  • Culturo-Behavioral Contributions to a Sustainable Market: The Interplay of
           Producers’ and Consumers’ Practices

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Abstract Sustainability is a relevant and pressing theme in which concepts and tools of cultural systems analysis should be applied to a greater extent. The misalignment of the incentive system for producers and consumers raises the issue of sustainable production and consumption of goods and services. A change of paradigm may be needed for shifting defective practices into better informed choices that are consistent with environmental targets and avoid the overexploitation of our planet’s resources. Previous efforts include the 2010 special issue of The Behavior Analyst and the Matrix Project, which advocated a greater involvement of behavior analysts and scientists in sustainability issues. In this conceptual analysis, we continue this effort by analyzing and discussing some of the contingencies underlying: i. manufacturers’ drive for offering environmentally friendly goods; ii. consumers’ bounded choices; and iii. their interaction in the market for achieving sustainable goals. We provide examples of virtuous and defective practices and relate to the Green Shift in Norway. The potential impact of this work consists of informing and influencing policymakers and advocacy organizations as agents of change. Their work is key to shape producers’ and consumers’ preferences for implementing sustainable practices and achieving common environmental goals.

  • Improved Soft-Skill Competencies of ABA Professionals Following Training
           and Coaching: A Feasibility Study

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Abstract The field of applied behavior analysis currently faces critique regarding the need for increased compassion and interprofessional collaboration training toward culturally and emotionally responsive practice. Mindful self-compassion is evidenced to improve self-compassion and compassion. The purpose of the current study was to improve soft-skill competencies in collaboration and compassion of behavior analytic professionals. In this feasibility study, two cohorts of American behavior analytic professionals (N = 24) received a 4-month training-and-coaching sequence, with a pre-program focus group serving as the program’s needs assessment. The Interprofessional Collaborative Competency Attainment Survey and Self-Compassion Scale, Short Form were administered pre- and post-intervention to ascertain program effectiveness, alongside open-ended survey questions. Training included experiential learning opportunities in small groups, with participants practicing self-compassion and collaboration skills. Coaching included additional individual practice opportunities. Pre- and post-whole test scores were significantly different on both instruments, with p set at .05, demonstrating preliminary effectiveness. Significance on paired-sample t-test for the Interprofessional Collaborative Competency Attainment Survey whole score fell at <.001, while for the Self-Compassion Scale, Short Form, it fell at .004. While prior studies have demonstrated the need for collaboration and compassion training within the ABA workforce, the current study reports on an implementation procedure to improve upon these skill sets, addressing a noted gap. Furthermore, the current study operationalizes collaboration alongside self-compassion, demonstrating the importance of centering collaborative practice within soft-skill awareness and competency. Future research can incorporate direct measures of these skill sets.

  • On the Science of Reading: How Social Justice, Behavior Analysis, and
           Literacy Instruction Converge

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Abstract The main responsibility of our educational institutions is to develop competent readers and, thus, a literate citizenry. Indeed, literacy is requisite to access valued opportunities our society offers, which leads to a worthwhile quality of life. Unfortunately, our educational institutions persist in a stalemate on how best to effect reading competence in our children. This impasse has left generations of children and adults behind. The literacy deficits resultant from pedagogical difference, often termed, “reading wars,” are magnified and exacerbated by other confounding factors such as increasing levels of poverty, social and economic inequalities, the COVID-19 pandemic, and more. Recently published reading data of fourth graders in the United States exhibit some of the most disparate performances to date, especially when contextualized by race or ethnicity. Increasingly, educational and political leaders are calling for the return to systematic and explicit phonics instruction, which has been empirically shown to improve reading ability. When taken together, it is clear that providing demonstrably effective reading instruction for children and youth with social and economic vulnerabilities is more than a political debate; it is an issue of social justice. The authors of this paper illustrate how the foundations of behavioral principles can inform reading instructional practices that will bolster our fledgling literacy rates and ultimately frame what it means to provide socially just literacy education for all.

