and ideologies. It is suggested that a greater awareness with regard to the cultural mediation of experiences and understandings of grief would be beneficial. Specifically, I argue that all the reviewed frameworks—in different ways, remain disturbed by a contemporary inability of handling suffering and impossibilities.

  • Locus of Control in Dynamic Settings: a Semiotic Extension of an Old
           Theory

      Abstract: Psychological theorizing has for many years been captured in dualistic thinking that axiomatically enforces a break—either/or mentality—into the study of systemic phenomena. This includes the topic of control of reinforcement (locus of control—LoC—a classic research tradition introduced by Julian Rotter in 1966). From a systemic perspective, we need to overcome the limits of seeing LoC of either “internal” or “external” (or “primary” versus “secondary”). Thereby, by offering a dynamic understanding of LoC incorporating the complexity of the contextually situated and semiotically mediating human mind, the limits of the original model will be exemplified and overcome. This dynamic approach starts from cultural psychology and follows the ideas of individual meaning making processes through the personal past and available signs in semiotic mediation. A person develops expectancies for acting in situations through contextually situated experiences in the past while facing the future. Previously this generalization of expectancies was assumed to be inductively generalized through accumulation of experienced reinforcements in similar situations. In the new dynamic model, generalization of expectancies develops through abduction from earlier experiences in a specific context. This allows for a dynamic generalization of expectancies, thus potentially inhabiting a balanced LoC belief of both external and internal LoC at a given time on the basis of the situationally subjectively perceived impact of the past and present situation.   • Memory, Imagination, and Meaning-Making in Learning Scientific Concepts: a
           Case Study About the Concept of Substance in Chemistry

      Abstract: To understand the relation between memory, imagination, and learning, I consider that it is necessary to adopt alternative models for these cognitive processes. For instance, in learning, instead of the traditional view that knowledge is transferred from the teacher to the students, I adopt the sociocultural constructivist model, in which learning is a meaning-making process with a social nature mediated by signs. In regard to imagination, I consider it as a higher mental function that creates possible scenarios in the Zone of Proximal Development for the future. At last, for memory, I highlight the theory of remembering, in which memory is understood as a meaning-making reconstruction process. This reconstruction is characterized by a few features, such as transformations, transferences, elaborations, and importations. In this chapter, I present a few illustrations of the relation between memory, imagination, and meaning-making (focusing on remembering) from a case in which two students try to answer questions about chemical substances by recalling information from prior sources and knowledge. The analysis showed that the building of meanings occurs from modifications in memory through the emergence of remembering features (transformation, importation, transference, and elaboration) and new meanings appear on the Zone of Proximal Development projected by imagination. Thus, it is possible to understand how students build new meanings about scientific concepts by analyzing how they remember prior knowledge and prospect for new meanings through imagination.

  • Lazy Charity in the School’s Context from Paulo Freire’s
           Perspective

      Abstract: By studying Paulo Freire’s perspective, I started to contextualize his words from a new point of view. Due to what I have learnt along this writing, I hereby intend to demonstrate how the lazy charity serves as an extension of nowadays’ society’s logic capitalism, with the permissive intrusion of values in education due to individualism, that contributes to inequality. School is seen by society as an establishment that has the role to provide knowledge to students, combined with the mentoring of certain behaviors, which are expected according to the societal project. These involve cultural behaviors and values that are shared and disseminated in each society. When schools cannot deal with such responsibilities, there are some institutions that offer to “provide support.” These initiatives announce the begging of a kind of privatization that does not recognize the differences of each community or self-initiative. It is necessary to overcome naïve consciousness for the conscious process to occur. This conscious process targets freedom and comes to life through educational practice, reaching both students and teachers. Therefore, overcoming naïve consciousness is indispensable during the process, for it makes the practice of Paulo Freire’s critical conscientization possible. As aforementioned, such practice has to be done by educating students and teachers, so all people involved can aim on the same purpose. That is why lazy charity cannot be understood as freedom, but as the cage.

  • Subverted Crisis and Critique

      Abstract: The aim of this paper is to reflect on historical vicissitudes of relationship between crisis and critique. Starting point is an observational diagnosis of present socio-political conditions, which have transformed crisis from a turning point into a continuation and radicalization of the existing order. In an attempt to understand the ongoing subversion of transformative potentials of crisis, a similar process of pacification and subversion of critique in dominant theoretical paradigms will be examined. It will be argued that both socio-political and main-stream theoretical processes work toward pacification of the status quo that raises both existential and theoretical concerns. In order to support the claim that a different relationship between crisis and critique is possible, it will be referred to Reinhart Koselleck’s seminal study, Critique and crisis (1959), where it is shown how absolutist state generated its critique by Enlightenment and then Enlightenment conditioned radical changes in form of French Revolution. Relying on that example, the following questions will be raised: What kind of historical structures have been lost since times which generated Enlightenment as a critical stance' What kind of theoretical tools are we missing in post-Enlightenment post-modern times in order to conceptualize and condition radical changes' What is the role of psychological theorizing in sustaining adaptation to the existing order instead of arguing and demanding its radical change' How to reclaim transformative potentials of critique and crisis'

