  • Health Condition Co-Morbidities in Children with Autism and Their
           Association with Challenging Behavior

      Abstract: Objectives In this cohort study, we assessed the occurrence of health conditions in children with autism, assessed whether clusters of health conditions were present, and whether somatic conditions were associated with challenging behaviors. Method Medical histories and adaptive/maladaptive behavior reports of 246 children with autism were extracted from an electronic database and subjected to cluster analyses. Two-thirds of the participants had one or more serious health conditions and one-third had two or more health co-morbidities. Results Analyses revealed three significant clusters of health conditions: (a) allergies/sinus infections and respiratory illness/not asthma; (b) gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), constipation, and epilepsy/seizures; and (c) headache/migraine and sleep dysregulation. Group comparisons and effect sizes of individual health conditions showed associations among (i) GERD and aggression and self-injury and (ii) sleep dysregulation and aggression and self-injury. Conclusions Our findings suggest that children with autism may have higher rates of common health conditions than found in the general pediatric population, that health conditions may cluster among individuals, and that some health conditions (GERD and disordered sleep) were associated with increased levels of self-injury and aggression. These data call for more attention to the mechanisms contributing to health conditions, and their cooccurrence with challenging behaviors, in children with autism.

  • Caregiver-Implemented Behavior Analytic Treatment Package for Skin Picking
           in PWS: A Pilot Study

      Abstract: Objectives Prader-Willi syndrome (PWS) is a neurogenetic condition characterized by a variety of physical and behavioral symptoms that impact health and quality of life. Skin picking, a form of self-injurious behavior, is highly prevalent in the PWS population and can result in serious and long-lasting health concerns. Despite this, few effective interventions for skin picking exist. Methods This study aims to fill the gaps in the literature by evaluating a caregiver-implemented behavior analytic intervention for skin picking delivered using remote, video technology. Thirteen caregiver child dyads participated in the virtual behavior analytic caregiver training program. The training lasted between 8 and 12 weeks. Caregivers met one-on-one with a Board-Certified Behavior Analyst who took them through a structured program where they learned a series of strategies to prevent and reduce skin picking. Results Results of the study indicate significant improvements in picking for eight participants across caregiver rating scales, wound photographs, and quantitative analyses. Questionable effects were found for three participants, and no impact was seen for the final participant. Conclusions While replication is needed, this study demonstrates a promising step towards developing a diagnosis-specific intervention for a highly prevalent behavior with widespread impacts on social functioning and health.

  • Housing, Homelessness and Disability: the Commodification of a Core Human
           Right and Breach of This Right for People with Disability

      Abstract: Objectives Access to housing is a recognised human right across international conventions. Yet this right is rarely legislated for within individual countries. In parallel, housing has increasingly become a much sought-after commodity, one in which the accumulation of multiple properties or “homes” is a way of future-proofing for retirement. Large inequities exist across society in terms of who has a home, those who have multiple homes and those who are at risk of homelessness or are homeless. People with disability are particularly more likely to be (over-)represented in the latter group. Methods An environmental scan of contemporary policy, practise and developments on homelessness and disability in Australia sought to examine the current government response to structural and systematic issues which lead to homelessness and neglect for people with disability. A comparison between international practise and policy is made, with a particular focus on examples of effective rights-based interventions, where they exist. Results Ninety-six documents of varying types were included in the environmental scan. Conclusions People with disability are frequently excluded from current disability and homelessness policy. Policies can and should be amended to instigate structural change which incorporates them. Embedding the human right to housing within national legislation is one way to enforce structural change.

