  • The Development of a Calculator for Objectively Evaluating Supervisory
           Behaviors in Practice

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Abstract Supervision has been a popular topic of study by behavior analysts for the last decade. This popularity came about after several hallmark articles were published and key events in our profession enhanced clarity regarding how much impact supervision can have on important variables such as the quality of behavior-analytic service delivery, patient outcomes, staff satisfaction, and level of staff burnout. Despite the increase in the volume of supervision literature, few articles have provided concrete recommendations for how to objectively evaluate supervisory behaviors in practice. In this tutorial, we share how we developed a supervision assessment calculator and tested its efficacy to evaluate supervisory behaviors in our practice. We tested the calculator with mock videos, and compared scores from independent raters to determine if the calculator could be used reliability in practice. We make recommendations for behavior analysts who wish to create objective scoring criteria for supervision in their own practice, and ways in which resources like this can be used to enhance the quality of supervision.

  • Effects of an Activity Schedule Intervention Package on Cooperative Vocal
           Exchanges During Learning Centers

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Abstract Children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) may have difficulty engaging in cooperative communication during classroom learning center activities with peers. This study examined the effects of using an activity schedule intervention package on the rate of contextually appropriate cooperative exchanges for children with ASD during classroom learning centers. In this study, children with ASD worked together in participant partnerships to complete learning center activities. A nonconcurrent multiple baseline across participant partnerships with embedded reversal components was used to examine the effects of the activity schedule intervention package. All participant partnerships demonstrated increased cooperative vocal exchanges and engaged in some untrained exchanges. Implications and suggestions for future research are discussed. • Activity schedules can be embedded into learning center activities to promote cooperative communication. • All participant partnerships engaged in both trained and untrained exchanges. • One participant partnership continued to engage in cooperative communication when we removed the activity schedules. • We were able to fade many of the components of the activity schedules for two participant partnerships.

  • The Challenges Ahead: Concepts, Analytics, and Ethics of Value-Based Care
           in Applied Behavior Analysis

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Abstract Value-based care has incrementally increased its footprint across healthcare over the past 2 decades. Several organizations in ABA have begun experimenting with various components of value-based care specific to the delivery of ABA services and it seems likely that this trend will continue into the future. For those new to value-based care, this article reviews the main conceptual components as well as common myths and misconceptions about value-based care. Though conceptually straightforward, practically pulling off value-based care in ABA will require significant advancements in data collection, analytics, sharing, and transparency that follow from broad field-wide collaboration. Further, many ethical questions will likely arise as ABA providers begin thinking about and assessing their clinical and business operations through a value-based care lens. Though value-based care will likely roll out slowly and incrementally over many years, ABA providers interested in participating or leading these conversations will likely benefit from focusing collaborative efforts around: normalizing data sharing and self-analysis; defining and developing quality and cost measures; identifying patient risk variables; addressing challenges at the intersection of public health ethics and clinical ethics; and addressing challenges at the intersection of AI ethics and clinical ethics. Most probably agree that optimizing patient outcomes is the goal of ABA services. However, doing it in an objective, measurable, and consistent manner that can be validated by third-parties will require overcoming significant challenges.

  • Training Behavior Analysis Graduate Students to Work with an Interpreter

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Abstract There has been a substantial increase in the racial and ethnic diversity of the United States population in the past 10–12 years, with the second most prevalent racial or ethnic group being Hispanic or Latino (Jensen, 2021). As a result, it is crucial that behavior analysts are prepared to serve consumers from all backgrounds, including those who do not speak English fluently. One important component for service delivery for linguistically diverse consumers is the incorporation of an interpreter. Given that few peer-reviewed articles in behavior analysis have been published regarding working with interpreters, the current study evaluated the effectiveness of Behavioral Skills Training (Fleming et al., 1996 Journal of Organizational Behavior Management, 16(1), 3–25) to teach behavior analysis graduate students to work with an interpreter during behavior analytic service provision with Spanish-speaking families. The results of this study show that practitioners can be trained to work with an interpreter in a relatively short amount of time. However, training with an interpreter did not affect caregiver comprehension. The results of the satisfaction surveys suggest that the interpreters noted significant improvements in the practitioners’ responding following training, whereas the caregivers did not. The participants also completed satisfaction surveys following the study and indicated positive experiences with the training.

