  • What the future looks like: Heralding the unique missions of translational
           issues in psychological science.

Abstract: Translational Issues in Psychological Science (TPS) continues to be a journal uniquely positioned at the cutting edge of psychology in that it pushes our discipline into new terrains. Since its inception in 2014, TPS has maintained a focus on bridging subdisciplines across our field and translating findings beyond the silos of academia. In this way, it is an instrumental journal in the growth of our field as we see psychology intersecting with all facets of life. This translational focus makes TPS unique, yet baked into this approach is a second and equally important mission of the journal: to elevate the experiences of students and early career researchers by offering them a training ground in the publishing world. Our journal’s authors, peer reviewers, and editorial board members are students and postdoctoral researchers, while the guiding principle of our journal continues to be mentorship in editorial work. TPS is the official journal of the American Psychological Association of Graduate Students (APAGS) and continues to be a destination journal for our student members. It is the intersection of these two missions that editor wanted to discuss for their inaugural editorial as editor-in-chief. Either of these goals, that of translating psychological science or advancing early careerists, treated independently are worthy enough to stand on their own. To experience them together in one publication is nothing short of powerful. (PsycInfo Database Record (c) 2024 APA, all rights reserved)

  • Psychology and social cohesion.

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Humans determine who they can trust in a few different ways: by learning from ongoing social relationships, cultivating shared group identities, and building effective social institutions. All three can produce forms of social cohesion, but the latter (institutions) may prove crucial for broad cohesion in pluralistic societies. In this special issue, we present six articles on the psychology of social cohesion. They represent a wide range of contexts and scales; examining, for example, social cohesion among Black lesbian, gay, bisexual, and queer youth within school environments, volunteering behavior and community solidarity, the influence of different forms of intergroup contact on cohesion versus social change, and using wise reasoning to reduce conflict. Broadly, these six articles highlight the nuanced antecedents of social cohesion and its relationships with belongingness, cooperation, and intergroup conflict. Taken together, we hope this special issue highlights the importance of social cohesion for psychological research, as well as addressing major societal challenges. • Social cohesion and volunteering: Correlates, causes, and challenges.

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Recent declines in volunteering rates and reduced governmental support for volunteer infrastructure in the United States and the United Kingdom present a clear policy challenge of how and whether to bolster levels of volunteering. Despite common assumptions that volunteering is both a critical antecedent and product of social cohesion (i.e., the vertical and horizontal connections between people that bind society), particularly during times of political distrust, the validity of these assumptions has not been fully established. Drawing primarily from evidence from the United Kingdom and United States, this review critically explores what is currently known about the relationship between social cohesion and volunteering. Specifically, we consider how investment in social cohesion may enhance volunteer engagement and how investment in volunteering infrastructure may support and sustain social cohesion. Overall, we find consistent evidence of a bidirectional relationship between social cohesion and volunteering, though the strength of these relationships is dependent on the specific forms of social cohesion and volunteering that are involved. Both policy and research require greater clarity in conceptualizations of social cohesion and volunteering. Further empirical evidence is needed to establish proposed causal links. Based on the current evidence, we propose that policy should start with a strategy for building social cohesion within specific communities in ways that increase volunteer engagement and its benefits, and that the strategies must consider both the intragroup and intergroup implications of these interventions. • How schools can bolster belonging among Black lesbian, gay, bisexual, and
           queer youth.

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Using an intersectional framework, the current study examined how perceptions of school safety and identity valuation influenced Black lesbian, gay, bisexual, and queer (LGBQ+) students’ feelings of school belonging in three schools where the student bodies were predominantly Black. Research on school belonging has focused on the experiences of white LGBQ+ youth or examined disparities in belonging through a singular identity (e.g., exclusively race). Moreover, while research has considered the role of safety in predicting belonging, this work has not considered ways that school context might particularly speak to or affirm the identities of students coming from multiply marginalized groups. To address this gap in the literature, we present a model of school belonging that centers on the experiences of Black LGBQ+ youth. Moderated mediation analyses revealed significant indirect effects of sexual identity on school belonging through both school safety and identity valuation, and these effects depended on participant race. Recommendations for school programming that attends to the unique needs of Black LGBQ+ students are discussed. (PsycInfo Database Record (c) 2024 APA, all rights reserved)

  • Comparing the roles of positive and supportive intergroup contact on
social cohesion and social change: Theoretical extensions and practical
           implications.