  • Using the Listening2Faces App with Three Young Adults with Autism: A
           Feasibility Study

      Abstract: Objectives Listening2Faces (L2F) is a therapeutic, application-based training program designed to improve audiovisual speech perception for persons with communication disorders. The purpose of this research was to investigate the feasibility of using the L2F application with young adults with autism and complex communication needs. Methods Three young adults with autism and complex communication needs completed baseline assessments and participated in training sessions within the L2F application. Behavioral supports, including the use of cognitive picture rehearsal, were used to support engagement with the L2F application. Descriptive statistics were used to provide (1) an overview of the level of participation in L2F application with the use of behavioral supports and (2) general performance on L2F application for each participant. Results All three participants completed the initial auditory noise assessment (ANA) as well as 8 or more levels of the L2F application with varying accuracy levels. One participant completed the entire L2F program successfully. Several behavioral supports were used to facilitate participation; however, each individual demonstrated varied levels of engagement with the application. Conclusions The L2F application may be a viable intervention tool to support audiovisual speech perception in persons with complex communication needs within a school-based setting. A review of behavioral supports and possible beneficial modifications to the L2F application for persons with complex communication needs are discussed.

  • Rights of Persons with Disabilities: Current Status and Future Directions

      Abstract: Objectives The Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD) articulates the rights of all individuals with disabilities, including those with intellectual disabilities. This article introduces a special issue addressing the current status and future direction of how these rights are being realized for people with intellectual disabilities across various countries. Methods Experts were invited to submit conceptual papers, literature reviews, and empirical studies covering a wide range of topics relevant to the implementation of CRPD. The aim was to document how human rights and disability services are provided in different societies. Results Peer-reviewed articles accepted for this special issue included (1) conceptual and philosophical papers discussing the fundamental principles of the CRPD and actions to fully actualize them in the day-to-day lives of people with intellectual disabilities; (2) empirical studies highlighting programs aligned with the mandates of the CRPD; (3) examination of CRPD components integrated into positive behavior support plans and educational programs; (4) evaluation of progress in providing housing for homeless people with intellectual disabilities; (5) a program enhancing the ability of people with intellectual disabilities and their primary caregivers to actively participate in determining the need for the use of psychotropic medication for behavioral issues; (6) ethical guidelines for prescribing psychotropic medication for people with intellectual disabilities; (7) evaluation of current legislation, policy, and practices aimed at enhancing CRPD implementation; (8) example of methods enabling people with intellectual disabilities to be active participants in developing, researching, and co-writing research findings using an Easy Read format; (9) examination of organization-wide processes for reducing behaviors of concern and the use of restrictive procedures, including chemical and physical restraints; and (10) issues related to the ethical, legal, and social implications of genomic technologies for people with intellectual disabilities. Conclusions While progress is evident in implementing the CRPD mandates, much work remains to be done to enable people with intellectual disabilities to fully enjoy the rights and freedoms available to all citizens.

  • Care4Parents: An Evaluation of an Online Mindful Parenting Program for
           Caregivers of Children with 22q11.2 Deletion Syndrome

      Abstract: Objectives Parenting a child with special healthcare needs is associated with significant caregiver stress. Previous research has found that parenting stress and mental health impact outcomes for children with chronic illnesses. Despite this, the importance of managing parents’ stress is often overlooked in the management of chronic health conditions, such as 22q11.2 deletion syndrome (22q11DS). The objective of this study was to investigate the acceptability of the mindful parenting program, Care4Parents. Methods This study was designed as a non-randomised pilot study evaluating the acceptability of an online mindful parenting program Care4Parents, specifically designed for those parenting a child with special health care needs, including medical complexity. There were 20 participants recruited to take part, which involved attending eight online weekly group sessions for 2 h, with a follow-up after 2 months and practice exercises between sessions. Interviews were conducted with 12 participants after the completion of the program. Using attendance data and thematic analysis of semi-structured interviews, the study aimed to determine if the online program Care4Parents would be experienced by participants as acceptable. Results Results indicate preliminary evidence of acceptability, with adequate retention and themes emerging from interviews highlighting the appropriateness of content, delivery, and perceived benefits, including personal growth, peer support, and enhanced coping. ‘Barriers to engagement’ was also a theme, and adjustments were discussed based on participant feedback to further enhance the program. Conclusions The analysis of the data indicates that the program was deemed acceptable to participants, therefore warranting further research using quantitative measures to confirm findings and investigate effectiveness.