  • A Primer on Private Equity Ownership in ABA

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Abstract The applied behavior analysis (ABA) service industry is currently estimated to be worth at least $4 billion. As a result of potential profits that can be made from ABA services, for-profit organizations have become more common in the field. One type of for-profit organization that has become especially prominent in the ABA service industry is private equity (PE)-owned ABA companies. As PE ownership has become more common in ABA and other human service industries, concerns about PE ownership have grown across disciplines. The current article focuses specifically on PE’s involvement in ABA services. The definition of PE and its fundamental components are discussed, along with their potential benefits and risks. The potential impacts of PE and opportunities for future research are also discussed.

  • Perceptions of Machine Learning among Therapists Practicing Applied
           Behavior Analysis: A National Survey

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Abstract Collecting data and logging behaviors of clients who have autism spectrum disorder (ASD) during applied behavior analysis (ABA) therapy sessions can be challenging in real time, especially when the behaviors require a rapid response, like self-injury or aggression. Little information is available about the automation of data collection in ABA therapy, such as through machine learning (ML). Our survey of ABA therapists nationally revealed mixed levels of familiarity with ML and generally neutral responses to statements endorsing the benefits of ML. Higher certification levels and more years of experience with ABA were associated with decreased confidence in ML’s ability to accurately identify behaviors during ABA sessions whereas previous familiarity with ML was associated with confidence in ML, comfort with using ML, and trust that ML technology can keep client data secure. Understanding the perceptions of ABA therapists can guide future endeavors to incorporate ML for automated behavior logging into ABA practice. Applied behavior analysis (ABA) therapists perceive some value in utilizing machine learning (ML) in data collection during ABA sessions, but the majority of therapists are not familiar with the concept of ML. In our survey, ABA therapists with greater familiarity with ML were more likely to be comfortable using ML in their practice. Surveyed ABA therapists with higher certification levels and more experience with ABA were less likely to be confident in ML’s ability to identify behaviors accurately. Awareness of ABA therapists’ perspectives about ML, especially regarding privacy and security, and partnership with computer scientists can further the development of ML technology to augment data collection during ABA therapy. Educating ABA therapists about the potential of ML, especially the potential to reduce the burden of behavior logging while simultaneously intervening for aggressive and self-injurious behaviors, will be necessary for successful implementation of ML in ABA therapy settings.

  • Building Collaborative Partnerships between Behavior Analysts and Families

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Abstract Collaboration practices have been utilized within applied behavior analysis (ABA) to build relationships among relevant stakeholders. A recent focus within the field of ABA highlights collaborative practices for behavior analysts to utilize in service delivery positions. However, myriad barriers, such as sources of funding and competing stakeholder interests, inhibit behavior analysts’ ability to build collaborative partnerships with families. We describe the barriers behavior analysts face at the systemic, implementation, and training levels of service delivery and their potential impact on behavior analysts and the families with whom they work. We then highlight four fundamental tenets of building a collaborative partnership between behavior analysts and families, which incorporate collaborative strategies utilized in positive behavior support (PBS), family-centered practice (FCP), and ABA. We then offer practical recommendations to be used within the context of the current barriers that behavior analysts and families experience. These recommendations are precisely indicated to establish practices providing technically sound ABA services while continuing to deepen collaborative partnerships with families.