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: A common approach to building social cohesion involves programming that fosters contact between social groups. However, some scholars are wary of this approach, suggesting that instead of seeking to promote improved attitudes and greater cohesion between groups through contact, efforts should first focus on addressing and achieving greater social equality and change. In light of these debates, the present review will compare and contrast two types of intergroup contact—positive contact and supportive contact—in terms of their short- and long-term implications for social cohesion and social change. We then highlight the importance of these implications for practitioners to consider when designing contact-based programs, and we offer recommendations for future research and practice to maximize the likelihood of achieving desired outcomes and minimize the potential for unintentional harm. • Bridging social divides: The role of wise reasoning in improving
           intergroup relations.

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Intergroup conflicts spark negativity against opposing groups and fuel social divisions. To improve social cohesion across group differences, effective strategies that help group members deescalate conflict-related hostilities and improve intergroup relations are crucial. Increasing research on psychological wisdom addresses this issue. It offers new actionable insights that will help individuals form more positive attitudes and interactions during intergroup conflicts. In this article, we provide a timely, relevant, and practical review of the role of wise reasoning (WR) in improving intergroup relations. In particular, we draw from recent research to introduce the study of WR, and then we synthesize emerging empirical evidence to argue that WR helps improve intergroup relations via its effects on promoting cooperation, mitigating affective polarization, and encouraging respectful discourse. Further, we examine the benefits of WR to explore potential psychological mechanisms. Building on the evidence, we conclude with practical recommendations for more effectively improving intergroup relations to ultimately increase collaboration and solidarity across groups. We encourage more future research and interventions to investigate these promising avenues. (PsycInfo Database Record (c) 2024 APA, all rights reserved)

  • Our group is worth the fight: Group cohesion is embedded in willingness to
fight or die for relatively deprived political groups during national
           elections.

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: National elections heighten the risk for political violence. Using the U.S. 2022 midterm election and the Brazilian 2022 runoff presidential election as a context, the research presented here implicates the role of leadership in constructing a sense of group cohesion for which constituents may be willing to violently defend from their political rivals. Specifically, that feeling represented by one’s political leader (i.e., that one’s political leader is prototypical) enhances perceptions of political group entitativity, which in turn predicts willingness to fight or die to defend the in-group against a political out-group. This relationship is strengthened by the perception that constituents are unjustly deprived of societal wealth and resources compared to other groups in their respective society. These findings are consistent across two correlational samples (total N = 680) during the heated 2022 U.S. midterm elections and the runoff vote for Brazil’s 2022 presidential election. Our findings add to a social identity-based analysis of leadership, particularly how prototypical leaders may engage in identity entrepreneurship to enhance group cohesion by uniting group members with a collective narrative of deprivation which may ultimately motivate political violence. • How group characteristics determine the relationship between perceived
group cohesion and collective action intentions.

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: We suggest that the relationship between group cohesion and collective action intentions may be affected by the characteristics of the group taking the action. However, understanding this relationship is made difficult by challenges associated with defining and measuring cohesion, and how it differs from social identification. We conducted an online survey (N = 331), in which we asked participants to nominate a group of which they were a member, then answer questions about the characteristics of that group. Then, they completed measures of perceived group cohesion and social identification, read a scenario about their group being told to disband, and then completed a measure of collective action intentions. A factor analysis showed that the measures of group cohesion and social identification were conflated, but that the items could be divided into four constructs that differentiated between in-group bonds, task cohesion, self-and-group commonalities, and in-group centrality-diffusion, respectively. We found that group characteristics changed the relationships between those constructs and collective action intentions. Thus, researchers seeking to study the effect of group cohesion on action intentions should consider both the nature of the group and the measurement of cohesion in the design of their research, as both aspects will affect their findings.
