  • Possession of Smartphones while Studying: Effects on the Recall of
Information in a Sample of Psychology Students

    • Authors: Lela Zarevičiūtė Gabija Jarašiūnaitė - Fedosejeva
Abstract: The impact of smartphones on people’s daily lives is increasing. However, despite the benefits of smartphones, the adverse effects of these devices are becoming more prominent in the academic environment; therefore, it is important to analyse them. The aim of the research is to evaluate the effects that possessing of a smartphone while studying has on the recall of information in a sample of psychology students. The research analysed data collected from a sample of 80 second and third-year students from the bachelor’s program in psychology (69 females, 10 males, and 1 “other”). The age of the participants varied from 19 to 54 years (average age – 24 years, std. deviation – 7.93 years). Research method: experiment. The participants were divided into groups, according to the effects: 1) those who could not have their smartphones during the lecture; 2) those who could have their smartphones during the lecture but were asked not to use them; 3) those who could have their smartphones during the lecture and were not given any instruction on their usage. During each experiment session, 8–13 students from each group watched a 20-minute lecture recording. After the lecture, the participants completed a short test on the lecture’s content. After finishing the test, the participants filled in a nomophobia questionnaire (Yildirim & Correia, 2015). One week after participating in the experiment, students sent in a screenshot with the information on their average smartphone screen time. Students who had their smartphones during the lecture recalled the information worse than those who did not. However, no significant differences were found between the group of students who were given instructions on the usage of smartphones and those who were not. The results also revealed that a higher average time spent using a smartphone was associated with poorer recall of lecture information.

  • Trust in Countries’ Institutions and Subjective Well-being: Data
           from 21 Countries

    • Authors: Tadas Vadvilavičius
Abstract: In psychological research, greater attention is paid to the closest social systems of a person and their importance for that person’s well-being. However, it cannot be ruled out that the state-level social system and its assessment can also be significant predictors of a person’s subjective well-being. The purpose of this study is to determine the impact of an individual’s trust in parliament, political parties, the political and legal system, and the police on life satisfaction and subjective happiness. Data from the European Social Survey Round 10, which includes 21 countries (n = 34079), were used for the analysis. The results revealed that the people have the most trust in the police and the least trust in political parties. Additionally, the results show that men trust parliament and the legal system more than women and are more satisfied with life. Structural equation modeling revealed that trust in the state predicts higher life satisfaction and subjective well-being. The results revealed that the state, as the highest social system, is also significant for a person’s subjective well-being. The results also showed differences between countries. The obtained research findings open up possibilities for further research.

  • The Suicidal Ideation Attributes Scale (SIDAS) and the Suicide Behaviors
Questionnaire-Revised (SBQ-R): Psychometric Properties of the Lithuanian
           Versions

    • Authors: Jokūbas Gužas Paulius Skruibis Eglė Mažulytė-Rašytinė Dovilė Grigienė Said Dadašev Jurgita Rimkevičienė Danutė Gailienė
Abstract: The Suicidal Ideation Attributes Scale (SIDAS) and the Suicidal Behaviors Questionnaire-Revised (SBQ-R) are widely used psychological instruments for assessing people‘s suicidal ideation and suicidal behavior. The aim of this study was to examine the psychometric characteristics of the Lithuanian versions of the SIDAS and SBQ-R. We analysed data collected from four samples: a Lithuanian general population quota sample based on age, gender and place of residence (N = 697, 52.9% women, aged 18–79 years); a sample of students (N = 2013, 72 % women, aged 18–29 years); a clinical sample of suicidal patients (N = 35, 77.1% women, aged 18–59 years); and a test-retest sample of students who completed the instruments twice within a two-week period (N = 54, 70.4% women, aged 18–47 years). The participants answered questions on gender, and age and completed the SIDAS and SBQ-R. The data analysis revealed that the Lithuanian versions of the SIDAS and SBQ-R have good internal consistency, temporal stability, construct, convergent, and criterion validity. The Lithuanian versions of the SIDAS and SBQ-R can be used to measure suicidality in research settings, as well as in clinical work as auxiliary tools.

  • The Relationship Between Conspiracy Mentality, Personality Traits, Stress
           Coping Strategies and Psychological Well-Being

    • Authors: Emilija Jucevičiūtė Olga Zamalijeva Miglė Giedraitytė
Abstract: Conspiracy theories and people’s tendency to believe them have recently attracted a great deal of scientific attention because of the widespread nature of conspiracy beliefs, their potential to influence people’s behaviour and endanger public safety. To understand what leads people to believe in conspiracies, it is important to consider both intrinsic personal factors as well as external, learned factors that are related to the person’s environment. This study aims to explore which psychological factors contribute directly and indirectly to the propensity to believe conspiracy theories. The study involved 173 participants (80.3% women). The age of the participants ranged from 18 to 70 years (M = 33.34; SD = 14.62). The Conspiracy mentality scale was used to measure the subjects’ general tendency to believe in conspiracy theories. The participants’ Big Five personality traits, psychological well-being, and stress coping strategies were also assessed. The results of linear regression and path analysis show that the propensity to believe in conspiracy theories is directly predicted by social well-being, religion and avoidance coping which are used to reduce stress. In addition, conspiracy mentality has been found to be indirectly predicted by personality traits of extraversion and neuroticism, through social well-being and avoidance coping; in addition, path analysis revealed direct associations between the tendency to believe in conspiracy and extraversion. Skepticism (one of conspiracy mentality subscales) is directly predicted by avoidance coping strategy. Extraversion predicts propensity to believe conspiracy theories directly and – together with neuroticism – indirectly through social well-being and avoidance coping.