Language for Latino Caregivers of Autistic Children: A Telehealth-Based
           Evaluation

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Abstract Culturally and linguistically diverse (CLD) families of autistic children face unique challenges in accessing services that are appropriate for their cultures and languages. The purpose of the current study was to evaluate the impact of training language on caregiver skill acquisition. Using behavioral skills training (BST) through telehealth, three Latino caregivers whose first language is Spanish were taught to implement two different behavioral protocols with their autistic children. For one protocol, BST was done in Spanish; for the other, BST was done in English. Overall, the training in each family’s first language was (1) more efficient at promoting the skill acquisition of both caregivers and children; (2) rated by caregivers as more socially valid, and (3) associated with higher levels of caregivers’ indices of personalismo, involvement, and happiness. Findings suggest that cultural adaptations may be necessary to provide more effective and enjoyable training for CLD families.

  • Unrestricted Learning Opportunities for Trainees in Behavior Analysis: A
           Survey of Current Practices

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Abstract Individuals seeking certification as a board certified behavior analyst (BCBA) by the Behavior Analyst Certification Board (BACB) must meet certain eligibility requirements. In addition to passing the BCBA examination, such requirements include completion of a master’s degree, behavior-analytic coursework, and supervised practical fieldwork. In accruing fieldwork hours, trainees must be provided with the opportunity to complete unrestricted activities. The BACB defines unrestricted activities as “. . . those that are most likely to be performed by a BCBA,” and requires that 60% of fieldwork hours are comprised of these activities (BACB, 2022b). Fieldwork hours may be accrued across a number of different host sites (e.g., hospital units, schools, community locations), with each host site having different day-to-day responsibilities affecting how these opportunities are provided. Therefore, exploration of the provision of these opportunities and the barriers to providing these opportunities is warranted. The current study sought to determine the current practices involved in provision of opportunities to gain fieldwork experience hours towards BCBA certification; in particular, practices related to unrestricted fieldwork activities. Results indicate that, although unrestricted learning opportunities are often provided to trainees, contingencies present within the day-to-day operations of a clinical environment can be hampering. A discussion of the implications of these barriers and potential solutions are included.

  • Strategies for Incorporating Compassionate Care in a Behavior Analysis
           Graduate Program

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Abstract Recent conversations in behavior analysis have increasingly centered around improving compassionate care and cultural responsiveness practices in the field. Behavior analytic graduate programs are uniquely positioned to bring these conversations to the forefront for future generations of behavior analysts. If graduate students are offered education and training in cultural responsiveness and compassionate soft skills, they may be better positioned to serve their future clients. Faculty can prepare to teach and mentor students in this way by first engaging in self-assessment and reflection on these issues, and then by incorporating them into the graduate curriculum through knowledge and skill-building (e.g., readings, role plays, case scenarios). Faculty can also model compassion through thoughtful course design and interactions with students. Areas for future research are also discussed.

  • Science over Cynicism: The Race to Preserve Best-Practice Applied Behavior
Analysis through Expanded Awareness, Advocacy, and Enforcement of the
Mental Health Parity and Addiction Equity Act

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Abstract Widespread insurance funding of applied behavior analysis (ABA) as a medically necessary mental health benefit in the treatment of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) has placed behavior analysts in the role of health-care providers, and the race is on to see whether best-practice ABA will be defined by the insurance industry or behavior analysts. Behavior analysts who work with insurance and/or Medicaid have increasingly encountered payor guidelines that interfere with their efforts to implement treatment plans that reflect generally accepted standards of care. When these arbitrary limits are integrated into ABA practices, payors—not science—are shaping how ABA is implemented. Many common payor guidelines, such as location exclusions, caregiver participation requirements, and age and hour limits, violate the federal Mental Health Parity and Addiction Equity Act (MHPAEA). For the first time since MHPAEA became law, federal agencies are scrutinizing payor guidelines and practices through the lens of MHPAEA and working to increase compliance. In this new climate of MHPAEA enforcement, behavior analysts are uniquely positioned to identify, reject, and report improper guidelines that constrain their ABA practices and promote best practices to optimize patient outcomes. This review of MHPAEA in the context of ABA highlights common violations and current advocacy and aims to equip behavior analysts with the tools to free their practices from improper limits.