  • How a Daily Regimen of Operant Conditioning Might Explain the Power of the
           Search Engine Manipulation Effect (SEME)

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Abstract Recent studies have shown that biased search results can produce substantial shifts in the opinions and voting preferences of undecided voters – a phenomenon called the “search engine manipulation effect” (SEME), one of the most powerful list effects ever discovered. We believe this is so because, unlike other list effects, SEME is supported by a daily regimen of operant conditioning. When people conduct searches for simple facts (86% of searches), the correct answer invariably turns up in the top position, which teaches users to attend to and click on high-ranking search results. As a result, when people are undecided, they tend to formulate opinions based on web pages linked to top search results. We tested this hypothesis in a controlled experiment with 551 US voters. Participants in our High-Trust group conducted routine searches in which the correct answer always appeared in the first search result. In our Low-Trust group, the correct answer could appear in any search position other than the first two. In all, participants had to answer five questions during this pre-training, and we focused our analysis on people who answered all the questions correctly (n = 355) – in other words, on people who were maximally impacted by the pre-training contingencies. A difference consistent with our hypothesis emerged between the groups when they were subsequently asked to search for information on political candidates. Voting preferences in the High-Trust group shifted toward the favored candidate at a higher rate (34.6%) than voting preferences in the Low-Trust group (17.1%, p = 0.001).

  • Community-Based Early Language and Literacy Screenings

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Abstract Reading screenings are an essential element of a preventative model of education. Early language and literacy screenings can identify students at risk of later reading difficulties. This pilot study investigated the feasibility and impact of a community-based organization providing free language and literacy screenings using an application based screening with largely automated scoring. The community organization paired screening results with parent education on language and literacy acquisition and evidence-based instructional practices tailored to the students’ identified risks. The mixed methods utilized survey data from parents/caregivers (n = 19) and volunteer screeners (n = 8) and interviews of community partners (n = 2), volunteers (n = 2), and parents (n = 2). Results of the pilot met the feasibility and impact goals. Community partners felt it was important to provide access to screening, and volunteers found the screening application easy to administer. Volunteer screeners reported the screening application was easy to administer, and children were engaged throughout the screening. Parents reported that the screening results and parent education significantly impacted their decision-making for their child(ren).

  • Effects of a Composite-to-Component Vocal Phoneme Segmentation
Intervention on Remediating Kindergarteners’ Difficulties in Learning to
           Read

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Early readers who have learned letter–sound correspondences do not always learn to read words through best practice reading instruction. This suggests a missing stimulus control for textual responses and the literature lacks an intervention to address this problem. Five kindergarten students who did not learn textual responses from reading instruction participated in this study. We used a combined pre- and posttest and multiple probe design to test the effects of a composite-to-component vocal phoneme segmentation (CtCVPS) intervention on the number of correct untaught (a) textual responses, (b) dictated written spelling responses, (c) vocal phoneme blends, (d) abstracted vocal phoneme segmentations, as well as (e) cumulative correct textual responses during reading instruction before and after the intervention. During the CtCVPS intervention participants were taught to listen to a set of composite words and vocalize the component phonemes. Correct responses emerged across all variables for all participants as a function of the intervention and all participants learned new textual responses from reading instruction after the CtCVPS intervention. These findings demonstrated that acquiring a generalized vocal phoneme segmentation repertoire through the CtCVPS intervention established necessary stimulus control for textual responding. Implications on the role of acquiring composite-to-component responses through the vocal phoneme segmentation intervention in learning to read and write are discussed.

