  • Increasing physical activity in adults using self-tailored deposit
           contacts.

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Physical inactivity can contribute to serious chronic ill health effects such as heart disease, hypertension, obesity, type II diabetes, and even cancer (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2017). Interventions designed to increase physical activity are needed to help address this socially significant issue. The current study was designed to replicate and extend past work to determine whether self-tailored deposit contracts could be used to increase physical activity (i.e., minutes exercised per week) at a gym for three sedentary adults using a changing-criterion design. Minutes exercised increased for all three participants, and participants met all of their goals across the 6-week intervention. In a follow-up, physical activity decreased but remained above that obtained during baseline. This research adds support to a growing body of literature showing that behaviorally based interventions such as self-tailored deposit contracts can be used to increase physical activity in gym settings with adults. • Systematic review and meta-analysis of between-group and single-case
physical activity interventions for people with intellectual disabilities.

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Physical activity has been shown to benefit not only health outcomes in people with intellectual disabilities (ID) but also reduce challenging behavior and increase on task behavior. The goal of this review is to update and extend Lancioni and O’Reilly (1998) literature review of physical activity for people with severe to profound ID. Specifically, this review sought to determine how physical activity was being used to increase health-related outcomes with people with mild to profound ID or related disabilities (e.g., Down’s syndrome, traumatic brain injury), and how physical activity has been used as an intervention. Findings from the review indicate that intensity of the physical activity used may have an effect on the outcomes as well. Finally, this review highlighted the need for more research on physical activity for people with ID. (PsycInfo Database Record (c) 2021 APA, all rights reserved)

  • Direct versus indirect competition in sports: A review of behavioral
           interventions.

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: For over 50 years, numerous behavioral interventions have been applied across different sports to increase the performance of competing athletes (Martin et al., 2004; Schenk & Miltenberger, 2019). When a base of supporting literature has grown, systematic reviews can be used to summarize findings and help define the limits of generality of the procedures researched (Hagopian, 2020). In this review, sports were categorized by competition type according to the behavioral contingency and the role of the opponent, as defined by the rules of the sport. This categorization may serve researchers and practitioners in considering the impact of the opponent on the generality of behavior change, thus informing interventions and procedures. In direct competition sports, the opponent serves as an antecedent stimulus setting the occasion for, interfering with, changing the topography of, or otherwise influencing sports performance. In indirect competition sports, the opponent is prohibited from interference by rule and competition is limited to setting (or beating) a score or criteria. To assess direct and indirect competition sports, data were extracted from 64 experiments intervening to improve the performance of competing athletes across 18 sports. Despite stringent criteria, such as including studies with competing athletes only, these categories were equally represented. Results indicated some procedures were specific to a category and generality of intervention effects into competition settings was assessed more in direct than indirect competition sports experiments. Also, few experiments included participants competing at the highest levels. The limits of generality of sport behavior change into competition settings are discussed. • The effects of heart rate feedback on physical activity during treadmill
           exercise.

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Exercise often has a positive impact on quality of life, from mental well-being to reducing the likelihood of health-related diseases. Despite these benefits, many individuals do not exercise. Research suggests that boredom, or a lack of reinforcement, can be a reason for low exercise levels. Feedback has been used widely in the literature and, in some cases, can act as a reinforcer. Heart rate feedback is real-time information during exercise. Therefore, the primary purpose of the study was to evaluate the effect of heart rate feedback on participant-initiated modifications to exercise intensity during treadmill exercise of three neurotypical women. Two out of three participants increased the frequency of physical intensity modifications during heartrate feedback sessions (M = 97%). The methods of this study successfully increased how often two out of three participants modified the physical intensity of their exercise behavior while receiving heart rate feedback. • An evaluation of daily competitions and incentives on gym attendance.

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Only a small percentage of Americans meet recommended physical activity guidelines. In an effort to increase physical activity through attending the gym, the current study evaluated how gym attendance was affected by providing incentives and daily competition to gym members. We conducted two studies with more than 100 gym members. First, we used an alternating-treatments design with two conditions: typical gym days and gym days with a physical activity competition and incentive for the winner. Gym attendance was substantially higher on days with an added competition and incentive compared to typical days. We then conducted a component analysis, using an alternating-treatments design with three conditions: typical gym days, competition without incentives, and incentives without a competition. Gym attendance was higher in both the competition without incentive and incentive without competition conditions compared to typical gym days, with the highest levels of attendance occurring in the incentive-only condition. Results of the two studies suggest that providing incentives to gym members can increase group gym attendance. Increasing gym attendance has the potential socially important implication of increasing Americans’ physical activity and overall health. (PsycInfo Database Record (c) 2021 APA, all rights reserved)

  • Effects of incentives and prompts on sedentary and walking behaviors in
           university employees.

