  • Addressing harm from adverse religious/spiritual experiences in
           psychotherapy: A scoping review.

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: In the past few decades, researchers have delineated the importance of acknowledging and addressing harm, trauma, and abuse from religion/spirituality. With this increase in awareness around these issues, the dearth of research on psychotherapeutic intervention for these concerns has become more apparent. The present scoping review is a synthesis of the psychotherapy recommendations for addressing harm from adverse religious/spiritual experiences that have been published in the peer-reviewed and grey literature. Of the 8,048 studies reviewed, 44 studies met the following inclusion criteria: were an empirical peer-reviewed article, doctoral dissertation, or master’s thesis; discussed implications to inform the process of psychotherapy; therapy implications were directed toward addressing harm, trauma, or abuse from adverse religious/spiritual experiences; and were written in English. Results were synthesized according to research characteristics and methods, conceptualization, participant demographics, therapy implications as the purpose of studies, and therapy implications as discussion commentary. Studies were frequently qualitative, grey literature, White, Christian, and U.S.-based, with therapy implications often only as discussion commentary. Recommendations for research, practice, cultural diversity, and ethics are discussed. (PsycInfo Database Record (c) 2024 APA, all rights reserved)

  • Wider, faster, more: Reenvisioning depression treatment research in the
           United States.

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Depression is among the top 10 leading causes of disability in the United States and worldwide. Although there are effective interventions, the burden of disability attributable to depression is not decreasing and has not decreased even in places where treatment availability has increased. Contemporary research efforts have a focus on treatment development and the identification of biomarkers of psychophysiology or treatment response. These potential solutions are not scalable because depression is more common than usually appreciated, and there are substantial disparities in access to mental health care. Improving the dissemination of individual interventions may also be of limited value given data suggesting that high rates of symptom remission can only be achieved with multiple (e.g., 4–10) treatment steps. The logic of stepped care approaches for depression is well supported by these data, but “stepping up” should occur more quickly than usually done in most trials and treatment needs to include both low-intensity (e.g., self-guided app) as well as very high-intensity treatments (e.g., electroconvulsive therapy or ECT). Efforts that promise to make an impact in the public health burden of depression need to consider its high prevalence and the heterogeneity in the level of care needed as well as the different mechanisms that treatments may need to engage. A model of research by lone principal investigators or small teams is unlikely to make a substantial impact on the public health burden of depression because no individual is likely to have the expertise to study radically different treatments like self-guided apps and ECT. • Military and public safety psychology.

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: One critical area of professional practice that often passes ignored by practitioners involves the unique social, environmental, and job stresses that affect those serving in military and public safety arenas. These stresses often contribute to adverse physical and mental health problems including depression and an increased risk of self-harm. Practice Innovations welcomes articles that describe service delivery innovations to these valued public service professionals. The four articles that follow involve important prevention, intervention, and resilience-building strategies with innovative components both in the United States and abroad. • Preferences of U.S. veterans making and receiving Caring Cards: A peer
           approach to recovery-oriented suicide prevention.

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Caring Cards is a peer adaptation of caring contacts for suicide prevention in which people with lived experience of suicidal thoughts and behaviors create handmade cards for peers currently experiencing suicidal thoughts and/or behaviors. The present study used data from a feasibility/acceptability study of Caring Cards at a Veterans Affairs Medical Center to explore preferences for this type of recovery-oriented suicide prevention intervention. Participants were 55 veterans with a past (card makers, n = 21) or current (card recipients, n = 34) high-risk indication for suicide. Card makers participated in a 3-month weekly 60- to 120-min group therapy to create cards. Card recipients received these cards monthly for 6 months. Survey and interview data were collected postintervention. Pragmatic analysis of interview responses revealed preferences related to participation length, card content and frequency, group formatting, and accessibility. Among both card makers (76.2%–85.7%) and card recipients (94.1%), a majority recommended offering this intervention for veterans who have previously or are currently struggling with mental health concerns. Over 60% of card makers wanted to receive cards, and 52.9% of card recipients wanted to make cards. These data further support the importance of lived experience voices in intervention development. Caring Cards, an intervention specifically focusing on improving well-being, meaning-making, and fulfillment in one’s life, regards veteran preferences as salient in the future implementation of a recovery-oriented approach to suicide prevention. • Adapting trauma-informed interventions for racial trauma considerations: A
           training model.

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Racial stress and trauma (RST) represent an increasing risk for mental health sequelae for people of color. There exists a need to enhance training for mental health providers (MHPs) in best practices concerning RST. To meet this need, this article describes the design of the Addressing Racial Stress and Trauma (ARST) workshop, which integrates principles of cognitive behavioral therapy and multicultural therapy. The ARST provides guidance to MHPs utilizing evidence-based trauma-focused cognitive behavioral protocols and skills such as: (a) identifying relevant cultural factors related to posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and RST; (b) assessing the presence of RST in the context of posttraumatic stress; and (c) using specific strategies for integrating cultural sensitivity into the treatment of PTSD and RST. The ARST workshop provides educational content that can be tailored to setting or population in an initial 2-hr format, health professions students took part in ARST, tailored to a university counseling setting. A pilot evaluation of pre–post training data showed: (a) multicultural attitudes were positively affected, (b) factual knowledge improved, and (c) pre–post shifts in intent to apply training content to practice emerged. These early outcomes are particularly valuable given the early career stage of trainees; provision of training for culturally competence, especially during the early stages of one’s clinical career, may have positive impacts on use of such skills and client experience. The ARST workshop adds to an emerging literature attending to the impact of racism through first-line evidence-based trauma-focused therapies. Implications and future directions for training, practice, and ARST development are provided. (PsycInfo Database Record (c) 2024 APA, all rights reserved)

  • Effects of resistance training on mental health and sleep outcomes among
           women with posttraumatic stress disorder.