  • A Review of Literature on Interventions Aimed at Increasing Play for
           Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder

      Abstract: Objectives This review aimed to investigate interventions designed to enhance play for children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD), emphasizing the utilization of typically developing peers and adults within the intervention. The primary focus is on understanding the impact of such interventions on improving social communication skills, play engagement, and community integration for children with ASD. Methods This review examined 20 studies containing interventions to enhance play for children with ASD using typically developing peers and adults as part of the intervention. The studies included single-case designs (SCDs) and group design studies published from 2000 to 2022. Results The findings reveal that successful play interventions for children with ASD often involve a combination of practices. Notably, certain components, including following the child’s interest, prompting, video modeling, and live modeling frequently featured across the studies. Also, other components, such as priming and social stories, were less commonly employed. The synthesis of these results sheds light on effective strategies for teaching play to children with ASD and informs the development of comprehensive intervention approaches. Conclusions This review concludes that interventions incorporating a combination of strategies prove most effective in enhancing play for children with ASD. The identified components, such as following the child’s interest and various modeling techniques offer valuable insights for designing targeted interventions.   • Outcomes in PEERS® for Adolescents Across Neurodevelopmental Disorders:
           ADHD, Autism, and Their Co-occurrence

      Abstract: Objectives Autistic individuals and those diagnosed with ADHD are at greater risk for social difficulties, with evidence suggesting that the co-occurrence of these neurodevelopmental disorders may further exacerbate social challenges. Though social skill interventions have strong empirical support in autistic populations, fewer evidence-based social skill interventions for adolescents with ADHD exist. Further, the impact of co-occurring autism and ADHD diagnoses on social skill treatment response is unknown. This study aimed to investigate the comparative efficacy of the evidence-based PEERS® for Adolescents social skills intervention in adolescents with ADHD, autistic adolescents, and adolescents with co-occurring ADHD and autism. Methods Adolescents (N = 144; ADHD, n = 43; Autism, n = 60; ADHD + Autism, n = 41) and their parents participated in PEERS® for Adolescents and completed questionnaires on social functioning at pre- and post-intervention. PEERS® for Adolescents is a 16-week, parent-assisted social skills intervention that teaches ecologically valid skills related to making and keeping friends as well as handling conflict and rejection in peer relationships. Results At baseline, a MANCOVA revealed significant differences in social behavior by diagnostic group (ADHD, Autism, ADHD + Autism), F(10,218) = 3.60, p < .001. However, in a repeated measures MANCOVA, no significant differences in treatment response following PEERS® for Adolescents across diagnostic groups emerged, F(10,214) = 1.34, p = .209. As a whole, participants significantly improved across all assessed outcomes. Conclusion Results suggest that adolescents with ADHD, with or without a co-occurring autism diagnosis, benefit from the novel extension of PEERS® for Adolescents, showing improved social skill proficiency and decreased problem behaviors.

  • Development and Initial Outcomes of a Mentoring Program Designed to
           Support Autistic Adolescents and Adults

      Abstract: Objectives Autistic individuals frequently experience mental health concerns, and there are few strengths-based programs available within community settings. This study examined the initial outcomes of the Autism Mentorship Program (AMP), a mentoring program for autistic youth and adults. Methods Fourteen autistic youth and 14 autistic adults were paired in one-to-one mentoring relationships, and they met weekly for mentoring sessions. Seventeen parents of autistic youth also participated in this study. A mixed methods design was used to assess social and emotional outcomes and acceptability of AMP. Data were collected via online surveys and standardized rating scales before AMP, following eight weeks of programming, and following AMP. Data were analyzed using descriptive methods and Hedge’s g. Results Results indicated strong uptake and satisfaction with the program and mentoring relationships. Mentee outcomes included increased pride in their autistic identities (g = .28) and improvements in self-awareness, social connectedness, and communication skills. Parents of mentees reported increases in quality of life (g = .49), life satisfaction (g = .60), and pride in autistic identity (g = .80) for their child. Mentors reported improvements in quality of life (g = .58), internalizing (g =  − .12) and externalizing symptoms (g = -.06), leadership, communication skills, social connectedness, and social skills (g = .19). Conclusions Initial results indicate that AMP has the potential to benefit autistic mentors and mentees. Additional research is needed regarding mentoring for autistic individuals.

