  • Global discourse and local coping and hoping during the COVID-19 pandemic

    • Authors: Colleen Loomis, Christina Dimakos, Alexis Gilmer
Abstract: The COVID-19 pandemic touches every corner of the globe with unprecedented effects and implications. This special issue gathers knowledge, insight, experiences, and learnings about the profound impacts of the COVID-19 virus on communities from 12 countries. It presents six carefully selected manuscripts that reflect the ongoing conversation in our field about how the needs of the world’s most vulnerable populations can be served by the field’s values and paradigms. The reader will learn about collective symbolic coping, crisis management, barriers to and facilitators of supports and resources, mobilization of local networks of care, social toxicity and social possibility, coping strategies, affective impacts of confinement, the development of relationships between different social actors, the engagement of refugees and refugee-led organizations on the front lines of COVID-19, and even the buffering effects of gardening against the psychological impacts of isolation. Despite the grim reality of COVID-19, a thread of resilience, empowerment, and sense of community emerges loud and clear, and each manuscript is written with that same spirit and core tenet of community psychology that has always been our guiding light. During one of the most trying times of our lifetime, the need for a strong sense of community and mutual support will be a critical, if not determining, factor in how we continue to cope with this pandemic. It is our hope that this issue will inspire hope and reinforce the tools and competencies of community psychology to bring about positive enduring change within individual, family, peer, and community systems.

  • The "plantito/plantita" home gardening during the pandemic

    • Authors: Archie Balingit Sunga, Jowie Lumanog Advincula
Abstract: The COVID-19 pandemic has affected every segment of life, including health, economy, education, and social ecologies. Quarantine measures have forced people to stay inside their homes, leading to the “new normal” of living and adaptation. One activity that has been among Filipinos during the onset of the lockdown until the present time is the increased engagement in gardening. Home gardening suddenly became a widespread activity in rural and urban areas. The use of the words “plantito” [male] and “plantita” [female] denote someone who enjoys taking care of plants. This qualitative study aims to explore and describe the rise of home gardening among Filipinos during the pandemic. A total of 104 participants answered an online survey containing open-ended questions. They described a “plantito/plantita” as a plant lover and nurturer and reported home gardening as a way of connecting with nature, a psychological experience, and an interest. The benefits include stress relief and improved mood. Further studies on home gardening and mental health and possible opportunities to incorporate this activity in communities are warranted.

  • The asylum system and the COVID-19 pandemic in the city of Lisbon:
Existing disparities, structural problems and new insights

    • Authors: Erica Briozzo, José Ornelas, Maria João Vargas Moniz
Abstract: Existing vulnerabilities have been exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic. The present case study from the city of Lisbon explores the existing disparities and structural problems within the asylum system based on analysis of multimedia data. The experience of the COVID-19 pandemic emphasizes findings suggesting the importance of different forms of solidarity and activism both newly found and existing, such as the meaningful and substantive participation of refugees and civil society, engaged in the front line to deal with the crisis. This study provides insights for transformative change of asylum policies, stressing a more holistic and systematic perspective and fostering the involvement of refugees and asylum seekers in government planning and policy processes to build back better policies.

  • Contextual influences on Italian university students during the COVID-19
lockdown: Emotional responses, coping strategies and resilience

    • Authors: Laura Migliorini, Norma De Piccoli, Paola Cardinali, Chiara Rollero, Daniela Marzana, Caterina Arcidiacono, Elisa Guidi, Ciro Esposito, Cinzia Novara, Angela Fedi, Elena Marta, Andrea Guazzini, Patrizia Meringolo, Maria Grazia Monaci, Barbara Agueli, Fortuna Procentese, Immacolata Di Napoli
Abstract: Based on an ecological perspective on the COVID-19 lockdown experience, this study describes psychological responses among Italian university students. Our study considers three zones of the country that have differed in the intensity of the COVID-19 pandemic. Specifically, this research explores whether differences in pandemic conditions can account for their divergent psychological outcomes. The participants were 792 university students from seven different Italian universities. Students were asked to express their emotions and describe meaningful events during the lockdown in writing. Based on the grounded theory approach, this study conducted qualitative data analysis using ATLAS.ti 8.0. The core emerged categories are emotions, emotional moods and state of mind, coping strategies, and resilience. The results describing these emergent factors in relation to environmental variables highlight differences in the feeling of anxiety among individuals: anxiety was more self-focused in zones that were more affected by the lockdown, while such anxiety was more related to family and friends in less-affected zones. In addition to identifying the negative repercussions that this emergency has had, this study describes some positive outcomes, such as the elaboration of new personal perspectives that help foster individual growth and allow individuals to gain new awareness of themselves and others. The confinement due to the COVID-19 emergency measures has been a very unique experience for people, and further research is needed to understand the long-term effects of the different coping responses activated by participants during and after the lockdown.

