  • Mathematical Flexibility: Theoretical, Methodological, and Educational
           Considerations

    • Authors: Marian Hickendorff, Jake McMullen, Lieven Verschaffel
      Pages: 326 - 334
Abstract: The current paper presents an introduction to a special issue focusing on mathematical flexibility, which is an important aspect of mathematical thinking and a cherished, but capricious, outcome of mathematics education. Mathematical flexibility involves the flexible, creative, meaningful, and innovative use of mathematical concepts, relations, representations, and strategies. In this introduction we discuss the most relevant theoretical, methodological, and educational considerations related to mathematical flexibility, which form the background of the empirical studies presented in the special issue. Collectively, these studies provide a broader understanding of the mathematical flexibility, its subcomponents, influences, and malleability.

  • The Role of Domain-General and Domain-Specific Skills in the
           Identification of Arithmetic Strategies

    • Authors: Joanne Eaves, Nina Attridge, Camilla Gilmore
      Pages: 335 - 350
Abstract: Individuals solve arithmetic problems in different ways and the strategies they choose are indicators of advanced competencies such as adaptivity and flexibility, and predict mathematical achievement. Understanding the factors that encourage or hinder the selection of different strategies is therefore important for helping individuals to succeed in mathematics. Our research contributed to this goal by investigating the skills required for selecting the associativity shortcut-strategy, where problems such as ‘16 + 38 – 35’ are solved by performing the subtraction (38 – 35 = 3) before the addition (3 + 16 = 19). In a well-powered, pre-registered study, adults completed two tasks that involved ‘a + b – c’ problems, and we recorded a) whether and b) when, they identified the shortcut. They also completed tasks that measured domain-specific skills (calculation skill and understanding of the order of operations) and domain-general skills (working memory, inhibition and switching). Of all the measures, inhibition was the most reliable predictor of whether individuals identified the shortcut, and we discuss the roles it may play in selecting efficient arithmetic strategies.

  • Adults’ Use of Subtraction by Addition and its Association With
           Executive Functions

    • Authors: Stijn Van Der Auwera, Bert De Smedt, Joke Torbeyns, Lieven Verschaffel
      Pages: 351 - 366
Abstract: This study examined adults’ frequent, efficient and adaptive use of direct subtraction (DS) and subtraction by addition (SBA) in mental multi-digit subtraction with the choice/no-choice method. Participants were offered subtractions in one choice condition (choice between DS and SBA) and two no-choice conditions (mandatory use of either DS or SBA). SBA was used as frequently as DS in the choice condition. DS was most accurate on subtractions with a large difference (e.g., 502 – 18), while SBA was fastest on subtractions with a small difference (e.g., 903 – 886). In general, participants were adaptive for task characteristics and their personal speed characteristics. We further analyzed task-based adaptivity on an individual level via a Latent Class Analysis. Results showed that two-thirds of the participants were adaptive to task characteristics, and that these adaptive participants were the most proficient in accuracy and speed in the choice condition. We further examined whether executive functions (updating, inhibition, shifting) were related to individual differences in strategy efficiency and task-based adaptivity. In line with our hypothesis, updating was related to strategy efficiency, such that participants with higher updating skills were more accurate. In contrast to our expectations, inhibition and shifting were not related to task-based strategy adaptivity. This study highlights adults’ efficient and adaptive use of arithmetic strategies, and its association with their proficiency and executive functions.

  • Flexibility and Adaptivity in Arithmetic Strategy Use: What Children Know
           and What They Show

    • Authors: Marian Hickendorff
      Pages: 367 - 381
Abstract: Central elements of adaptive expertise in arithmetic problem solving are flexibility, using multiple strategies, and adaptivity, selecting the optimal strategy. Research shows that the strategies children actually use do not fully reflect the strategies they know: there is hidden potential. In the current study a sample of 147 third graders from the Netherlands completed a comprehensive assessment of adaptive expertise in the domain of multidigit subtraction, designed to measure, first, the strategies students know and use to solve subtraction problems (potential and practical flexibility). Second, it measured to what extent students know which strategy is optimal and to what extent they use the optimal strategy (potential and practical adaptivity). Findings for flexibility showed that most students consistently used the same strategy across all problems: practical flexibility was low. When prompted, students knew more strategies than they used spontaneously, suggesting hidden potential in flexibility. Findings for adaptivity showed that students hardly ever spontaneously used the task-specific strategy that is efficient for specific problems since it has the fewest and easiest steps. However, almost half of the students could select this strategy from a set of given strategies at least once. Furthermore, an innovative, personalized version of the choice/no-choice method showed that the task-specific strategy was usually not the optimal strategy (fastest strategy leading to a correct answer) for individual students. Finally, students used the strategy with which they performed best more often than the other strategies, but there is hidden potential for the adaptive use of task-specific strategies.

  • A Complicated Relationship: Examining the Relationship Between Flexible
           Strategy Use and Accuracy

    • Authors: Jeannette Garcia Coppersmith, Jon R. Star
      Pages: 382 - 397
Abstract: This study explores student flexibility in mathematics by examining the relationship between accuracy and strategy use for solving arithmetic and algebra problems. Core to procedural flexibility is the ability to select and accurately execute the most appropriate strategy for a given problem. Yet the relationship between strategy selection and accurate execution is nuanced and poorly understood. In this paper, this relationship was examined in the context of an assessment where students were asked to complete the same problem twice using different approaches. In particular, we explored (a) the extent to which students were more accurate when selecting standard or better-than-standard strategies, (b) whether this accuracy-strategy use relationship differed depending on whether the student solved a problem for the first time or the second time, and (c) the extent to which students were more accurate when solving algebraic versus arithmetic problems. Our results indicate significant associations between accuracy and all of these aspects— we found differences in accuracy based on strategy, problem type, and a significant interaction effect between strategy and assessment part. These findings have important implications both for researchers investigating procedural flexibility as well as secondary mathematics educators who seek to promote this capacity among their students.