  • Making Deception Fun: Teaching Autistic Individuals How to Play Friendly
           Tricks

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Abstract Perspective taking is a critical repertoire for navigating social relationships and consists of a variety of complex verbal skills, including socially adaptive forms of deception. Detecting and being able to use socially adaptive deception likely has many practical uses, including defending oneself against bullying, telling white lies to avoid hurting others’ feelings, keeping secrets and bluffing during games, and playing friendly tricks on others. Previous research has documented that some Autistic1 children have challenges identifying deception and playfully deceiving others (Reinecke et al., 1997). The current study employed a multiple baseline across participants design to evaluate the use of multiple exemplar training, rules, modeling, practice, and feedback for teaching four Autistic children and adolescents to use deception to play friendly tricks on others. The procedure was successful for all participants, and generalization was achieved across novel, untrained tricks.

  • Behavior Analysis at a Macro Level: The Case for Behavior Analysts in
           Public Policy Work

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Abstract Despite some early starts, such as Seekins and Fawcett’s, The Behavior Analyst, 9, 35–45, (1986) description of the stages of public policy making and the ABAI task force on public policy headed by Fawcett et al, The Behavior Analyst, 11, 11–25, (1988), little progress has been made to bring the field of behavior analysis up to the standards of other professions (e.g., pediatrics) in the area of advocacy. In this article we will use experiences in advocating for the profession of behavior analysis in the state of New York to encourage behavior analysts to become involved in advocacy in their state (locally, regionally, state-wide). Further, we suggest that the experiences and observations of professionals who are experts at advocating on a national level (e.g., pediatricians) may be important in encouraging behavior analysts to establish a national advocacy platform. In addition, this article will attempt to make the case as to why it is critical that behavior analysts seek and adopt leadership positions municipally, at the state level, nationally, and even internationally, in the area of advocacy. Finally, we will suggest that there is a need to integrate advocacy into the training and daily activity of behavior analysts and why the field might now be ready for this shift, as we stand on the shoulders of giants.

Abstract: Abstract Naturalistic observation of verbal behavior on social media is a method of gathering data on the acceptability of topics of social interest. In other words, online social opinion may be a modern-day measure of social validity. We sought to gain an objective understanding of online discourse related to the field of applied behavior analysis (ABA). We analyzed Twitter posts related to ABA (e.g., #ABA, #BehaviorAnalysis, #appliedbehavioranalysis). Our initial sample consisted of 119,911 tweets from 2012 to 2022. We selected a random subset (n = 11,000) for further analysis using a stratified sampling procedure to ensure that tweets across years were adequately represented. Two observers were trained to code tweets for relevance and sentiment toward the field. A total of 5,408 relevant tweets were identified and analyzed, with an arithmetic mean of 492 tweets per year. Tweets were categorized as having neutral (51.41%), positive (43.81%), or negative (4.79%) sentiment. Negative sentiment tweets received approximately three times higher engagement scores compared to positive and neutral tweets. Positive sentiment tweets commonly used hashtags related to special education, therapy, behavior analysis, autism, and specific individuals. Negative sentiment tweets focused on the harmful effects of ABA, disability, variations of ABA, and promoting alternatives to ABA. Our results suggest that there is a small but vocal minority that has the potential to shape the narrative on ABA. We suggest a path forward for behavior analysts in the study of the online discourse on ABA.

  • Comparison of Acquisition Criteria Applied to Individual and Sets of
           Tacts: A Systematic Replication

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Abstract The experimenters examined two different levels of acquisition criteria—Set and Operant Analysis—to assess acquisition and response maintenance of tact operants for four participants. Set Analysis involved replacing acquired operants at a set level, whereas Operant Analysis involved replacing acquired operants at an individual operant level. All participants required fewer instructional trials to acquire tacts under the Operant Analysis condition. Three participants maintained a similar number of operants in both conditions, whereas one participant maintained more operants under the Set Analysis condition.