  • Teaching, Learning, and Climate Change: Anticipated Impacts and Mitigation
           Strategies for Educators

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Abstract The impacts of climate change present numerous risks to the present and future state of teaching and learning. Natural disasters such as hurricanes, heat waves, flooding, blizzards, wildfires, sea level rise, and droughts threaten our ability to produce the learning outcomes promised to our pupils. Taking action to adapt to imminent climate-related challenges and mitigating measures that provoke and prolong ecological challenges is critical to the survival of these cultural institutions. Paradoxically, centers of teaching and learning can be seen as both victims of climate change as well as an instrumental part of the solution. Providing an efficient and effective education to the world’s youth is a catalyst for the innovations that future generations of skilled professionals will use to combat climate change. Educational settings are also crucial venues for raising social awareness about anthropogenic climate change to undermine the complacency and denialism that have stagnated the global response to this crisis thus far. This paper incorporates suggestions from climate scientists and learning scientists about how to change how we teach, where we teach, and what we teach to ensure teaching enterprises survive and thrive in the face of a changing climate.

  • Constructing Global Climate Justice: The Challenging Role of Behavior
           Science

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Abstract At least 80% of the world’s population has been significantly impacted by climate change; the most vulnerable around the world are already facing dramatic, severe costs due to emissions produced by wealthy nations. In fact, “climate change is not just an environmental issue—it is an economic issue, a social issue, a security issue, and, above all, a moral issue” (Freer-Smith et al., 2007, p. xiii; see also Shue, 2020, “Distant Strangers and the Illusion of Separation”). Despite decades of work, none of the current models for mitigating climate change offers a realistic route toward stable end-state solutions, even in the wealthiest nations, much less the world (Brooks, 2020; Bordoff & O’Sullivan (2022). Efforts to affect climate change have typically been viewed as the province of engineers and policy makers, but achieving timely and adequate cultural shifts as required to support global climate justice (GCJ), is a question of behavior, and thereby calls out to our science. Taking a constructional approach, behavior science is in a position to offer and construct conceptual and experimental tools for understanding, studying, and contributing to cultural systems that have the potential to lead to meaningful climate change responses. Drawing on what is known about (a) contingencies of reinforcement; (b) delay and probability discounting, and related levels of demand; (c) firmly embedded, widely established patterns of derived relational responding, (d) emerging conceptual models of strategic cultural-systems analysis, and (e) what is now known about the power of narrative, behavior science offers intriguing systemic possibilities for engaging in strategic, science-based social action supporting GCJ. Included in the possibilities explored here are community and societal interventions, policy advocacy, and other forms of activism, framed in behavior science terms. The paper ends with an example of how our discipline can contribute to climate change mitigation through narrative and activism supporting forests and other natural ecosystems.

  • Modeling Complex Verbal Relations within Racial Stereotyping: A
           Translational Analysis of Relational Density

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Abstract The present study was a translational analysis of relational density theory (RDT; Belisle & Dixon, 2020) in evaluating relational frames that may orient and evoke prejudiced behavior against Black communities. RDT proposes that relations differ in the degree of their relatedness, thus allowing for the analysis of large relational networks. We obtained stimuli from four existing studies comparing implicit relational behavior occasioned by racially white and black images and words to construct a 30-member relational network. Participants then ranked the degree of relatedness for each stimulus pair on a 10-point scale. By analyzing the relative relatedness of each stimulus pair, we constructed a two-dimensional geometric representation of the relational behavior of this group of participants using a multidimensional scaling procedure. Results revealed distinct classes along a first dimension based on race (i.e., white images clustered together, and black images clustered together) and along a second dimension based on approach and avoidance functions. Moreover, latent patterns were apparent within this representation of the relational behavior of our sample with important implications for understanding racial stereotyping of Black bodies and harm experienced by Black communities.

  • Advancing Research and Practice in Culturo-Behavior Science: A Call to
           Action

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Abstract Many current and aspiring behavior scientists have expressed uncertainty and interest regarding how to get more involved in Culturo-Behavior Science (CBS). The focus of this editorial is to provide readers of Behavior and Social Issues (BSI) with some tangible ways to get engaged in CBS research and practice. The recommendations focus on how to shift the behaviors and practices in which students, researchers, professors, and practitioners of behavior science typically engage, both individually and collectively, in ways that facilitate the creation of integrated and adaptive systems that can advance research and practice in CBS while acting systematically to strengthen our scientific, disciplinary, practice, and communities to promote social justice.