  • William James and the Sustainable Transformation of Values, with a Case
           Study for Rethinking the American Dream

      Abstract: This article addresses the call of the Psychology of Global Crises conference for linkage of academic work with social issues in three parts: First, examples from conference participants with their mix of bold calls for social transformation and realization of limits, a combination that generated few clear paths to achieving them. Second, presentation of Jamesian practical idealism with psychological insights for moving past impediments blocking implementation of ideals. And third, a case study of impacts from the most recent prominent crisis, the global pandemic of 2020, which threatens to exacerbate the many crises that had already been plaguing recent history. The tentacles of COVID’s impact into so many problems, starting with economic impacts from virus spread, present an opportunity to rethink the hope for constant economic growth, often expressed as the American Dream, an outlook that has driven so many of the problems surging toward crises. Jamesian awareness of the construction of ideological differences and encouragement of listening to those in disagreement provide not political solutions, but psychological preludes toward improvements in the face of crises.

  • An Informal Education Intervention in Response to the Covid-19 Pandemic:
           Homework Mentorships in a Berlin Refugee Shelter

      Abstract: The Covid-19 pandemic and resulting damage is often portrayed in staggering numbers and statistics. This article offers, by contrast, a personal and qualitative account of employees, volunteers, and young residents at a refugee home in Berlin, Germany. Through the story of a boy who has spent the past 4 years in several of Berlin’s 84 remaining refugee accommodations, we examine the inequalities that already existed in Germany and how the pandemic has exacerbated them. To provide ample context, we critically assess the so-called Welcome Classes that children and teens have been attending since their arrival to the country in or around 2015 and argue that the segregation experienced at school mirrors the isolation from the host society that refugees and people seeking asylum are subjected to residentially. We then present an emergency response to school closures: A digital homework mentorship program designed to mitigate the heightened barriers to social interaction and access to education brought about by the pandemic. We explore the sociocultural theory underpinning the program, describe its methods, and offer a qualitative evaluation of the results. Finally, we discuss how the informal education intervention helps fill gaps in the system, offering an approach that can be used going forward to promote learning, social-emotional development, and inclusion of young people with migration and refugee backgrounds.

  • Dialogue Around Favors: Introducing a Field Model of How Service is
           Psychologically Possible

      Abstract: Our everyday lives are full of encounters that we classify as services. They include dialogues with others that are socially normative and personally meaningful. By following the historical growth of humanity, it becomes increasingly more crucial to elaborate the interconnectivity of human interactions. While experiencing our everyday life, we are generating meaning that is used for interactions with other beings, “interpretation and interaction.” By elaborating the meaning of dialogue and the historical roots of service, it seems crucial to point out the baseline meaning behind both constructs and how these can be seen as identical phenomenon. Such a bonding of constructs is allowing us to reconstruct the generated meaning in form of a new model: the “Human Identification Dialogue” (HID), highlighting the core dimensions of both constructions. The HID can be described as connection and extension of the strongly influencing theoretical understandings, about dialogues, by Bühler (1934) and Rommetveit in (The Dialogical Alternative: Towards a Theory of Language and Mind, 19, 44, 1992). Furthermore, the cultural psychological view allows us to include the importance of individual perception in a core process of the business field. A process that will be bonded in simple everyday life examples, able to visualize the importance of the phenomena, while underlining its potential and characteristics. In this context, the cultural psychological field and the service psychology will be connected by the basic Semiotic understanding of the core process dialogue.

  • The Mystery of Remote Communality: University Students’ and Teachers’
           Perceptions During the COVID-19 Pandemic

      Abstract: The aim of this study was to examine how the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic affected the communality among university personnel and students. Herein, we report the findings from a northern Finnish university in which student (mean number of participants, n = 339) and staff (mean number of participants, n = 133) perceptions and experiences were surveyed. The data (gathered between March 2020 and June 2021 in 7 surveys) included responses to questions about satisfaction with remote and hybrid work and communality. In addition, as the focus of the analysis in this research, we collected the participants’ descriptions of their experiences and thoughts through open-ended questions. The sense of communality among the students, students and teachers, and staff differed, but the appreciation for flexible interactions and availability was similar between the groups. This study discusses the importance of retaining a sense of communality during and after abnormal times on the basis of the reported findings.