  • Comparing Fraction Magnitudes: Adults’ Verbal Reports Reveal Strategy
Flexibility and Adaptivity, but Also Bias

    • Authors: Andreas Obersteiner, Martha Wagner Alibali, Vijay Marupudi
      Pages: 398 - 413
Abstract: Many studies have used fraction magnitude comparison tasks to assess people’s abilities to quickly assess fraction magnitudes. However, since there are multiple ways to compare fractions, it is not clear whether people actually reason about the holistic magnitudes of the fractions in this task and whether they use multiple strategies in a flexible and adaptive way. We asked 72 adults to solve challenging fraction comparisons (e.g., 31/71 vs. 13/23) on a computer. In some of these comparisons, using benchmarks (i.e., reference numbers such as 1/2) was potentially beneficial. After each trial, participants provided verbal reports of their strategies. We found that participants used a large variety of strategies. The majority of strategies were holistic and relied on fraction magnitudes, and most of these strategies were based on benchmarks. Participants sometimes used gap comparison (i.e., comparing the differences between each fraction’s numerator and denominator), a heuristic that is not always valid and that does not rely on fraction magnitudes. Participants used strategies flexibly: they used many different strategies, they used highly efficient strategies most often, and they adapted their strategy use to features of the items. However, participants sometimes used gap comparison on items for which it did not yield the correct response, and this lack of adaptivity partly explained the “natural number bias” observed in this study.

  • Characterizing Mathematics Anxiety and Its Relation to Performance in
           Routine and Adaptive Tasks

    • Authors: Hilma Halme, Kelly Trezise, Minna M. Hannula-Sormunen, Jake McMullen
      Pages: 414 - 429
Abstract: Mathematics anxiety hinders students' mathematical achievement already in primary school, but research on its effects beyond whole number knowledge is limited. The main aim of the current study is to examine how state and trait mathematics anxiety relate to performance across five tasks that are relevant for the development of mathematics in primary school, including a measure of adaptive expertise with school mathematics. These include mathematical tasks with non-symbolic quantities, whole numbers, and rational numbers. The participants were 406 primary school students attending the 5th grade (N = 188) and 6th grade (N = 218). Our results showed that state anxiety varies across task type. Furthermore, students' self-evaluated state and trait mathematics anxiety had varying negative relations with performance depending on the task type. In particular, we found that mathematics anxiety may limit students' adaptive expertise with rational numbers, even after controlling for other relevant mathematical skills. Overall, our results indicate that existing accounts on the role mathematics anxiety plays in school mathematics should expand to consider differences across task type and measures of anxiety.

  • The Power of One: The Importance of Flexible Understanding of an Identity
           Element

    • Authors: Lauren K. Schiller, Ao Fan, Robert S. Siegler
      Pages: 430 - 442
Abstract: The number one plays a special role in mathematics because it is the identity element in multiplication and division. The present findings, however, indicate that many middle school students do not demonstrate mathematical flexibility representing one as a fraction. Despite possessing explicit knowledge of fraction forms of one (e.g., 95% of students indicated that 36/36 = 1), most students did not recognize and apply knowledge of fraction forms of one to estimate numerical magnitudes, solve arithmetic problems, and evaluate arithmetic operations. Specifically, students were less accurate in locating fraction forms of one on number lines than integer forms of the same number; they also were slower and less accurate on fraction arithmetic problems that included one as a fraction (e.g., 6/6 + 1/3) than one as an integer (e.g., 1 + 1/3); and they were less accurate evaluating statements involving fraction forms of one than the integer one (e.g., lower accuracy on true or false statements such as 5/6 × 2/2 = 5/6 than 4/9 × 1 = 4/9). Analyses of three widely used textbook series revealed almost no text linking fractions in the form n/n to the integer one. Greater emphasis on flexible understanding of fractions equivalent to one in textbooks and instruction might promote greater understanding of rational number mathematics more generally.

  • Enhancing Cognitive Flexibility Through a Training Based on Multiple
Categorization: Developing Proportional Reasoning in Primary School

    • Authors: Calliste Scheibling-Sève, Katarina Gvozdic, Elena Pasquinelli, Emmanuel Sander
      Pages: 443 - 472
Abstract: Proportional reasoning is a key topic both at school and in everyday life. However, students are often misled by their preconceptions regarding proportions. Our hypothesis is that these limitations can be mitigated by working on alternative ways of categorizing situations that enable more adequate inferences. Multiple categorization triggers flexibility, which enables reinterpreting a problem statement and adopting a more relevant point of view. The present study aims to show the improvements in proportional reasoning after an intervention focusing on such a multiple categorization. Twenty-eight 4th and 5th grade classes participated in the study during one school year. Schools were classified by the SES of their neighborhood. The experimental group received 12 math lessons focusing on flexibly envisioning a situation involving proportional reasoning from different points of view. At the end of the school year, compared to a control group, the experimental group had better results on the posttest when solving proportion word problems and proposed more diverse solving strategies. The analyses also show that the performance gap linked to the school’s SES classification was reduced. This offers promising perspectives regarding multiple categorization as a path to overtake preconceptions and develop cognitive flexibility at school.