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Research suggests that meeting the Center for Disease Control guidelines for weekly physical activity cannot negate the health effects of sitting for more than 10 hr per day. Therefore, office workers would benefit from interventions to decrease sitting and increase physical activity. Sixteen university office workers were randomly assigned to a Prompts + Feedback, Incentives + Feedback, or Incentives + Prompts + Feedback intervention. In baseline, participants wore Fitbits during work hours. In the Prompts + Feedback condition, Fitbits vibrated, and participants received a text-message prompt instructing them to walk 400 steps every hour. In the Incentives + Feedback condition, participants received monetary reinforcement according to an escalating schedule starting at $.25 per hour. The Incentives + Prompts + Feedback condition combined the other two treatments. Prompts + Feedback was the most effective intervention, with an increase in intervals active for two out of three participants. Hourly intervals may be a more efficient way of affecting both sitting time and stepping behavior. Reinforcement characteristics may have reduced the effectiveness of the incentives including magnitude and immediacy. (PsycInfo Database Record (c) 2021 APA, all rights reserved)

  • An evaluation of token and monetary reinforcement on physical activity
exhibited by adults with intellectual disabilities in a group home
           setting.

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: The purpose of this study was to compare the effectiveness of token reinforcement and monetary reinforcement for increasing physical activity among adults with intellectual disability, to assess preference for token or monetary reinforcement, and to evaluate the effects of choice of reinforcement procedure on physical activity. An ABAB design with an alternating treatments design was used to compare token and monetary reinforcement. In the second intervention phase, the participants chose between the 2 reinforcement conditions. Results showed that both reinforcement conditions increased physical activity. • Using video modeling and video feedback to improve olympic weightlifting
           technique.

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Behavioral coaching procedures have been evaluated and enhanced over the years to find the most effective interventions for athletic performance in a variety of sports settings. Different types of feedback have been evaluated for effectiveness in teaching and improving skills. The purpose of this study was to extend the research on behavior analytic interventions in sports performance by examining the effects of video modeling and video feedback to improve technique for three novice athletes in a fitness program incorporating Olympic weightlifting. Two Olympic weightlifting events, the clean and jerk and snatch, were targeted for intervention. Video modeling and video feedback were effective in improving both lifts for all three participants. The social validity measure indicated that the intervention was highly acceptable for both participants and trainers. (PsycInfo Database Record (c) 2021 APA, all rights reserved)

  • Reducing rapid eating in adults with Down syndrome: Using token
reinforcement to increase interresponse time between bites.

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Individuals with developmental disabilities are more likely to eat rapidly. Rapid eating is correlated with choking, vomiting, aspiration, overeating, and obesity, all of which negatively affect quality of life. Behavioral strategies have been used to slow eating pace but often require invasive techniques, such as response blocking, to achieve clinically important reductions. The current study extended previous research by implementing a treatment package that included the use of a timer, differential reinforcement of low rates of behavior, and token reinforcement system to reduce rapid eating exhibited by three adults with Down syndrome residing in an independent supported living facility. The results demonstrated that this treatment package increased the interresponse time between bites to criteria for all three participants. • Physical activity in children: An evaluation of an individualized heart
           rate assessment.

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: The Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC, 2019) recommends that children engage in 60 min of moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA) daily. Heart rate (HR) is a valid, precise, and sensitive measure of physical activity; however, most recommendations for target HR levels are rarely individualized (Eckard et al., 2019). The purpose of this study was to determine individualized HR zones indicative of light, moderate, and vigorous intensity. Ten children engaged in four activity types (sitting/standing, walking slowly, walking briskly, and running) while HR was measured each second. Results indicated that engaging in these activities produced consistently differentiated HRs within participants. Average HRs for each activity differed across participants, indicating individual differences in HR values. Preliminary results provide support for an individualized HR assessment to determine HR zones in assessments and interventions targeting MVPA. • Practice and ethical considerations for behavior analysts in health,
           sport, and fitness.

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Behavior analytic technologies are well-suited to address behaviors related to health, sport, and fitness (HSF). As demand grows and the number of behavior analysts who desire to work in HSF increases, questions related to certification, scope of practice, scope of competence, and unique ethical situations must be considered. The purpose of this article is threefold. First, we provide considerations related to obtaining Board Certified Behavior Analyst/Board Certified Behavior Analyst—Doctoral (BCBA/BCBA-D) certification for those interested in working in health, sport, and fitness. Second, we provide a brief overview of scope of practice and scope of competence and provide specific examples for increasing scope of competence to practice in the areas of HSF. Third, we present potential ethical situations and corresponding questions that HSF practitioners may encounter, along with potential steps one can take to address these questions. Our hope is that this article will engender further discussion among those in our field. (PsycInfo Database Record (c) 2021 APA, all rights reserved)