  • Psychological Interventions for Individuals with 22q11.2 Deletion
           Syndrome: a Systematic Review

      Abstract: Objectives 22q11.2 deletion syndrome (22q11.2DS) is common microdeletion syndrome associated with intellectual and learning disorders, psychiatric disorders, and a complex physical phenotype. The aim of this review was to build upon a previous systematic review on this topic and identify psychological interventions attempting to address the behavioural (including cognitive and emotional) phenotype of the syndrome. Methods Articles were reviewed and organised as per the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses guidelines for conducting systematic reviews. The literature search identified 1124 studies, out of which nine studies met the inclusion criteria. The nine studies are summarised in terms of (a) study design and follow-up, (b) populations involved, (c) intervention characteristics, and (d) feasibility. Results The findings indicate that it is important to consider the individual’s needs, developmental stage, and the syndrome-specific behavioural phenotype when implementing (and evaluating) psychological interventions. Conclusions The existing literature has a heavy focus on the delineation of the behavioural phenotype and associated psychiatric comorbidities but there are very few studies exploring how to adapt and implement effective interventions to support the mental health and well-being of people with 22q11.2DS. Future studies are required to evaluate the feasibility of interventions as well as the effectiveness in reducing distress, building skills, and improving quality of life.

  • Minority Representation in Special Education: 5-Year Trends from
           2016–2020

      Abstract: Objectives The persistent disproportionate representation of minority students in special education, either over- or underrepresented, spans decades. This study aims to explore minority representation in special education between 2016 and 2020. Methods Growth models were utilized to analyze 5-year data from the Data Accountability Center, U.S. Census Bureau, and the Census Bureau’s Small Area Income and Poverty Estimates program. Results Alaskan Native and American Indian students were overrepresented in special education for both school-age and early childhood groups. Higher risk ratios were observed in developmental delays for Alaskan Native and American Indian students, in emotional disturbances and intellectual disabilities for African Americans, and autism for Asian students. Additionally, state poverty significantly affected Hispanic and Latino representation in 2016, revealing a persistent pattern over time. Conclusions The persistence of overrepresentation among certain minority groups in special education necessitates the implementation of proactive evidence-based instructional and behavioral interventions (e.g., Multi-tiered Systems of Support; personnel training) to address chronic and poor school outcomes for minorities and in turn reduce referrals and eligibility in special education.

  • An Exploratory Study of the CRPD Distribution on Human Rights Education
           Content for Students in South Korea

      Abstract: Objectives This study aimed to analyze intervention studies and educational materials on human rights education for students with disabilities in South Korea within the perspective of the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD). Methods A systematic review of the literature was conducted from 2007 to 2022. School-based intervention studies on human rights education of students with disabilities and educational materials on this topic for both students with and without disabilities developed by the national and provincial offices of education were analyzed. Results Lessons of the intervention studies and the educational materials for students on the rights of persons with disabilities reflecting specific article(s) of the CRPD were derived from this systematic review. Based on the findings of relations with CRPD, strengths and weaknesses in human rights education for persons with disabilities in schools were identified. Conclusions Future directions for the development of educational programs and materials for advocating the rights of students with disabilities and for improving disability awareness were discussed in the context of inclusive education.

