  • Interview with Alan Bass

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: This interview was conducted in 2007 following the publication of Bass's book Interpretation and Difference: The Strangeness of Care (Stanford University Press, 2006). It originally appeared on the website of the Confederation of Independent Psychoanalytic Societies (CIPS).Your new book, Interpretation and Difference, fleshes out with greater complexity the philosophical stakes of your previous book, Difference and Disavowal, to which it appears as a companion. It's recognizably more theoretical than clinical, more philosophical than psychoanalytic. But my impression is that one of your major concerns is the breakdown of these sorts of oppositions, to show how philosophy and psychoanalysis fit together. It would ... Read More

  • Plus d'une loi: Reading Repetition Compulsion and Generalized Fetishism
           with Deleuze-Guattari and Derrida

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Read More

  • Derrida after Shakespeare: A Lacanian Reading

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: What is the place of the flesh in the literary text, not as theme or topos but as zooic substance that pulsates in and as molecular matter, beyond the course of an individual life' Such is a question pertinent in different ways to the concerns of deconstruction and Lacanian psychoanalysis. In what follows, I return to the Derridean treatments of Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet, Hamlet, and The Merchant of Venice, the latter two also the object of commentary by Lacan, focusing on their rhetorical modes of organizing jouissance, what I call their psycho-rhetoric. It is the articulation of this rhetorical mode of organizing jouissance, the way in which the Shakespearean text turns word-thing-object, I propose, that is ... Read More