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Women living with posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) face significant co-occurring mental health concerns and behavioral risk factors (e.g., poor sleep). Increasing evidence demonstrates that exercise can positively impact diverse health-related domains among populations with PTSD, yet analyses which examine these conditions among women are rare. To address this gap, this analysis examined the effects of a 3-week resistance training program on depression, anxiety, sleep, and PTSD among women who screened positive for PTSD. This investigation analyzed pooled data from two methodologically similar randomized controlled trials (i.e., a pilot and a replication study). Participants (n = 40) were randomly assigned to exercise (n = 20) or non-exercise time-matched control (n = 20). Data were analyzed with repeated-measures analysis of variance (ANOVA). Results revealed significant improvements in depression, F(1, 32) = 5.47, p = .02; anxiety, F(1, 32) = 7.75, p = .009; and sleep, F(1, 32) = 12.62, p = .001, from pre-post intervention in the intervention group relative to controls. Significant improvements were also found pre-post intervention in PTSD symptoms in both exercise and control groups, F(1, 32) = 52.63, p < .001. Findings suggest that exercise improves mental health and sleep among women with PTSD. Taken together, these results suggest that exercise may be used as a therapeutic treatment option for women with PTSD. (PsycInfo Database Record (c) 2024 APA, all rights reserved)

  • Functional impairment, internalized stigma, and well-being: Considerations
for recovery-oriented suicide prevention for U.S. veterans with serious
           mental illness.

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Veterans Health Administration’s (VHA) Psychosocial Rehabilitation and Recovery Centers (PRRCs) provide recovery-oriented care to veterans with serious mental illness (SMI). As part of program evaluation, PRRC providers regularly assess recovery-oriented outcomes. Given the high rates of suicidal thoughts and behaviors among veterans with SMI, understanding such outcomes in relation to suicide risk is crucial. Among veterans entering a PRRC (N = 4,731), the present study aimed to (a) report suicidal ideation frequency in the past 2 weeks across demographics and psychiatric diagnoses, (b) explore rates of current functional impairment, internalized stigma, and well-being, and (c) examine differences in suicidal ideation frequency and functional impairment, internalized stigma, and well-being. Measurements before treatment were utilized. Younger (ρ = −0.08, p < .001), married (z = −5.23, p < .001) veterans, those not identifying as Black or African American (z = −4.80, p < .001), not diagnosed with schizophrenia (z = −6.97, p < .001), diagnosed with depressive disorders (z = −8.79, p < .001), anxiety disorders (z = −5.01, p < .001), posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD; z = −7.69, p < .001), or personality disorders (z = −7.12, p < .001) were significantly more likely to endorse suicidal ideation. Veterans in this cohort had higher than average functional impairment (M = 18.05, SD = 9.85), mild internalized stigma (M = 2.36, SD = 0.51), and lower than average well-being (M = 18.96, SD = 3.93). The more often a veteran reported thinking about suicide in the past 2 weeks, the more likely the veteran viewed themselves to be more functionally impaired (p < .001), reported higher levels of internalized stigma (p < .001), and reported lower levels of well-being (p < .001). Findings and limitations, particularly the suicidal ideation frequency measurement, are discussed to contextualize suggestions to integrate recovery-oriented practices and suicide prevention care. • Law enforcement mental health: Strategies and issues in prevention and
           treatment.

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Our communities rely on law enforcement to perform their duties effectively and make sound judgments in response to life-threatening situations. Yet, previous research indicates that police officers are at increased risk for the development of a wide range of mental health problems, most notably anxiety, depression, substance use, sleep problems, posttraumatic stress disorder, and suicide. Further, there is considerable evidence documenting an association between these difficulties and officers’ high levels of exposure to traumatic events. The global pandemic and social unrest of the past few years have also contributed greatly to the stresses and challenges of policing. In this paper, we review prevention (Critical Incident Stress Management, Behavioral Health Training, and Peer Support Programs) and intervention (Motivational Interviewing, Disconnected Values Model, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing, Problem-Solving Therapy, and Mindfulness) strategies that have shown promise in clinical applications with law enforcement personnel. The unique and impactful stressors of police work underscore the importance of mental health resources tailored to this population. The stigma and cultural barriers that have historically discouraged police officers from seeking treatment are discussed. The need to remedy this situation through culturally competent and available mental health professionals, and utilization of evidence-based modalities, is highlighted.