  • Neurodiversity-Affirming Applied Behavior Analysis

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Abstract Individuals within the Autistic and Neurodivergent communities have shared numerous concerns about applied behavior analysis (ABA). These criticisms often relate to the ableism reflected within current practices, which have impeded the dignity and autonomy of many individuals with disabilities served through ABA. Both within the field and outside of the field, there is a growing acknowledgment of the need to listen, reflect, and reconsider approaches to service delivery, which can ultimately benefit service recipients well beyond the Autistic or Neurodivergent communities. ABA is committed to being responsive to consumers, even when the social validity data are unfavorable, and the path forward is unclear. This article will provide an overview of historical and current perspectives regarding disability rights, the Autistic and Neurodiversity advocacy movements, and disability as a form of diversity. Calls to action will be presented with accompanying neurodiversity-affirming actions for behavior analytic practitioners. These calls to action are informed by feedback from the Autistic and Neurodivergent communities as well as other interested parties and are related to (1) client identity and language; (2) dignity, self-determination, choice, and assent; and (3) social validity, which may be acted on through compassionate and affirming approaches.

  • Organizational Behavior Management Approaches to Advancing Compassionate
           Care in Research and Practice

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Abstract Compassion in health care has been associated with improved patient outcomes, better treatment adherence, patient engagement, and satisfaction. However, much of this literature is limited by weak design and measurement strategies. Despite researchers’ efforts to demystify compassion and produce an evidence-based understanding of it, empirical models and definitions remain a work in progress. In this article, we discuss how contemporary methodological features of organizational behavior management (OBM) could be used to advance our understanding of compassionate care and its impact on important outcomes for patients, clinicians, and organizations alike. Recommendations for measuring, assessing, and intervening at both the individual and systems-level to promote compassionate care are provided. Though the origin, development, and maintenance of compassion may be complex, it is clear that behavior analysts have an ethical obligation to invoke compassion in their service to others. Likewise, those at the executive level of decision making in organizations have an obligation to purposefully design environments that support behavior analysts’ engagement in compassionate care. Viewing compassionate care through a systems lens may help to align the values and goals of patients, clinicians, and organizations by treating compassion like a critical business metric.

  • Behavior Analysis Services on the Island of Curaçao: Increasing
Dissemination, Capacity Building, and Access to Care

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Abstract Although applied behavior analysis (ABA) is a well-supported evidence-based practice in the United States, other countries have a lack of national practice standards, training programs, and public policy that has made it challenging for practitioners to provide services to individuals diagnosed with autism spectrum disorders and other developmental disabilities. In addition to these barriers, smaller countries, like the island of Curaçao, must also contend with their small size and limited resources. Nonetheless, over the past 6 years a small multidisciplinary team has established an ABA therapy center, identified some funding sources for families who may not have the resources to afford these private pay services, and created a training program for local people interested in a career in behavior analysis. The steps taken, barriers encountered, and successes achieved, provide a guide for others attempting to make an impact when resources are limited. With these achievements, Curaçao joins a small group of other islands that are paving the way for the establishment and regulation of behavior analysis in the Caribbean.

  • Avoiding Abuse of Power: A Case for Compassionate, Participant-Centered
           Research

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Abstract Although applied behavior analysis (ABA) is a science committed to improving the lives of others in socially meaningful ways, it exists within complex structures of power that are at odds with the values of our science. Current research practices perpetuate the oppression of people with disabilities. For too long ABA researchers have disproportionately conducted research with people with disabilities without their input. It is time for a paradigmatic change toward more compassionate and participant-centered research practices. In this article, we (1) highlight the concerns with current research practices and how ABA may perpetuate ableism; (2) provide suggestions for more compassionate, participant-centered research using two applied research studies to illustrate compassionate research in action; and (3) point to systems-level changes that we believe will disrupt oppressive and ableist research practices.