  • Psychometric Properties of Career Decision-Making Difficulties
           Questionnaire: Lithuanian Version

    • Authors: Tadas Vadvilavičius Donata Burčikaitė Karolina Jakštaitytė Tadas Petrulis
Abstract: Valid and reliable methods are needed to assess the difficulties young people often face in making career-related decisions. A cross-sectional study was conducted to test the psychometric characteristics (internal consistency, discriminant, convergent and structural validities) of the Lithuanian version of the Career decision-making difficulties questionnaire (Gati et al., 1996) in a sample of Lithuanian students (N = 255). The results revealed that the Lithuanian version of Career decision-making difficulties has good internal consistency. Adequate convergent validity was confirmed by finding statistically significant positive relationships with indecisiveness, and discriminant validity was confirmed by finding statistically significant negative relationships with career self-efficacy. Finally, structural validity was confirmed by confirmatory factor analysis, which revealed that a 10-factor structure was the most appropriate. The results of the research showed that the Lithuanian version of the Career decision-making difficulties questionnaire is a suitable measurement tool, but further studies on the evaluation of the scale are needed.

  • Lithuanian Conceptual Colour–Emotion Associations in the Global
           Context of 37 Nations

    • Authors: Domicelė Jonauskaitė
Abstract: Red with anger or green with envy – such metaphors link colours and emotions. While such colour metaphors vary across languages, conceptual associations between colours and emotions have many cross-cultural similarities. Here, we took published data from 8615 participants (2172 men) coming from 37 nations (i.e., Austria, Azerbaijan, Belgium, China, Colombia, Croatia, Cyprus, Egypt, Estonia, Finland, France, Georgia, Germany, Greece, India, Iran, Israel, Italy, Japan, Latvia, Lithuania, Mexico, Netherlands, New Zealand, Nigeria, Norway, Philippines, Poland, Russia, Saudi Arabia, Serbia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Ukraine, United Kingdom, and United States) and analysed Lithuanian (n = 217) associations between colour terms and emotion concepts. Lithuanians had many associations, the most frequent being red–love, yellow–amusement,

  • An Examination of the MMPI-2 and MMPI-2-RF Validity Scales in Detecting
           Malingering and Dissimulation of Psychopathology

    • Authors: Mantas Patašius Alfredas Laurinavičius
Abstract: This article examined the responsiveness of the MMPI-2 and MMPI-2-RF validity scales to simulation and dissimulation of psychopathology. Two experiments were performed. The simulation study included 66 participants (33 in the control group and 33 in the experimental group, age M = 36.76, SD = 15.24) and the dissimulation study included 60 patients diagnosed with a mental disorder (30 in the control group and 30 in the experimental group, M = 40.32, SD = 15.79). In both experiments, all participants completed the MMPI-2 questionnaire. Participants in the control group were given standard instructions, while participants in the experimental groups received instructions to either simulate symptoms of mental disorders or present themselves as completely healthy. Differences in the expected direction of the MMPI-2 psychopathology scales between the experimental and control groups indicated that the study instruction had an effect on the responses of the study participants. The results of the comparison of the validity scales showed that the majority of the MMPI-2 and MMPI-2-RF scales respond to an attempt to provide false information about oneself. Estimates of validity scales were statistically significantly different between control and experimental groups in both simulation and dissimulation studies, and the difference effect was mostly large. The obtained results show that the MMPI-2 and MMPI-2-RF are able to successfully recognize the simulation and dissimulation of psychopathology, which can be of p...

Positive Emotions Partially Compensate the Effects of Loneliness and Trait
           Anxiety on Well-being

    • Authors: Justina Kymantienė Arūnas Žiedelis Laima Bulotaitė
Abstract: Jau kuris laikas socialiniai tinklai yra tapę įprasta kasdienių socialinių sąveikų terpe.

  • Preschool and School-aged Children’s Problematic Internet Use: The Role
of Parental Involvement, Parental Attitude on the Internet Use and
           Children’s Activities Online

    • Authors: Valerija Puchalska Roma Jusienė Rima Breidokienė
Abstract: The use of the Internet for communication, education, and entertainment has become an important part of the lives of all users, including teenagers and children. The role of parents is considered to be important to ensure children’s safe use of the Internet and to protect them from excessive involvement in online activities. The current study aimed to investigate the associations between problematic Internet use in children aged 6–14 years and their parents’ involvement in their children’s Internet use and parents’ attitudes towards their child’s Internet use. The sample consisted of 719 parents with children aged six to fourteen years (mean age 9.04 years, 55.2% of the sample were boys). Parents completed the Compulsive Internet Use Scale (Meerkerk et al., 2009) to assess their children’s problematic Internet use, and answered questions about their attitudes towards the impact of the Internet on their child’s health and relationships, their involvement in their child’s Internet use, their child’s online activities, and the time spent using screens. The data were collected as part of the research project „Long-term effects of screens on children’s physical and mental health“, in spring 2021. The results showed that children’s problematic Internet use (PIU) is related to children’s age, the total duration of screen use, online activities, and parents’ attitudes on the impact of the Internet on children’s health and relationships. In a sample of children aged 6–10 years, greater PIU was predicted by male gender, longer screen time, greater children’s involvement in online entertainment and social activities, and less favorable parental attitudes toward children’s health and relationships. Similarly, the same variables predicted PIU in 11–14-year-olds, except for social activities online. The relationships between the variables were also analyzed using structural equation modeling: models add to the results by indicating indirect associations between parental attitudes towards the Internet and children’s PIU in both age groups. In contrast, it is only in younger children that parental involvement indirectly predicts PIN.
