      Abstract: The American Psychological Association’s (APA) Board of Educational Affairs has, over the last decade, commissioned working groups to set a national agenda for introductory psychology. Through the APA’s Introductory Psychology Initiative, experts produced the first comprehensive guidance on course design, instructor training, and student success. These special sections of Scholarship of Teaching and Learning in Psychology represent a continuation of the effort to ensure that introductory psychology reaches its life-changing potential. The first special section, published in the current issue of the journal, includes four articles that provide a broad overview of the Introductory Psychology course as it currently stands and as it might be envision based on the APA’s Introductory Psychology Initiative. Another special section will be published in the next issue of the journal. The second special section consists of five empirical studies of instructional methods used in the course.   • The introductory psychology course in the 21st century: The challenge of
           finding common ground.

      Abstract: This article addresses the myriad challenges that teachers of introductory psychology face regardless of the context in which they teach. We specifically explore the many variables that may make introductory psychology so challenging, including delivering a comparable course experience across different contexts. We discuss the recommendations made by the American Psychological Association Introductory Psychology Initiative (APA-IPI) regarding student learning outcomes that can be adopted for any course design. The article concludes with a review of some thematic approaches that can build upon APA-IPI recommendations and also enhance student engagement and performance metrics in measuring the quality of introductory psychology courses.   • Course belonging and engagement in introductory psychology: Why they
           matter and what predicts them.

      Abstract: As a “gateway” to the psychology major, Introductory Psychology should facilitate student mastery of foundational material and spark future interest in psychology. The current research examined predictors of these key course outcomes in two semesters of a college Introductory Psychology course (N = 508 students). Two studies examined the role of course belonging and engagement (i.e., “gusto” for the course content) in predicting grades and future interest in courses and research, as well as the role of student demographics, relationships, and course impressions in predicting belonging and engagement. Study 1 focused on the end of the semester and found that both belonging and engagement predicted final grades, but engagement was the only unique predictor of future interest. Belonging and engagement were predicted by different student demographic, relationship, and course-impression factors. Study 2 focused on a subsample of students from Study 1 (N = 296) to analyze the role of early belonging and engagement in predicting several outcomes. Early engagement predicted the first exam grade, and early belonging predicted students’ later course impressions (of lectures and discussion sections). Early belonging and engagement predicted end-of-semester belonging and engagement, but student demographic, relationship, and course-impression factors remained unique predictors of end-of-semester belonging and engagement, even controlling for early belonging and engagement. Taken together, these findings indicate that belonging and engagement, both early and at the end of Introductory Psychology, are shaped by different combinations of students’ characteristics, relationships, and course impressions, and have distinct implications for course achievement and continuing interest in psychology.   • Reimagining how we teach introductory psychology: Support for instructors
           adopting the recommendations of the APA Introductory Psychology
           Initiative.

      Abstract: The future of the Introductory Psychology course rests on the ability of its instructors to teach in ways aligned with our field’s learning objectives, using evidence-based practices to engage and inspire their students. In this article, the Teacher Training and Development Team of the American Psychological Association’s Introductory Psychology Initiative (IPI) provides models that will enable both novice and experienced instructors to integrate IPI’s student learning outcomes and offers examples of assignments that instructors can adopt immediately. Concrete examples will help Introductory Psychology instructors find practical ways to enhance their teaching and to help their students achieve greater success in learning both the skills and content of psychological science. Finally, the team offers suggestions for chairs, developers, and course administrators to support the instructors teaching in their institutions in aligning their courses with these objectives. They also provide recommendations for training and professional development more broadly, to provide sustained support that will enable Introductory Psychology instructors to maintain and expand course changes over time.   • The Introductory Psychology Census: A national study.

      Abstract: Nearly all undergraduate psychology programs in the United States (99%) offer an Introductory Psychology (IP) course (Norcross et al., 2016). Yet, there is a surprising dearth of information relating to the learning outcomes and course designs employed in IP, nor is information readily available regarding the training and support of those who teach it. Over the past 12 years, American Psychological Association (APA) working groups have made recommendations intended to strengthen IP but no empirical data are available concerning the efficacy or impact of those recommendations. This national census of IP instructors, conducted by APA’s Introductory Psychology Initiative (IPI), surveyed instructors of the course nationally to investigate how past IP recommendations have been implemented and to develop a baseline understanding of the current state and structure of the IP course. The census was structured in four parts, paralleling the four subgroups of the IPI: Student Learning Outcomes and Assessment; Course Models and Design; Teacher Training and Development; and Student Success and Transformation. We provide an overview of who teaches the course, how it is taught, how instructors’ teaching skills are developed and supported, and the extent to which evidence-based learning strategies are incorporated into the IP course.   • Implementation and evaluation of open educational and free resources to
           replace textbook in program evaluation course.

      Abstract: This initial evaluation investigated student satisfaction with open educational and free online resources replacing a textbook in a Program Evaluation course for upper-level undergraduate psychology majors. Students in five courses (N = 35) completed the course using open educational and free readings (provided on the learning management system Moodle). Both qualitative and quantitative responses indicated that the majority of students were satisfied with open educational (OER) and free online resources. An analysis of student grades comparing groups who used a traditional textbook versus groups who used OER showed no difference. This evaluation provides an example of an evaluation process for OER and some preliminary support for this particular transition from text to OER and online resources.   • Cockroaches to the rescue: A new approach to reintroduce animal labs to
           the psychology undergraduate curriculum.

      Abstract: Animal laboratories have been a central part of undergraduate psychology education for decades. Courses such as learning and animal behavior have leveraged lab experiments, often using rats and pigeons, for hands-on research and learning experiences. The cost of animals, labs, and maintenance as well as the myriad ethical considerations with animals have steadily reduced the availability of animal labs on college campuses. Virtual lab experiences offer some utility but not to the degree of actual hands-on experience. This article explores the use of the discoid cockroach (Blaberus discoidalis) as an ideal invertebrate alternative to rats and pigeons. This animal model can be actualized at a fraction of the cost and with far fewer ethical confounds. Roaches are able to be classically and operantly conditioned, thus allowing students to gain experiences similar to those gained as when using more traditional animal models. Furthermore, because there is generally a dearth of psychological research on cockroaches, and discoid roaches specifically, students have the opportunity to conduct novel research during the course of a semester-long class. This may help engage students in psychology, research, and potentially publication as well as promote increased learning outcomes.