  • Emergency Room Psychiatric Consultations: Socio-demographic and Clinical
           Differences Between Children with and Without Autism Spectrum Disorders

      Abstract: Objectives Recent years have witnessed an increase in pediatric emergency room (ER) visits for crisis mental health care in Canada and the USA, with a high proportion driven by youth with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). This study aims to characterize the socio-demographic and clinical profiles of autistic children presenting to an ER for crisis assessment and compare them to those of neurotypical children also presenting to the ER in crisis. Methods Twenty-five children with ASD and 286 without the disorder were compared in terms of age, sex, parent marital and socio-economic status, psychosocial functioning, suicidal behavior, psychiatric diagnosis, and reasons for ER consultation. Results Youth with ASD showed a higher frequency of male sex (X2 (1, N = 303) = 11.97, p < .001), younger age (t(303) = − 3.08, p = .002), increased suicidal behavior (X2 (4, N = 261) = 14.99 p ≤ .005), less co-existing diagnosis of substance use disorder (X2 (1, N = 303) = 3.91 p = .048), and greater prevalence of behavioral disorders as the reason for ER consultation (X2 (1, N = 301) = 41.25 p < .00). Conclusions An understanding of the socio-demographic and clinical profiles of the autistic population will help clinicians identify the needs of this group seeking crisis intervention, improve management, orient service delivery, increase prevention, and inform governmental organizations of the need to provide service accessibility.

  • Feasibility of the Eat and Exercise to Win Program for Adults with
           Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities

      Abstract: Objectives Difficulties with healthy eating and lack of exercise are ubiquitous in adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) and are risk factors to a healthy lifestyle. The objective of this study is to assess the feasibility of the Eat and Exercise to Win Program in a community sample of adults with IDD. Methods Participants were 17 adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities and five direct care staff. Health coaches delivered weekly sessions to the adults for a year — staff observed sessions, receiving materials before sessions. Adults with IDD completed surveys and a group interview assessing perceptions of the program; weights were assessed. Staff completed interviews assessing adults’ engagement and understanding of the material, their perceptions of implementation of the program, and a program validity and impact scale. Results Implementation fidelity was high. Both adults with IDD and staff reported that drinking more water and understanding the importance of eating more fruits and vegetables were positive results of the program. Adults with IDD were exercising more, especially walking. Findings indicated that adults who attended over 75% of the sessions lost an average of about four pounds at the end of the program and those who attended less than 75% of the lessons gained about four pounds. Conclusions Adults with IDD indicated knowledge change, and staff provided high ratings of implementation fidelity. Future research with an active control group and further investigation of behavior change will advance knowledge about program impact.

  • The Moment an Autistic Child Adapts to a Task: Analysis of Multiple Time
           Scales as an Index of Movement Variability

      Abstract: Objectives This study observes the trajectory of the motor development of a child with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) from the perspective of multiple time scales and elucidates how the movement of the child changed through interaction with tasks and the environment. Methods To analyze the trajectory of motor development in more detail, the present study focused on the case of one child with ASD in a motor development clinic, specifically examining the variability of the ball-throwing motion throughout 11 months and analyzing the interaction between the trajectory of the motion variability and the task. Results Throughout the observation period, two different tasks were performed, and a total of 135 ball-throwing motions were observed. These motions repeatedly varied between large and small, indicating that the constraints of the tasks strongly impacted him. In the phase of rapid movement variation, his psychological situation when faced with the task influenced how he directed his attention during the performance, which affected the final expression of ball-throwing motions. This indicates that one’s psychological situation of adapting to changes in the task influences the fluctuation of large and small movements. Conclusions This trajectory of motor development was considered to be a process of “adaptive variation,” in which the subject searches for a strategy adapted to them in response to the task encountered, which is an important factor in motor development.