  • Sensemaking processes and social representations of COVID-19 in
multi-voiced public discourse: Illustrative examples of institutional and
           media communication in ten countries

    • Authors: Annamaria Silvana de Rosa, Terri Mannarini, Lorena Gil de Montes, Andrei Holman, Mary Anne Lauri, Lilian Negura, Andréia Isabel Giacomozzi, Andréa Barbará da Silva Bousfield, Ana Maria Justo, Martha de Alba, Susana Seidmann, Risa Permanadeli, Karabo Sitto, Elizabeth Lubinga
Abstract: The role of communication in a pandemic emergency is crucial because it contributes to the spread of collective interpretations of the crisis that drive community responses. Based on the social representations’ theory approach, and specifically relying on the notions of collective symbolic coping and polemical social representations, the study presents 10 country-based case studies of public communication with the aim of exploring the social representations of COVID-19 during the first wave of the outbreak. Multiple communication sources from 10 countries in 5 geo-cultural contexts (Europe, North America, Latin America, Asia, Africa) were selected and analyzed: institutional websites; international/national/local newspapers and news channels; national/international press agencies; and social media platforms. Results highlighted the prevalence of multivocality and polemical social representations, along with outgroup blaming and stigmatization processes, the use of military and naturalistic metaphors, antinomies, and discourse polarization. Implications for effective public communication in crisis management are discussed.

  • “Yes, they were suffering, but we brought the music”: Social toxicity
and possibility during the COVID-19 pandemic onset for undocumented and
           unhoused people

    • Authors: S. Sylvane Vaccarino-Ruiz, Katherine Quinteros, Valeria Alonso Blanco, Daniel Rodriguez Ramirez, Regina Day Langhout, Daniel Copulsky, Miguel A. Lopezzi
Abstract: Under a neoliberal regime and a pandemic crisis, social toxicity is expected (Klien, 2008). Yet, social possibility and opportunities for cohesion and collectivism can occur. We discuss how social toxicity and possibility sit side by side during the COVID-19 pandemic with an emphasis on the glimmerings of mutual aid for those who are undocumented and unhoused in Santa Cruz county. Given the stay-at-home orders we, a graduate community psychology class, enacted photovoice online to analyze our context. We discerned a spectrum of possibilities as they coincided with toxicity, We present two examples of how social possibility and toxicity are mixed and two examples of social possibility that include some aspects of mutual aid. These discernments can expand understanding of mutual aid and help the community psychologist know where to apply pressure and how to move forward to work toward social justice

  • Stimulating and building compassionate and humanising networks for
promoting sustainable safer and healthier communities: Researcher
reflexivity on the Local Network of Care (LNOC)

    • Authors: Naiema Taliep, Ghouwa Ismail, Samed Bulbulia, Seneca Louw
Abstract: There is a current burgeoning interest in networking as an approach to working more effectively in under-resourced communities. This study explores networking as a critical strategy to strengthen relationships among social actors and mobilise assets and resources to address challenges of health, safety, injury, and social justice in disadvantaged communities. The Local Network of Care (LNOC), is used as an illustration, to reflect on the operational processes and values of the network to engender and build just and sustainable safer communities. Primary sources of data include newspaper clippings, LNOC social contract, institutional annual reports, monthly agendas, attendance registers, and reflective notes of members of the LNOC. The findings illustrate that building a humanising, cohesive, supportive and trusting network can contribute to strengthening agency and transforming individuals and organisations. Additionally, it can contribute to sustainability, building safer and just communities, and mobilise assets and resources of the network to help mitigate psychosocial and economic challenges.