  • Baby Mimesis with Touch Screens: Between Materiality and the Individuation

      Abstract: In this paper, we focus on the mimesis of babies with a screen in a social context. The paper explores how babies interact with the screen interface in a social context as a dynamic process between materiality and individuation. The theoretical framework deals with mimesis, the technological interface, and the individualisation process. The research question is do babies interacting with a smartphone screen activate a mimetic social or material dimension at the service of their individuation' A natural micro-observation was video collected in the home setting. It involved a grandmother over 65 years old and her 14-month-old granddaughter, interacting jointly on a regular smartphone. A non-anthropocentric methodology was used, linking sense-making to the contextualised experience of the body-environment system. Two main topical episodes will be presented as an illustration. Circular redundancy and effective touching are the two dimensions analysed. The analysis of the socio-material baby niche, enacting distributed cognition with the technological interface, opens some discussion toward a postmodern perspective.

  • The Early Modern Attack on Teleology and the Politics of Contemporary
           Psychology: Intellectual Roots of Current Dilemmas

      Abstract: The paper takes up the relationship between teleological explanation and psychology. Teleological explanation—given in terms of purpose, intention, and value—is generally viewed unfavorably in psychology and science broadly. Biophysical mechanistic explanations are generally regarded as more scientific. The paper argues that the contemporary hostility to teleology needs to be understood in the context of the early modern political-philosophical struggles against organized religion. European philosophers of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries saw that teleology was an essential part of how organized religion justified its political power. René Descartes and Baruch Spinoza are analyzed as philosophers who both attacked teleology, and contributed to the critique of organized religion. The early modern attack on teleology and the development of mechanistic science thus both had political as well as philosophical motivations. The tension between teleological and mechanistic explanation is shown to persist into the present, with the work of Carl Rogers and B.F. Skinner used as more recent examples. Rogers argued that humanistic psychology required a teleological understanding of both human and cosmic processes, whereas Skinner staunchly denied the reality of teleology and unfailingly championed behavioral, mechanistic science. Both Rogers’ and Skinner’s claims, moreover, can be traced to the early modern attack on teleology. It is then shown that contemporary research continues to grapple with the question of teleology. More specifically, the paper claims that contemporary writing fails to distinguish adequately between extrinsic and intrinsic teleology. The paper concludes advocating for a serious reckoning with the problem of teleology, and claims it is essential for genuinely scientific psychology.

  • Science Teachers’ Conceptions About the Importance of Teaching and How
           to Teach Western Science to Students from Traditional Communities

      Abstract: We discuss the results of a qualitative research with science teachers that serve students from traditional communities. The aim is to analyze their conceptions on the importance of teaching and how to teach Western science to students from these communities. Data collection is carried out through semi-structured interviews with four teachers who work in a public school in the state of Bahia, Brazil. The analysis starts from the construction of narratives, generating thematic categories and epistemic positioning of teachers’ conceptions. The results indicate that, for those teachers, teaching Western science to students from traditional communities is important for the expansion of their knowledge and their active participation in different sociocultural environments, through methods that include intercultural dialogue. However, their answers have contradictions, which allow us to infer that their conceptions transit into the four epistemic positions on science teaching and cultural diversity: Epistemological Pluralism, Interculturalism, Multiculturalism, and Universalism, with the first two being the most emphasized. This reveals a dilemma between what they conceive as goals and links for science education, and what they practice as teachers, which is possibly influenced by school pedagogy provided by public policies of national education. We consider implications of these conceptions and positions for teacher education and science teaching sensitive to cultural diversity.

  • Culture and Leadership: a Lewinian Perspective of Organizational Problem

      Abstract: Leadership is inherently social. Being grounded in the Lewinian framework of field theory, I am instancing the diverse understanding of social leadership: Uncertainty reduction, making choices, assuming responsibility, and contributing to an orchestral interplay between followers are important functions of social leadership. But this is not sufficient. Organizations are built by concrete agents with concrete needs and overreaching goals. These needs and goals structure the environment (personal culture) of various employees including the leader. Drawing on an empirical case from a bakery as well as on Lewinian cases from the past, I am showing how group atmosphere alone is not able to cover the full range of the follower’s reactions: Here, we need to rely on basic concepts of culture: Employees live and work in their related life spaces. Complexity arises in organizations if the goal pursuit between followers themselves is contradictory, thus if their life spaces are a barrier for each other. The leader needs to realize here that this is not a disadvantage; his role is neither to solve these contradictions nor to present a potential solution. The leader needs to emphasize the interdependence of his followers; s/he can do so by letting them experience the issues and difficulties of the social other encountered in their respective life spaces. Here, followers are getting a glimpse into the life space (personal culture) of a colleague. Such border experiences play a key role for the following democratic exchange of how two previously contradictory life spaces are turned into conciliatory ones.