  • Relationship Between ADHD-Like Traits and Emotion Dysregulation in the
           Adult General Population

      Abstract: Objectives Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder classically characterised by inattention and/or hyperactivity/impulsivity. However, emotion-related problems are also common in people with ADHD, although there is disagreement about their relationship with the classical symptoms of ADHD. Here, we investigated the relationship between emotion dysregulation and ADHD-like traits in a non-clinical group of adults. Method In a group of 1074 individuals, average age 30.27 years, 656 females, 402 males and 16 who identified as ‘other’, with 76.8% describing themselves as ‘white’, were administered the Adult ADHD Self-Report Scale (ASRS) and the Difficulties in Emotion Regulation Scale (DERS) to measure ADHD-like traits and emotion dysregulation, respectively. Results The Inattention subscale of the ASRS was significantly correlated with all subscales of the DERS. Similarly, the Hyperactivity/impulsivity subscale was correlated with all subscales of the DERS except for the Lack of emotional awareness. The Lack of emotional clarity and Difficulties engaging in goal-directed behaviour subscales of the DERS were significant independent positive predictors of ASRS inattention scores. Non-acceptance of emotional responses, Difficulties engaging in goal-directed behaviour, Impulse control difficulties and Lack of emotional clarity subscales of the DERS were significant independent positive predictors of ASRS hyperactivity/impulsivity scores. In other words, as inattention and hyperactive/impulsive symptoms increased in severity, there was a concomitant increase in the severity of most aspects of emotion dysregulation. Conclusions The close association between emotion dysregulation and the classical symptoms of ADHD suggests that they may arise from a common dysfunctional substrate and hence treating emotion dysregulation may provide a novel pathway by which to treat the classical symptoms.

  • A Preliminary Evaluation of the Feasibility and Efficacy of Mantra-Like
           Phrase Recitation in Improving Mental Health in Autistic Adults

      Abstract: Objectives Mantra recitation has been shown to improve emotional well-being in neurotypical individuals with mental health conditions; however, no research has explored its effect on the autistic population. The private, routine nature of mantra and mantra-like recitation may offer unique advantages for autistic individuals struggling with negative emotions and emotion regulation. The purpose of this study was therefore to conduct a preliminary study of the feasibility and efficacy of a self-guided, online program of reciting secular mantra-like phrases in improving negative emotions and cognitive coping mechanisms. Methods This study used a pre-post, quasi-experimental design. Participants (n = 12) recited a mantra-like phrase for 30 min a day over 6 weeks. Each participant chose a secular mantra-like phrase from a predetermined list to practice exclusively throughout the session. Participants also completed two surveys each week to track their progress and practice times. Results Participants overall reported high feasibility, specifically acceptability and practicality of the program, and high satisfaction with study participation. At the conclusion of the program, participants reported significant decreases in negative emotions, specifically anxiety, stress, depression, and rumination, and significant increases in emotion regulation. Conclusions These findings offer promise regarding the feasibility and efficacy of secular mantra-like recitation for promoting emotional wellbeing in autistic adults, based on its improvement of symptoms and use of a low-cost strategy that can be performed across settings. Self-guided programs may offer additional benefits to autistic adults given that they can be completed independently and privately within the privacy of their homes.

  • Eye gaze During Semi-naturalistic Face-to-Face Interactions in Autism

      Abstract: Objectives Reduced eye contact is common in autistic people and has frequently been investigated using two-dimensional stimuli with eye-tracking technology. Only a few studies have investigated the use of gaze in autistic individuals during real-world interactions. The current study explored how autistic adults engage in eye contact during real-life interpersonal interactions. Methods Twenty participants (autistic n = 10, neurotypical n = 10) were recruited to participate in a semi-naturalistic, face-to-face, in-person conversation while wearing unobtrusive, lightweight, eye-tracking glasses. Participants also completed measures of emotion recognition, empathy and alexithymia. Results The results of this study were consistent with the autobiographical accounts of autistic adults, who report reduced eye contact in social situations. The autistic group had a lower overall gaze duration and made fewer fixations towards the eyes and face than the control group. Both autistic and control groups adjusted their mean gaze duration on the eyes and face, depending on whether they were speaking or listening during the interaction. Conclusions Importantly, some measures of eye fixation are significant predictors of both autistic symptoms and emotion recognition ability. The study highlights the subtlety of eye gaze differences in autistic people and the importance of accounting for the conversational phase in this area of research. It also highlights the potential relationship between eye gaze and emotion recognition ability