  • Survey of Faculty Perspectives, Actions, and Barriers to Culturally
           Responsive Mentorship

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Abstract Behavior analysts have recently increased efforts toward providing culturally responsive clinical practice. Although the emphasis on culturally responsive practices when providing behavior analytic services to clients is important, it is also relevant when training and mentoring future behavior analysts. Culturally responsive mentorship practices can have a great impact on the success and growth of students in behavior analysis, especially those from historically marginalized groups (HMGs). The current study summarizes a survey of 44 faculty providing mentorship in Verified Course Sequences (VCSs) and accredited behavior-analytic programs. The survey identified the faculty’s reported (a) skill level, importance, and confidence in culturally responsive mentorship, (b) training in culturally responsive mentorship, and (c) current and desired participation in various activities related to recruitment, retention, wellness, and persistence of students from historically marginalized groups (HMGs). Results of the survey and implications for using culturally responsive practices while mentoring future behavior analysts from HMGs are discussed.

  • A Behavioral Economic Analysis of Carbon-Neutral Home Energy Enrollment

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Abstract This study demonstrates behavioral economic task sensitivity in the context of “green” consumerism, specifically carbon-neutral home energy enrollment. Task respondents reported their likelihood of enrolling with a hypothetical home energy supplier via a medium (i.e., simulated task) closely resembling an actual choice context (i.e., energy provider web portal). We described enrollment probability across prices and generated demand metrics using field-standard nonlinear modeling. Model outputs were consistent with extant behavioral economic literature in internal consistency (i.e., correlations among derived demand metrics) and data quality (i.e., the proportion of nonsystematic flagging). We then used hierarchical linear regression to assess the degree to which demand metrics predict ecological concern. Results revealed a predictive relation between the demand sensitivity metric α (alpha) and sum scores on the New Ecological Paradigm Scale such that those respondents most willing to continue paying for green energy at increasing prices were also those expressing greatest concern over human–environment relations. This preliminary predictive validation underscores the task’s ability to contact relevant ecological decision-making contexts. Overall findings support task use as an evaluative instrument in prospective community intervention (as in evaluating contextual influences) and underscore the viable application of behavioral economic methods to better understand “green” consumer preferences.

  • Developing the Service Inventory: A System to Gauge the Effect of Advocacy
           on Service Access

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Abstract Individuals (families, self-advocates, and practitioners) often advocate for autistic individuals to access services. However, there are few systems that accurately measure service access. To discern whether advocacy impacts service access, it is critical to have a measure of services. In this article, we share the development of the Service Inventory—a measure which includes operational definitions and probes of types of services relevant to autistic individuals across the lifespan. We share examples of the Service Inventory so it can be used by students, families, and behavior analysts as they advocate with autistic individuals to access services.

  • Framing Effects on Hypothetical Use of Public Transportation: A Time Cost
           Demand Analysis

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Abstract Climate change is a threat to current and future generations. One behavior change that may produce substantial emission reductions is a shift from using personal vehicles to public transportation. While the use of public transportation allows reductions in personal emissions, it is associated with extra time spent en route. Behavioral economic studies of demand have demonstrated the effects of delay on choice, but few have addressed the effects of delay on use of transportation modalities. Additionally, studies targeting environmentally relevant commodities have occasionally examined choice when outcomes are framed as being environmentally beneficial, but this is likely not representative of naturalistic choice opportunities where framing is absent. The purpose of the current study was to demonstrate the effects of time as a cost on the hypothetical use of public transportation, and to evaluate the effects of a framing manipulation on participants’ responses. We found that participants’ reported use of public transportation was sensitive to time as a cost, that environmental framing increased reported use relative to previous neutral framing, but that the sequence of framing conditions moderated changes in responses.

  • Gender Bias toward Supervisors’ Empowering Leadership Behavior

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Abstract Gender bias continues to impact women’s roles in the workplace with significantly fewer women in high-level leadership roles than men. In recent years, many workplaces have shifted from a traditional top-down management model to empowering leadership models focused on increasing the autonomy of employees. This study sought to identify if employees demonstrate gender bias related to empowering leadership behaviors. Forty-one individuals completed a survey that asked questions regarding their work history then identified supervisor images they associated with either positive, negative, or neutral examples of empowering leadership behavior, and finally completed a preference assessment for which supervisor they would prefer to work for or not to work for. Most participants selected the female supervisor image as representative of empowering leadership behavior. Additionally, despite employment histories with preference toward male supervisors, participants indicated a preference to work for female supervisors. Results of this study are discussed in relation to gender bias in the workplace and implications for employers and hiring managers.

  • Exploratory Analysis of the Contextual Influence of Motherhood on
           Probability Discounting in Women

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Abstract When it comes to financial decision-making, women may be more risk averse than men, and mothers are more risk-averse than non-mothers on average (Charness & Gneezy, Journal of Economic Behavior & Organization, 83, 50–58, 2012; Ross, 2021). This pattern of responding is attributed as one reason for gender-based pay differences that negatively impact women in the workforce and risks placing blame on women when not considering the broader social context operating around womanhood and motherhood. The present study is an exploratory experimental analysis of the influence of motherhood as a context variable affecting probability discounting rates of women across two experiments. In the first experiment, a college student sample of non-mothers completed a standard probability discounting task and an additive discounting task where they imagined having a hypothetical child while completing the task. Results showed steeper probability discounting in the hypothetical motherhood condition (t(28) = –2.30, p < 0.05). In the second experiment, a sample of mothers recruited using Amazon’s Mechanical Turk completed the standard probability discounting task and a subtractive discounting task where they imagined that they had chosen not to have children and completed the task. Results showed lower probability discounting rates in the hypothetical non-motherhood condition (t(50) = –5.29, p < 0.01). Taken together, these results suggest that motherhood may be a broad context variable that influences discounting rates and further research is needed to pinpoint specific components within the social experiences of mothers that contribute to financial disadvantages for women within oppressive social systems.

  • Experimental Analysis of Macrocontingencies and Metacontingencies Between
           Group Competition

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Abstract Metacontingencies describe a functional relationship between interlocking behavioral contingencies that produce an aggregate product and a selecting environment. Various metacontingency procedures employ operant contingencies and metacontingencies concurrently to investigate participant’s choices to engage in a behavior as a function of either the magnitude or frequency of consequences. However, little research attention has been given to evaluate macrocontingencies to metacontingencies in the context of between-group competition. The present study compared the results of three experimental groups. In experimental group 1, participants responded to the task together and were allowed to use vocal communication. In experimental group 2, participants responded to the task individually. In experimental group 3, participants responded to the task together but were not allowed to use vocal communication. The results showed that some participants in group 2 reached a high percentage of correct responses, but the sum of their performance (macrocontingency) was not significantly better than chance. The performance of participants who cooperated (groups 1 and 3) was significantly better than chance. We discuss the role of between-group selection, within-group variability and social contingencies in the adaptive value of cooperation.

  • Mass Hysteria and Xenophobia: They’re Not in your Mind, or So Say
           Two New Books

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Abstract Two recent books – The Sleeping Beauties and other stories of mystery illness by Suzanne O’Sullivan (2021, Pantheon Books) and Of fear and strangers – a history of xenophobia by George Makari (2021, Norton) – offer interesting and provocative consideration of social problems that will be of interest to behavior scientists, especially those with interests in cultural practices. This review examines each book and explores shared themes, perspectives, and implications of analyses of these social disorders. Both provide detailed and fascinating accounts of behavior science explanations of pervasive social issues and raise questions for research and implications for practice. Both books are recommended for graduate courses and may enrich scholarly work in programs offering concentration in culturo-behavior science.
